DREAM I T
he word “dream” gets tossed around a lot these days. We’re told to “dream big” or “shoot for the stars,” and while this IS great advice, we often forget the most important part of all: doing something about it! I believe you can achieve almost anything if you take continuous action toward it. Now, let me tell you, this isn’t always going to look pretty. When I decided to pursue performing as a profession, I had zero idea what my journey would look like. Sure, I had plans. And I took the steps I thought I needed to take: I got a BFA in Musical Theatre from

Along the way, there have been many ups and downs. I’ve gotten to travel the country, meet incredible people, and live a life that makes me feel like I may never have to “growup.” Right now, I’m doing a play in Louisville, KY and just today before I went into a scene I thought “I can’t believe I’m still getting paid to do this.” But it hasn’t always been like this. periods of drought when I doubted myself, my talents, and my entire career. I’ve considered giving up. It’s times like these that shape us. I live by the mantra that successful people see failures as blessings. They learn to appreciate their hardships because they build strength and character. If you can be one of the few that pushes through the bumps in the road and continues to take action toward your dream, time after time, you will achieve it. I have no doubt. Take action today. Do

O N E T W O T H R EE F O U R Section the hair at the nape of the neck, making sure to have clean partings. Next, create subsections 2-3 inches in width.
Wrap each section around the iron, starting at the base and continuing to the ends while constantly rotating the iron.
Once you have released the curl into your hand, use curl pins to secure the curl to the head to allow for cooling.
8 Love It Magazine • Spring 2014
You will continue up the head, and repeat the same technique on the side. (Bang area is optional) Once your entire head is set into the curls, allow to cool for at least 15 minutes. This is a great time to apply makeup, paint your nails, check social media, etc.
Once curls are set, I suggest you chose your favorite oil for step 5. Our favorite is Paul Mitchell . Awaphui Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil; it is dry oil with a matte powder finish. You will have added luster and shine without the “oily” look.
WITH HA N N A WI L L IAM S A timeless look dating back to the 1920s, the Hollywood set is still so in trend thanks to fabulous women like BeyoncĂŠ, the Kardashian Klan and of course Marilyn Monroe. This easy how to will update your Saturday night looks and keeps heads turning.
F I V E S Apply a generous amount of oil to your hands and begin taking each curl out. Finger over each curl with the treatment oil, while slightly pulling at them to lengthen the curls.
IX S E V E N EI G H T
After all curls have been released, THO R O U G H L Y brush through all of the hair with a boar bristle brush. Repeat brushing until waves begin to form.
Once waves are thoroughly brushed out and placed into desired look, finish with hair spray and shine spray for a polished end result. We recommend Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine Spray, and Kevin Murphy Session Spray hair spray.
The final step is to throw on your best pumps, some lipgloss and rock your Hollywood Waves like Kim K herself!

hat is beauty? Surely it should be easy to define, since it’s something that most of us study on a daily basis. We gloss over magazines, search the sites, pin the pins, stalk the pictures, all in search of the next tip or trick that will help make us more ‘beautiful.’ But is beauty really that fleeting? Is it something that can be applied and dyed? If I were to ask you who the most beautiful people in your life are, what faces would you picture? I immediately jump to my friend Sally, when she’s singing her music on stage, her face glowing, body in sync with the melody. She’s expressing herself in the highest state in that moment. That’s undeniably, unshakably, beautiful. I also picture my Mema who, as soon as she sees my car pull up, gets sweet potatoes out to scrub clean and put in oven so I have something to eat. She shares her beauty by being able to selflessly care about the ones she loves. The term “beautiful” has a traditionally feminine connotation
and yet many women feel trapped instead of inspired by the word. It’s been used to pressure us and define our worth. What if we took back the word? Instead of relying on outside potions to create our beauty, what if we looked at those things as only the final strokes of an already incredible masterpiece? What makes you feel beautiful when you say it, do it and express it? Say, do and express those things. If that means putting on your best outfit, your highest pair of heels and your brightest shade of lipstick--DO THAT! Because you feel good, you’ll radiate that. But be sure to recognize each person’s unique form of beauty and acknowledge it when you do. By searching for those tender, lifegiving moments in others, I think we can begin to create and find it within ourselves. That shade of beauty doesn’t need an Instagram filter. That’s the kind of beauty you’ll be remembered for.

Why natural soap?
We read our food labels closely to make sure we can pronounce the ingredients we are putting IN our bodies, shouldn’t we give the same amount of attention to the ingredients we slather ON our bodies. Think about it, when we are in a nice hot shower our pores open up and our skin is ripe to receive whatever we put on it! Our skin is the largest organ and first line of defense. We need to treat it well. Most commercial body washes contain dyes, perfumes, harsh surfactants (like sodium lauryl sulfates) and detergents that, at the very least, can be irritating to the skin and strip it of its natural oils. Hand-crafted cold-processed soap does not contain any of these synthetic chemicals, but it does contain skin loving glycerin which is a natural by-product of the soap making process.
What are some simple skin solutions?
Our winter has been rough and most of us are struggling with dry skin. To help combat dry skin, first we need to stop using harsh detergents. Switch to a gentle, natural soap that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. Second, we need to moisturize! Natural food grade oils make great lotions! We formulate various oil blends to help with varying degrees of dryness. But one simple solution you can try at home is Unrefined, Organic Coconut Oil. It is a staple in our kitchen as well as our bathroom. This is an effective and affordable alternative to costly creams! It is our eye make-up remover, face lotion and hair treatment. Olive

Oil is another common kitchen staple people can use in their body care regimen. There are many superior alternatives to chemically preserved, parabenladen lotion!
Shouldn’t we use antibacterial Hand Soap?
A U.S. FDA advisory committee found that use of antibacterial soaps provides no benefits over plain soap and water. The main reason to avoid antibacterial soaps is its active ingredient: triclosan. The American Medical Association recommends that triclosan not be used at home, as it may encourage bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Furthermore, wastewater treatment does not remove the entire chemical, which means it ends up in our lakes, rivers and water sources. Much of this information and other helpful tips can found on the on this website: http://www.ewg.org/research/ healthy-home-tips/tip-5-washthose-hands-avoid-triclosan When you can’t get to a sink to wash, opt for a tricloson free alcohol gel. axi dresses and skirts have gone from a trend to a closet staple – and there’s a good reason for that! Maxi dresses not only look good on every figure but they are easy to take from day to night. It’s easy to pull off a look that is relaxed yet still put together. You can instantly create a feminine look without appearing overdressed while running errands, having coffee with your girlfriends, or strolling on the beach. So how do you pick the right style? The perfect maxi shouldn’t be too tight or too big, and lucky for you this style is so popular you can find anything from solid colors to bold prints to fit your style. You can go edgy with color blocking or go flirty with floral and ethnic prints. Maxi dresses and skirts are great because not only do they flaunt those amazing curves but they hide those flaws we don’t like to show. This all goes back into picking the right fit! Pick a maxi that cinches at the waist or that has an empire seam. If you have an hourglass shape show a little skin at the top and try a halter or strapless maxi dress. Fuller figured

women look great in this style because the full, longer circle skirt of a maxi dress creates the illusion of a longer, leaner figure by drawing the eyes downward. Switching from day to night with this style is simple, but choosing the right fabric is so important! A soft cotton skirt or dress is going to look more casual, but a colored chiffon dress can go to nighttime in a snap with the right accessories. Slip on a sleek cropped leather jacket and then switch out your casual sandals for wedges or pumps. Add a statement necklace and a trendy clutch to complete the look! The best part about this style is you don’t have to spend a fortune and you are going to get a piece you can wear year round for under $50!

ook back at your photos from last year’s big events and one similarity you will notice is the mass of black dresses in the background. Next to a bunch of black suits and tuxedos, these black gowns all blend together to basically construct a black back drop for the entire event. What gives? Why does every woman believe that her attire must be black to maintain a certain level of class and sophistication? Ladies, it’s a lie!!! Yes, a black dress (especially a “little black dress”) is re-wearable and safe, but is safe REALLY what you want to portray at these beautiful, shiny events? I. Think. Not. After much deliberation, I’ve concluded that the confusion stems from the use of the words
Kassy Lauer “black tie” on most of the invites to these weddings, galas, and balls. “Black Tie” is meant to suggest the level of dress that is appropriate for an event, nothing more! Thanks to Justin Timberlake for rocking a grey tuxedo to many occasions (truly bringing sexy back), we may see “grey tie” start appearing on party requests (ladies, please don’t think that means you have to wear a grey dress). The concept of black being a “slimming” color is also an influence. I can assure you that a properly fitting dress in any color- as long as it flatters your body type, is equally slimming. I recently encountered a beautiful thirty-something woman in my dress boutique who described the dress she hoped to purchase
and wear for a local gala she was attending. Some of the (quite frankly, boring) adjectives she used to give me some insight into her wardrobe concept included: basic, black, and simple. I wanted to shake her! She was far too lovely to camouflage with the other black dresses that would surely create the abyss of scenery at her event. After a bit of persuasion (I may or may not have begged or threatened her a little), she agreed to try on a delicately beaded iridescent white gown with the back out and then stood smiling at herself in a mirror for close to an hour. It was stunning and she knew it. She left beaming and I’d bet a thousand bucks she drowned in compliments at her event. If you insist on having your black and wearing it too, PLEASE make it shimmery, wear some colorful or interesting shoes, or add in some flavor with your accessories. You can also combat the boredom of black with a dramatically cut dress (preferably floor length) or details like lace, beading, and a corset back. Frank Sinatra once said that “if a man enjoys an occasion to wear a tuxedo, he should do so” and to you ladies I say, if you have an opportunity to stand out in the crowd, don’t you dare try to blend in! Nothing says “that woman is confident as hell” quite like a beautiful lady in a bold dress with a smile to match. If you’re playing it safe, you’re not playing your cards correctly! Or is the challenge of claiming your internal vision and title of manhood simply part of becoming a real man? It’s time to stop making excuses for false ideals and start taking personal responsibility so that we may take our understanding to the next level. Our views on relationships in the modern world are breaking into new molds, and during times of serious change, there is often a “pain period” associated with it. Have you ever decided to hit the gym to get that new body, learning and prepping yourself for what it takes? That’s awesome, but it’s still gonna hurt. Ask anybody who’s ever had to work to earn his or her dreams and goals. It takes blood, sweat, and tears, but it’s worth it. When it comes to relationships, it’s ok to have high hopes, but they must be met with realistic expectation along with respect for nature. Our nature as human beings is what makes a relationship special. We are all unique and living forms who have extraordinary capabilities to achieve through diligence and hard work, and our relationships are the same.
