For the greater glory of God —St. Ignatius of Loyola Parents, Students, Alumni and Friends of Loyola, Two National Merit Winners, ten Literary Rally Awards, over 17,000 hours of service to our community, six District championships, forty-four Academic All State Athletes, over 1000 local families fed, the list goes on. What a special class. Four short years ago, I began a journey at Loyola, together with the incoming Class of 2017 and I as the new school principal. Who could have imagined the extraordinary moments these four years would bring? The Class of 2017 has left an indelible impression on our school, a legacy that will last for years, and I thank them for their leadership and the joy of getting to experience these four years with them and with all of the students, faculty, alumni and friends that have comprised our Loyola Family.

As we come to the close of another year, it is imperative that we all remember exactly what it means to be a Flyer and what it means to have earned a diploma from a school unlike any other. A diploma from Loyola is an insurance policy with the premium paid in full, first by the parents, faculty, alumni, and donors who so generously pour their time, talent, and treasure into our students, always encouraging their best. That premium is paid secondly by the effort of our students, whose service and student involvement, paired with a dedication to academic excellence, prepares them not only to excel in the classroom but also to act as men and women for others throughout their lives.

A Loyola diploma also represents an excellent education, a chance to experience the joy of learning, exposure to the diverse beliefs and traditions that drive an ever more interdependent and complex world. It is an education that has shaped generations of Flyers, helped mold them into leaders who serve others with both humility and excellence. Statistics show that this Catholic education is also a passport, helping to usher graduates into opportunities for higher earnings and protection against tough economic times.

I want to thank all of you who make the Loyola experience something special. Something unforgettable. Thank you all for being part of this “great year to be a Flyer!” I pray you have a restful summer, and I look forward to seeing you and your students in the fall.

From the Bishop

Bishop Duca Encourages us to Hope in the Lord Bishop Michael Duca offers words of strength to remember in times of crisis and in times of great joy.

When I was named Bishop of Shreveport almost nine years ago, I chose as my motto, “Hope in the Lord.” I chose this motto because I believe in a world with so many challenges, we need to be reminded that Christ is THE Light of the world who alone can dispel all darkness and despair. I have a quote that hangs on my wall, attributed to Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta that reads, “Never let anything so fill you with sorrow that you forget the JOY of Christ Risen.”

Yet as I write this, I am aware that I am preaching to the choir, so to speak. A high school such as Loyola College Prep is an enthusiastic center for hope, creativity, optimism and lively faith. The seniors graduating are filled with hope for their futures in spite of the sadness of change. Our youth, you the students of Loyola College Prep, fill the Church, the community and your family with the hope you witness for the future. We are more hopeful because of you. This is one of the qualities of hope; that Hope can be shared. When we are down and lose our way, how many times has someone come to us and shared their hope with us, encouraged us, gave us a new way to see an answer, a new path, and out of that conversation, that visit, we were once again hopeful? Your Hopeful

I pray you never lose HOPE and an enthusiasm for Life. But for Hope to endure through the successes and trials of life it must ultimately be rooted in THE ultimate hope, Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Stay close to Him through the sacraments, the scriptures and prayer. Stay connected to your Church family because they can continually share their hope with you in difficult times.

This hope comes from faith and is THE LIGHT that can dispel any darkness or despair. So I send you off with my motto, “HOPE IN THE LORD” and never let anything so fill you with sorrow that you forget the joy of Christ Risen.

The Bishop Desmond General Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Plaque is awarded to the Catholic male se-

nior who best combines spiritual leadership, loyalty, achievement, and scholarship throughout his four years of high school. By vote of the faculty, this year’s award was merited by Benjamin Oliver Hyde.

The Bert Adams/ Ray Riser Spirit Award was created by the Loyola Parents Association to acknowledge the female senior athlete who best exemplifies Loyola’s competitive spirit, fairness, loyalty, sportsmanship, and the true spirit of Loyola Athletics. By vote of the senior class, this year’s award was merited by Marie Alma Marcalus.

The Michael Bovenzi Award was created in 2006 by the Class of 1999 to honor their classmate who passed away in 2004. The award is presented to the senior male athlete who best exemplifies respect, humlity, and Loyola pride and spirit. This year’s award was merited by Wilton Jospeh Barlow.

The Jessie Sage Chant Scholarship was established in 2007 and is given to one graduating male and one graduating female with the in-

tent that the scholarship assist in college tuition. Mrs. Chant, a 1932 graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy, was dedicated to Catholic education and to providing assistance for students to further their education. This year’s scholarships were merited by Angela Thien Trang Nguyen and

Christian Paul Shamburg.

The National Merit Scholarship Winner Award was merited by Benjamin Michael Haddock and Harrison Garrett Rosen.

Ben Hyde named Flyer of the Year The Flyer of the Year is the most prestigious award bestowed by the faculty of Loyola College Prep. The person who is selected must show the qualities that reflect the school’s motto of “A Man For Others.”

Senior Ben Hyde is this year’s recipient of Loyola’s highest honor. “It means the world to me to be selected as Flyer of the Year!

Loyola has taught me a lot and has made me a better man,” says Hyde of his recognition.

Taking the reins of the Garden Park partnership with Loyola students as well as serving as one of the F.Ai.T.H. chairs this year, Hyde exemplifies the dedication to service and leadership Loyola instills in its students.

When asked if he set Flyer of the Year as a goal of his, Hyde says, “It has never been one of my goals to win Flyer of the Year. It has been one of my goals to represent Loyola well.” When asked what attributes lent themselves to his

Valedictory Address

Living With Purpose

Ali Faust, the valedictorian for the Class of 2017, was given the honor of delivering the commencement address. Here, she charges her fellow graduates with three important components of both a successful and meaningful life.

Good evening graduates, faculty, family, and friends! Thank you all for joining us on this momentous occasion. It is an honor to be here to celebrate Loyola’s class of 2017. We all know that at LCP there is an expectation of excellence in the classroom as well as in extracurricular activities, but I wanted to recap the lessons LCP has taught us as we transition to the next step in our lives. I condensed these morals into three statements that I like to call a “moral bucket list.”

Number one on the moral bucket list: you can never say thank you enough. As graduates, we have many things to be thankful for, especially our parents and our teachers. Thank you to our parents for the sacrifices made to send us to Loyola. You were our first teachers. You taught us things like how to tie our shoes, the importance of personal hygiene, and how to drive. From little boys and little girls to the young adults were are today, we take the lessons you have taught us as we enter into the next chapter of our lives. To our teachers, even though we were a handful at times, thank you for sharing your passion with us. You modeled a love for life-long learning. You showed us what a commitment to serving others looks like. Finally, thank you Loyola for teaching us how to be grateful even through all the struggles of high school such as academic deadlines, sports injuries, and the whirlwind otherwise known as the college application process. So in accordance with number one on the moral bucket list, thank you parents, teachers, and Loyola.

The second task on the moral bucket list: have grit. Grit is defined as “perseverance and passion for long term goals.” Stay true to yourself even when faced with adversity. “Live for your eulogy, not your resume.” Have conviction in your beliefs, even if it’s not the easiest option, and your resume will take of itself. At LCP we learned to stick with our long term goals with a fierce determination, while still appreciating the value of being humble. As we go on to the next stage in our lives, number two on the moral bucket list will remind us to be courageous and be bold.

Finally, number three on the moral bucket list: be giving. We all have gifts and talents. The Class of 2017 has a variety of them.

There are people who could be on Broadway one day, people who

could work for NASA as well as be loving mothers and fathers. Use your gifts to serve others. Like Mother Theresa said, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a small drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” God equipped us all with the skills we need to serve others. Whatever your God-given talent may be, use it generously and wholeheartedly.

In the spirit of the moral bucket list, on behalf of the class of 2017, thank you again to our parents, teachers, and Loyola. We pledge to have grit when confronted with challenging situations, and to generously give our talents and time to serve others. As the newest alums embodying the 115 years of Jesuit tradition, we promise to honor St. Ignatius of Loyola, as we go forth and set the world on fire. Congratulations, Flyers!

Salutatory Adress Salutatory Address Takes a Look at the Familial Bond Among Class of 2017 Salutatorian, Carrigan English, walks us through the four years that the Class of 2017 has spent together and reminds us of the important bond created among them through their journey.

Passionate. Involved. Welcoming. These are a few of the many words that comes to mind when thinking about the Class of 2017 sitting before you today. You have already heard that this class contains some very well rounded students. We excel not only in the classroom, but also on the field and in the community.

But I would like to focus on the Class of 2017 as a family. Walking into the gym freshman year, I would have never believed that these people on stage with me today would become my second family. I was the shy girl who had her small group of friends, her studies, and a bow in her hair from time to time. I believed I was set for high school.

I had never been more wrong. Due to the expectation to become involved here at Loyola College Prep, I was encouraged to join many clubs from the onset of freshman year. What a discomfort this was for that shy little girl! But with the support and love of many new friends and the faculty, I was able to break out of my shell and begin to experience new and unique opportunities. I realized my full academic potential through the difficulty of courses offered to me, and I finally became comfortable with speaking in front of a crowd through extracurriculars such as SGA and Key Club. All of this was made possible through this amazing school and the fantastic class of 2017.

As the years have gone by, again like a family, we were able to encourage one another to achieve all of our goals, whether it was to

collect enough cans to feed 1200 families for F.Ai.T.H., to tackle a surprise writing prompt, or to defeat our arch rivals on the field. Each and every one of us has become who we are today due to the impact we as students have had on one another. We have become better.

From orientation to senior year, our class had truly become bonded as a family. At our senior lock-in, it became evident to the Class of 2017 that we would have to say goodbye to Loyola. Like a family, we were all able to be vulnerable. Like a family, we were willing to listen to one another, free of judgment. And like a family, we were able to be a shoulder to cry on. These are the moments that truly make me realize that leaving Loyola means leaving my family. I would like to thank my class for all the good times and memories we have built together. Through much laughter and many tears, we have finally made it through high school and are continuing on to the next chapter of our lives.

Beyond my classmates, it is important to also thank two major groups: the faculty and our parents. Without the faculty of Loyola College Prep, none of us would be standing on this stage today. The faculty, who has offered their early mornings, their lunch periods, and even their time after school where they wish to do nothing more than to go home, to help us when we could not grasp the lesson. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to you.

While Loyola is like our second family, we are eternally grateful to our personal families. Our families have always been there for us,whether we had good or bad days. Thank you for the late nights. Thank you for putting up with all the tears. Mostly, thank you, mom and dad, for the unconditional live that has made us proud of who we are and what we have accomplished.

So classmates, friends, and family, the challenge now is to continue to fly high like Snoopy, our beloved mascot, against the Red Baron, and to demonstrate to the world what it means to be a Loyola Flyer.

State of the School Address

Class of 2016 Continues Loyola’s Tradition of Excellence

Student Government Association President Missy Barro provides a year in review, highlighting five characteristics demonstrated through our academic excellence, student involvement, and faith in action throughout this year.

It has been an absolute honor to serve this year as Student Body President and a remarkable year it has been indeed. This has been one of the most successful transitions into school we have seen, despite our very wild start. We had six new faculty members, two foreign exchange students, two student visitors from Argentina, and the largest freshman class that Loyola has ever seen.

This year, we have done much more than commit our mission statement to memory. This year, we have taken it to heart. Our

mission is to create men and women of conscience, character, and compassion, continuing the Jesuit Catholic tradition of discipline, academic excellence, student involvement, and faith in action for “The Greater Glory of God.” The virtues we exemplify most effectively reflect this phenomenal student body , and are those we have cultivated by putting the mission statement into practice are: knowledge, creativity, selflessness, strength, and spirit.

Knowledge Our students are able to excel academically.

With recognitions received from the district and state rallies, quiz bowl to an outstanding chess tournament, Loyola has it all. We saw the Science Bowl bring home a fourth place finish in the state tournament and the science Olympiad bring home first place in the region III science Olympiad competition. We saw forty-two AP scholars. We are very proud that two of our seniors leave as national merit scholars, and eighty-two percent of our senior

Campus News class earned merit-based scholarships. As a whole, our student body achieved an average of 25.6 on the ACT, which is 3.9 points above the national average. With fifty percent of our juniors and seniors taking AP courses this year, it is evident that academic excellence is something our Flyers take pride in. Congratulations, our expectations have been exceeded, and we are look forward to watching the underclassman raise the bar.

Creativity Our school shines when it comes to the arts.

Our drama program continues to impress us as they received superior in the state rally with their performance of Violet Sharp and absolutely blew us away with their performance of Songs For A New World. Thanks also goes to the LCP choir, who have inspired new zeal surrounding our weekly Masses.

This year we saw students stretch their creativity beyond the walls of Loyola; three seniors have entered Junior Louisiana Film Festival, and their short films will premiere next weekend at Art Break. We are continually updated through our weekly news sources, “The Rundown” and The Flyer, which have provided journalism and media production opportunities for our students. “The Show” continues to make us all laugh. This year also marks the advent of our new literary arts magazine, the first annual LYRA. Through this magazine, our students will be able to showcase their poems, short-short stories, and art pieces.

Our art classes not only produce exceptional pieces but also they have partnered with Holy Angels to provide creative craft projects for the residents. Through the arts students are able to discover new talents and unique interests.

Selflessness This year we have seen our Loyola community put Faith in Action like never before. Within the first three weeks of school, South Louisiana faced torrential flooding. The waters devastated over 60,000 homes and impacted over 500,000 people, which is eleven percent of our state. Our student body successfully raised over $10,000 to support a partnering Catholic high school very much like our own. Additionally, each Loyola student often exceeds the 100 hour service requirement.

The Key Club and its sponsor was honored by the VOA due to their outstanding service this year, National Honor Society has done a remarkable job hosting the middle school academic rallies and offering tutoring services for middle schools in our area, and our Garden Park team continues to give their time to the residents, providing important connections as well as teaching them a few new computer tricks. (So if you get a snapchat from grandma, you can thank our LCP students). The Student Government Association has worked tirelessly year around to host the

Freshman Orientation, dances, Challenge Day, and so much behind the scenes work. The most notable service club, F.Ai.T.H., was again successful in its effort to provide Christmas food baskets for families in the area. The faith chairmen and officers went above and beyond this year, in order to create 1,200 baskets, the largest the organization has ever seen.

With thirty cans per basket, our F.Ai.T.H. team tossed around 360,000 cans for this event.

With the discovery of an underlying blood disorder, one of those chairmen, continued to demonstrate the selfless spirit by leading the Loyola blood drive, which collected fifty-four units of blood and impacted 132 lives. The foundation of a Loyola education is giving back, taking our talents and finding ways to use them selflessly. Service is the hallmark of our school and it is evident that -HERE- we put our faith in action.

Strength In addition to the other areas of involvement, in the realm of sports, it is great to be a Flyer.

From all corners, Loyola has certainly made it’s name known. Breaking long held records, our football boys have made an indelible mark for years to come. Having a 9-1 record in the regular season and beating a 5A team, our boys have proven that we are mighty.

Our soccer girls stormed New Orleans in a hard-fought fight for the championship title.

As State runners-up, our girls held their heads high and continued to exemplify genuine sportsmanship, all in the name of friendship and family. We earned District Champ titles in football, lacrosse, softball, baseball, and in boys and girls basketball and soccer. We’ve seen extraordinary skill in volleyball, bowling, and fishing this year. One of our most participated sports, cross country, and track have proved exceptional under new leadership.

Our baseball, softball, and our lady golfers are in full swing right now, and our tennis team won state titles again this year. And let us quickly reflect on the competitive drive between faculty and students, specifically the fun filled faculty vs. Student basketball game where one student and faculty demonstrated again what it means to be family. With all this in mind, Loyola athletics would not be half as incredible if it wasn’t for our lovely fans. We never failed to have smiles on our faces and pride in our teams.

growth was inspired by the visit of the heart of St. John Berchmans, which was a phenomenal way for the community to come together to celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. John’s canonization. In total, 14,000 people made a pilgrimage to our cathedral to venerate the relic. The heart journeyed from the Vatican to sit here on Jordan street with us. Its presence serves as a reminder of our school’s rich history that is forged within our faith.

In conclusion, I would like to add a few thank you’s.

To the freshmen: Thank you for keeping us all on our toes and making sure your voices are heard. We as seniors were taken aback when you walked in on the first day with heads held high; it was not the typical case of timid freshman fish. Y’all have proved that their really is strength in numbers and family.

To the sophomores, the ultimate sufferers of middle child syndrome: Thank you all for being patient and rolling with the punches.

Y’all are always eager to offer a smile and can find joy in any situation.

And to the juniors: Thank you for confiding in us seniors when it comes to senioritis, you all have faced your hardest year, and now it’s your turn to steal the spotlight, so use it wisely. As the seniors leave for good, we leave the legacy of Loyola in your hands and we are more than confident that you will write the new chapter with an unwavering finesse that cannot be matched.

And to the seniors: The energy and genuine happiness that you carry will be greatly missed. We fought the moms leaving Cicero everyday, we gave new meaning to the color purple, and we have proven ourselves to be leaders above all else.

Finally to Loyola: Thank you providing us a home for the past four years. Even the Advance Ed Accreditation team recognized that at Loyola “there is a place for everyone.”

Between the unforgettable Friday night football games, the irreplaceable DMC’s from the senior lock in, and the forever made friendships we share. We will cherish all of them.

Loyola has molded us into the young men and women who sit in front of you today, and who are grateful to their parents for the gift of a Loyola education. We are prepared “ to go forth a Set the World on Fire.”

So, What is the State of the School? The State of the School is good, very good.

Faithfulness This year has been marked by spiritual growth. Faith is found in many clubs on campus such as FCA, Flyers for Life and the two new clubs Friends of Rachel and Faith on Fire.

And these programs encourage students to reach a deeper level of faith, one that can be reflected in our school. In the Cathedral, we completed the Year of Mercy and welcomed seven new confirmed members into the Catholic faith, the largest number this school has witnessed. A crucial element of our spiritual

Loyola Faculty, Students, and Staff Celebrate Re-Accreditation Stephanie Johnson, Assistant Principal of Academics, takes a look at Loyola’s re-accreditation process, the findings of the committee, and the strengths of the school.

This school year, the faculty and staff at Loyola College Prep were engaged in the process of re-accreditation through AdvancED. To achieve accreditation, we embarked on a year-long intensive journey that involved a lot of collaboration, writing, and self-reflection.

All Loyola faculty were divided in groups and completed self-assessments where we discovered our strengths and weaknesses over five standards that looked at our Mission, Leadership, Instruction, Support Services, and Continuous Improvement. This selfstudy required multiple faculty inservice days and took the better part of the fall semester.

Following the self study, we were required to gather “evidence” to demonstrate our findings. The last step of the process took place in March – our external review. For two days, a team of five educators from across the state visited Loyola to observe every class, examine our curriculum and instructional practices, interview a sampling of stakeholders, and evaluate our school as a whole.

Loyola was recommended for re-accreditation for another five year period. Part of the process requires the team to give each school areas where improvement efforts should be focused. The areas the team noted for us were ones we recognized in our self-assessment.

Over a five-year period, we plan to: • Focus on differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all learners • Bring in a consultant to inservice the entire faculty on analyzing data • Facilitate clearer communication

Flyer Community Develops Closeness in Sharing Faith With the addition of the new student-led FAITH ON FIRE organization at Loyola have come some special changes in the school atmosphere. Along with facilitating events and hosting a dynamic speaker for Catholic School’s Week, FAITH ON FIRE has introduced a unique opportunity for students and teachers to eat lunch and share their faith together.

During the Faith Sharing Group sessions, students and teachers watch a short video targeting a specific area of personal growth. The most recent session featured a video which raised the questions, “What are my gifts, and

how can I more freely and effectively use those in God’s plan for me?” The groups then discussed their thoughts on the topic. Senior theology teacher and FAITH ON FIRE sponsor Michelle Brown says the genesis of the new small groups came from what she was seeing in the classroom. “It became evident in teaching that students were looking for a means to share their thoughts and questions in smaller groups. There are some things you can’t really share in front of the class.” Brown credits the success of the groups to the open and honest interaction between students and teachers.

They were most impressed with our commitment to community service, the Socratic seminar they observed in a classroom, our technology resources, and our college and career planning process. During the stakeholder interview process, three quotes stood out to the team. We feel these three quotes sum up why our parents choose a Loyola education.

Parents and students said the following: • “Teachers want to be here.”

• “There is a place for everyone here.”

• “Being here is a blessing, and now it’s our turn to bless others.”

The teachers have also gained some important insight into students’ daily struggles and have had an opportunity not only to learn from, but also to be inspired by student perspectives on living their faith. Faith Sharing Group participant Max Hyde, Loyola junior, echoes Brown in his endorsement of the small groups. “I like the groups,” says Hyde. “They create a greater sense of community and give us an opportunity to share our experiences with God with each other. I also think having teachers in the group blends well. They have so much more experience, and it’s been good to be able to learn from them.”

Participation in the Faith Sharing groups has certainly drawn students and teachers closer to God and to each other. Junior theology teacher Johnathon Goff has nothing but praise for his experience in the faith Sharing Group. “These groups exemplify what it means to exist in a Christian community. We participate in building each other up as the Body of Christ, encouraging each other in a virtuous life in Christ.” FAITH ON FIRE is planning one final meeting for the year this month, but hopes to make the Faith Sharing Groups a regular part of Loyola’s faith in action throughout next year.

Loyola’s Nugent Stays Active Through the Summer

Summer is a great and busy time for the Shreveport theatre community, and Loyola’s theatre teacher Laura Nugent is at the heart of much of this summer’s offerings. She will be spending her mornings directing and choreographing five to thirteen year olds in Madagascar Junior at Shreveport Little Theatre and will be spending her evenings directing and choreographing Thoroughly Modern Millie with college students and adults from the community.

As if that weren’t enough to keep her busy, Nugent will also serve as the Camp Director for Robinson Film Center Summer Camps.

She is assisting students in writing and directing three films for Robinson this summer that will culminate in a premier of each film.

Nugent will top off her summer activities by teaching a concentrated summer camp in Musical Theatre at both Shreveport Little Theatre and Loyola’s own Musical Theatre camp as well. She will kick off the fall by attending a National Theatre Conference in September and will serve as Matron of Honor at her best friend’s wedding.

When asked about her busy summer schedule, Nugent says, “I know summer should be a time to relax but I find it beneficial as a theatre practitioner to really jump in and share my creative side with both students and adults. I will be working with a few LCP Students in Madagascar Jr. and Thoroughly Modern Millie as well as the LCP Musical Theatre, and I think it’s a great opportunity for theatre students to see their teacher in both the community as well as school.”

Arabella Touchstone has Artwork Selected for Sunflower Trail & Festival Rising sophomore Arabella Touchstone was honored to have her work selected and featured by the Sunflower Trail & Festival which will take place on Saturday, June 17, in Gilliam, Louisiana. Touchstone’s piece, along with submissions by Loyola’s Sarah Curnutt and Julia Aiello, was purchased by the Historical Society for permanent display.

Their work was selected from submissions from all over the Parish.

The event will feature art and entertainment for all ages including handmade items for sale by heritage crafters and artists, hands-on arts and crafts activities for children, art exhibits, a sunflower photography contest and more. Food and refreshment vendors will be available at the festival, and lunch will be served at nearby businesses including Main Street Restaurant and Adger’s Store in Gilliam, as well as The Wild Petunia and D&I General Store in Belcher. Live music will be performed in the festival area. Admission is free and open to the public.

Loyola Welcomes new Director of Advancement

Carrigan English Named 2017 Student of the Year This year’s representative from Loyola for the recognition of Student of the Year

is senior Carrigan English.

Annually, Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Shreveport compete in the State Student of the Year Program. First-place winners at the Diocesan level in grades 5, 8 and 12 then proceed to the non-public school regional competition.

Winners from the regional competition proceed to the state contest with students from public and non-public schools in Louisiana.

The state requires school-level winners to prepare a portfolio including a biographical sketch, academic achievements, leadership activities, recognitions and evidence of service and citizenship efforts. Additionally, the students must prepare a writing sample, which is judged for clarity, originality, interest appeal and grammar.

Interviews are held at the regional and state Levels. The interviews are structured around questions and topics appropriate to the academic level of the students.

The judges consider: poise, confidence, fluency in speaking, ability to relate his or her ideas, voice projection, focus, factual support of their position and body language and eye contact.

New Director of Advancement, Melanie Johnson This year Loyola welcomed Melanie Johnson to serve as our new Director of Advancement. Johnson, who most recently served as Southfield’s Director of Advancement through 2012 and then as Alumni and Special Events Director until coming to Loyola at the start of this year, says her “first year at Loyola has been great. Everyone has been warm and welcoming, and I’ve loved learning about Loyola’s traditions as well as the everyday activities at the school.”

Johnson kicked off the year with her biggest job: creating a new Loyola website.

The new design, along with an expansion of Loyola’s app and social media presence, has given Loyola a digital face lift and created new avenues for interaction.

One of Johnson’s first priorities when she came on board was to help create clearer lines of communication among all the stakeholders. “My ultimate job is to match donor’s passions with the school’s needs,” says Johnson, and she hopes to see even more involvement from students, parents, faculty, alumni, and friends in the coming year.

When asked about the most notable difference she encountered during her transition, Johnson says, “The kids are bigger!”

On Thursday, February 16, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, the first person shot at Columbine High School in 1999, joined Rachel’s uncle, Larry Scott, to speak during a morning assembly about Rachel’s Challenge.

Darrel Scott and his wife Sandy Scott started Rachel’s Challenge soon after the Columbine High School Massacre. The focus of Rachel’s Challenge is to empower students to actively and intentionally practice kindness, an initiative started when Rachel’s parents read in her diary about her desire to start a chain reaction of kindness by inspiring others to do the same.

The day was full of activities for students,

parents, and friends of Loyola. Here is Mrs. Hymel’s rundown of the day: “We will have a morning assembly. We have invited a few students and administration from our feeder schools and two or three students from St. Frederick to attend. That afternoon, we will have a training session for students to begin their own groups to promote this idea of a chain reaction. Up to a hundred of our students will be trained. .”

This is a wonderful opportunity for our Loyola family to interact with each other and with other schools. By participating in this challenge, we can help promote Rachel’s ideals of kindness and compassion throughout our school and surrounding community.

We are very lucky to have this chance to grow and learn through this inspiring story and program. Also, a big thank you to the Loyola Parents Association for sponsoring this program The morning assembly presentation focused on Rachel’s story and the impact she

Campus News made on those she came in contact with. Her faith and kindness were witnessed by many and she carried out her mission of spreading kindness and compassion. It was truly an honor to have Rachel’s father and uncle speak at our school and their message will stay with us as we work to create a chain reaction of kindness.

Sponsors from different clubs selected the 100 students for further training. That evening, a community event was held which included our students, parents, friends, alumni, and seventh and eighth graders from our feeder schools.

When I had the chance to interview Darrell Scott, Rachel’s father, I asked him to share his favorite aspect of the program. He responded by saying that “The story of Adam reaches me the deepest because he was going to take his own life. I’ve often thought what would have happened if my daughter had not just walked over and stood up for Adam. There would be another grave in another cemetery. But, because she chose to do something, this wasn’t the case.” After he told me this story, he said that he was reminded of a quote: “The only thing we have to do to let evil rule the world is nothing.” He said, “We must do something.

And Rachel did.”

Mr. Scott hoped that the students who saw this presentation and went through the training felt “empowered and could feel like they could make a difference that can last for months and years to come.” After sharing his story with so many schools and reaching so many people, I asked him if there had been any surprising responses to the program. He responded saying that “the suicide prevention is always a surprising aspect of the program.

Once a young man that was the biggest bully in school heard Rachel’s story. After hearing her message, he took a piece of cardboard and wrote the words ‘I’m Sorry’. He then stood in front of the school and walked in front of the buses to let people know he had changed.” I asked Mr. Scott what he thought had helped Rachel begin her path of kindness. He stated that “she was born with it. She had a kind heart and would read writings from people like Martin Luther King Jr. She always looked up to people who were for the underdog. These writings were just fuel for the fire because she knew her purpose was to make kindness something other people would do.”

That afternoon after the training, it was easy to see how this presentation made an impact on our Loyola family. Ali Faust, one of the students to go through training, predicted “that there will be an increased overall awareness of kindness towards others. Instead of the negative actions standing out to us, the positive actions will stand out, and we will appreciate them more.” Throughout the year, it has been exciting to see how our Loyola community has used these new tools to spread light and hope instead of darkness.

Ben Hyde Leads the Charge to be Men and Women for Others Loyola students, under co-ordinator Ben Hyde practice more than corporal works of mercy, they have made friends as they serve the residents at Garden park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Loyola senior Ben Hyde serves as the student coordinator for the Loyola SGA’s Garden Park Nursing Home community outreach.

Three years ago, a local nursing home contacted Loyola’s Student Government Association about their need for student volunteers to come out once a week to help residents learn how to use iPads and give technology assistance. Eager to help, Hyde, along with other students, began going as a volunteer worker. The nursing home coordinated the visits and activities in the beginning, but asked to have a student coordinator after the first year. Hyde readily accepted this responsibility.

As part of his work as coordinator, he schedules student volunteers and plans the programs for the residents each week.

Technology learning time, different arts and crafts activities, and time for visiting with the residents are all included in each week’s program. Additionally, Hyde plans a theme for each week’s activities, and his brother Max Hyde comes on each visit to play the violin for the residents. The Garden Park residents have grown so close to the Loyola student group, that they painted a “welcome back” banner for students at their first visit of this school year in August.

In order to keep the program alive after he graduates this year, Ben is working with new, younger student coordinators to make the transition seamless. What originally began as a few Loyola students visiting an assisted living facility, has grown into a weekly event everyone, both Garden Park residents and Loyola students, looks forward to. Through Hyde’s hard work and dedication, the Garden Park initiative was presented with Louisiana Nursing Home Association’s Group Volunteer Award.

In addition to his work with Garden Park residents, Hyde also serves as one of the chairmen for F.Ai.T.H. – Flyers Aiding the Hungry. F.Ai.T.H. is an organization started by a Loyola student over 25 years ago that gives food baskets and Christmas gifts to families

in need in our surrounding community. For two years as a F.Ai.T.H. member, and last year as a F.Ai.T.H. officer, Ben worked so tirelessly that he was chosen to be one of four chairmen for this year’s event. As a F.Ai.T.H. chair, Ben is responsible for working with area businesses to sponsor food baskets, organizing canned food drives for students, speaking to parent and alumni groups, working with local nonprofits to identify those in need, and organizing the actual event day. On F.Ai.T.H. day, laundry baskets must be filled with various canned goods, ham, bread, rice, and other food staples, and Christmas gifts are organized, so that when community members come, they can receive their basket and gift.

In previous years, chairs have set it up to give away 600-700 baskets. Last year’s chairmen were able to give away 900 baskets in one afternoon; this year Ben and his co-chairs have a goal of 1,200 baskets!

Hyde says of the motivation behind his service, “I do it because it’s important to me to put my faith into action. There is importance in selfless actions, and these projects give so many people a chance to be a part of serving others. As people contribute as they are able, with a single canned good or money for F.Ai.T.H. or in spending time with the residents at Garden Park, they are amazed at what they are part of accomplishing. Small things really can change people’s lives.”

Because of his humility and dedication to leading and serving others, Hyde is Loyola’s nominee for the NCEA Proclaim Youth Virtues, Valor, and Vision Award, a national award that formally recognizes extraordinary young people in Catholic schools who through their selfless service, determination, innovation and ideals are changing the world.

When Senior English and Creative Writing teacher Cathy Sledge first stepped on campus, one of her goals for this year was to establish a literary magazine, one which created a platform for students to showcase their exceptional talents in art, photography, and literature. Students and teachers were optimistic - hopeful, but the first edition of LYRA far exceed everyone’s expectations.

“This year has been an incredible learning experience for the Novels& Creative Writing class students and for me in putting together a new literary arts magazine that we could all be proud of as Loyola Flyers,” says Sledge.

The three senior editors, Maria Harrington, Heaven McCallum, and Lawryn Scott, expressed a reticence when initially tackling this project, but “as the year progressed, and we got more involved in the process of making the magazine, we got more excited to share it with the school,” say the girls. “LYRA started as a nameless project with very little information to work with, but it grew into a work the entire staff is proud of and excited to showcase,” they continued. The staff, which included the editors as well as Catherine Marcalus, Kaylee Moody, Sydney McClellon, and Ainsley Betcher, were excited to see the talents of their fellow Flyers and were honored to be part of showcasing those talents for the faculty and students to see.

The magazine contains eighty pieces from various media. Readers can enjoy art, poetry, photography, memoirs, essays, fiction, and even award-winning speeches.

Sledge, took special care to acknowledge and thank Principal Johnny LeBlanc, who was

“supportive from the get-go,” says Sledge, and who helped her find the resources to fund the endeavor. She was also grateful for the help of art teacher Susan Brady for encouraging her students to get involved, Latin teacher Whitney Snead for her creative projects, and Director of Alumni Engagement Patrick Meehan and Advancement Director Melanie Johnson for fundraising suggestions and support.

Flyers Celebrate Wide Range of Athletic Success State Champions

GIRLS TENNIS

FOOTBALL

Our girls brought home the State Champion in Girls Tennis, the first girls team state title in school history.

Loyola Flyers were District Champions this year, securing a number two seed in the Division II playoffs. Earning their first home win against a Class 5A team, the Flyers ended their spectacular season with nine wins in the regular season for the first time in forty years.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Girls Basketball team finished their extraordinary season as state quarterfinalist, earning their twenty-second straight playoff berth. The Lady Flyers finished with a twenty-win season for seventeenth time in last twenty-one years

Individual State Champions Alden Wallace won an individual championship at state tournament. She is the first girls golf state champion in school history.

Luke Jackson won state championship in javelin.

AK Harvey and Mary Cecile Hancock won state championship in doubles.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Our Flyers made it to the state quarterfinals this season, with their second home playoff win in twelve years.

BOYS SOCCER

The Boys Soccer team had another noteworthy season as they finished as District Champions and reached the state quarterfinals.

SOFTBALL

Individual Medalists Reese Ebarb placed third in the 182-pound division for wrestling.

Five other wrestlers qualified to compete in the state meet.

Sam Russell finished second in the 500 meters at the state swim meet.

The Lady Flyers Softball Team finished their season as District Champions and reached the state tournament for first time in fourteen years.

BASEBALL

The Flyer Baseball Team finished strong this season as District Champions, setting a school record for wins in a season, with twenty-six.

They went on to earn a spot in the state quarterfinals.

Tiffani Nash and Paul Sin completed their season as Regional Singles Champions.

The Lady Flyers won the district championship this year and reached the state championship game for the third time in five years, bringing home the trophy for state runner-up.

State Semifinalists LACROSSE

Boys Lacrosse won the District Championship and reached state Final Four. The Flyers remained ranked in Top2 throughout the year.

Alumni Spotlight: Pat Harrington

Like many in the Loyola College Prep community, Pat Harrington has more than connection to the school. He is a graduate of the Jesuit Class of 1979 and was a member of the football team (state champions in 1976 and semifinalists in 1978). But the family legacy has continued as he and his wife Lisha have had three children graduate from Loyola. The most recent was Maria, who was in this year’s senior class. She follows Roxanne (’05) and Patrick (’09) as LCP grads. Plus, his mother was a teacher at St. Vincent’s Academy for more than two decades.

But Pat has also had another connection to Loyola – he has been the school’s official photographer for 20 years. Anytime you go to a Loyola event – from football games to graduation – you are likely to see him there taking

pictures. And it’s a family business – all the members of the family help make Harrington House, which is located just a block away from Loyola, one of the top photographic studios in the area.

“First and foremost is the bond you make with friends and family,” he says. “Loyola builds trust. The school represents moral values and Christianity that are so important.

One thing I always told my kids is that I hope you get your soul right. To have a school that confirms that I think is vital. You know how older people tell stories about when they were young? Usually they tell stories about their days in high school. That foundation you get from high school is what you hang on to for life.”

Alumni News Notes and Newsworthy Dr. John Kenney ‘92 received a prestigious Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) this past summer in Boston at the academy’s annual conference. Dr. Kenney, a dentist with Tupelo Smiles Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Tupelo, Miss. and is the only dentist in Mississippi this year to reach the Fellowship level.

Slattery Johnson ‘99 was recently appointed Director and Shareholder of his law firm, Blanchard Walker O’Quin and Roberts. Johnson has been named a “Rising Star” for the past two years in Louisiana Super Lawyers and in 2015 he was named of the ten best lawyers in the state in the area of personal injury law. In addition to Chair of the Shreveport Historic Preservation Commission, he is a past president of the Young Lawyers Section of the Shreveport bar Association, and serves as a member of the City of Shreveport’s Loan Review Committee. C. Kent Lowe ‘75 received the “25 Year Award” last summer in Dallas at the annual College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Convention for completing 25 years in the profession. Lowe is a Senior Associate Communications Director at LSU in Baton Rouge covering Men’s Basketball and Women’s golf.

Stephanie Sievers ‘98 recently appeared on the CNBC reality television show “The Partner”.

Sievers, the CEO of Shreveport-based ANECA Federal Credit Union, was also awarded the World Council Young Credit Union People (WYCUP) program scholarship in July, 2015 at the World Credit Union Conference (WCUC) in Denver, Colorado. That scholarship afforded her an all-expenses paid trip to the WCUC in Belfast, Northern Ireland last July, 2016. Sievers attended the WYCUP program where she presented on credit union leadership.

Michael Petrosh ’09 Completed a Masters in Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music Currently the assistant organist/ choirmaster at The Cathedral of St. Luke (Episcopal) in Orlando, Fla. Lauren Petrosh ’12 graduated Magna Cum Laude from Sewanee with degrees in chemistry and music and is currently enrolled in a Master of Arts in Teaching at Centenary.

Lauralee Davis ’14 has been selected for a summer internship as a research assistant with Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. She will be working with the Child Psychiatric Epidemiology Group studying how trauma impacts children. Specifically, the study focuses on children’s indirect exposure to the events of 9/11 through their parents who were first responders. Davis is a junior at Ole Miss majoring in psychology and minoring in Latin.

Matthew Flanagan‘14 is a member of the University of Notre Dame football marching band and plays the cymbals.

Flyer Alumni Association Recaps Fantastic Year

The Flyer Alumni Association was very active during the 2016-17 school year. Patrick Meehan ’99 came on board as the Director of Alumni Engagement in May of 2016 and on the 18 th of that month the final “Lunch with Loyola” was held at Cantina Laredo and drew a large crowd to close out the preceding school year. One month later the 26 th Annual Flyer Classic Golf Tournament, another successful event, was held at East Ridge Country Club.

Carie Cotter Hart ’99 was our featured speaker as part of our “Alumni Spotlight” series at “Lunch with Loyola” on Aug. 24, 2016 at Bistro Byronz, our first major event following the summer break. Hart is the co-founder and publisher of “Lola Magazine”, a local women’s publication.

A large cookout was held prior to the Flyers’ Homecoming game against St. Frederick in September. Close to 75 alums attended from St. John’s, Jesuit, SVA, and Loyola.

A combined tailgate party was held prior to the Loyola-St. Mary’s game on a unique Thursday night at Turpin Stadium on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. The NSU Alumni Association hosted the event and the cheerleaders from both schools posed for a friendly picture prior to the game.

The Snoopy Open Tennis Tournament was held at East Ridge on the final weekend of September. The 90th annual Alumni BBQ was held in St. Vincent’s Hall (Loyola cafeteria) on Oct. 8, and saw attendees mingle and eat a steak dinner and then dance the night away to the sounds of SideFX on a cool fall evening.

The annual “Hall of Honor” induction banquet and halftime ceremony was held Oct. 27-28 as three new members formally joined the distinguished club. Fr. Peter B. Mangum ’82, Pat Mitchell -78, and Ora Marie Templeton (honorary) were this past years’ inductees.

“After Hours” events were held around Thanksgiving and Christmas, giving alums a chance to see each other around the holidays, and then Stephanie Sievers ’98 started us off in 2017 as our featured speaker as part of our “Alumni Spotlight” series at “Lunch with Loyola” on Feb. 15 at Rotolo’s. The final “Lunch with Loyola” of this past school year was held in April at Cantina Laredo and in May the final “After Hours” was held at Wine Country. A big thank you to the alum and friends of Loyola who hosted every “Lunch with Loyola” and “After Hours” event in 2016-17!

The annual “Alumni Basketball Game” was held this past February in the Flyer Gym and was a thriller and helped raise money for the basketball program, and the annual “Old Timer’s Baseball Game” was held in April at Cicero Field prior to the Flyers’ game against St. Frederick.

The third-annual “Snoopy Shootout Sporting Clays Tournament” was held on March 18, 2017 at The Shreveport Gun Club. It was the largest attended and highest grossing (raised over $10,500) Snoopy Shootout to date with 75 shooters; two lead sponsors (Autobody

St. Vincent’s Alumnae Wrap up Another Eventful Year

Camille Meehan, Loyola Educator, Hall of Fame Inductee and SVA Alumna, provides an overview of the St. Vincent’s Alumnae Association’s recent Tag Day and upcoming events The St. Vincent’s Alumnae Association is going strong and fulfilling its mission to strengthen the bond of union among former students of St. Vincent’s Academy and their alma mater, to preserve the history and traditions of the school, and to support Catholic education in Shreveport. The association was organized on November 5, 1912 and has been active ever since, bringing together alumnae from across the decades who share a love of St. Vincent’s Academy, the Daughters of the Cross, and the legacy they left to all of us.

A highlight of the year was the annual luncheon held on Saturday, June 18 at the Petroleum Club. Over 100 alumnae gathered to share lunch, memories, and to hear our featured speaker, Dr. Karen M. Pendleton from the class of ’76. Her topic was “The Science of Maintaining a Youthful Life: Dr. Karen’s 7 Tips to Aging Beautifully”. Dr. Pendleton, who has extensive experience as a physician specializing in Lifestyle Medicine and Ophthalmology, was an engaging and well-received speaker.

Homecoming weekend at Loyola was another chance for SVA alumnae to get together at a fun tailgate event sponsored jointly by the St. Vincent’s Alumnae Association and the Loyola Alumni Association. A large number of graduates gathered before the game to enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs and reconnect with old friends.

One annual event that touches each facet of our mission statement is Tag Day, commemorating the annual fund raiser we participated in as students. Not only does it help preserve the history of our school, but it brings alumnae of many decades together for a fun evening and raises money to help defray costs of a Catholic school education at Loyola College Prep for children and grandchildren of our alumnae. This year’s event was held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at the Catholic Center and featured delicious food, a silent auction, and wonderful jazz music provided by the Craig/ Powers Duo. Alumni from St. John’s/ Jesuit/ Loyola were invited to join us this year and we hope to continue this tradition in the future with our friends from our “brother school”, so

that we can all work together to continue the outstanding tradition of Catholic education in our area. Scholarships, both need-based and merit-based, will be awarded for the school year 2017-18 to a number of deserving students.

Through Many Changes Over the Years, Loyola’s BuildingsRemain an Anchor in our Rich History

Loyola College Prep has undergone many significant changes in the last seven decades.

But throughout all the changes, there has been a constant -- the school buildings. Today, they remain largely unchanged from the same halls walked by the parents and grandparents of current students.

Though Loyola was founded in 1902 (as St. John’s College), the school hasn’t always been located on Jordan Street. Originally located on Texas Avenue, the school building was a three-story structure that had a few dozen students and priests.

But the success of the early days of the school brought about a need to move to a new location.

The Walter B. Jacobs Sr. estate on the 900 block of Jordan Street was purchased by the Jesuits for the location of the new church, residence, and high school in 1924. A drive was inaugurated for the purpose of raising an endowment fund, with the hope that the Jesuit Fathers could run the school free of tuition charges.

However, the goal was not realized, as running expenses proved to be greater than the revenue from the fund, though the priests were able to keep the costs low.

Still, the Depression ruined any immediate chances for expansion and in 1929, classes began in temporary buildings. It would be eight more years before the school would

have a permanent building. In 1938, the first half of the present high school building was completed. In retrospect, it’s an odd-looking structure with only half of today’s building being built. (There was nothing from the front steps east to what is now Cicero Drive.

In 1927, the preparatory level was transferred to the Sacred Heart Convent at the 438 Herndon St., remaining under the supervision of the Jesuit fathers.

It remained there until 1934, when it was transferred back to St. John’s.

On Sept. 12, 1938, the school held its first classes in the new – and permanent – building on Jordan Street, where is now stands today. “A grateful citizenry has remembered the pioneer efforts of years ago and they are working with us in realizing the dreams of St. John’s founders,” wrote the school catalogue.

“It is our hope that the next five years will bring to completion plans for a fully equipped high school, modern in every respect.”

But the best-laid plans were put on hold with the outbreak of World War II. During these years, the school’s enrollment reached an all-time high of 163. The new building had the capability of holding 175 students, but enrollment soon reached 200. The Jesuit fathers and Bishop Charles Greco decided to conduct a city-wide drive to obtain the necessary funds to enlarge the present building – as well as a new gym-

nasium. Nearly $270,000 in cash was realized and the expansion of the classroom building and the “ultra-modern” gymnasium was built (completed in 1951).

There have been landscaping changes, interior walls knocked down to accommodate bigger classrooms, window replacements, plus expansion to include new buildings. But through it all, the main school building and the Residence Building look the same as they did more than a half-century ago.

Preserve our rich history

Years of extreme weather have deteriorated the exterior brick and mortar of the 79-year-old buildings, leaving damage that now allows water to encroach into the classrooms and stairwells of Loyola.

Although recent extreme weather has exposed maintenance needs that have gone undiscovered until recently, it’s not too late to undo the damage and to ensure a safe and lasting environment for generations of Flyers.

Restore the glory of our beginnings

Our facilities are in need of repair that includes new roofing, replacement of damaged mortar and bricks, and waterproofing areas that have deteriorated.
