Oración

3-Minute Retreat Before you prepare the session, pause and be still. Take three deep breaths and be aware of the loving presence of God, who is with you on this journey of growth and discovery.

Reflection All of creation reveals the wonder of God and teaches us about God’s great love for us. In this Psalm nature itself gives praise to God the Creator. Revealed in creation and in the Bible, God wants to be known intimately by each of us. God’s gift of love calls forth a response of love.

Prayer Speak to God, using the words of this prayer or your own. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise him all creatures here below, Praise him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding of the session content.
The Scripture verses from Psalm 148 call us to praise God for the wonders of the earth and the heavens. These wonders are awesome and humbling. In praise we profess our faith, acknowledge our dependence on God, and recognize that creation is a continual sign of God’s blessing. The created world is the result of God’s decision to share his life and love with us. God created the world for reasons of love. Everything has come from and returns to God. God’s love and beauty are reflected in all of creation. We can know God by reflecting on the beauty of the world. The Bible—the Word of God—teaches us to praise God for the wonder and beauty of creation.

Reflect Prayer: A Special Faith Prayer Knowing God
In this first session, be sure to promote a quiet and meditative environment for prayer. The opening prayer is a prayer of petition, and the closing prayer is a prayer of thanks. These prayers will focus on caring for God’s world as well as provide an opportunity for children to add their personal intentions. Children will also learn the first line of the Apostles’ Creed. San Ignacio de Loyola San Ignacio de Loyola nació en España en 1491. Creció en el seno de una familia noble en el castillo de Loyola. Fue soldado hasta que resultó herido en una batalla. Ahí regresó a su hogar para recuperarse y en ese tiempo leyó sobre la vida de Jesús y de los santos. Ignacio también quería convertirse en santo. Ignacio viajó al monasterio de Montserrat en España. Desde allí, contempló las montañas y muchas de las maravillosas criaturas de Dios. En el monasterio oró en la capilla de Nuestra Señora de Montserrat. Entregó su espada y prometió su vida a Dios. Se desprendió de su buena ropa y se vistió como un pobre.
1 Comenzar
Años más tarde, Ignacio escribió lo que había aprendido acerca de Dios y de Jesús. Su libro se titula Ejercicios espirituales. Lo escribió para ayudar a las personas a acercarse más a Dios. En su libro nos dice que Dios cuida de todas las cosas que ha creado. Si queremos conocer a Dios, podemos empezar por cuidar del mundo que Dios nos ha dado. La fiesta de san Ignacio es el 31 de julio.
Pida a los niños que abran sus libros en la página 1. Lea en voz alta el título de la unidad. Diga: La primera sesión nos ayudará a comprender que Dios es nuestro Creador y nuestro Padre. La creación de Dios nos demuestra su amor hacia nosotros.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola Saint Ignatius of Loyola was born in Spain in 1491. He grew up in a noble family in the castle of Loyola. He was a soldier until he was wounded in a battle. He went home to get well. There he read about the lives of Jesus and the saints. He wanted to become a saint too. Ignatius traveled to a monastery in Spain at Montserrat. There he saw the mountain and many of God’s wonderful creatures. He prayed at the shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat. He laid down his sword and pledged his life to God. He gave away his fine clothes and dressed as a poor man.

1 Begin Have children open their books to page 1. Read aloud the unit title. Say: Our first unit helps us understand that God is our Creator and Father. God’s creation shows us his love for us.
Later Ignatius wrote what he learned about God and Jesus. His book is called Spiritual Exercises. He wrote it to help people grow closer to God. He tells us that God cares for all the things he created. If we want to know God, we can begin by caring for the world God gives us. Ignatius’s feast day is July 31.
2 Introduce the Saint

Read aloud the top half of the page. Explain that Ignatius’s family was wealthy. Explain that a monastery is a place where some men live apart from the everyday world to give their lives to God. Ask: What did Ignatius say we should do if we want to know God? (We can start by taking care of the world around us.)

Have children turn to page 2. Fold your hands in prayer and have children do the same. Say: We are going to learn about a special prayer called the Apostles’ Creed.
We see the world around us and know that God blesses us and cares for us. We depend on him. We praise God to show that we believe in him. We pray a special prayer called the Apostles’ Creed to show our faith. An apostle was a special follower of Jesus’. A creed tells us what people believe. The Apostles’ Creed tells us what the apostles believed. It states the beliefs of our Catholic faith. This is how the Apostles’ Creed begins. Learn this part and pray it often.

Read aloud the heading and first paragraph. Have a volunteer read aloud the second paragraph. Point to the words in bold type and explain their meanings. Say: The apostles were close friends of Jesus. They followed him and taught others about him. Say: The Apostles’ Creed is a prayer that states what members of the Catholic Church believe. Today we are going to learn part of this Creed. Read aloud the first part of the prayer. Have children repeat it after you. As a group read the sentence one more time. Say: This Creed is a very long prayer, so we will learn it in small parts. Tell children they will learn the rest of the prayer later.

Say: Prayer is our special time with God. Let’s remember how much God loves us and pray the part of the Apostles’ Creed that we learned today. Read aloud the first paragraph of the prayer. 3-Minute Retreat Before you prepare the session, sit quietly for a few moments and clear your mind of distractions. Take three deep breaths and call to mind the love of the Trinity. Reflect on the love and the inspiration you receive from the Holy Trinity. 1 John 4:9,11 In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. . . . Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another.
Reflection Love is a life-giving force. It pushes aside isolation and fear. In this Scripture passage, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are made known to us as a community of love. The unity of the Trinity is a beautiful model of a loving union. When we experience the love of God, our life is changed both internally and externally. In Jesus we experience a new life. Filled with the love of God, we respond to loving others.
Scripture 1 John 4:7–11 speaks of God’s great love for us in sending his Son and calls us to love one another. 1 John 4:16 says that, through love, God lives in us and we in him.
Tradition God is the source of all love. God shows his love in creation by sending his only Son to save us. John explores the truth that we are capable of love because God loved us first. When we love others and ourselves, we are bringing to life the love God has for all. When we reflect on the love God has for us in Jesus Christ, we are reflecting on the essential mystery of the Trinity. The Trinity is the revelation of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are called to love God and our neighbor.

Another Prayer to the Trinity Katie told Julia of another prayer that praises God as the Trinity. She said, “When we pray the Glory Be to the Father, we are praising God, who created us. He is with us now, and he always will be.” Katie helped her sister pray this prayer.
Draw on the board a triangle. Ask: What might this shape remind us of? (the Trinity) At the top point, write God the Father. At one of the bottom points, write Jesus, the Son and at the other point, write Holy Spirit. Say: Now we’re going to learn about another prayer that helps us remember the Trinity.

God Is Our Father Knowing and Sharing Your Faith in Session 3
3-Minute Retreat Before you prepare the session, pause to quiet your mind. Take three deep breaths and remember that God the Father is with us at all times. Bring the love of his presence to your session.
Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding of the session content.
Scripture Matthew 6:9–14 teaches the Lord’s Prayer through Jesus’ words.
Matthew 6:9 This is how you are to pray:
2 Corinthians 1:3–4 tells of God’s compassion and encourages all people to be compassionate toward others.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Reflection Jesus shares the intimate relationship he has with God when he teaches us to pray to God as Father. Raising our hearts and minds in prayer, we address God in a personal way as our Father. The intimacy of a loving family mirrors the relationship we have with God as the Father who sustains us, forgives us, leads us, and protects us from evil.
Questions Do the words I use in prayer reflect a more intimate or distant relationship with God? How does the way I address God help me grow in appreciation in the value of all human life, including my own?
Prayer
Tradition When we say “Our Father,” the Lord’s Prayer calls us to express the qualities of childlike trust, intimacy, and ready access to God. Jesus prayed to God simply as Abba. Abba, an affectionate term, speaks to the intimate relation of Jesus with God. Jesus shares the meaning of his relationship with God with his disciples and with the entire human family. In the first part of the Lord’s Prayer, we praise and honor God. In the second part of the Lord’s Prayer, we pray for our welfare. Accepting God’s forgiveness, we take the first step toward forgiving one another. We ask God to help us receive what God wants for us, especially in times of temptation.

Jesus invites you to speak to the Father, using the words of this prayer or your own. Abba, Father, embrace me with your love.

As God’s Son, Jesus shows us what God is really like. He reveals that God is our Father, who cares for us as his children.
Read aloud the session title and the text below the title. Talk about why we pray. Say: In this session we are going to learn about a special way to pray.
As God’s children, we call God our Father, as Jesus did. Father, for Jesus, means the one who loves, forgives, and is good to his children. Sometimes Jesus called God Abba. That is a special name like Dad or Papa. Children all over the world use Father in their own language when they talk to God. The word for father in Spanish is padre; in German it is Vater. Do you know the word for father in another language?

Then tell them to write their questions around the outline of their question mark. Say: Think of these questions as we move through this session and see how many answers we find.

Write to Our Father Distribute paper and crayons so that children can write a short prayer to God our Father. Tell them that it can be a prayer of forgiveness, thanks, praise, or petition.

3 Connect Read aloud the heading and the first paragraph. Ask: What does reveal mean? (making known what was not known before) Ask children for examples. (Possible answers: telling the ending of a movie) Explain that Jesus reveals God to us. Say: Jesus revealed God to us. He told us that God is our Father who loves and cares for us. Read aloud the second paragraph. Write Abba on the board and pronounce it [AH bah]. Say: This is how Jesus referred to God, just as some children refer to their fathers as Dad or Papa. Read aloud the heading. Say: Jesus is with us today in many ways. He is with us when we pray.

Read aloud the first paragraph. Say: Hallowed is another word for holy. Trespasses are things we do that hurt someone, things that are wrong to do. Read aloud the adaptation from Matthew. Say: When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we are telling God we love him. We are asking God for things that we think will be good for us and asking him to give us the strength to forgive others. Pray the Lord’s Prayer together slowly. Say: These are Jesus’ words to us. He taught us how God wants us to be forgiving. Read Forgive Each Other and give children time to complete the activity.

The English and Spanish scripts are found on pages T-223–T-224 of the Catechist Guide. If you use the script, play reflective music softly in the background. Join the children in reflective prayer.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
We give glory to God, whose name is holy. We pray that what he wants for us and for the world will happen. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Letter to Saint Paul Tell children that when we write a letter or an e-mail, we like to receive one in return. Suggest that they write a short letter to Saint Paul, responding to the part of his letter on this page. Encourage children to thank Saint Paul for reminding them of all that God does for us and to say how they will help others as Saint Paul did.
FYI Coaching Children to Pray Before starting the prayer, ask children to picture themselves having a conversation with Jesus. Say: This is your opportunity to open your heart to Jesus about whatever is happening in your life.

Ask children to quiet themselves for prayer. Pray aloud the first paragraph and the first part of the Lord’s Prayer and the first reflection. Give children a moment to reflect. Pray aloud the next part of the Lord’s Prayer and the final reflection. Then give children time to talk to Jesus in their own words. Close by praying the Sign of the Cross. Say: Let’s talk about ways we can put Jesus’ teachings into practice.
2 Extend Have a child read aloud the heading, the introduction, and the activity. Give children a few moments to write their responses. Ask volunteers for their responses. Look for responses that demonstrate forgiveness. Say: It is always better to forgive than to stay angry and hold a grudge. Mateo 1:20–21 Ya lo tenía decidido, cuando un ángel del Señor se le apareció en sueños y le dijo: “José, hijo de David, no temas recibir a María como esposa tuya, pues la criatura que espera es obra del Espíritu Santo. Dará a luz un hijo, a quien llamarás Jesús, porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados”.
Mateo 1:18–23 dice cómo María concibió a Jesús por medio del Espíritu Santo para cumplir la profecía de Isaías. Deuteronomio 31:8 proclama la devoción de Dios hacia su pueblo.
La Tradición
Reflexión Dios envió a Jesús para ser nuestra Salvación. Por medio de la acción del Espíritu Santo, María se convirtió en la madre de Jesús. José, un buen hombre, sabía que él no era el padre del hijo de María, pero confió en Dios y aceptó a María, y por ende a Jesús, en su hogar. Aceptar a Jesús en nuestras vidas también requiere confiar en Dios. Jesús significa “Dios salva”, lo cual será el resultado de nuestras vidas cuando confiamos en Dios y aceptamos a Jesús en nuestra vida.

Jesus Is with Us Knowing and Sharing Your Faith in Session 4
3-Minute Retreat Before preparing the session, take a few moments to rest in the presence of God. Breathe deeply three times and reflect on the great gift God has given us in his Son, Jesus. Matthew 1:20–21 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Reflection God sent Jesus to be our Salvation. Through the action of the Holy Spirit, Mary became the mother of Jesus. Joseph, a good man, knowing that he was not the father of Mary’s child, trusted God and accepted Mary, and thereby Jesus, into his home. Accepting Jesus into our lives also requires trust in God. Jesus means “God saves,” foreshadowing the outcome of our lives when we trust God and accept Jesus into our lives.
Question How can I encourage children to trust God and accept Jesus into their lives?
Prayer Speak to the Holy Family, using the words of this prayer or your own. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, pray for me that my heart might trust God. Help me to encourage others and learn from children’s trust in you.
Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding of the session content.
Scripture Matthew 1:18–23 tells of Mary conceiving Jesus through the Holy Spirit in fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah. Deuteronomy 31:8 proclaims God’s devotion to his people.
Tradition Jesus ministered on earth, especially to those who were poor and suffering. He lived in perfect obedience to the Father to counteract the effect of the disobedience of Adam and Eve. The angel that appeared to Joseph told him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife. Joseph was open to the grace of God and listened to the angel. He cared for Mary and Jesus for the rest of his life. God the Father and Jesus the Son send the Holy Spirit to give us the grace to understand who Jesus is and what he has done for us. We too are called to trust God and accept Jesus into our lives.

A young woman named Mary was engaged to a good man named Joseph. An angel visited Joseph in a dream and told him that Mary would have a baby through the Holy Spirit. The angel said the baby’s name would be Jesus, which means “God saves us.” Jesus was to be our Savior. Jesus would also have the name Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” adapted from Matthew 1:18–23
Read aloud the session title and the text below the title. Say: In this session we will learn how God sent his Son, Jesus, to save us and to teach us how to live.
Joseph listened to the angel and trusted in God. He and Mary got married. Jesus, the Son of God, was born. Joseph cared for Mary and Jesus.

Ask: Who are some of the people whom you trust? Why do you trust them? (Accept reasonable responses.) Point out that in addition to our family and friends, we can also trust God. Say: When we place our trust in God, we live lives that are pleasing to him.
In the Scriptures we learn that the angel visited Joseph in a dream. Joseph listened to the angel. He trusted in God and cared for Jesus and Mary. We trust in God. Jesus, God’s Son who became man, is with us always. Even when we are alone or afraid, Jesus is with us. Sometimes we must listen to others. We trust our parents and teachers when we do not know what to do.

La Tradición
Para la Iglesia antigua la vida cristiana nunca era un asunto privado. Ser cristiano te identificaba con la Iglesia, donde Jesús habita. La carta a los Colosenses nos llama a revestirnos de “profunda compasión, de amabilidad, de humildad, de mansedumbre, de paciencia” (Colosenses 3:12). Cuando nos podemos identificar los unos con los otros poniendo en práctica estas virtudes, podemos alabar a Dios, cantar salmos, himnos y canciones espirituales juntos. Esta es la vida a la que Jesús nos llama cuando celebramos la misa durante el Tiempo Ordinario. Respondemos al don de Jesús en acción de gracias.
El Tiempo Ordinario se celebra los domingos en dos períodos distintos. El primer período es después del tiempo litúrgico de la Navidad hasta el Miércoles de Ceniza. El segundo período es después del tiempo litúrgico de la Pascua hasta el primer domingo de Adviento. Hay 33 o 34 domingos durante el Tiempo Ordinario. El término Tiempo Ordinario se basa en la palabra ordinal, que se refiere a un orden. Estos son los domingos en los que la Iglesia reflexiona sobre el misterio de Cristo en su día a día. Reflection For the early Church, Christian life was never a private affair. To be Christian identified you with the Church, where Christ dwells. The letter to Colossians calls us to treat one another with “heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” (Colossians 3:12). When we are able to relate to one another by practicing these virtues, we can praise God, singing together psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. This is the life Jesus calls us to as we celebrate the Mass during Ordinary Time. We respond to Jesus’ gift in thanksgiving.
Question What can I do to participate even more fully at Mass?
Ordinary time is celebrated on Sundays in two distinct periods. The first period is after the Christmas season until Ash Wednesday. The second period is after the Easter season until the First Sunday of Advent. There may be 33 or 34 Sundays in Ordinary Time. The term Ordinary Time is based on the word ordinal, meaning “numbered days.” These are the Sundays in which the Church reflects on the mystery of Christ in his day-today life. It is during this time we ask for Christ’s saving help, especially by receiving him in the Eucharist. We live out our commitment to Christ in our daily lives through the community of the Church. Together with the Church we are a sign of Christ’s presence in the world.

Celebrating Ordinary Time Each year the Church celebrates special feasts and seasons that help us remember the great things God has done to save us and how much he loves us. The liturgical year is the Church’s calendar. Ordinary Time is celebrated two times during each liturgical year— between Christmas and Ash Wednesday, and between Easter and Advent.

Inclusion: Autism Spectrum Feasts and Seasons Cards If you have children with autism spectrum disorders, you can make a cue card for the main feasts or seasons of the liturgical year. On the card write the name of the feast or season and draw a symbol for it. Use these cards as visual aids when you are discussing various seasons and feasts. You might say: Ordinary Time [display card] is a time to be grateful.
Make Your Own Time Line Distribute a long strip of paper, perhaps cut from a roll, to each child. Provide markers, glitter, and other tools so that children can make colorful time lines of their own. Have children show each month of the year. Encourage them to make Ordinary Time stand out however they wish. Save their time lines so they can add special feasts and seasons they learn about during Celebrating sessions.

Read aloud the session title and the first paragraph. Have children turn to page 106 in their books to look at the liturgical calendar. Ask: What are some of the Church seasons and feasts that we celebrate? (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ordinary Time) Have a volunteer read aloud the second paragraph on page 18. Ask: When do we celebrate Ordinary Time? (between Christmas and Ash Wednesday, and between Easter and the First Sunday of Advent) Say: In this session we’ll read about Ordinary Time—the time of year when we learn to be grateful for our Church community.

Hold up a parish bulletin. Ask: Does anyone look at their parish bulletins? What kind of information do you read in them? (Accept reasonable answers.)
When you go to Mass during Ordinary Time, you often receive a parish bulletin that tells about the life of the church. As you read the bulletin, you will learn about opportunities to love and serve others in your community and around the world.

Read aloud the heading and the first two paragraphs. Explain that a parish bulletin tells about the events and activities in a church. Hold up the bulletin again and read aloud a few examples. Ask: What do these examples say about the Church community? Discuss the importance of going to church with others. Ask: How would Sunday Mass feel different if you attended alone? Then invite children to complete the activity My Parish.
