SES SION 2

Created to Be Together

OUTCOMES

God shares his love with us. He wants us to share his love with others. How can we help someone in need?

SESSION 2

Sign of the Cross

Katie explained that the Sign of the Cross reminds us of the Trinity. We pray to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We pray to God our Father. He created all things because he loves us. We pray to the Son, Jesus. Jesus, the Son of God who became man, came to tell us of the Father’s love and to save us. We pray to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us to understand how much God loves us. The Spirit helps us show God’s love to others.

Love Bug Have children complete the Session 2 Blackline Master [T-235] to list ways they can show their love for others.

Identify practical ways to act on God’s invitation in everyday living.

Define Sign of the Cross.

Prayer Pray aloud the prayer together. Conclude by praying Amen.

Jesus, show me how to help those in need so that I can share your love for me.

Prayer

Community Pantomime If you have children with autism spectrum disorders, you can present the page content in a more visual way. For example, to illustrate community, gesture with wide arms to show inclusion while saying aloud the word community.

Explain that we bring God’s love to life in our world by loving others.

Solidarity

Inclusion: Autism Spectrum

Ask a volunteer to read aloud the session title and the text below the title. Encourage children to suggest various answers to the question. Say: In this session we will learn how to give praise to God.

“Why do we make that sign when we pray?” Julia asked.

IF TIME ALLOWS

Explain that we worship the Trinity when we pray the Sign of the Cross.

1 Start the Session

Each night before bed, Katie prayed the Sign of the Cross as she began her evening prayers. Julia copied her older sister, but she did not understand what her sister was doing.

3 Connect Read aloud the page. Ask: Who are the three Persons of the Holy Trinity? (God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) Ask: What have we learned about our Father? (He created all things because he loves us.) Why did Jesus come? (Jesus, the Son of God who became man, came to tell us of the Father’s love and to save us.) What does the Holy Spirit do? (helps us understand how much God loves us, helps us love others)

Teaching the Prayer Group children in pairs. Ask one child in each pair to imagine he or she has never prayed the Sign of the Cross. Have the other child in the pair teach this prayer to his or her partner. The child who teaches can choose to explain the prayer verbally or guide the partner’s hands through the prayer. Have children switch roles.
