LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

S

ummer is just downright magical. As an adult though, we sometimes forget all the magic that the summer holds. We get over run with the daily pressures of life. It gets hard to sit back and enjoy the lightning bugs.

THE LOVE LABORERS Big thank you to our contributors!

FOUNDER & EDITORIAL DIRECTOR Kana Brown

Summer is made for fun in the sun and summer lovin’. I have had so much fun making this issue -- from eating too much ice cream, running around on the river, scoping out some hotties and spending time getting to know what you all like to do for the summer. I want you all to take a moment and think back to what your favorite thing about summer was when you didn’t have anything else to do, but enjoy it. Absorb that feeling & recreate that! Take a spontaneous road trip with girlfriends. Go ahead and have that summer romance that you know won’t necessarily last, but is nonetheless filled with wild infatuation. Take time to sit out in nature and appreciate it in all its glory. Cookouts, weddings and the good ol family reunions, do it all! As we all get older, I hope we never lose our love for the magic that is SUMMER!! Go forth and Take Back The Summer!!

A Positive Perspective

dream it!

Sarah Smith

Most people don’t know what they want to be until they’re in college. I’ve known that I wanted to be a performer since I could walk. Preparing for a career as a performer involves countless voice and acting lessons, memorizing monologues, and auditioning for roles - all this in hopes of making it on stage. If there’s one lesson I’ve learned from this life, it’s that if you’re working hard toward a goal, you’re going to get a lot of criticism. At first, you might think it’s because that person doesn’t like you or is picking on you, or something of that sort, but that’s the furthest thing from the truth. If someone is taking the time to give you feedback, especially if it’s negative, then that means the person wants you to succeed. “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm,” said Winston Churchill. People underestimate the power of a positive attitude. A positive attitude, hope, and faith that all things will turn out the way they are supposed to, can be life-changing.

10 Love It Magazine • Summer 2014

With all of this said, how do I keep a positive attitude and turn the negative comments into constructive criticism? It’s all about keeping a positive attitude even when you fail. Every failure is just a step toward success, after all. Having people in your life that care enough about you to push you so you reach your goals is a blessing, not a curse. Learning to use criticism as motivation is such an important part of reaching goals and can be that last barrier between your life now, and the life you want to live. Don’t let anyone rain on your parade. And never forget who you are because you are meant to do something great.

Life coach

GET IT! with

What exactly IS life coaching and who needs it? When you’re a professional athlete — and you want to unlock your body’s full potential — you hire an elite athletic coach. Your coach will design a customized program for you, guide you, motivate you, track your progress, and occasionally, kick you in the ass. Thanks to your coach, you’ll get stronger and reach your goals faster. You might even surpass your original goals — stepping into a new definition of what’s “possible.” Working with a life coach is exactly the same thing — except instead of training your body to run a marathon, we’re training your mind to get you through the marathon of life.

susan hyatt

What made you decide to become a life coach? What does that process look like? Has it always been your dream? Like many life coaches, I decided to become a coach after working with an extraordinary coach of my own and experiencing the results for myself! Eight years ago, you would not have recognized me. I was stuck in a job that drained the light out of my eyes, carrying around thirty more pounds than I wanted (or needed). Every morning, it was a monumental effort just to pull myself out of bed. Every night, I collapsed back into bed…bitter, bored and exhausted. Finally, I hit my breaking point —I happened to stumble upon the whole notion of “life coaching” and Dr. Martha Beck’s book, Finding Your Own North Star. It changed everything. I hired a coach, started to create my best life ever, enrolled in a coach training program, started working with clients…and the rest is hot-damn delicious history!

Eight years ago, you would not have recognized me.

Who needs it? Well, pretty much anyone who wants to feel like a total champion at life! Whether you’re trying to drop thirty pounds, build up the courage to launch a new business, or become the world’s most patient and awesome mom, working with a skilled life coach can help you make permanent changes, in so many parts of your life. 12 Love It Magazine • Summer 2014

What’s one way to overcome obstacles on your way to your goal?

Oh, hands down, it’s got to be transforming your MIND CRACK into MIND FUEL. It’s simple to do: Throughout your day, hit “pause” from time to time and really pay attention to the way that you’re talking to yourself, inside your head. Are your thoughts helpful, in terms of reaching your goals? Or harmful? If you’re thinking: “I’m so fat and disgusting. I haven’t lost a single pound this week, even though I’ve been trying. I blew it. Might as well eat that pint of ice cream…” Then, obviously, that is not a helpful thought. That’s the MIND CRACK that is addictive and harmful. It always leads to selfdefeating behavior…like bingeing on ice cream at midnight. This might seem really simple — notice a negative thought and tell it to leave! — but the tricky part is that most people aren’t even AWARE that they’re having these thoughts to begin with. They’re operating on auto-pilot, unaware of just how MEAN they are being to themselves, 24/7. So, to move forward with your goals, start paying a LOT closer attention to the way that you talk to yourself. Once you turn your MIND CRACK into MIND FUEL, you’ll be able to create the life that you want.

I’ve been curious about toxic friendships lately, as they don’t further us toward our best selves. Have you dealt with these? My teenage daughter and I were just talking about this very topic! We came up with a series of 5 questions to ask yourself, if you’re wondering whether or not to keep a particular friend in your life: 1. Does it feel good to be around her? 2. Does this friendship feel balanced? 3. Does she make you grow? 4. Would you call her at 4am? (Or respond to her SOS text?) 5. Do MIRACLES happen when she’s around? That last one is a BIG one. If the world feels safer, more welcoming and more full of possibility when you’re around her…she’s a keeper. But if you’re answering “no, no, no, no … no!” to those questions, she might not belong in your life. How do you “break-up” with a friend who’s no good for you? It’s pretty simple: You stop calling, texting, emailing or setting up dates. That’s it. People’s lives are crazy-busy. If you stop pumping energy into the friendship, the friendship will end itself. I see you’re a lover of Crossfit! How do you get yourself up every day to work out? What’s your motivation? Crossfit is simultaneously the WORST and BEST part of my day. Every single time I walk into that gym, I’m literally going, “What have I done? This is insane! My body can’t do that!” And yet, every single time, I walk out going, “That was AMAZING! I’m coming back tomorrow!” Crossfit constantly pushes me past my limit, and proves that

I’m capable of much more than I think. As a life coach, I LOVE that! I’m addicted to possibility, and Crossfit is all about blasting through what’s possible. Let’s talk about fear. What sort of self talk do you use when you feel scared to do something new or take it to a new level? In moments of fear and selfdoubt, I often turn to that classic quote by Marianne Williamson: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure […] We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.”When I read those words, I remember the truth: Playing small doesn’t serve the world. In order to create my best life — to become the best coach, wife, mom, sister and friend that I can possibly be — I need be brave. I need to be bold. I need to play big. If you could give one piece of advice to the women of Evansville about reaching their goals, what would it be? Sisters? Put that godforsaken smartphone down. Shut off your laptop. Step away from your desk. Set up a fun, thrilling, fabulous activity for yourself (and maybe a couple of girlfriends). Get out there…and savor the day! Life is short and so very precious. Go make it delicious.

Sun Salutations are the perfect sequence for everyone- not just beginners! I recommend between three and five sun salutations first thing in the morning. As you grow in your practice, feel free to get creative by adding or detracting from this sequence. Sun Salutations are meant to awaken and stretch your mind and body, gently helping to gain confidence and gauge your progress (when you are consistent). Try to come to your mat with an open mind, clear of judgements and expectations. Most importantly, remember to breathe and enjoy right where you are today. 1. MOUNTAIN POSE Root down through soles and lengthen up through finger tips. Engage lower body without clenching. 2. BACK BEND Keep tailbone long and lower belly engaged as you reach arms back, lifting the heart with your inhale and pressing hips forward on the exhale - be sure to keep any compression out of lower spine. 3. FORWARD FOLD Hinge at hip crease, inhale to lift and lengthen front body, exhale to release deeper into fold. 4. HALF LIFT With fingers next to toes, lift torso, reach heart forward to create arch in upper back. 5. LOW PLANK Keeping body in a straight line, exhale to bend elbows to 90º, hug elbows in and maintain core engagement. 6. UPWARD FACING DOG Press firmly through hands and tops of feet, engage legs and lift knees up. Draw shoulder blades together, take shoulders back and puff heart forward. 7. DOWNWARD FACING DOG Spread fingers and press firm through palms with upper back broad. Draw front ribs in, engage core and lift tailbone to lengthen spine. Engage quadriceps and relax heels toward the floor. Erin Little is a Certified Yoga Teacher. Visit her class at Yoga 101 (http://www.yoga-101.net) and Yoga at the Park Thursdays (6pm at Vann Park).

ack to school season is around the corner and families throughout the tri-state will be scurrying to find the best deals on notebooks, folders, backpacks and more. For freshmen entering college, this time can be very exciting and stressful. Living away from home means you’re probably low on funds and the idea of cooking in a 2’x4’ space seems inconceivable and time consuming. You want to stay healthy and you’re worried about packing on the 10-15 pounds everyone says you’ll gain during the first year. The good news: you can eat healthy and stay fueled for school, even on a budget! By keeping your pantry stocked with these nutritious staples, you can make quick and simple meals that satisfy morning, noon, and night!

1. CANNED BEANS A quick and easy protein source! Toss kidney, garbanzo, pinto, or black beans into salads and wraps for a filling lunch or dinner. 2. WHOLE WHEAT PASTAS & BREADS Choose breads that list whole wheat first in the ingredients. “Stoneground” and “100% wheat” does not a whole grain product make. A tip: check the label for fiber content and pick foods that have 3g or more. 3. CANNED VEGETABLES Canned veggies are an easy side to any dish, and they come in handy when making homemade soups and stews. Pick ones that say “low” or “reduced sodium”. 4. BROWN RICE A simple whole grain that can be cooked into any meal for a boost in flavor and fiber! 5. NUTS & SEEDS Rich in omega-3 and -6 fatty acids and vitamin E! Mix and match unsalted almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds and pepitas for a quick snack. 6. DRIED FRUITS Dried cranberries, cherries, and apricots are great by themselves or mixed with seeds and nuts for a simple trail mix you can keep in your book bag. 7. FRESH FRUIT Keep fresh apples, pears, or bananas out on your counter so they’re in sight and easy to grab; you’re more likely to eat them when they’re not tucked away in the refrigerator! 8. OATMEAL Heart-healthy and proven to reduce cholesterol, oats keep you feeling full throughout your busy day. Toss in walnuts, dried fruit, and a dash of cinnamon for a nutritious breakfast. 9. SWEET POTATOES Individually wrapped sweet potatoes are in grocery stores now! Pop them in the microwave to cook, then top with salsa, green onions, and low-fat sour cream. 10. PEANUT BUTTER Stir a low-sodium spread and cocoa powder into oatmeal for a chocolaty treat in the morning! 11. VEGETABLE OR CANOLA OIL Rich in omega-3 and-6 fatty acids, vegetable oils are perfect for cooking and lower in saturated fat than butter, lard, or other solid fats. 12. CEREALS Ready-to-eat and fortified with essential vitamins and minerals; stock up on the less sugary varieties that are made with whole grains like oats, bran, quinoa or wheat. 13. GRANOLA BARS Read labels to avoid added sugars, fat, sodium, or ingredients you can’t pronounce! 14. SPICES Dried herbs and spices are the best way to season dishes without adding tons of salt. Pick up a basic Italian seasoning, garlic powder, paprika and cinnamon to start. 15. BOTTLED WATER Avoid the sugary trap of vending machines on campus: Keep a case near your front door so you can grab one on your way to class! Sunshine Juice Co. is committed to exclusively Cold Press juicing the most pure, fresh, organic produce, ensuring the most nutritious, pesticide and preservative free juice for our community.

WHY COLD PRESS?

Since last summer, the Sunshine Stand has been transitioning to a cold press process. Cold Pressing allows juice to be exponentially more nutritious and bottled, for citywide distribution. The old process of Centrifuge juicing was great for on the spot juice, but using a spinning metal blade creates heat, speeding up oxidation, breaking down valuable nutrients. Cold Pressing is time-consuming and requires much more patience, but is void of harsh heating, resulting in minimized oxidation that protects and preserves those essential nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. We’re left with whole, fresh, raw, organic juice, with maximum nutrition and a 3-4 day shelf life!

WHY JUICE AT ALL?

The massive overload of information we receive makes it tricky to understand what to eat and what not to eat. However, no one would deny that fruits and vegetables are absolutely the most nutritious food choice. Most Americans (including vegetarians and vegans) have a difficult time consuming the FDA’s recommended 9-13 daily servings of fruits and vegetables. The depletion of our air and water quality continues to increase that number. One of the best, most efficient ways to consume that amount of pure, organic, nutrient dense, raw fruits and vegetables is via cold press juice. A buzzword in the health-world is “inflammation.” Systemic inflammation is when the body attacks itself because the immune system is confused on what is a friend and what is a foe, leading to chronic and autoimmune diseases. We must change our diet to heal the immune system by supporting it with nutrients. Pure organic juice is a wonderful (and delicious ) way to pack in a ton of nutrients, healing the body’s systems, from inside out.

WHY ORGANIC?

The label “Organic” means the product was grown or made according to the USDA’s strict standards: without the use of toxic, persistent chemicals, GMOs, antibiotics or hormones. Conventionally grown produce includes exposure to these potentially very harmful chemicals. Many EPA-approved pesticides were registered before research linked them to cancer and other diseases. Now, the EPA considers over half of all herbicides and fungicides as potentially cancer causing. Visit Sunshine Juice Co. on Facebook at facebook. com/sunshinejuiceco to find out where you can try one of their healthy and delicious juices for yourself.

hanna HAIR WITH

The temp outside is HOT and we want to make sure that your hairstyle is, too! Hanna gives us 6 summer tips for what’s hot and what is, well, not.

F

lip through the pages of your favorite fashion magazine and you will begin to notice how fashion, hair, and

makeup trends are constantly evolving. Whether it is changing

from year to year, or with the season, DO NOT get left behind! I’m here to give you my little take on what’s hot and what’s not. You do not want to be the next hair faux pas frolicking down Main Street.

1

OMBRE IS NOT, I’ve hated this style (or lack thereof) since its debut. Why on earth do you want your hair to look like it needed to be done a year ago? Ask your stylist to give you balayage highlights instead, if you would like a soft, natural approach to highlighting.

2

Low ponytails have been taking the runway by storm all spring and summer; it’s a very sleek look that shows off your best feature….Your BEAUTIFUL face! Apply a light oil to add shine and tame frizz, secure your pony loosely at the nape of your neck and you’re off!

26 Love It Magazine • Summer 2014

3

Attention all of my blonde bombshells; a very icy Nordic blonde is so in! To help with banishing brass, ask your stylist for a toner. To maintain your blonde, I recommend using Redken Blonde Idol Toning Conditioner.

4

The bob is back in full force. Much like Joan Rivers, this trend continually gets face lifts, but never stops being one of our favorites. Whether you prefer sleek and styled, or textured and tousled, there are plenty variations of this iconic style to fit your personal preference.

5

Next up, my personal favorite; the pixie is SO HOT. I 100% recommend everyone try short hair once in their life. Your personal style could be as short and funky as Halle Berry, or romantic and sleek, much like Michelle Williams, but all variations are FABULOUS. Before blow-drying your pixie, I like using Kevin Murphy Anti-Gravity beach texturizer for the perfect prep. Follow it by Paul Mitchell Dry Wax to perfect or dishevel the ends, add

shine and make your color pop!

6

Last but certainly not least; accessories! In the past year, headbands, wraps, turbans, and decorative pins have become the IT thing. It can be overwhelming to figure out how to wear decorative floral headbands. Keep it simple; your headband should be your statement piece. Let your hair be to a minimum, or if you’re one of those freaks that can wake up with the perfect messy wave…. let your freak flag fly! Don’t let your outfit or hair overtake your statement headpiece! Instead, opt for some bold sexy lashes to draw attention to your #smize, and work it. She has a range that makes even seasoned artists perk up, determined to figure out where that sound is coming from. I’ve seen Theophilus Akai (guitar) play around town in dimly lit bars before, so I know he has a way of making you feel like you are someplace else. His sound transcends his instrument and goes right through you, forcing you onto your feet. Adding Dene Stephens on intricate percussion sends this group straight into your sweet spot, and I mean that how you think I mean it…which is to say, whatever that means for you! Listening to them play in the studio, I am no longer under fluorescent lights, in a hard-backed chair with a pen and paper in my hand. I am surrounded by my closest friends, a glass of red wine in a clear plastic cup, barefoot and dancing on a hot summer night, their rhythmic sound my soulful guide. But don’t be mistaken—this group is just getting started. They are at the jumping off point, heading out on their first national tour. And I have a notion that this group will be just as down to earth when they are accepting their Grammy as they are sitting down with me in Evansville, IN.

LOVE IT: So let’s just start from the beginning, shall we? Where does the name Osiella originate? TA: Her [Cynthia’s] husband Kenneth [Murray],

our manager/producer, he has a lot of African American blood in his family. So this woman Osiella turns out to be like his great-greatgrandmother somehow. And he was with another friend and they were talking about it and his friend was like, “You know what? That word, ‘Osiella,’ that name would be an awesome band name.” He looks it up, she’s indeed in the family, and we just incorporated it.

LOVE IT: Readers want to know, what makes you guys connect? What’s the secret to your sound? CM: We click really well, man. DS: Chemistry. CM: Yeah, when we’re in the studio, it’s not forced. We just really enjoy it. It’s so much fun.

DS: Personally, it just kind of runs in my blood.

My dad was a musician; drummer, song writer, guitar player. So I can’t shake it even if I tried. I’ve got that rhythmic thing kind of flowing through

me at all times and I have to get it out somehow.

TA: I have an African background. I was born

there, and growing up my parents were always listening to really rhythmic music, kind of like Dene said. Started off playing violin, I hated it, and I switched to the guitar and I just figured like, oh my gosh, this is what I was meant to do.

LOVE IT: And you guys are getting ready to go out on tour! Tell me about how you’re feeling. Are you excited, are you anxious, what’s going through your mind? CM: All of the above! TA: Yeah, I mean, it’s not all glitz and glamour. It’s going to be hard work. But I think it will pay off in the long run.

LOVE IT: And how are you traveling? CM: In a band van. (laughing from all) It’s the three of us, plus our manager/producer.

TA: We’re going to San Antonio and Austin,

Texas. Then we’re going as far East as New York, to Brooklyn for a long time and then even Florida, most likely Panama City Beach. So we’re hitting spots.

LOVE IT: You know traveling in close quarters can be fun but it can also be challenging. Who do you think is the biggest diva of the group? [TA and DS point to CM]

CM: No! No, no, because this whole time Theo’s

Ingredients: 1 lb. lean ground turkey ½ c yellow onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced

worrying about how he’s going to get his hair cut—

1 medium green bell pepper, diced

TA: Hold up, Hold up!

1 package low sodium taco seasoning

CM: ‘Wait a minute. We’ve got to take breaks. I’ve got to come back and get my hair cut every now and then!’

TA: Shout out to Gerald’s Barber Shop! I wouldn’t

even say any of us are going to be divas. We’ve become such close friends in a short amount of time. I think we’ll be just fine.
