Preface In 1999 an Irish Jesuit named Alan McGuckian had the simple—but at the time radical—idea of bringing daily prayer to the Internet. No one imagined that his experimental project would grow into a global community with volunteers translating the prayer experience into seventeen different languages.

Millions of people, from numerous Christian traditions, visit www.sacredspace.ie each year, and what they find is an invitation to step away from their busy routine for a few minutes each day to concentrate on what is really important in their lives. Sacred Space offers its visitors the opportunity to grow in prayerful awareness of their friendship with God. Besides the daily prayer experience, Sacred Space also offers Living Space, with commentaries on the Scripture readings for each day’s Catholic Mass. The Chapel of Intentions allows people to add their own prayers, while Pray with the Pope joins the community to the international Apostleship of Prayer. In addition, Sacred Space provides Lenten and Advent retreats, often in partnership with Pray as You Go, an audio prayer service from the British Jesuits.

The contents of this printed edition, first produced in 2004, are taken directly from our Internet site. Despite the increased use of Sacred Space on mobile devices, many people want a book they can hold and carry, and this book has proven especially helpful for prayer groups.

In 2014 the Irish Jesuits entered into an apostolic agreement with the Chicago-Detroit Jesuits, and Sacred Space now operates in partnership with Loyola Press.

Introduction to Sacred Space, 2018 Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, is famously known for wanting to find God in all things. Is that even possible? you might ask. He believed it was, but only as a gift from God and only as the fruit of our paying attention to our experience. Ignatius developed an optimistic spiritual practice that assumed the presence of God at every moment of our existence. While we tend to think of God’s presence as a “sometimes thing,” Ignatius came to believe that our perception of God’s presence as a sometimes occurrence is a major spiritual hindrance. Ignatius believed that God is always creating this universe, always keeping it in existence, always working to bring about God’s purpose in creation, and always trying to move us to join God in the great adventure of bringing about what Jesus called the kingdom of God. In order to experience this ever-present God, we need to develop a regular spiritual practice, a practice Ignatius had learned from his experience as a relatively untutored layman. Ignatius began to teach people and to write down the spiritual practices that helped him move toward uniting himself with God’s purposes and thus toward finding God in all things.

Spiritual Exercises is Ignatius’s manual for those who want to follow his example of helping others get in touch with our ever-present God. God wants a close personal relationship with each of us, and he wants each of us to join him in the great work of bringing about a world where peace and justice prevail. Over the almost five centuries since the time of Ignatius, Jesuits and many others have found through these spiritual practices the answer to their own deepest desires.

Over the centuries, the Spiritual Exercises have been adapted in many ways. Jesuits originally followed Ignatius’s own practice of giving the Exercises to individuals for thirty days. But they also used the methods of prayer suggested in the Exercises in their preaching, missions, and talks to larger groups. Eventually, houses were set aside for the giving of the Exercises to individuals and large groups. One of the adaptations suggested by Ignatius himself was to make the Exercises in daily life under the direction of someone trained in giving them. In this format, an individual maintained his or her regular daily life and work but promised to devote time every day to the spiritual practices suggested by Ignatius and to see the spiritual director viii

once a week. In the past fifty years, this adaptation has seen a worldwide resurgence and has touched many lives. It has also been used with groups to great advantage. In modern times, the giving of the Spiritual Exercises has become something of a cottage industry in many countries.

Enter the age of the Internet. Could this new tool be used to help large numbers of people move toward finding God in all things? The answer is a resounding yes! Many websites, in multiple languages, try to help people become more aware of God’s presence in their lives, using practices stemming from the Spiritual Exercises. One example is the book you have in your hands. In 1999 the Irish Jesuits started to offer daily prompts for prayer based on Ignatius’s Exercises on the website Sacred Space (www.sacredspace.ie).

The English edition was soon translated into other languages, and the site now features twenty-one languages that span the globe.

In my work as a spiritual director and in my travels, I have come across many, many people of various walks of life who use the daily prompts for prayer provided through Sacred Space. People find the site and the daily suggestions to be user-friendly, inviting, and—in keeping with Ignatian spirituality—optimistic. The suggestions help them pay attention to their experience, notice intimations of God’s presence in that experience, and engage in honest conversations with God. For each week, there is an overarching suggested theme and a method for spending time with God each day. One of the methods is to turn to the Scripture and reflections suggested for each day of the week. Each day’s text is taken from the Gospel reading for Mass that day. Thus, someone who follows Sacred Space every day will, in the course of a year, work prayerfully through all four of the Gospels. No wonder that so many have been enthralled by this site.

In spite of the digital age, many of us still like the feel of a book in our hands. The book Sacred Space, which you now hold in your hands, was designed for the likes of us. I am very happy to introduce the book and even happier that Loyola Press, a Jesuit institution, is now the publisher.

Ignatian spiritual practice has brought me closer to God, for which I am immensely grateful. Through Ignatius’s spiritual practices I have experienced God’s desire for my friendship, and I figure, if God wants my friendship, he wants everyone’s friendship. If you take this book seriously and engage in the relationship with God that it suggests, you will, I’m sure, find as much joy in God’s friendship as I have. Try it—you’ll like it.

The First Week of Advent

December 3—December 9, 2017 Something to think and pray about each day this week: Part of the Bigger Plan I’ve often thought about the angel coming to Mary. Our feasts and songs and icons celebrate the Annunciation, but I’d never thought about the moment when it was all over. I can only imagine it was something like what writer Annie Dillard experienced when she looked out on what she imagined was a field of angels. “I stood in pieces,” she writes, “afraid I was unable to move. Something had unhinged the world.” Later she describes the grave and stricken silence, the “unbearable green” and the “God-blasted, paralyzed” fields. People always comment on the bravery of Mary’s yes. I never quite understood this. Wouldn’t anyone say yes to an angel? But it seems unspeakably brave when I picture that later moment, when Mary stood before the God-blasted, paralyzed day and watched the angel depart.

The Presence of God “Be still and know that I am God.” Lord, your words lead us to the calmness and greatness of your presence.

Freedom I am free. When I look at these words in writing, they seem to create in me a feeling of awe. Yes, a wonderful feeling of freedom. Thank you, God. Consciousness At this moment, Lord, I turn my thoughts to you.

I will leave aside my chores and preoccupations.

I will take rest and refreshment in your presence, Lord.

The Word The word of God comes down to us through the Scriptures. May the Holy Spirit enlighten my mind and my heart to respond to the Gospel teachings. Conversation Begin to talk with Jesus about the Scripture you have just read. What part of it strikes a chord in you? Perhaps the words of a friend—or some story you have heard recently—will slowly rise to the surface of your consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the Scripture passage may be trying to say to you?

Conclusion Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen.

Sunday 3rd December First Sunday of Advent Mark 13:33–37 Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.

• Jesus is speaking of his second coming at the end of time. We must live so that it does not matter when he comes. Our life becomes a preparation for the vision of happiness.

• Do I anticipate the Lord’s coming, or do I dread it? Why do I feel as I do about this?

Monday 4th December Matthew 8:5–11 When [Jesus] entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.”

• This remarkable centurion is a model of prayer. This man’s faith in Jesus brought amazement and touched his heart. We too can touch the heart of Jesus when we pray with deep concern for someone in need.

• Who are the people in my life who need prayer? How might I bring their needs to Jesus?

Tuesday 5th December Luke 10:21–24 At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”

• This lovely prayer of Jesus tells us something of the relationship he treasured with his Father through the Holy Spirit. It is his prayer of thanksgiving for the successful mission of his disciples, whom he had sent out to preach. Jesus then tells them that they are indeed blessed to have accepted the good news and to be building their lives on their relationship with God. • Let us pray that, like the disciples, we have the “eyes to see and the ears to hear.”

Wednesday 6th December Matthew 15:29–37 After Jesus had left that place, he passed along the Sea of Galilee, and he went up the mountain, where he sat down. Great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the mute, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he cured them, so that the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.

Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” The disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in the desert to feed so great a crowd?” Jesus asked them, “How many loaves have you?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”

Then ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, he took the seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all of them ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.

• Lord, you are the one who notices when we are hungry, tired, or disorganized, and without making a fuss you reach out to our needs. The crowds wore you out, bringing you the maimed, the mute, and the blind. Again and again in the Gospels, you are the one who feeds the hungry and gives them strength for their journey. You are the bread of life.

• What resources do I have that, today, Jesus might use to help others?

Thursday 7th December Matthew 7:21, 24–27 [Jesus said to the people,] “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only one who does the will of my Father in heaven. . . . Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!”

• The Lord is the everlasting Rock, says the prophet Isaiah, so trust in the Lord forever. “For he has brought low the inhabitants of the height; the lofty city he lays low.” . . . But the faithful ones, on the other hand, can say, “he sets up victory like walls and bulwarks . . . we have a strong city” (Isaiah 26). Any moment now, he’s going to come and surround us with protection.

• It is the Lord who is “the rock of ages”—a still point, though the centuries swirl around. The Lord is a solid center on which we can build our life. If we are faithful to the Lord, the Lord is faithful to us.

Friday 8th December The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Luke 1:26–38 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

• Scripture leaves us in no doubt about God being a long-range planner; he can determine that a whole series of events come to maturity in his own good time. In fact, he has done this for the benefit of us all— planning, even before the beginning of the world, for us to become sisters and brothers of Jesus.

• For the grand plan to come to completion, the cooperation of Mary was needed. God still asks for our cooperation in the overall plan of his kingdom here on earth. Where do I fit in that plan today, or this week?

Saturday 9th December Matthew 9:35—10:1, 5a, 6–8 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’

Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.”

• The Twelve are to perform cures, to cast out devils—and even to raise the dead. (All in the day’s work, as it were.) Indeed, something totally new must be stirring!

• A shepherd-king has suddenly arrived: Jesus, full of compassion, is bringing heaven close to earth. I have the power, through the Holy Spirit, to express that compassion in my situations and relationships this very day.

The Second Week of Advent

December 10—December 16, 2017 Something to think and pray about each day this week: Signs of the Savior When I was in my early twenties, I backpacked around Scotland. At my northernmost destination, I stayed at a sheep farm. I remember waking up in the middle of the night, checking my watch, only four o’clock, and being shocked to see the sun outside my window blazing down on the fields. Since I’d expected darkness, the sun seemed unbearably bright.

Later, on the Isle of Skye, I watched the sun go down at ten at night and the sky gradually grow a darker blue but never turn black. I’m sure the natives barely noticed, but to me this perpetual daylight seemed like a sign. Though we sometimes turn away from brightness, preferring dark, the light is out there burning always, pouring through the universe at the greatest possible speed, forever coming, light upon light, dawning through the darkness.

The Presence of God “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Here I am, Lord. I come to seek your presence. I long for your healing power.

Freedom “In these days, God taught me as a schoolteacher teaches a pupil” (Saint Ignatius).

I remind myself that there are things God has to teach me yet, and I ask for the grace to hear those things and let them change me.

Consciousness Help me, Lord, to be more conscious of your presence. Teach me to recognize your presence in others.

Fill my heart with gratitude for the times your love has been shown to me through the care of others.

The Word God speaks to each of us individually. I listen attentively, to hear what he is saying to me. Read the text a few times, then listen. (Please turn to the Scripture on the following pages. Inspiration points are there should you need them. When you are ready, return here to continue.)

Conversation Conversation requires talking and listening.

As I talk to Jesus, may I also learn to be still and listen.

I picture the gentleness in his eyes and the smile full of love as he gazes on me.

I can be totally honest with Jesus as I tell him of my worries and my cares.

I will open my heart to him as I tell him of my fears and my doubts.

I will ask him to help me place myself fully in his care and to abandon myself to him, knowing that he always wants what is best for me.

Conclusion I thank God for these moments we have spent together and for any insights I have been given concerning the text.

Sunday 10th December Second Sunday of Advent Mark 1:1–8 The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written by the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

• Imagine yourself witnessing this scene, perhaps standing in the shallows with the water flowing around your ankles. Allow the scene to unfold. What is it like? The young man from Nazareth joins those waiting for John’s baptism: a symbol of purification but also of birth— coming up out of the waters of the womb into a new life as God’s beloved child.

• Lord, when I realize that you love me, it is like the start of a new life.

As I hear your voice, I know that I have a purpose and a destiny.

Monday 11th December Luke 5:17–26 One day, while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting nearby (they had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem); and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.

Just then some men came, carrying a paralyzed man on a bed. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; but finding no way to

bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus. When he saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, “Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the one who was paralyzed—“I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.” Immediately he stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went to his home, glorifying God. Amazement seized all of them, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”

• Jesus is the newly arrived kingdom, personified in his very self. Not only has he power to cure the paralyzed man, he also lays claim to forgive the man’s sins—and this requires nothing less than God’s own power.

• “We have seen strange things today,” say the onlookers. Nothing had prepared them for this. But this precisely is what our Advent season is about. We are commemorating the first coming of a Savior, and we are also preparing a welcome for this Savior in our own hearts and in the world of today.

Tuesday 12th December Luke 1:39–47 In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” • I marvel at the instincts and insight of mothers. While husband Zechariah is baffled and struck dumb and foster-father Joseph has misgivings, it is a woman, Elizabeth, herself pregnant, who recognizes the action of the Lord in her young cousin. She is given the special grace of an intimate appreciation of what is happening and who is really present.

• In daily life, do I always appreciate what is happening and who is really present?

Wednesday 13th December Matthew 11:28–30 [Jesus said,] “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

• The reign of the coming Savior king will not just bring security and welcome to anyone who feels lost and abandoned. Jesus’ kingdom also promises relief and support to those who simply feel that life has become too much for them.

• Jesus understands each of us better than we understand ourselves. His heart, gentle and humble, goes out to us. What burdens of mine does he offer to help me with today?

Thursday 14th December Matthew 11:11–15 Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John came; and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. Let anyone with ears listen!”

• What was it that placed John the Baptist below the least in the kingdom of heaven? He had preached the justice of God and the need for repentance; but he had not lived to see Jesus crucified and, in that, to see the unbelievable extent of God’s love for us.

• “If you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah . . .” Has God revealed anything to me lately that I felt unwilling to accept? When do we know that we are willing, or not willing, to receive God’s revelation?

Friday 15th December Matthew 11:16–19 [Jesus spoke to the crowds,] “But to what will I compare this generation?

It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon;’ the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

• The Lord has always wanted to shower his people with gifts. But often when the offer was made (through the mouth of his messengers, the prophets), the people turned their backs. In fact, even as Jesus prepared to begin his public ministry, this was still happening. The people refused the message of John the Baptist; it was no surprise that Jesus himself met opposition.

• Jesus has arrived offering the gift of new life in abundance, but we remain choosy about the way his message comes to us; it is “too churchy” on the one hand or “too worldly” on the other. May we pray during this season that our hearts become more open.

restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

• The Jewish faith looked forward to the ‘last days’ or end time when the Lord would come in glory and finally wrap up the affairs of this world.

And a conviction had arisen that the approach of the end time would be signaled by a forerunner; the figure of the larger-than-life prophet Elijah would make a renewed appearance. The coming of Jesus was meant to bring about the kingdom of God on earth with the offer of salvation for all, but the people struck out against the bearer of the message.

• By our prayer this Christmas, we can ensure that the newly born Jesus is welcome in our lives, even if his message turns some of our values on their heads.

The Third Week of Advent

December 17—December 23, 2017 Something to think and pray about each day this week: Preparing Our Hearts The great purge of every nook and cranny of our home has begun. We are in the process of sharing our toys, outgrown clothes, and superfluous belongings. We are letting go of the things we have held onto “just in case” and other things that have cluttered our lives just because we haven’t had the time to clear things out on a regular basis. The resulting space that we are recovering in our home is freeing. There is more room to move and more room to live. There is more space to focus on the things that really matter—and those things are not things.

As we clear the clutter from our home, I am reminded that Advent is a great time to clear the spiritual clutter as well. I ask myself, when Jesus comes, will there be room for him to stay, or will he find my heart and soul too cluttered? Am I hanging onto things I don’t need out of that “just in case” type of fear? Or, do I trust him enough to let everything go? Have I taken the necessary time to free up space for him? Is my priority, in fact, Jesus, or is it things or other attachments? When he comes, will I be able to respond to him freely, or will my movements be impeded by stuff that’s holding me back? My soul-cleaning goal is to be able to fling open the door to my heart and fearlessly let go of all of those things that might get in the way of his entry. Can I do this?

I acknowledge how I really am. It is the real me whom the Lord loves.
