Opening times will have changed, and you’ll need to book a ticket before visiting, but with nine fascinating museums and collections to visit, you can spend the odd day and plenty of weekends finding new objects, facts, and stories to explore.

Now, let’s take a whistle stop tour around the museums...

The Fitzwilliam Museum houses half a million objects from all around the world, displaying everything from impressionist masterpieces to Egyptian coffins.

Just down the road is the Polar Museum, where you can discover the astonishing stories of Earth’s coldest, driest, windiest, highest and deadliest places.

Fancy a walk amongst the Gods and heroes? Hello, Museum of Classical Archaeology. The museum’s Cast Gallery is a testament to the wonder of the ancient past, housing one of the finest collections of plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculpture anywhere in the world.

The Whipple Museum of the History of Science holds exhibits which date from the apparatus of the Middle Ages to the technology of today and encompass a vast array of scientific instruments, models and more.

Next up is the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, home to one million artefacts spanning nearly two million years of human history. These range from recent Cambridge archaeological finds to works of African, Oceanic and Asian art.

The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences reminds us that we are far from the only life on this planet.

Thousands of fossils attest to the variety of plant and animal life across the earth and illustrate the evolution of life in the oceans, on the land and in the air.

The Museum of Zoology displays thousands of specimens from across the entire animal kingdom. The collections include elephants, giant ground sloths and giraffes, birds, reptiles, insects and molluscs.

Lastly we have Kettle’s Yard. This is the former home of Jim and Helen Ede, who drew together and displayed their exceptional collections of twentieth century art alongside natural and found objects. With pieces ranging from abstract sculpture to photographic prints, the Kettle’s Yard experience is guaranteed to provoke thought and discussion for the journey home.

Join Breakfast Show host Josh Lovatt for an afternoon filled with all the usual fun and festivities.

He’ll be joined by several local community groups to celebrate all things Christmas.

The Big Switch On at home Sunday 15th November

The schedule* will be:

13:00 – 15:00: A festive warm up - Star Radio will be playing Christmas tunes and speaking with people who are at home enjoying the show.

15:00 – 16:45: Performances from local community groups including the Rock Choir, Tom Korni, Sing Choirs, and a special appearance from Santa. We will also be talking to Mayor of Cambridge, Russ McPhearson.

16:45: Mayor of Cambridge and Santa will be counting down the Big Switch On moment.

17:00: THE BIG SWITCH ON The virtual switch on will take place at 5pm, be sure to be listening to Star Radio on 100.7 or online throughout the day to find out how you can watch and get involved.You will be able to see the Market Square, Grand Arcade and Lion Yard switch on their lights from the comfort of your own home!

17:00 – 18:00: Party time! All the party tunes will be played to really kick off this year’s festivities.

Cambridge is a fabulous city in all seasons but something quite magical happens when autumn turns to winter. The Christmas lights are illuminated from mid-November and there is a certain buzz in the air. Along with all the fabulous Christmas shopping, why not explore what else Cambridge has to offer. There is so much choice when it comes to eating, drinking, and having fun with the family, here is a tiny snippet of what is on offer.

RESTAURANTS Cambridge has a fantastic selection of restaurants for you to enjoy – booking is key and expect to leave your details for track and trace purposes using the QR code and new NHS app.

Cambridge has restaurants to cater for all tastes and budgets offering something for everyone. There are several independent eateries that complement the national chains in the city.

Giggling Squid opened its doors at the end of September in Cambridge. Giggling Squid is all about the spirit of Thai mealtimes - plentiful dishes, bold flavours and exotic ingredients - to be shared and enjoyed together. The menu offers something for everyone from luscious curries and hearty bowls - such as Lamb Shank Massaman and Thai Melting Beef – to sizzling stir fries, spicy Thai salads and the popular lunchtime Thai Tapas.
