A Catholic to Know Andrew and his brother, Simon Peter, were fishermen when Jesus promised to make them “fishers of men.” Andrew was originally a follower of John the Baptist but, at Jesus’ baptism, he recognized the truth of John’s proclamation—that Jesus was truly the Lamb of God. Following the Ascension of our Lord, Andrew traveled to Greece, where he preached the Good News of Jesus’ Resurrection. Around the year a.d. 70, Andrew was crucified and tied to an X-shaped cross for two days, proclaiming Christ to the crowds as he died. The X-shaped cross remains Saint Andrew’s symbol, along with fish and a fisherman’s net.

Witness and Share These sentences describe what Catholics believe. Listen carefully as they are read. Ask yourself, “How strong are my Catholic beliefs?”

My Way to Faith • I answer the call to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ. • I honor Mary by praying Marian prayers such as the Hail Mary and the Rosary. • I look to the pope, the Church, and its leaders to help me deepen my relationship with Jesus. • I follow Jesus, even though some friends do not believe. • I share my experiences of faith in Jesus with my friends and family.

Share Your Faith Do you know a friend or family member who does not go to church very often? Think of one way you might invite that person back to Jesus. Write your ideas on the lines and then invite that person to attend Mass with you.
