A Rich History

Established in 1845, Furness Brick are an independent family run brick manufacturer specialising in the production of traditional, coal-fired, pressed smooth, and clamp texture bricks.

Following a long history of brick making in this location we continue to produce bricks of exceptional charm and character, seldom found these days.

Just south of the Lake District, four generations of the Collinge family have dedicated their lives to the art of brick making.

We blend modern technology with time honoured techniques, in tribute to the tradition of brick manufacturing. Our kiln remains operational today, having fired bricks continuously for 80 years.

A Family Legacy

The Collinge family's legacy commenced in 1905 with William G Collinge (b. 1872) , who led the company until 1949. His son, William G Collinge Jnr (b. 1908), joined in the early 1930s. Following his service in World War II, William Jnr was instrumental in the kiln's renovation and rebuild during 1945-1946.

The subsequent generation saw the births of William R Collinge (Roger), John E Collinge, and Richard G Collinge between 1941 and 1950. Roger Collinge managed the company from 1975 to 1990, succeeded by Richard Collinge until his passing in 2015. These brothers were pivotal in modernising Furness Brick, introducing advancements such as forklifts and stiff plastic brick production, while upholding the company's traditional brick-making heritage.

Building a Future

The present generation, Nicholas R Collinge, Mark P Collinge, and James A Collinge, born between 1974 and 1983, represent the current board of directors, with James A Collinge running the company from 2015 to the present day as managing director, with support from his brothers, Nick and Mark. Their tenure has brought significant improvements, including:

Renovation of buildings and electrical systems to improve operational efficiency.

Achieving the lowest raw material consumption per brick produced in the company's history, reflecting a commitment to resource optimisation.

Establishment of a stewardship program for their 'ancient woodland' recognised by Natural England and the Forestry Commission.

Cumulatively, the Collinge family has contributed 294 years of experience in brick production, brick matching, sales, and all other facets of the brick industry since 1905.

A Legacy of Dedicated Employees

Beyond the Collinge family, Furness Brick's success is also a testament to the generations of families from the surrounding communities who have contributed their expertise. Many current employees are the descendants of individuals who worked for the company over the past 60 to 70 years, further enriching Furness Brick's collective knowledge and industry acumen.

Support Wildlife with Bee Bricks and Bat Boxes

What is a Bee Brick?

A bee brick is a brick with small holes that mimic natural nesting sites for solitary bees. Unlike honeybees, solitary bees nest alone and need safe cavities like hollow stems or wood. Adding bee bricks to gardens, outdoor spaces, or buildings helps support pollination and local biodiversity.

Why Use a Bat Brick?

Bat bricks create safe, predator-free roosts for bats to hibernate or rest. Built directly into your wall, they are subtle and blend seamlessly with the structure. Standard bat bricks are sized to fit four brick courses with a 10mm mortar joint.

We offer our Furness 'Bee' Brick and also our Furness 'Bat Box' in all standard and custom sizes, and in our entire range of bricks to blend naturally with your project.
