Contributors Monica Knoesen Born and raised in Barberton, Monica clearly remembers a youth dotted with the colourful contents of her mama’s make-up bag. Kickstarting her career in professional make-up in high school, she went on to specialise in airbrush make-up and has worked with celebrities, royalty and countless brides since her full-time career blossomed in 2003.

Philip and Laura-Ann Ovis of Kilmorna Manor Philip and Laura-Ann generously gave Lowveld Living the run of Kilmorna Manor, which is the opulent setting of our bridal fashion shoot. The house was designed by eccentric Irishman, Paddy Davis-Webb, who built a Tudor-style English manor high on the Schoemanskloof escarpment. The owners themselves were married in a wildly romantic elopement to Grenta Green after being introduced by the bride’s “formidable, divorce lawyer aunt.” “No-one but my aunt thought we’d make a good match,” says Laura-Ann, “me being a city girl of note and Philip being a bushbaby at heart, but we do.”

PW Kriek A refreshing personality in the Lowveld, PW is the hair stylist behind our bridal fashion shoot. He has been perfecting his talent for hair and make-up since high school. When he isn’t cutting, spraying and styling, he enjoys painting, black-andwhite photography, reading poetry and, in his own words, “being generally arty.”

Spring is wedding season in the Lowveld so we pulled out all the stops and devoted this issue entirely to matters of the heart and all things bridal.

mmense credit must go to the phenomenally talented Sven Musica, Lowveld Living’s photographer at large, whose genius behind the camera draws out the star quality in everyone he photographs (he even managed to get me to pose in a vintage MG for a new Ed’s pic). You can admire his work in the bridal fashion spread shot at Kilmorna Manor. Huge thanks goes to the owners, Philip and Laura-Ann Ovis, who generously gave our team free rein in the house - and who didn’t bat an eyelid when we announced at the last minute that we had a helicopter in the shoot and did they have somewhere for it to land, please? Now that was a day magazine memories are made of. Weeks of planning culminated in a trek up Schoemanskloof in a small convoy of vehicles all groaning under their loads. After a quick stop for the world’s best OJ at Joubert & Sons, we spilled out en masse at Kilmorna. It takes many people and lots of stuff to get pages this gorgeous: hair-stylist, make-up artist, model, people to hold things, people to carry things, enough provisions to keep all these people going all day, boxes and boxes of props, a small truckload of photographic equipment plus ten billowing wedding dresses. The resulting pictures make it worth every minute. My favourite article in this edition is Sven’s beautiful portrait series celebrating older couples (page 38). The premise of the piece is that, with its focus, quite appropriately, on the dewy bride and the frothy gown, a wedding is a ceremony followed by a party. It’s not a marriage. We asked five couples, with a combined 176 years of experience, to share their wisdom about life together long after the confetti is swept away. Their words are funny, insightful and heartening. In Lowveld Spaces we showcase four venues. In addition to their striking settings and interiors, the common factor is that they are all wonderful places to host a wedding, an anniversary or other celebration. Elsewhere in the magazine you’ll find good ideas, expert advice, and generous giveaways. It’s all neatly tied up at the end in our interview on the topic of love with motivational speaker Brett Shuttleworth. Making this edition was such fun that the LL team was almost sorry when it was over. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we absolutely loved creating it.

the essence of

Eska

Dullstroom has a way of wriggling into visitors’ hearts. It has something to do with the allure of picturesque scenery, sleepy village life and quaint shops. People arrive as tourists and return as residents, even if only part-time ones, which is what happened to artist jeweller, ceramic aficionado and mosaic fan, Eska Jansen van Vuuren

By Orpa Clausen

It didn’t surprise Eska’s family much when she enrolled for a three-year diploma in Jewellery Design and Manufacture at Tshwane University of Technology. As a self-confessed Barbie doll clothing fanatic as a youngster, her heart set on following in mom’s footsteps and becoming a fashion designer, she always knew that her future lay somewhere in the realm of design and Fine Arts. Fifteen years after graduating she is well on her way to establishing her name as an artist jeweller under her Eska Claire Designer Jewellery brand. Eska spends most of her time designing and making bespoke jewellery at her informal Pretoria-based studio, helped by her assistant, Christene Wagenaar. Her work is sold in her sleek shop in Dullstroom which also sells the paintings and ceramics of other artisits. A master of intricate designs and fine detailing, her talents aren’t confined to a particular style, but she does let on that her favourite type of work is in the wedding business. “When I think about it, there are two inseparable dimensions to jewellery design and manufacture that I find intriguing. The first is the evolutionary process of taking a bar of precious metal and transforming it into a piece of art. For me, there is also a more philosophical side to every jewellery piece, especially engagement rings and wedding bands. I enjoy spending time with my clients to discuss and understand their taste and personalities while designing the rings. It’s humbling to be a part of such a special memory in someone’s life and I always try to capture their emotions in my designs.”

12

LOWVELD LIVING | ISSUE 41

Her work draws inspiration from typically South African landscapes and cultures. Eska goes to some lengths to include elements that reflect her clients’ personalities. She follows global trends in both the fashion and jewellery sectors, which exlains her collection of international fashion and jewellery magazines. It’s little wonder that she has graced the pages of some of South Africa’s most prestigious publications and is heralded as one of the country’s leading jewellers. Although she’s made hundreds of items, from rings to earrings and everything in between, one piece in particular will always stand out in her mind. “In 2006 I was awarded second place in the national Plat Africa Jewellery Design & Manufacture Competition. The piece I designed and entered was dedicated to my grandmother, who passed away a couple of weeks after manufacturing was complete. It was a bracelet made from platinum and 18ct yellow gold with cognac, yellow and white diamonds, intricately pave set.” When she isn’t at work behind the bench restoring, re-inventing or manufacturing custom pieces, Eska loves spending time with her new baby daughter and having long relaxed lunches with her husband. “If time allows I enjoy painting, sewing and doing mosaic.”

THE DULLSTROOM CONNECTION

As charming as it is, you may wonder why Eska chose Dullstroom as the locale for her jewellery and ceramic shop. It’s rather a sweet story. When visiting the village some years previously, Eska and her then-fiancé André immediately fell head over heels with the place. When planning their big day, they couldn’t think of a better place to say their vows than this enchanting country venue. Despite being based in Pretoria, they head to Dullstroom as often as possible for weekend getaways, and re-live fond memories of their wedding, which includes the downpour they had to survive on the day. Info: Eska Claire, 083 609 1224 or eska@boardwalkmanor.co.za, Shop@67 Centre, Dullstroom. All jewellery shown on these pages are bespoke pieces made by Eska.

A hand written note on quality paper is a rare thing in the digital age, but a wedding is an opportunity to design beautiful stationery that makes a good first impression. Save-the-dates, invitations, menus, seating plans, place cards and personalized Thank You notes are a charming way to share the day and serve as keepsakes for guests. Liandri Fouche of Frei Design offers some guidelines on what to consider when designing wedding stationery.

GETTING STARTED

Determine your budget and be realistic about how much you can afford to spend. Speciality paper, letterpress, foiling, ribbon, lace and similar frills all add to the cost. Consult your designer about any special wedding stationery packages they may offer. Decide on a colour scheme and a theme for your wedding. Once that’s done, get creative and stamp your personal style on your special day. Incorporate something personal into your stationery, such as silhouettes, photos, a handwritten poem or letter. Start planning your stationery as soon as possible after you’ve chosen the theme for the wedding. Post Save-the-Dates well in advance (six months before the wedding). Formal invites should arrive at least two months in advance. Tradition dictates that Thank You notes should be in the post a fortnight after the wedding, but there’s a lot more leeway these days. Remember to state the dress code on your Bespoke stationery in classic tones of invite and triple check all the other details. pink, purple and silver are perennial favourites Always print a few extra invitations for weddings. Touches of lace combined with in case of spelling mistakes or other letterpress detail and illustrations are also very popular. printers gremlins. The rising trend is that orange is the new black. If the budget is tight, combine your Expect to see citrus shades as well as rich chocolate and menu, table number and a thank you purples. Birds and butterflies are evergreen themes notice on one design and put a few on and vintage in all its forms never goes out of style each table rather than one per place (to make it come alive try using some bright colours). setting. Monochrome tones are a winner and can be very striking.

INFORMATION ETIQUETTE

w

ho should be the first to know about the engagement? First things first: curb all social media impulses until you’ve told your nearest and dearest, preferably in person. Children from previous marriages should be told first, thereafter other close family members. Once that’s done, hit that Twitter feed, baby! If I know someone can’t come to the wedding, should I still send an invite? Invitations come with the expectation of a gift, so don’t send invites to those you know can’t attend. If close family or friends must miss the wedding, you can send an invitation with a note to say it’s meant merely as a keepsake. Can guests Tweet or upload photos during a wedding? Unless you have the couple’s permission, uploading photos before they’ve had a chance to view their own wedding pictures seems tacky to say the least. It also distracts you from being fully present in the moment. To avoid a massive social faux pas, leave social media at the door just this once.

Wedding dress workout Between organising the flowers, the cake, the music, the venue, the catering and everything else a bride-to-be’s day is filled with, you suddenly realise that if you don’t get on a treadmill in the next two hours, you’re in for a whole lot of trouble come D-Day. We asked White River-based personal trainer, Yolanda Lizmore, for her top tips on looking your best when you walk up the aisle.

Water, water, water - We’ve heard it a thousand times, but drinking water (not juice, not coffee, not wine) is essential to weight loss. Yolanda recommends at least two litres a day. Staying hydrated will give your skin a dewy glow, help with digestion and make you feel good. Toss the scale - That silver square in your bathroom is not to be trusted. One week, it’ll tell you the kilos are sliding off, the next that you’ve transformed into a hippo. Only your mirror will tell you the truth. Set realistic goals - There are no quick fixes when it comes to losing weight. Give yourself at least six months to get in shape and remember everyone has their moments of weakness, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you occasionally skip a gym session. Manage your expectations - Depending on your level of dedication, you can expect to shake off 1,5 to 2kg a month on a fairly stringent workout plan. You may lose more, you may lose less, but as long as your allegiance to the barbell is always foremost in your mind, one thing’s for certain: you will not fail. Be disciplined - Once you decide on a game plan, stick to it. Many people throw their hearts and souls into keeping fit and eating balanced meals in the beginning, but a few months down the line, they start to lose focus and end up putting on all the weight they lost. The moral is : be fiercely committed to your daily workout – if not for the rest of your life, at least until your big day! Eat what you love - Much like the water speech, chances are you’ve heard it before: what you eat determines 80 percent of your success. But, in Yolanda’s opinion, you should eat what makes you feel good. Don’t like fish? Don’t eat it! As long as you eat consciously and moderately, you shouldn’t have a problem shedding the kilos. A word on supplements - Brides, be warned. There are hundreds of supplements out there clamoring for your attention and your hard-earned Rands. Yolanda recommends extreme caution when considering any of them. Whey protein shakes or a tailored selection of vitamins are acceptable, but keep your guard up when it comes to products that promise miracles. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Want that dream body? Call Yolanda Lizmore, Fit 2 Go, 082 941 3480. Get in to the best shape of your life with our 12week fitness makeover that includes a Fit2Go gym membership plus Herbalife products to help the winner shed unwanted inches. Sleek, Svelte and Shapely THE HERBALIFE WAY

The watermelon diet, the cabbage soup diet, the bacon-and-egg diet ... we’ve seen and done it all. But after the initial, apparently miraculous, results the dial on the scale inevitably creeps back up. The only tried and true way to loose unwanted inches for good is the old-fashioned combo of a healthy eating plan and regular exercise. Here are some tips from Independent Herbalife Distributor, Michelle van der Westhuizen on how to lose them forever.

w

eight loss, eating a healthier diet, becoming more active, working towards a better body shape. Whatever your goal, there always seems to be a few habits that get in the way, even with the best intentions. Success means not only achieving your goal, but also maintaining it. Here are some common dieting habits to be careful of. You think you can lose weight without exercise To be healthy, lose weight and keep it off, you need to exercise regularly. Exercise helps you achieve a better body shape by toning the muscles; supports metabolism; helps increase energy levels, fitness and endurance, plus it’s good for the mind! You drink too many calories Staying clear of the fizzy drinks is great, but don’t replace it by drinking more fruit juice. Remember: juice can contain almost the same number of calories as fizzy drinks. Yes, juice has natural sugars, which is better than sucrose or artificial sweeteners, but always read the label, as often sugar is added, and there’s no fiber. Where possible, eat your fruit, rather than drink it. You think all fats are bad Beneficial fats are unsaturated fats, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are primarily found in oily fish, nuts and seeds. Fat is essential for health, just make sure you limit saturated fats and trans fats. A diet is a way of life, not a temporary thing Just because you’ve reached your target weight, or achieved your goal doesn’t mean you can stop your diet. Do celebrate

your success, but don’t fall back into old habits. So many people who lose weight end up putting it back on – don’t be one of these people. Nibbling and not knowing when to stop eating Eating small, regular meals throughout the day is fine, but make sure you keep them balanced and don’t lose track of how much you’ve eaten. It’s so easy to get caught up doing work or busy talking while you eat, and forget to stop when you’re no longer hungry. Losing motivation Motivation is a huge part of sticking to your eating or exercise plan. Get family and friends around you that build you up and encourage you. This is especially important when you notice results starting to plateau. Try putting post-it notes or inspirational photographs around the house and in the pantry to remind yourself of your goals and how far you’ve come so far. Remember, it’s easier to break habits, than it is to build them. So get family and friends to keep you motivated, stay focused and strong – the results will pay off. You may contact Michelle for a free wellness evaluation or to join the Mbombela Weight Loss Challenge. To date, the group has lost more than 3 tons of combined kilos.

Memories

ARE MADE OF THIS

When, after months of organising what may have been the most exhausting social event of their lives, the bride and groom escape into newly-wedded bliss and set off on their first holiday as Mr & Mrs, they want it to be special. Orpa Clausen came up with honeymoon ideas that will make lifelong memories

FULL STEAM AHEAD

THE VIEW

Oozing luxury, this Victorian style coach is the perfect ‘destination’ for newlyweds who are looking for a total city escape. There are no televisions or radios on board and should one make the fatal mistake of pulling out a cell phone or laptop in public, chances are there will be rather stern looks from the staff. This trip is all about taking the time to explore, absorb and appreciate the best in life with no distractions.

THE JOURNEY

Many moons ago, travelling by rail was one of the most popular modes of transport. Today, it is a token of a more romantic era. South Africa’s carriages have earned a less than stellar reputation over the past 20 years and you’d be forgiven for turning up your nose at the mention of a locomotive honeymoon. But Rovos Rail isn’t just any old train.

THE ROOMS

Whether you go budget or deluxe, the accommodation consisits of comfy, carpeted quarters, an opulently decorated bed and a classic black and white tiled bathroom. Don’t want to leave your room straight away? Easy – call room service and unwind with your partner in your own private haven.

30

LOWVELD LIVING | ISSUE 41

Gazing out of the window will become a facinating pastime, no matter which of the Rovos experiences you choose. When you feel like looking through a different window, grab your spouse’s hand, tuck a book under your arm and saunter down to the Observation Car at the end of the train.

Depending on your point of departure, there are numerous route options available. From a three-day trip to Vic Falls, to a luxurious 28-day adventure from Cape to Cairo plus a variety of choices in between. You won’t struggle to find a journey that suits your pocket, schedule and taste. !Remember to pack: Your camera, that stash of books you’ve been meaning to read for ages, a travel chess set, elegant evening wear to impress in the five star dining car, a roaring appetite and an adventurous spirit. For rates, dates and a full itinerary, contact Rovos Rail on 012 315 8242 or reservations@rovos.co.za

OF F THE BE A TE N TR A CK

While a honeymoon in Paris is as romantic as it gets, there are many exciting alternatives for couples who prefer the whiff of adventure

EXPLORE THE AMAZON

Your honeymoon can double as a bucket list experience if you opt to see the Amazon. Make it even more extraordinary by staying at the romantic Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge in Brazil. Encased by the exotic forest canopy, enjoy a cocktail out on your private deck while you take in the forest sounds. During the day, you can feed the river dolphins, explore the lake in a boat or try your luck at piranha fishing. If cabin fever kicks in, head over to Manaus to check out the city’s 117-yearold Amazon Theatre, (Teatro Amazonas) an opera house located in the heart of the rainforest. Built during the Belle Époque when fortunes were made in the rubber boom, it is home to an annual opera festival and the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra who perform regularly. www.anavilhanaslodge. com

SAMPLE THE ARGENTINIAN WINELANDS

Apart from indulging in South American wines and appreciating the scenery from the patio, Viñas de Cafayate in the Salta region is a great departure point for other (yip, you guessed it!) winerelated activities. Once a private home, Vinas de Cafayate is set around a central square, with the rooms running around the cool inner courtyard in typical Argentinian architectural style. Biking, trekking and horseback riding with Gaucho’s in attendance are all on the To Do list. Plan a stopover in Buenos Aires to taste the nightlife and try your tango dance moves. Viva las vegas

lowveldhorizons

Vegas is famous for three things: casinos, strip shows and priests who dress like Elvis. But don’t judge Sin City too harshly. Or too soon. It has definite wow factor. With a casino at every turn, entertainment galore, kitsch décor, flashing neon and a whole lot of bedazzle, Vegas is a playground for grown ups. And while it’s better known as a quickie wedding hotspot for quirky couples from all over the world, there’s no reason you can’t pack a few outrageous outfits, prep your liver and jet West after you’ve tied the knot

STAY

You won’t be short of choice when booking a stay in Vegas. Prepare to part with your money and brace yourself for OTT everything, delightfully tacky 70’s décor and endless gold trim. But that’s half the fun, isn’t it? The Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort Spa - No-one is saying you’re not a serious party animal, but you may find the frenetic pace of the city rather overwhelming. That’s where The Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort Spa comes in. Perfect for a spa treatment, a gondola ride, a yoga session or a lazy day by the pool, make this your space to enjoy a bit of quiet time with your partner. RATES: Up to R5400 per room per day DINING: Japanese and Asian-Fusion cuisine. www.westinlakelasvegas.com Aria Sky Suites - They don’t call them sky suites for nothing. With floor-toceiling windows, you’ll be serenaded by a firmament of lights from sunset to sunrise, and that’s not even counting the stars. The great thing about this hotel is that it towers right above The Strip, the centre of all the non-stop Vegas action. RATES: Up to R3500 per room per night DINING: Gourmet on the go, haute cuisine and more. www.bellagio.com

PLAY

The Strip is one of Vegas’ main attractions. This is where all the action goes down. Marvel at the architecture, try your gambler’s luck in one of the many casinos, shop up a storm in designer shops, watch a show or simply take a stroll down one of the world’s most legendary streets. Fremont Street is another must-see. Known to many as the vintage Vegas, you’ll have the chance to glimpse the old-fashioned entertainment centre. Full of free shows, casinos and even a band or two.

HIKE

Believe it or not, Las Vegas isn’t the only Nevada attraction. It’s surrounded by a culture-rich, beautifully barren landscape that’s well worth exploring. Gold Strike Canyon Hot Springs – A walk in the region can last four to five hours, with stops to refresh yourself with dips in the many hot springs along the way. Red Rock Canyon - Only a short distance from the city, you’ll be remiss for not checking out this vast locale. Packed with activities, including biking, hiking, wildlife viewing and historical exploration.

WATCH

Cirque du Soleil, Bellagio, Las Vegas ‘O’ (as in ‘eau’) is a water-themed stage production involving 85 acrobats and a 1,5 million gallon pool. The show has been running at the Bellagio Hotel since 1998 and is described as “an aquatic tapestry of artistry, surrealism and theatrical romance” that makes audiences go weak at the knees. It’s on twice a night, has grossed over a billion dollars since opening and its popularity shows no sign of abating. You can also do a daytime backstage tour and catch performers in rehersal. Secure your tickets well in advance or you may come home disappointed. www.cirquedusoleil.com

VISIT

The Mob Museum - Fans of The Godfather can go behind the scenes for a guided tour of Vegas’ chequered past and hear both sides of the story at the the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, housed in the former Las Vegas Post Office and Courthouse. Creative direction for the idea came from Dennis Barrie, the man behind the International Spy Museum and the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame. Fascinating and engaging – a definite must-see. www.themobmuseum.org

etting married is probably one of the most exciting and important events in one’s life. However before taking the plunge, it is important that the happy couple ensure that they have their legal affairs in order with specific reference to the marital regime they will be entering into. Herewith a quick synopsis of the three forms of marital regimes; marriage in community of property, out of community of property excluding the accrual system and out of community of property including the accrual system. 1. Marriage in Community of Property This marriage is created in the absence of any contract. The marriage creates a joint community of property and of profit and loss. Hence, generally all assets and liabilities attaching to each spouse prior to the marriage becomes part of a common estate belonging to both parties. There are certain assets that may not form part of the joint estate such as an inheritance by one spouse from a third party where it is specifically stated that the inheritance does not form part of the joint estate. Both parties enjoy an equal status in the administration, control and possession of the joint estate and consequently can acquire debts and assets for and on behalf of the joint estate. Since the marriage creates a joint estate, on divorce each party will be entitled to half of the joint estate. On death, the surviving spouse is entitled to a half share of the estate and thereafter the remaining half share of the deceased spouse will be distributed either in terms of a will or intestate succession. With regard to creditors of the parties, the creditors, if successful against any one or both parties, may attach and sell any property in the joint estate to satisfy the debt owing to them. Also, if any

creditor applies for the sequestration of one of the parties, the joint estate will be sequestrated. Therefore there is a clear risk associated with any business venture as its success has a direct effect on the joint estate. 2. Marriage out of Community of Property without the Accrual System This marital regime is created by signing an Antenuptial Contract prior to the solemnisation of the marriage. The Antenuptial Contract is signed before a Notary Public and is registered with the Registrar of Deeds. The contract basically excludes the formation of a joint estate and any joint profit and loss. It may also cater for dealing with gifts in consideration of marriage. Therefore, each spouse retains any asset or debt, which he/she incurred prior to and during the marriage. They are not liable for the others debts except for debts incurred with regard to household necessities. On divorce, each spouse is entitled to their specific estate. On death the surviving party’s estate is not affected in any administrative way and the deceased party’s estate is distributed by intestate succession or in terms of a will. With regard to third parties the debts incurred by one party does not generally affect the estate of the other, as creditors have no claim to the other spouses assets. Should one spouse be sequestrated however, the estate of the other will still vest in the trustee and is only released under certain circumstances, such as if the property was catered for by the contract in consideration of marriage. 3. Marriage out of Community of Property with the Accrual System The consequences of this marital regime are the same as the aforesaid marriage out of community of property, but for the accrual. The accrual applies to all marriages out of community of property unless specifically excluded. On signing the Antenuptial Contract each party’s estate is ascribed a value and upon death or divorce the increases in each estate are added and then shared equally. tRULY MADLY DEEPLY There’s more to a successful marriage than having a beautiful wedding. Every partnership is unique but there’s no greater satisfaction for two people in love than to devote themselves to one another with a view to spending the rest of their lives together. Five prominent Lowveld couples who have done just that spoke candidly to Orpa Clausen about friendship, fights, respect, trust, space ... and love that has stood the test of time. budding farm, many African adventures, four children and 11 grandchildren later, Hazyview duo Biddy and Pat Wood have earned more than a few bragging rights in their 45-year union. T their secret to happiness? Inseparability, hard work, the odd screaming match and many happy hours together travelling, cycling, trout fishing and relaxing on the beach in Mozambique. “We’re good friends – and we’ve been good friends for a very long time. It’s not an easy road and if anybody tells you they’ve never had a fight in their marriage, they’re a liar. We shout and scream a lot, but we believe that you must talk it out – if you have an issue, get it out in the open. You have to be able to give and take and never be afraid to say you’re sorry. Divorce is such an easy thing. It’s a copout. If you make a vow, then you should stick to it … unless your partner becomes a real shitter!”

ith a love of good food, wine and entertaining, this couple has been going strong since they met in London in 1970. It wasn’t long before Mike had to return to South Africa, but he had already decided on the woman he was going to marry. And so, in the days before cellphones or Skype calls, he wrote Tina a letter asking her to marry him. And she did. “We share and do everything together. It’s a give and take and we believe that together you can conquer all. We seem to have always had similar outlooks and interests. Yes, it’s important for couples to keep their own identities, but it can be very dangerous when they veer off on their own paths. Eventually, that drives a bit of a wedge between two people because it leaves you without anything in common. We’ve just always done everything together because we don’t see the point in meeting someone, falling in love, marrying them and then going to play golf all day!”

at likes to joke that he imported Eileen from Scotland. She’s a self-confessed “airy-fairy, busy, rush-about” kind of girl and Pat is a steady rock. This is the second time around for both of them. They met while Elieen was holidaying in South Africa some 24 years ago. She decided to take the plunge, give up her life overseas and tie the knot with her “man in uniform”. They have never looked back. “Couples must be very forgiving because everyone makes little mistakes in their lives. Don’t focus too much on the problems and if it bothers you, talk it through today. Remember that the things that matter today don’t necessarily matter in two days’ time. We’re non-confrontational and things have a way of working themselves out. The other big thing is honesty. If you’re not honest, well, you’ll get found out! Everything should also be about yin and yang and getting the balance right – and we think we’ve managed that.”

Hans & Jeanette van der Merwe

m

utual sparks began to fly soon after the then 17-year-old Jeanette met Hans at a party in Cape Town. By 1959, those sparks were brighter than ever as they prepared for their outdoor wedding on Klein Constantia, a family farm. It turned out to be a blustery day on the weather front, which caused the festivities to move to the wine cellar, but the wedding was no less beautiful as result. 54 years down the line and their marriage stands strong. “Marriage takes patience. And communication. Today it seems like there’s no talking and that people don’t make an effort – they just give everything up and go. There must be more divorces in this country than any other. Our parents didn’t influence our relationship, but almost everyone who has married in our family is still married today. The spark of romance fades, but then you become more like dear friends … there to support and encourage each other. In sickness and in health.”

Granted, an unusual combination, b but that didn’t throw this quirky couple for a second. In fact, their differences may well be the magic that has kept them going for the last 33 years. “The media hypes relationships into a romantic thing and people go into marriage with completely the wrong idea. Romance counts, but in the end, it’s a partnership. And a huge commitment. Certainly not all that rubbish they show you in movies. There must be a little sense of privacy and territory and trust. Try not to say hurtful things or slant one another’s character. You feel like it sometimes, but words can actually be so destructive. Oh, and if you don’t go into marriage with a sense of humour, you can forget it!”

Bridal Bliss

Kavinga Guest House and wedding venue on the Brondal Road near Nelspruit has always been a gorgeous site to host nuptials. ONE-STOP PARTY SHOP

When last did you venture into Lowveld Packaging in Nelspruit? New owners Sara Bourhill, her partner Roland Turvey and his brother George have transformed the industrial-sized store to include more retail variety. From a wedding bash to a dainty dinner, Lowveld Packaging has a surprising array of products to complement an event. Think interesting-looking and ecofriendly biodegradable packaging (perfect for a summer picnic wedding), fabulous kids’ party packs complete with bulk lollies and sweets, and baking cheats such as ready-made fondant icing and delish mixes for do-it-yourself cakes. DUMP THE CAKE

It’s perfectly acceptable to leave out the traditional cake at your wedding reception in favour of something different and on-trend. A candy buffet or a vintage ice-cream van with tinkly music and luxury soft serves are fun ways to encourage your guests to mingle during dessert and can work beautifully with the overall look of your wedding. Just remember that the cutting of the cake traditionally signals that guests are free to leave the reception without being thought rude … so remember to announce that you’ve canned the cake. We love the dessert cart idea from www.chicsugar.co.za.

SILVER SERVICE AND CHAMPERS

Trend

The global trend is to return to a bygone era of sophistication and tradition. ALERT Queuing for the buffet makes way for plated main courses on gold-rimmed crockery, champagne in crystal flutes and family heirloom antique silverware. But this doesn’t mean you have to take out a second bond to pay for French champagne. South African’s have known for ages that SA’s Methode Cap Classique sparkling wines are top-drawer bubblies that give the best imports a run for their money. Even the White House has cottoned on and Graham Beck’s version was served at the Obama inauguration.

SWEET SENSATION

Opulent wedding dessert bars are here to stay, but following in fashion’s footsteps a modern twist for 2013 is to colour block the sweet course and serve up a visually pleasing spread that’s easy on the taste buds. It’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets Donna Karan. Use colours that correspond with your wedding scheme. So, if buttercup yellow is on the cards, think custard and lemon-based desserts like brûlées, or citrus curds with a hint of white in the form of meringues, coconut and cream.

SEAL OF APPROVAL

Make sure your wedding table toots are Fair Trade accredited, which is easy now that WIETA (the Agricultural Ethical Trade Initiative of South Africa) - a non-profit voluntary organisation promoting ethical trade in the wine industry - has established an identifying seal to be placed on products that are certified to have Fair Trade labour practices. Look out for it on either the front or back labels, or on the neck of the bottle. Try Place in the Sun, which uses trade rather than aid to enhance the lives of wine-farm workers. Info: www.wieta.org.za for more on the seal.

HEAVENLY WINES

A tiny boutique vineyard in Hemel-en-Aarde near Walker Bay, Hermanus, is a tale of how an idealistic Swiss winemaker, Jean-Claude Martin and his wife, Carolyn (née Finlayson, of winemaker fame), tamed the wilderness to establish their farm. They were the first in the region to grow and produce a Bordeauxstyle blend, the first to have a Grenache vineyard and the first to bottle a single-variety Voignier wine. A little over a decade later, Creation boasts a portfolio of ten award-winning wines one of which is the Creation Voignier, the perfect accompaniment for any wedding feast.

veryone has an aunt, grandmother or family friend whose front door can only be located via a sophisticated GPS system because their massively overgrown garden - which they’ve nurtured with tender loving care for the last 35 years - now threatens to swallow the house. After a wonderful Sunday lunch with them, you inevitably leave laden with parting gifts of cuttings, seedlings and a car boot full of Bromeliads. A garden like this can prove to be your salvation when you’re in the self-inflicted predicament of ‘organising the flowers’ for a wedding. As the said flower organizer, your first shock arrives at the same time as the quote from the florist. (Really? That many zeros?) The final tally for wedding flowers can make your blood run cold. and offer to give her a hand to tidy up her garden jungle. With a bit of creative thinking you can source table centrepieces, the bride’s bouquet, buttonholes for the wedding party and party favours for guests to take home – just by using everyday plants, beautiful indigenous grasses and even some pretty weeds. The Bromeliad family of plants can do wonders for a grand display and they are so versatile and forgiving. You can take one out of the ground and abandon it on the garage floor and it will still smile happily at you when you get around to dealing with it a week later. You don’t have to put them in water and they can be cut and forced into any position without worry. Bromeliads come in many colors and sizes. With their amazing structure and form, these plants will introduce life into any dull space

in an instant, giving a tropical look to the arrangement. Bromeliad’s do very well in the Lowveld and are easy to remove from one site and reposition elsewhere. If you head just out of town, our semi-rural roads are hedged with waving grass seed heads. If you catch them in time, you can give these beautiful plants one last encore in an arrangement or incorporate them into a wedding bouquet before the slashers and veld fires massacre them. Grasses come in many colors, exquisite shapes and textures and are easy to use. They don’t require watering and will maintain their look in a table arrangement, even in hot summer sun. With their soft textures and neutral color range they provide the perfect foil for orchids and proteas, which are so strong in shape and color. Succulents such as desert roses (echeveria) or small aloes

can be used to striking effect in arrangements, either on their own or mixed with softer foliage and flowers. They make charming - and lasting - wedding favours when potted and personalized to suit your wedding theme. They are available in a wide range of colors and are an excellent way to add interesting shapes to arrangements. Your flowers don’t all have to come from exotic places or hothouses. You can have amazing creations on your tables by using your garden plants and interesting foliage from your local surroundings. I suggest you stroll around your own garden or that of a friend, pick a few posies of flowers and foliage and play with different ideas and combinations. Its fun and you’ll be surprised by the lovely arrangements you can come up with.

nyone who has had the pleasure of spending a weekend here would tell you that when it comes to finding the perfect spot for a fairytale white wedding complete with a magical forest and a funky, vintage, ZA-style reception, you don’t have to look much further than Florence Farm. The architecture offsets chunky sandstone slabs with whitewashed corrugated iron that epitomises an old family farm in the platteland. Although the property started out primarily as a livestock and organic crop farm, it didn’t take long for owners Ané and Nico Steinberg to cotton-on to the idea of creating a cluster of self-catering cottages. It was only years later, following the news of their eldest daughter’s engagement, that they began converting the old milk shed into a venue for her big day. Since its grand opening in February 2012, the farm has become one of the most sought after venues in the province, whether for weddings or other celebrations. This is in part due to the delightful setting and décor, but also because it is professionally equipped to accommodate large functions.

Taking advantage of the former milk shed’s high ceilings and simple structure, Ané set to work on renovating a space that commands attention. The modern countrycum-minimalist décor is redolent of a nostalgic yet contemporary South Africa. Earthy tones and textures are used not only in the natural materials, but also in the soft furnishings. The result is a comfortable and homely space that conveys a sense of simple opulence. On the subject of photos, wedding photographers will be delighted with the location. There’s an endless bounty of natural backgrounds to work with, not least a forest canopy, a dam, a lake and an old car to pose in. One of the risks of holding an outdoor country wedding is the possibility of inclement weather that can ruin a lot more than just the bride’s makeup. One of the great advantages of Florence Farm is the wide variety of options for indoor shots.

Amo ng the Star s

To sleep out under the African sky is an experience that many of us have enjoyed, but it’s rare to do so while deep in one of the Earth’s few remaining wilderness areas surrounded by animals that may very much like to eat you. The treehouses in the Lion Sands Game Reserve make it possible to do so in safety and ultimate style

n

early a century ago an Irish American named Guy Chalkley followed the gold rush to South Africa. He was a keen hunter and explored the continent extensively, which led to his purchase of a property bordering the Kruger National Park. He built a small camp on the banks of the Sabie River that wends its way through the area. There were no roads. Visitors had to follow markings on trees to find their way to the site. For more than 60 years this was a remote, private retreat for the Chalkley and More families. It was the start of what is now the Lion Sands Game Reserve. The family-owned reserve is today the site of five lodges, all of which are imbued with Guy Chalkley’s legacy, that is, a profound sensitivity to the history and natural heritage of the place. The treehouse concept is a reflection of the family’s love of the bush – the closer to it, the better – and their wish to share it with visitors who feel the same way. On a logistical note, when guests book a treehouse stay, they check in as normal at the relevant lodge. Prior to sundown, a ranger drives them to their treehouse room where they can enjoy sundowners and where dinner is laid on. The ranger departs and the guests remain in the treehouse for the night, safely ensconced out of harm’s way, but wonderfully close to the wild. The ranger re-appears the following morning to drive guests back to the lodge where they can take part in the normal activities such as game drives and, need it be said, no luxury is overlooked. The photos speak for themselves.

CHALKLEY TREEHOUSE

Guy Chalkley once set up camp in a centuries-old Leadwood tree to escape predators. His descendants thought it would be the ideal place to build the ultimate bush bedroom and hence, the Chalkley Treehouse. Set on a secure platform, the room provides all the comforts you would expect at a five star safari lodge. Guests are taken to the site at sunset, where drinks and dinner await them. The hours of African dusk can be enjoyed absorbing the vastness of the bushveld as it transforms from day to night, before turning in for a night beneath the incredible night sky.

Dance

till the cows come home

i

n the beginning it was all about the cows. Nguni cows, to be exact. Grenville Wilson bought a farm at the end of 1997. He and his wife Zaskia had previously acquired land to raise these beautiful indigenous cattle, distinguished by their large curved horns and uniquely varied markings. A few years later, the neighbouring property came onto the market when the owner, a local farmer fondly known as Oom Ben Taljaard, decided it was time he retired. By then the Wilson’s Nguni experiment had expanded and they were in need of extra grazing. Shortly after buying the new farm, Zaskia suggested turning the old “melkstal” into a guesthouse. She set about the renovation with the aid of the farm manager Paul Fallone. From there the Wilson’s slid, inch by inch, into opening a fully-fledged hospitality venue without having quite intended to do so.

Around that time, Zaskia took a photograph of the original old shed and had it blown up to use as a mural in her Kyalami flower and gift shop, Pollination. A customer took one look and decided this was where she wanted to have her wedding. Once again, Paul and Zaskia found themselves renovating. This time it was the old farmhouse, which was needed to provide more accommodation for what was to be the establishment’s first wedding. It fell to Paul to confront the monumental task of clearing out a shed full of Oom Ben’s 60-odd years’ worth of accumulated ‘useful things’ – that is, all the bits and pieces a farmer can’t bear to throw away. Many, many truck loads of threadbare tyres, used tractor oil, rolls of rusty wire and other debris later, the cleared space was hosed down to

66

LOWVELD LIVING | ISSUE 41

banish decades of spider webs and dust. A concrete floor was thrown. A few extra doors were installed. Some wire chandeliers were strung up and, viola!, the old shed had a new lease on life. Within days of waving goodbye to their first party of wedding guests in the late 90’s, the news got out and spread fast. Couples planning their nuptials made a beeline for the farm and the popularity of The Cow Shed snowballed as a wedding venue of choice for city folk. Instead of being a low-key spot for weekenders to kick back within easy striking distance of Pretoria and Johannesburg, the owners accepted that the farm was destined to be a wedding venue. They accepted the challenge and took it from charming to exceptionally charming. They’ve since added further bedrooms to accommodate more guests in a unit called The Boarding House as well as a tented Bridal Suite on a deck overlooking a farm dam. The style of the many weddings held at The Cow Shed are not dictated by its countrified surroundings. The Old Barn lends itself to being transformed into almost any look. Past themes have ranged from Shabby Chic to Simply Elegant; Farm-style Fête to Out of Africa Colonial Splendour. One of the great advantages of the setting is that there are no nextdoor neighbours, no parking hassles, no noise restrictions and no need to worry about guests weaving their way home after a toast or three too many. Guests take over the farm from Friday until Sunday, allowing family and friends who have travelled from all over the country and the world a chance to spend quality time together.

The shift was gradual and unplanned but in hindsight probably inevitable. When a Johannesburg couple started renovating the run-down buildings on a sleepy farm in the hills near Lydenburg, their project gradually went from being a practical agricultural purchase to a booked-out wedding venue

THE WEDDING MAY DOMINATE PROCEEDINGS, BUT THERE ARE PLENTY OF SIGHTSEEING AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES TO FILL A WEEKEND

- Enjoy miles of easy walks on the farm, or try more strenuous hikes in the area - Fishermen have their choice of several dams stocked with bass and trout - The farm is home to at least 275 species of birds and free ranging eland, blesbok and black wildebeest - History buffs can take informative guided tours of the nearby archeological sites dating as far back as the Iron Age Info: www.thecowshed.co.za. 082 453 5998, 072 243 2429. The farming enterprise has grown alongside the wedding venue. The farm now runs a commercial Bonsmara herd, a herd of registered Nguni’s and a small herd of registered Indu Brazil Brahman cattle. The most recent addition is a fledgling thoroughbred horse stud.

lean lines perfectly balanced with retro touches. Modern decor and neutral colouring. Elegantly placed furniture displaying a mix of contemporary and earthy room accessories. With all this plus disco lights at the ready, what’s not to love? For the modern couple, 115@Casambo is an easy choice for a fuss-free, stylish getaway or a wedding venue. Although initially created a year ago with conferences in mind, the owners are happy that engaged couples have discovered Casambo Lodge, which is a short drive from the Nelspruit CBD, and are using it as a venue. Its success lies in its refeshingly minimalism and the smartly landscaped gardens. With the bushveld as a backdrop, the gardens are visually striking. Tall palms, colourful blossoms, lavish lawns and natural rock dominate the terrain, while ponds introduce a sense of tranquillity. The outdoor areas can be accessed from the lodge’s large wooden deck, which is designed so that it can be tented when additional party space is called for. The effect is a balmy, contemporary space with

a refreshingly urban feel, yet with all the pleasures of the countryside. Shifting focus to the interior, it’s clear that careful thought has been given to creating a multicultural brand with a touch of African brilliance. Furnishing are modern and sleek, many of them by leading South African designers. Deceivingly small at first glance, this venue is far bigger than it appears and has a feeling of a style that is at once diverse and analogous. With the tented outdoor decks, a spacious indoor entertainment area dotted with comfortable seating, stateof-the-art lighting system that can magically change the colour of the room at the flick of a switch and a laid back cigar lounge as a refuge when the party gets too busy, event planning becomes a cinch. Simply pick your flowers, tablecloths and cutlery, and you’re A-for-Away.

The land was originally purchased as a farm dotted with various buildings. It didn’t take long for the owner Carol Sanderson, a former investigative journalist, to see that she was sitting on a potential goldmine in terms of realized dreams. She’d always had a yen to set up a place for Lowvelders to enjoy anything from jazz concerts to fashion shows. Calling in an architect from Cape Town to bring her mod dÊcor vision to life, she decided to take things a step further to include accommodation units on the property. What neither she nor her husband, local businessman Lloyd Sambo, expected was that Casambo would be such an immediate and resounding hit.

A Take

on Cake A wedding cake is so much more than a delicious way to round off a bridal feast. It reflects the theme of the wedding, speaks volumes about the bride’s personal style, provides a lovely photo-op moment for the photographer and is drenched in symbolism. No wonder, then, that The Cake ranks almost as highly as The Dress on a wedding plan. Here are some simple guidelines to have your cake and eat it. Ask Around - Search online and in magazines for reputable bakers. Ask newly married couples for recommendations and create a shortlist. Then meet the bakers, see their portfolios and ask for a tasting - remember to taste the icing! More Haste Less Speed - As with all the wedding arrangements, don’t leave the cake to the last minute. Do your research and make a decision as early as possible. Please Yourself - The age of the white, three-tiered wedding cake went out with strict formal weddings. Casual or chic, highly personalised weddings have taken over. Design a cake

- or other idea - that will reflect your own taste and the style of the wedding itself. Too Many Cooks - Avoid the mistake of letting too many loving friends and relatives have a say in the design and making of your wedding cake or there is bound to be unhappiness. The bottom line is: your party, your cake. Start Here - Begin your research with good advice, examples and recipes from Martha Stewart, the original domestic goddess and arbiter of wedding style. The recent Brightside Comm-un!-tea for CANSA saw the Lowveld’s finest roll up in a drove of feathers, pearls and all-over fabulousness for the most anticipated charity event of the season. This year, it was all about being vivaciously vintage. Hostesses and their guests dressed to impress the judges with their interpretations and, once the judging was over, settled down to a spot of champers and bite-sized delicacies for brekkie. Speaker Brett Shuttelworth made sure the ladies were kept entertained throughout the event and stirred up peals of laughter that rang throughout the city. Lowveld Living was Lady of the Province, Patience Mabuza there to capture the event and enjoy the day.

Love IS THE ULTIMATE SUCCESS

Brett Shuttleworth was a farm kid who went on to become what he calls a “motivational entertainer and trainer” with clients all over the world. After a multi-faceted career that included professional sport, modelling, business and a Hollywood movie role, Brett now dedicates himself to teaching people how to achieve their highest potential. Lowveld Living caught up with him when he was Guest Speaker at the 2013 CANSA Tea, Mumalanga’s premier charity fundraising event attended by hundreds of Lowveld ladies. His message is so powerful that we decided to give him the final say on matters of the heart in our bridal edition. Q: What led you to enter the world of motivational speaking and why? A: The more I achieved, the more I found myself wanting to help people. I suppose in a way it was a reflection of wanting to help myself because I still was not happy. I asked myself some hard questions and discovered that my ego identity was driving my journey and goals and not truly making my soul smile. I also discovered that it was the same for millions of people around the world, not only me. I realised that everyone faces the same challenges, regardless of their worldly status, just in different forms and areas. This drove me even more, and validated my newfound urge to assist myself and other people in finding out what truly made their souls smile.

Q: What would you say has been your biggest success in this work? A: Finding my true passion in life after many trials and tribulations was, and is, priceless. Now, it’s teaching love in challenging environments such as the corporate world. It’s simply extraordinary to see companies wake up and realign their business decisions so that they’re based on love. Who would ever have thought that love would become the new currency? Sharing my discovery that love is the ultimate success is my biggest gift and success to date. Q: You’ve made a career of motivating other people to go after their highest potential - can you tell us what motivates Brett Shuttleworth? A: Sharing love. Ultimately I believe our biggest inspiration is in ourselves and in the unknown.

What makes your soul smile?

Q: What do you think romantic love is and do you think it really lasts a lifetime? A: Love is a state of being, not an emotion. If you can’t learn to love your true self, how will you ever be able to love someone else? The best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other. I do believe in fairytale marriages lasting forever, though. What a gift that is … Q: What relationship advice would you give to a couple planning to spend their lives together? A: First, don’t rush it! Second, as a couple, be aware that you don’t need to have the best of everything to be happy. Instead, make the best of everything you have and you will be happy.

Get Brett’s motivational talk on DVD and learn how to start living your best life. We have two DVD’s to give away. Submit your entries via email to info@ lowveldlivingmagazine.com or Like us on Facebook to be in the running: www.facebook.com/LowveldLiving.
