Editorial Top marks for creativity to a leading Spanish hotel chain.

Every year, after Pantone reveal their colour of the year, design and décor companies rush to seize the promotional initiative. December 2019 was no exception, but on this occasion Barceló was especially adept and fleet-footed.

Immediately (albeit clearly with some preparation) they announced that two of their hotels in Cádiz province were offering a range of smoothies to emulate the last five Pantone colours of the year – plus 2020’s “Classic Blue”. Nutritionists at Barceló Montecastillo and Royal Hideaway Sancti Petri created the distinctive blends: “Marsala” (2015), “Rose Quartz & Serenity” (2016), “Greenery” (2017), “Ultra Violet” (2018) and “Living Coral (2019), and their 2020 smoothie containing a combination of antioxidant fruits (blueberries, blackberries and strawberries) for a “boost in energy and life”.

Quite simple enough, in fact, to prepare at home following the invariable Christmas-New Year indulgences, while contemplating how we can incorporate “Classic Blue” elsewhere other than than just in a smoothie blender.

But first… why “Classic Blue”? According to Pantone, the 2020 colour “instils calm, confidence and connection, highlighting our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era… a timeless and enduring blue hue elegant in its simplicity…

Imprinted in our psyches as a restful colour, Pantone 194052 Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to spirit, offering refuge.”

Added Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, “A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”

To determine each year’s colour, institute experts seek out new influences related to the entertainment industry, art collections, fashion, design and travel destinations, as well as socio-economic conditions, technologies, social media platforms and sporting events.

Meanwhile, Dulux might not create the same frenzy as Pantone, but each year specialists at their Global Aesthetic Centre also announce their colour of the year. For 2020, it is “Tranquil Dawn”, complemented by four “mood” palettes.

“Tranquil Dawn” is described as “a delicate, fluid combination of green, grey and blue… inspired by the morning sky, to help give homes the human touch. This versatile shade of green can be used to create spaces for care or for play, to find meaning or for creativity.”

For Dulux, the start of a new decade in 2020 provides the opportunity for a fresh start – a new dawn. “In an increasingly hectic and digital world, there is a desire for meaning and kindness.”

Your living room is probably the most visited place in your home. As it is usually the first area where you bring guests on their arrival, this is the room that will give visitors their first impression. Getting it right is therefore very important, as it also sets the tone for the rest of the house. Investing in a chic but also comfortable sofa is imperative. A good-quality sofa will see you through for many years to come, while a pouf softens up the look – adding extra seating options in emergencies. Never forget to add side tables so you can rest your mug of cocoa or glass of wine at a convenient arm’s length when lounging. For a cosy ambience, rugs, curtains, cushions and throws are always a good way to add texture and make the room even more inviting. Keep the eye interested around the room, with lots of ambient lighting and bold artwork, plus an iconic cabinet to maintain the room organised while also making a design statement. Neutral colours can leave a room feeling cold and washed-out, so consider going bolder with some rich and indulgent tones to add a luxurious, inviting feel to the room. Bring nature indoors and have some plants dotted around. A pop of green brings a calming tone to the room and, in the evening, up-lighting on plants can throw beautiful shapes and shadows around the space.

Cortidea has been a go-to showroom on the Mijas Road for latest trends in textiles and wallpaper for decades. Now they have opened another showroom in Marbella – an obvious move as they had so many clients from Marbella travelling to Mijas for their products and services.

When it comes to buying fabrics and wallpapers, it is very important to feel and see with your own eyes the textures and colours, and this is why Cortidea decided to open up another showroom closer to clients who have always travelled so far to visit them in order to experience the true product for themselves.

Their contemporary showroom situated in the prestigious Marbella Real urbanisation is modest in size compared to their rangy showroom on the Mijas road, where they also house their workshop, but it still offers a huge range of latest collections from the likes of Christian Lacroix, JAB Anstoetz, Designers Guild, Ege, Aldeco, Luxaflex... and the list goes on.

Cortidea owner Henrik Staer-Jorgensen comments, “We like to move with the times, which is why Marbella seemed an obvious area in which to expand.

We like the cosmopolitan feel of Marbella and we know that people in the area already appreciate our brands and the services that we offer. There are many interior designers and furniture shops in the area so we feel our showroom really fits in well.”

Bathrooms are often stark and clinical, lacking personality and warmth, but this does not have to be the case. This important area in your home should not be neglected when the rest of your home has received so much thought. Adding a touch of glamour or creativity will not necessarily have to come with a hefty price tag. Don’t be afraid of injecting colour into the bathroom – these rooms don’t always have to be white! You can add colour, for example, through the use of tiles or a bold water-resistant wallpaper, colourful wash basin or dramatic floor-to-ceiling shower curtain around a stand-alone bath. Can you tell us more about your showroom in Estepona and why you chose this particular location?

your feet Floors are often forgotten when setting about updating a room, whereas they could be where you are able to make the most difference. You will be amazed how investing in new flooring can transform a room. Large-scale tiles and hardwood or engineered wood flooring are popular options in southern Spain, but that is just scratching the surface as to the possibilities available. During the winter months, cosyup your living spaces with a beautiful rug to add warmth to the ambience and under your feet. They are great sound absorbers and, if you go for a bold design, it can add a strong focus to the room, bringing every element together visually. WHY DINE OUT When You Can

Dine In? During the winter months, it is safe to say we dine in more – and our dining table and chairs receive more attention. Recently we have been seeing more natural materials used for tabletops such as wood and natural stone. Circular tables are great for casual gatherings around the dinner table, whilst rectangular tables are usually more appropriate for formal occasions. But, of course, this all depends on the size and shape of the room. Here are some ideas…

BESPOKE HOMES Interview with Head of Design at Antima, Synne Brendmoe.

How did Antima come about and when?

We are fourth generation. Antima has roots as far back as 1929, when our great-grandfather started the company under the Brendmoe name. Since then the company has changed names several times, but has always stayed a family-run business.

Originally, Brendmoe was purely a painting company. In 1958, the second generation took over and expanded our services, offering furniture restoration, wallpaper and carpentry. When my father inherited the company in 1982 he grew it into a successful and renowned decorating firm in Scandinavia. It was a natural progression for him to diversify the business into real estate – buying, renovating and selling apartment complexes at an international level. Six years ago, my family and I decided to sell a part of our Norwegian

portfolio, which included a handful of apartment buildings and a boutique hotel in the heart of Oslo. We also had a yacht in the high-end charter industry in Monaco, which we sold as well. At the time I had just graduated with a degree in interior design, and my brother moved back from the US where he had studied business administration.

We both wanted to join the family business and had many ideas about where we wanted to take the company. In a short time, we found ourselves in a position where we were able to embark on many new business opportunities. How do you like to approach a new project and what do you focus on the most?

Each home has a unique character and it is my job to enhance that. The flow of the house is very important and we spend a lot of time maximising the potential of each room. In the beginning of the design process I usually work from the project site.

I stand in the room I am creating and look at the characteristics and elements. I decide on what I want to enhance, always taking into consideration the organic flow of the room.

It is important that the exterior and interior design uphold the same expression. After the first brainstorming meeting I start creating a general mood board and a board for each room. I work closely with the architect and project manager to find the best solutions for the layout, garden, façade and design.

We love to work with natural materials, and restoring old elements such as doors, floors and furniture. The contrast from new and old is an important element in an Antima home. I always try to tell a story through the colors, furnitures and decoration I use. We are proud to create homes that can be passed down through generations to come.

What is the basic concept behind Antima?

We create homes, not houses. Each project is tailor-made in collaboration with some of the most innovative artisans in the world. Timeless, high comfort and beautiful aesthetics are the expressions which best describe our projects. The houses are completely refurbished inside and out. For Antima, the main focus is on creating quality and uniqueness in the high-end luxury market.

Would you say you have a particular design style? If so, how would you describe it?

We always strive to create user-friendly, smart, high-quality homes. We are proud that each house has its own unique style, but there are certain elements we like to use throughout all of our projects, such as iron doors, water features, fireplaces and natural materials.

Oak furniture and stone details are some of the elements you will always find in an Antima home.

All the furniture, including kitchen, wardrobes and bathrooms, are exclusively designed and custommade for each house by local manufacturers. Each piece is hand-drawn and we specify the materials, colours and sizes, to fit each particular home.

What future plans are in store for Antima?

I don’t want to give away too much information – time will tell. What I can say is that we are launching the Antima brand into several countries around the globe and expanding into other businesses, which are a natural progression for our expertise in luxury real estate projects and interior design.

Maison&Objet will be focusing its attention on the future when the Paris décor, interior design, architecture and lifestyle fair commemorates its 25th anniversary in 2020.

As part of its exploration of new trends in consumer behavior being driven by generations Y and Z, Maison&Objet has adopted the theme “(Re)Generation!”, which will run throughout the year. According to the organisers, the January edition (17th to 21st) “will decipher the desires and expectations of an ‘engaged generation’ that has grown up in a world of crises affecting the economy, the environment, identities and migration”.

Meanwhile, the September edition (4th to 8th) “will turn the spotlight on what the ‘augmented generation’ wants – a generation raised on a diet of social media and the internet”.

Andalucian Garden IN WINTER

Thanks to the excellent climate here on the Costa del Sol, we can enjoy life in our garden and terraces all year round. Unlike in colder countries, there is less need to prepare the outside spaces for frost and harsh winters but there is a series of steps you should take to look after your swimming pool and plants.

The experts at Atlas Pool and Atlas Garden, part of Atlas Group, give their tips for a healthy garden and pool in the winter months...

WINTER CARE FOR THE POOL Using the pool in the winter? Yes, it’s perfectly possible! Atlas Group is a specialist in pool construction and maintenance and will recommend and install a cover for your pool, either automatic or manual, as well as heat pumps to circulate warmth through the water. It’s possible to have clean and warm water all year round, without major works or modifications to your home.

Keep the pool filled: It is always better to keep the pool filled with water even if it is not in use. Not only will it save a lot of money on your water bill by avoiding an unnecessary refill, but it will also protect the surface from the sun’s rays, save on chemicals and ultimately help the environment.

Review filtration times: Review the filtration times to adapt to the cooler conditions. During the summer, eight to 10 hours of filtration is typical but this can be lowered to four to six in winter. Every pool is different though, so obtain advice from your maintenance company.

Check the chemistry and heating system: Every time you have your pool cleaned the water chemistry should be checked, but during the winter months it is even more important after intense summer activity. The pH, chlorine and salt levels and alkalinity are vital to check.

WINTER CARE FOR THE GARDEN Even in the winter months, Andalucía basks in some fantastic sunny days and pleasant temperatures, but gardens must still be prepared for rainfall and a change in the atmosphere.

Feed, feed, feed: The cooler months between January and March are the perfect time to fertilise. The gardeners at Atlas Garden recommend that a natural compost with ecological fertiliser be used in the garden, which will help to retain water, improve the soil structure and add back the minerals lost in the hot months.

Take care of the little people: When low temperatures hit, the birds and small animals in our gardens struggle to find food. Put out some dry food and a water dispenser until warmer weather returns, and consider installing small houses in the trees for the species that stay here year-round. The birds fill our gardens with colour and movement, and they will thank you for considering them!

Review the irrigation: It is vital that the irrigation systems in your garden are reviewed at the end of summer, ahead of the heavy rainfall and drop in temperatures. With an excess of water, diseases such as fungi and root rot can occur. Atlas Garden install rain sensors to avoid unnecessary watering and the team checks the irrigation on a weekly basis.

Protect and care for plants less resistant to the cold: Sometimes we have more delicate plants in our gardens or terraces. For those less tolerant of the cold, move them to sunny areas and out of the wind. January to March is a great time to plant bulbs; tulips, hyacinths and daffodils bring pops of colour in the spring.

Easy steps for a beautiful lawn: Winter is a hard time for grasses and it’s vital

that you maintain it so that it survives the elements and sprouts again beautifully in the spring. Not all lawns endure the same winter; Bermuda will stop growing but Festucas, Poas or Ray grass will enjoy the lower temperatures and continue to grow. This means that every lawn must be checked and maintained independently. Take special care when you cut the grass too; excess cutting will weaken the grass, and weeds and moss could start to grow through.

It is also important to remove leaves that have fallen from the trees as they can rot and leave the garden looking ugly. The team at Atlas Garden maintain the lawns in the winter months by airing them with special machines and using a suitable fertiliser.

Welcome to 2020 and, for all those who have followed my writings, thank you.

For you and for new readers, a very happy New Year to you all.

Our gardens have maybe taken a bit of a battering with winter but it’s not the time for despair. On the contrary: let’s breathe new life and strength into them. As I keep reiterating, gardening is all about planning, preparing the ground ready for sowing or planting, sowing or planting for later on, and good pruning to increase the yield of fruit or flowers.

If you enjoy using herbs in the kitchen – who doesn’t – start thinking now about preparing the ground and planting the first of the herbs you will enjoy this spring. List the herbs you use and then think of where to plant them.

You know where the sunny spots are or where lots of shadow falls onto the plants. This is very important in preparation, making sure the plants get the best start. Herbs: very many shrubby herbs are native to the Mediterranean.

Sage, thyme, lemon thyme, rosemary, marjoram, its less spicy cousin oregano, sweet bay and culinary lavenders to start with. They don’t need very good ground, as they can grow anywhere, including very well in pots. Gravelly, sandy clay found on the Costa del Sol is normal to them so don’t worry if the soil is not so wonderful. From time to time put some good fertiliser into the soil; it’s the same effect as we have taking vitamins. Bay and oregano produce healthier plants if they are in well-composted soil. I love culinary lavender as you can throw it into salads or on top of fish, and it gives intense flavour. Also, it can be used in desserts.

Watch how you plant shrubby herbs: sage spreads, thyme not so much, as does rosemary and bay. Lavender just does its own thing; it can grow massive so allow space or a large pot(s). Bees love lavender and bees are our best friends! Remove any old weed roots if planting straight into the ground; and, of course, whether in the ground or in a pot, make sure drainage is good.

Marjoram will grow tall, as will sage and rosemary, so off to the back they go.

One plant of each is enough. All the other lovely herbs will grow well with care.

Go mad and plant a lot of chillies in March; they will be perfect for summer and later. A couple of pots of mine have suddenly grown again although I cut them back carefully, and they are throwing out chillies with abandon. Leafy perennial herbs will come into being as from March, as do the annuals, so prepare your soil and pots from now and dig plenty of compost into the soil.

As for the rest of your plants, give them a good scrutiny, cut back old dried branches/twigs, thin out old undergrowth and give them all a good boost of fertiliser mixed into the soil – and you have already started the way to go forward.

Don’t forget that the start of any good garden is in its planning and preparation. Get this right and it should be something of splendour.

World Architecture Festival Awards Gala in Amsterdam More than 1,000 entries were received for the 2019 INSIDE and World Architecture Festival awards programme. A total of 534 shortlisted entries across 70 countries were presented by international architects and designers, and the winners in several categories were announced at a gala dinner and awards ceremony at the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre in Amsterdam in December.

These included main awards for world building, future project and landscape of the year, as well as interior of the year presented as part of the WAF’s sister event, INSIDE. A global platform “where the world architecture community meets to celebrate, learn, exchange and be inspired”, WAF is the largest annual, international, live architectural event. The awards programme is “dedicated to celebrating excellence via live presentations to an audience of high-profile delegates and international juries”.

In addition to a live judging of the finalists’ projects and the gala awards dinner, the 2019 World Architecture Festival (WAF) also comprised a thematic conference programme (this year based on the “flow”, exploring themes such as the flow of ideas, data and time), an electronic gallery of all award entries, an exhibition area, an architectural tour programme, and networking and social events.

According to the WAF, INSIDE “is where the global design community meets to be inspired by the latest and greatest in global interior design and architecture. Over three days INSIDE shines a spotlight on the people, projects and developments that are changing the face of global interiors.”

Finalists were shortlisted across nine categories: Bars and Restaurants, Civic, Culture and Transport, Creative Re-Use, Display, Health and Education, Hotels, Offices, Residential and Retail.

World Building of the Year Also winners of the “Culture – Completed Buildings” category award, civic architects (lead architect) Braaksma & Roos Architectenbureau and Petra Blaisse at Inside Outside were recognised for their LocHal Public Library, a new urban living room for Tilburg in an iconic former locomotive shed of the Dutch National Railways.

Judges celebrated the project for its “fine details and the use of textiles which create the necessary intimacy for the human scale, whilst considering the old steel structure”. The project provides a space for all ages to read, learn, study, meet and gather, while enjoying a design that features historical elements such as the original train tracks as well as new oak and steel additions. The judges also commented that the building was “thoughtfully designed and yet not over-designed”.

Adept and Karres En Brands, together with Transsolar, Büro Happold, Kraft also won the “Masterplanning – Future Projects” award for The Connected City Oberbillwerder. The 360-hectare masterplan close to Hamburg City Centre was described by the jury as having “comprehensive and well thought out strategies” when designing the masterplan.

Landscape of the Year Original Design Studio’s Demonstration Section of Yangpu Riverside Public Space in Shanghai (China) was praised by the judges as “a smart solution for several complicated tasks. A design that celebrates the remains of Shanghai’s industrial riverside heritage. The scheme reconnects the city with the waterfront by re-using the material language of this historic site in an innovative way with excellent details.”

World Interior of the Year The winner of the main INSIDE award was J.C. Architecture for JCA Living Lab, a regenerated Japanese Colonial house in Taipei city (Taiwan) that transformed a traditional house into a new type of environment for urban living.

The judges were impressed with how the house “is unusually in tune with the differing and sometimes contradictory needs of a young family. Every space can be negotiated and adapted, encouraging the house to be an incubator for positive difference in the family unit.

“Local craftspeople were drafted in when needed and recycled elements were mixed freely with new. Ladders to the roof level encourage ongoing hide and seek. NEW DECADE - NEW LOOK FOR YOUR HOME

Welcome 2020!

As we are about to move into a new decade, I invite you to ask yourself: what does your home need to bring in the new? Does it feel good when you walk in the door or is it messy and drab? Does it really represent you? Is it your oasis or is it just a place to lay your hat?

Set yourself a mini-project and evaluate your home space with fresh eyes and ask yourself what works and what does not. What areas would you like to change and upgrade, what areas need fixing and what items are past their best and need throwing out and replacing...

Here are some simple “how to” tips to energise, revamp and recreate your home. Before evaluating I would thoroughly recommend you clear the space first!

CLEAR THE CLUTTER A cost-free, quick and absolutely essential way to bring new energy into your home is by clearing the clutter. Sounds simple but you will be surprised and delighted with the results, so set aside a block of time to really focus, clear out what is not needed and rationalise.

In preparation, buy some sturdy bin bags and at least two large boxes. Make an overview plan and, one by one, open those over-spilling drawers, kitchen cabinets, utility rooms and wardrobes. Take everything out, making three

piles: keep, throw away or charity shop/pass on to someone who might need it.

You will find that the “keep” pile needs reorganising before putting it all back, as often things are just stored in the wrong place. Put same items together and consider the best place for easy access.

Ask yourself: am I ever really going to use or wear this, or shall I just move it on? It’s liberating.

Once you have made your piles it is important to quickly evacuate before you change your mind and the items take root once again.

WISH LIST Having now cleared the space go to the next step. What areas of your home do you like, what areas would you change if you could, what areas may need repair… Make a wish list and take a tour around your home, looking at the categories below and evaluating.

SOFT FURNISHINGS – CURTAINS, CUSHIONS, THROWS, BED LINEN AND TOWELS Do you still like them? Has your taste changed and moved on? Are the colours/design bringing the right look and feel or is time for an upgrade?

PAINTWORK Could the walls and ceilings do with freshening up? When did you last decorate? Could your space be enhanced with a palette change? Perhaps a lighter/darker tone, or an accent wall in either a chic colour or wallpaper.

FLOORS – TILES, MARBLE, WOOD AND RUGS Are your tiled or marble floors tired looking? Has the grout deteriorated with age? A whole space can be dramatically upgraded with a new tiled floor. Perhaps you always wanted a wooden floor? If you don’t already have under-floor heating, this is certainly a real feel-good factor on cold rainy days, especially in bathrooms.

ROOM LAYOUTS – INCLUDING PICTURES/ARTWORK Take an objective look. Could your space flow better with a simple reorientation of your existing furniture or perhaps you need to go further? Is that guest bedroom better with a sofa bed, freeing up an area for your desk or hobby space? Perhaps you need more bedrooms or a designated office room? Why not redistribute space and install a smart new kitchen in your current living space, freeing up an entire room? Do you need to squeeze in an en-suite bathroom or remove a bath for a spacious shower?

BEDROOM OR BOUDOIR? Evaluate if your bed location is correct and look at your headboard – the new trend is for a much higher headboard with pendant lights either side of the bed, creating a clutter-free bedside table. Do you have enough wardrobe space? A good set of quality bed linen brings me joy and it’s always nice to step out of bed onto a rug at this time of the year.

LIGHTING – BRING IN THE LIGHT This is an important factor as good lighting provides ambience. You may decide some areas need more, especially corners and corridors. Conversely, you might need more shade and have a window with strong sun streaming in and need a good set of blinds with an easy operating mechanism.

KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS Yes, they are fashion items and can quickly date a property.

Kitchens are now much simpler in design and a good-value kitchen is readily available. You might require fewer storage cupboards or a new work top counter? Designing bathrooms is a love of mine and I like to introduce a comfortable chair and transform the space into feeling like a room rather than a utility space.

OUTDOOR LIVING We live in one of the best climates in Europe so plan to get the most from these areas. Is more shade needed, or perhaps outdoor heating devices? How is your outdoor furniture holding up? Do you need new covers? What about plants, or would you like a living wall?

TEMPERATURE CONTROL Although we don’t have really cold weather here, it certainly feels cold when it rains. I find hot air blowing as a method of heating that is dry and uncomfortable. Perhaps consider laying an electric under-floor heating system. With regards to your air-conditioning system in general, don’t forget to change the filters.

Lexus Take a New

OCEAN ROUTE To Luxury Cruising

Best known for their high-end cars, Lexus have now moved in a new direction – off the road and out onto the high seas. Towards the end of 2019, the Japanese premium auto manufacturer unveiled its first luxury yacht: the 65-foot Lexus LY 650, with a starting price of just under $4 million.

The newly presented yacht brings together advanced technology and craftsmanship, top cruising performance and luxury styling to, according to Lexus, “provide an irreplaceable experience that stimulates the senses and exceeds owner expectations, even at sea, (with) exquisite attention to detail and anticipatory hospitality applied in every possible aspect”.

The shape of the hull, its abundant stern volume and the model’s stunning curved lines provide the LY 650 with a distinctive exterior styling. Lexus’s collaboration with Italian yacht design studio Nuvolari Lenard has produced an innovative style and comfortable interior living space.

The yacht rides on a light and highly rigid composite hull that combines CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced plastic) and GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced

plastic), and was jointly developed with Marquis Yachts LLC. Additionally, the LY 650 is equipped with LY-Link, an advanced connectivity technology for boating that shares timely information and provides control of various yacht functions.

According to Akio Toyoda, president of the Toyota Motor Corporation (Lexus is Toyota’s luxury car division), “The LY 650 symbolises the challenge taken

by Lexus, which aspires to be a true luxury lifestyle brand, to venture beyond the automobile. A collaborative team between Toyota and Marquis Yachts introduced the Toyota Production System to the boat manufacturing facility to improve productivity and quality. This allowed the Lexus ‘crafted’ philosophy of anticipatory hospitality and meticulous attention to detail to become a reality in the form of a luxury yacht.

KEY FEATURES OF THE LY 650 The flybridge cruiser retains the vibrant form and curved lines of the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept – both elegant and sporty. Its strong and pronounced bow and dynamic hull, with one of the widest beams in its class, are complemented by a coupé-like roofline and accentuated aft hips.

The premiere yacht features an optional two-tone color scheme that highlights its form and captures the image of the Lexus Sports Yacht Concept from 2017. Metallic accents on the bow, side windows and L-shaped air intakes create the iconic image of a Lexus yacht.

The interior fuses advanced design and “omotenashi” (“Japanese hospitality that sincerely and warm-heartedly anticipates and fulfills people’s needs”) in pursuit of high quality that is distinctively Lexus. The bright, white-themed interior space highlights a sense of openness, while the use of curving lines and creative lighting provides a comfortable sense of envelopment.

The salon’s efficient layout features dual captain’s seats and sofas set forward and a galley set aft. Below the salon are three elegant berths with more than two metres of headroom, each with a private head with shower.

The powertrain features twin Volvo Penta IPS engines (1350/1200/1050). By integrating these with an underwater hull shape achieved through the application of computational fluid dynamics modelling, Lexus was able to achieve not only high output and low fuel consumption but also exceptional cruising stability and maneuverability. The LY 650 also has an array of piloting-support functions, including joystick control, fixed-point position-holding at sea and auto-flap function.

The underwater hull and upper part of the hull are constructed of CFRP for lightness and high rigidity. Sandwich panels with excellent soundproofing qualities are used in the main walls to help ensure exceptional quietness for uninterrupted conversation.

LY-Link technology can be used to monitor the vessel and have notifications sent via text message should an abnormality be detected. It also enables users to remotely switch on and off components such as the yacht’s air-conditioning system and lights via a smartphone.

The captain’s seat features a stylish instrument panel with touchscreen operation; while a custom Mark Levinson Surround Sound System with subwoofer system creates an immersive concert hall-like acoustic space in the salon.

Tourism authorities often note that one of the many attractive aspects of the Costa del Sol’s location is its proximity to ski slopes. Barely a two-hour drive from the coast, in Granada province, is Sierra Nevada: home to the highest peak in Spain (Mulhacén at 3,479 metres above sea level) and one of Europe’s most southerly ski resorts.

This means Costa del Sol residents and visitors can, theoretically, enjoy a morning swim in the Mediterranean then head to the pistes for an afternoon ski.

Of course, in practice, many people would prefer to spread out these pursuits over a longer period, and ideally stay in Granada. Especially at this time of the year, when skiing conditions are optimum.

Rated very highly on Tripadvisor, this family-run business offers humble authentic Italian cuisine in a cosy and contemporary environment. Owners Patricia and Andy Cavaciuti, with daughter Stephanie, provide a warm welcome when you arrive at their restaurant, making you feel immediately at ease – as if you’ve just walked into their own home.

They designed the restaurant themselves so all around you can see their personal décor touches, including a novel flooring idea in the bathrooms made entirely from pennies (in the ladies’) and bottle tops (in the men’s). You will also notice a functioning pasta-making machine at the entrance of the restaurant which gets good use every day.

Their new chef, who you can see working meticulously in the open kitchen located at the end of the restaurant, has created an uncomplicated menu that is packed with flavour. There is a balanced and wide range of starters available, such as tricolore salad, beef carpaccio, bruschetta, melon and Parma ham, minestrone soup and much more. For the main courses, there is no pizza on the menu but there are tasty risottos, ossobuco and the like; and, of course, a wide range of pasta dishes. When it comes to the pastas, their dining concept is to choose a preferred condiment from the menu and then pick a type of pasta that would go well with it – the staff are very happy to help out with any suggestions.

Their desserts are worth saving space for! Their tiramisu is a popular favourite among regular diners, as is their panna cotta, but there are plenty of other indulgent options to choose from that are beautifully presented on the plate. There is a good selection of wines available at very reasonable prices, as well as beers, soft drinks and cocktails from the bar.

Post-Festive Period Recipes

Helle’s Salad Ideas Now is the time when most of us have had plenty of fat food. After all the extra kilos that mysteriously sneak into our lives after the cold months, we are ready to make an effort, to start being healthier in the New Year, with the bikini season around the corner – and that doesn’t always mean being boring or fat-frightened.

That’s why I’ve created a few ideas for your salad variations that I hope are to your taste. Try to toast your favourite chopped nuts on a dry pan and sprinkle them on top of your salad. Some of my favourites are walnuts, cashews, pecans, almonds, pistachios and hazelnuts. Also try pumpkin seeds toasted with maldon salt, sunflower seeds toasted with a little soya, and dry-roasted sesame seeds or pine nuts.

Don’t forget to give colour and variation to your salads, so it awakes your appetite even more. It doesn’t always just have to be vegetables. For example, pomegranate seeds, figs, peaches, oranges and apples are a nice fresh touch.

As for cheeses, I highly recommend crumbled gorgonzola, feta or Parmesan, or a little honey-baked goat’s cheese on top of the salad.

Freshly-chopped parsley, basil, chives, thyme or oregano directly from the kitchen garden is always delicious and incredibly healthy. Also try the delicious watercress and bean sprouts. As an alternative, you can also use fresh sage. It’s a spice that doesn’t work very well with raw ingredients but, if you toast the leaves in a little butter, olive oil and lemon juice you also have the dressing ready for the salad. The dressing is brilliant for pasta salad as well.

Delicious Pickled Red Onions 1 kg. fresh and organic red onions 200 ml. apple cider vinegar 200 g. sugar 1 tbsp. salt 2 tbsp. whole red rose peppercorns 2 bay leaves It is actually very easy to make some delicious treats for the refrigerator, and here is one of the fast ones which is guaranteed to be repeated after you get started.

Put the apple cider vinegar in a small saucepan, add sugar, salt, rose pepper and bay leaves, and give it all a little boil until the sugar dissolves.

Clean the red onions and cut them into fine slices or boats, as you prefer.

Put the raw red onions into glass jars and pour the warm vinegar mixture above. Stir a few times, so the vinegar mixes well with the red onions; this also helps the onions lose more liquid. When you are done put the jars in the fridge.

Pickled red onion can be enjoyed from the first day and lasts for a long time in the refrigerator. You can also add more red onion in the glass to take advantage of the vinegar mix – when the glass is nearly empty.

Rueda Wine is Different

A new phrase entered Spanish drinking language recently: “Un Rueda por favor” (the “por favor” is optional, depending on the speaker’s background).

Such a term was never used previously for a white wine, in spite of the fact that it has always been normal to ask for a “Rioja” or a “Ribera del Duero” when ordering a red.

What makes Rueda wines so interesting is that the original white grape variety of the Rueda region is verdejo, and it develops in the same way as the palomino grape used to make sherry since time immemorial. Once cut from the vine it oxidises.

This was exactly what the drinkers of the 17th century preferred, and half of the production was sent to Madrid – until the phylloxera bug wiped out all of Spain’s vineyards in the last quarter of the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th. The only way to recover was by planting resistant vines that took so many years to get into production that Rueda wines lost their market, and it looked as if the long love affair was finally over.

Past and present Rueda wineries have been criticised for over-commercialising the product, in rather the same way as sherry producers did during the last decades of the 20th century. In fact no-one took Rueda wines seriously until bodegas from other established areas came calling. The Marqués de Riscal winery was the first. It was looking for somewhere to produce a white wine that could complement its famous Rioja red, and the verdejo grape fitted the bill, although later the sauvignon blanc also became established.

One of the first complications was to eliminate the characteristic that had made the verdejo-based wines so popular all those centuries ago – the grape’s habit of oxidising on picking. To avoid this, present-day grape harvests commence many hours before sunrise using artificial light.

From the moment the grapes are loaded into pallets for transporting to the presses, nitrogen gas is blown over them. Once at the winery they are transferred to sealed tanks and once again subjected to continual blasts of nitrogen to prevent contact with the air.

After pressing, the resulting must is similarly treated, as is the fermented wine, until the moment it is sealed in bottles. Only in this way can the delicate crispness of the verdejo grape be preserved in its natural state.

In addition to the verdejo and sauvignon blanc varieties, other grapes used are palomino fino and viura. The wines have become popular outside Spain and 20 per cent of the region’s production is exported to 30 countries. It is significant that even French wine producers ( for example, Belondrade-Lurton from Bordeaux) have established bodegas in the area.

When looking for a bottle of white Rueda in your local wine store, bear in mind that it is graded according to quality. The Rueda Superior is the best, followed by Rueda, which tends to be younger; then come Rueda Pálido and Rueda Dorado. These last two are what is known as generosos, being aged for three to four years in oak casks to achieve a higher alcoholic content and a darker colour, something like old sherry. Everyday drinking Rueda is fine, but for a special occasion choose Rueda Superior.

The Marqués de Riscal white Rueda is as good as any with which to start (the label actually says “Herederos de...” / “Descendants of...”). This is an exceptional white wine, with a clean distinct flavour and enough body to satisfy anyone.

The Rueda Superior and Marqués de Riscal Reserva Limousin are excellent.

Anyone familiar with Ribera del Duero reds will probably have tasted Yllera wines, although for the sake of a few kilometres they cannot use the official denomination of the region. They are produced in Rueda. Los Curros’ white Ruedas are true DO wines, and excellent. The award-winning Viña Cantosan is an outstanding buy at around €8.50, and the Viña Cantosan aged in oak costs about €8. Mantel Blanco Rueda Superior from Álvarez y Díez is indeed a superior wine and worth the €9.50 price tag.

Fine Wining Many otherwise excellent restaurants have very tired wine lists. We see nothing new or exciting, just the same old wines that have been around forever. However there are some notable exceptions, and in this column the aim is to highlight them and incentivise their efforts.

MAISON LU This is a new restaurant in Marbella that concentrates on typical French cuisine with an Andalucian touch. Chef Juanlu Fernández has a Michelin star restaurant in Jerez, the only one ever. The rotisserie section concentrates on pigeon, duck, cockerel, etc. The wine list is exceptional and among Marbella’s best, particularly strong on champagnes and sherries, with an ample French selection, and other varieties from most wine-producing countries. Prices are on the high side but not excessively so for such an outstanding offer.

WALK YOUR WAY to health

Humans are among the few animals that are habitually bipedal: that is, we walk on two feet. There are many advantages to being able to walk, not least allowing our hands to be free to carry objects, but the health benefits of walking are themselves an amazing achievement.

We all know that walking, or enough of it, confers significant cardiovascular benefits, but walking also has positive effects on our mental health. One review study from Kings College London showed that walking briskly for just 20 minutes a day cuts your risk of getting depression by one third.

Other studies have shown that a similar amount of walking improves cognitive function and reaction time. And, if you are struggling to find your creative juices, going for a walk beforehand can increase a person’s creativity by 60 per cent.

Walking also encourages the release of endorphins (our feel good hormones) and other important brain hormones such as Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). BDNF is essential for neuronal development and survival. In fact, deregulation of BDNF is associated with Alzheimer’s disease so walking may help to reduce our risk of dementia too. All in all, walking is a serious superpower. It’s easy to do, cheap and available to all of us, which makes it all the

more shocking that so few of us do enough. The World Health Organisation recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week, and this can be easily accrued through brisk walking (walking at a speed sufficient to get you a little out of breath). Appallingly, a recent survey of people between 40 and 60 years of age showed that a whopping 40 per cent did not perform even a bare minimum of 10 minutes per month of brisk walking. However, there is a new app that’s been developed to help us achieve at least 10 minutes of brisk walking a day – called Active 10. This is a really simple phone app that records how much walking you do in a day and importantly how much of that is brisk. Why not give the app a go and start to harness some of these powerful health benefits?

NEW DEVICE WITH POTENTIAL FOR RAPID AND PAINLESS DELIVERY OF MEDICATIONS A team of investigators in the US has developed a skin patch that efficiently delivers medication within one minute to attack melanoma cells. The device, which has been tested in mice and human skin samples, could be adapted to deliver a host of medicines and vaccines.

Topical ointments can impart medications to the skin, but they can only penetrate a small distance through it. While syringes are an effective drug delivery mode, they can be painful. Microneedle patches, prepared with a layer-by-layer coating method, are one easy, pain-free way to administer treatment.

Paula T. Hammond, PhD, along with her colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, vaccinated mice with their patches, and compared the results with intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. The microneedle treatment produced nine times the antibody level compared to intramuscular injections, such as those used for flu shots; and 160 times the antibody level compared to subcutaneous injections, such as those used for the measles vaccines. They also saw efficient immune activation in surgical samples of human skin.

“Our patch technology could be used to deliver vaccines to combat different infectious diseases,” said Hammond. “But we are excited by the possibility that the patch is another tool in the oncologists’ arsenal against cancer, specifically melanoma.”

To make a melanoma vaccine, the researchers developed an antigen that includes a marker frequently overexpressed by melanoma cells, as well as an adjuvant, which creates a generalised danger signal for the immune system and boosts its response.

EATING NUTS MAY PRODUCE A HIDDEN HEALTH BENEFIT Eating nuts at least twice a week appears to be associated with a 17 per cent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, according to a new study out of Iran. Researchers examined the association between nut consumption and the risk of cardiovascular disease and death in the Iranian population.

A total of 5,432 adults aged 35 and older, with no history of cardiovascular disease were randomly selected from urban and rural areas of the Isfahan, Arak and Najafabad counties. Their intake of nuts including walnuts, almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts and seeds was assessed in 2001 with a validated food frequency questionnaire.

“Nuts are a good source of unsaturated fat and contain little saturated fat,” said study author Dr. Noushin Mohammadifard, of Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Institute in Iran. “They also have protein, minerals, vitamins, fibre, phytosterols and polyphenols which benefit heart health. European and US studies have related nuts with cardiovascular protection but there is limited evidence from the eastern Mediterranean region.”

Participants or family members were interviewed every two years until 2013 for the occurrence of cardiovascular events and death. The specific outcomes investigated were coronary heart disease, stroke, total cardiovascular disease, death from any cause and death from cardiovascular disease. During a median 12-year follow-up, there were 751 cardiovascular events (594 coronary heart disease and 157 strokes), 179 cardiovascular deaths and 458 all-cause deaths.

Eating nuts two or more times per week was associated with a 17 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular mortality compared to consuming nuts once every two weeks. The connection was robust even after adjusting for factors that could influence the relationship such as age, sex, education, smoking and physical activity. “Raw fresh nuts are the healthiest,” added Dr Mohammadifard. Some nutritionists advocate eating up to two ounces (60 grams) of nuts on most days of the week.

MÁLAGA’S ICONIC

CERVANTES THEATRE Celebrates 150th Anniversary

The venerable showpiece of Málaga’s rich cultural agenda – Teatro Cervantes – is in a celebratory mood this year. The theatre was inaugurated on 17 December 1970, and throughout 2020 the milestone will be commemorated with a programme of open-door presentations, exhibitions, galas, concerts and other shows. Its sister Teatro Echegaray will also host a series of events

during the year. Detailed information about the scheduled anniversary programme and bookings at: www.teatrocervantes.com In the meantime, below is a summarised historical account of the theatre’s creation and development, presented by Teatro Cervantes in preparation for the anniversary year…

THEATRE HISTORY In the second half of the 19th century, a fire almost completely destroyed the Teatro de la Libertad ( formerly the Príncipe Alfonso), which had been inaugurated to mark a royal visit to Málaga by Queen Isabella II. A prominent group of supporters with strong ties to the city’s artistic and cultural life decided to give the city a new home for the performing arts, while also satisfying the evolving leisure demands of the local middle classes.

City architect Gerónimo Cuervo was commissioned to lead the project, helped by a painter from Valencia and Málaga resident, Bernardo Ferrandiz, and together they designed the building’s décor. Later, with the construction schedule becoming more urgent, they sought help from another painter, Antonio Muñoz Degrain.

Ferrandiz was commissioned to paint the main curtain drape (on which he included a self-portrait of himself as Mephistopheles) and the theatre ceiling.

For the latter, he painted an allegory of the city, including a figure representing the fine arts in the centre of the canvas, surrounded by different aspects of the city’s economy, which at the time was booming: agriculture, pottery, industry, transport, fishing and its strategic location as a trading port.

This economic development had given rise to a new wealthy social class who were keen to promote the city’s culture by building a temple to the arts.

GRAND OPENING Work on the new theatre was undertaken from April to November 1870. The grand opening took place on 17 December with a concert version of the opera William Tell by Gioacchino Rossini. The local press highlighted the theatre’s capacity (2,300 to 2,400 people), the exceptional stage dimensions and the building’s ornamentation. Unquestionably, however, the building’s most notable feature was its spatial design. Not long after its opening, the Teatro Miguel de Cervantes was formally declared a “Historical and Artistic Monument”.

Over the years the building underwent a series of changes that altered its appearance, but indifference and neglect almost led it to being reduced to ruins. In 1950, the theatre was in a serious state of decay. Its facilities were adapted to comply with the prevailing legislation and a series of works were carried out that seriously altered its design, layout and architectural elements. A bar and a projection booth were set up in the building’s interior and its activities were reduced to showing films.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY Málaga’s Teatro Cervantes is highly regarded for offering an extensive and diverse array of activities. “Meeting the demands and interests of Málaga citizens, whatever their age, social status, education, cultural background or other characteristics or distinguishing aspects, is our one and only goal. This is the premise we start from when we design our programme of events.

“We work to respond effectively to the application of a global cultural model based on pluralism, rigour and quality. In this sense, we do not distance ourselves from any specific genres, trends or new theatrical currents that are constantly appearing, developing and transforming the international artistic scene.

“There is room for everyone and everything on our stage, because what happens on stage is nothing more than a complex but faithful image of evolution and social tastes. It is also a way of preventing the classics from losing ground and falling into oblivion, by encouraging their permanent relevance.”

Shows programmed at the Teatro Cervantes are listed according to the standard theatre genre classification – opera, music, theatre and dance – all of which are further divided into a multitude of variations that often are brought together in different combinations, “producing results which can be difficult to describe with standard labels”. The present day cultural schedule is “unflagging, hybrid and, to a certain extent, anarchic”.

MAJOR RECONSTRUCTION In 1984, Malaga City Council acquired the Teatro Cervantes and financed work to reconstruct the building, supported by other government subsidies. The new theatre, with capacity for 1,171, divided into stalls, boxes and gallery seats, was officially opened on 6 April 1987, with Queen Sofía among those enjoying a concert by the Málaga City Symphonic Orchestra.

That same year, Teatro Cervantes won the Europa Nostra Award (UNESCO) for its meticulous restoration work, and was considered the “Best Andalucian Restoration” in 1987.

In 2005 Teatro Cervantes was registered in the Andalucian Historical Heritage General Catalogue as a “Property of Cultural Interest” (monuments category).

In 2002 an acoustic shell was designed and installed on the stage, improving the sound for symphonic concerts and musical recitals, while the ceiling was restored in 2005. The next major modification, for musical performances, was in 2008, with the installation of a hydraulic platform on the stage. This allowed for three different stage layouts: one with an orchestra pit for operas, zarzuelas and musicals; a second with a platform at the stalls level for conventional performances; and a third one with a platform at stage level to enlarge it.

In 2011, in collaboration with the City Council’s universal accessibility department, a lift and a hearing induction loop for users with hearing aids were installed in the theatre, as well as a new signage system featuring pictograms, easy-to-read lettering and Braille.

MUSEO PICASSO MÁLAGA

A Genealogical History of Visual Art

Málaga’s Picasso Museum launches its 2020 programming with with a genealogical retrospective of the history of visual art.

From 26 February to 31 May, authors from the 17th to 21st century will visually present the history of art in an exhibition featuring genealogical trees, allegories, tables and diagrams. One of the diagrams is represented in three dimensions, with works by Picasso, Cézanne, Matisse, Kandinsky, Mondrian and Brancusi, among others. Co-produced by the Juan March Foundation and Museo Picasso Málaga, the exhibition deals with visual narratives of art history from a specific museum point of view.

“If art history is made up of objects intended to be seen,” note the organisers, “shouldn’t the way it is related also be very visual? In reality, the textual and abstract narrative has prevailed over the visual and concrete. This exhibition, “Art Genealogies–Or the History of Art as Visual Art”, aims to compensate for this by displaying the different visual ways these stories can be told.”

METAMORPHOSIS BY MIQUEL BARCELÓ Subsequently, from 22 June to 27 September, Miquel Barceló will present “Metamorphosis”, a wide selection of ceramics, oils and watercolours that “rediscover the artist’s inexhaustible energy and eagerness to experiment, as the creator of a personal, original and complex work”.

Metamorphosis takes its name from Franz Kafka’s famous story published in 1915, and presents 100 works by Miquel Barceló created between 2015 and

2020, including paintings, works on paper, ceramics, notebooks and bronzes.

The central aspect of the exhibition is a selection of more than 30 ceramics “characterised by their color and presenting forms in constant transformation – lacerated, fragmented and perforated – in which figurative elements that refer to plants and aquatic beings appear, suggesting tongues, petals, fins or leaves, and sometimes with anthropomorphic features”.

MERET OPPENHEIM: REFLECTION OF AN ERA In autumn (19 October to 7 February) the museum presents an exhibition of Meret Oppenheim’s diverse works, “a creative woman who managed to integrate herself as a member of the surrealist movement, achieving a significant role in the artistic world of 20th century European art”.

More than 30 years after Oppenheim’s death (1985), this will be her first retrospective in Spain, with works covering almost half a century of activity and referring to all her artistic periods.

The 120 works include paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, fashion design, jewellery and furniture, plus photographs and documents that showcase her forays into theatre, cinema and poetry.

Best in Europe Award for Architects

The Bright development company won both “Best in Spain” and “Best in Europe” in the “Architecture Single Residence” category at the finals of the International Property Awards held at The Savoy in London.

Their entry, Villa Alcuzcuz, located in the hills above San Pedro, is “the Coast’s first luxury environmentally friendly home built to Passive House Regulations and Standards, guaranteeing more than 75 per cent saving on energy costs compared with a standard new build”.

UDesign Architecture Studio are the creative force behind the Bright brand. “We’re very excited about this win, because it’s a win for the entire architecture and design sector in southern Spain,” said Jason Harris

New Mortgage Law In Spain Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants

MORTGAGE CONSTITUTION EXPENSES The new mortgage law in Spain (article 14) establishes a varied distribution of expenses and taxes at the time the mortgage is set up.

From the banking entity/creditor: expenses derived from the notary, registry, agency, tax on documented legal acts and copy of the deed.

From the consumer: valuation costs and copy of mortgage title deed in Spain.

DISAPPEARANCE OF “FLOOR CLAUSES” The new regulation repeals any reference to downward limits on interest rates (Article 21.3), for which credit agreements contracted with variable interest will not have “floor clauses”.

EARLY AMORTISATION CLAUSES The new law reduces commissions derived from early repayment of the credit, whether partial or total.

Spanish credit agreements with fixed interest – commission for early repayment: · 2%, if the amortisation occurs during the first 10 years. · 1.5% during the rest of the time.

Spanish credit agreements with variable interest – commission may be agreed between the parties: · 0.25%, during the first three years. · 0.15% the first five years.

EARLY EXPIRY CLAUSES The creditor may consider the credit due in advance when the following requirements concur:

a) The consumer is in default for the payment of a portion of the credit or interest capital. b) The amount of overdue and un-met instalments equals at least: · 3% of the credit granted, within the first half of the duration of the credit or the equivalent of non-payment of 12 monthly instalments. · 7% of the credit granted, within the second half of the loan, or the equivalent of non-payment of 15 monthly instalments. c) The creditor has required payment by the consumer by granting a period of at least one month for compliance and warning that, if it is not adhered to, the creditor will claim the total repayment due on the credit.

DOCUMENTATION AND GUARANTEES FOR INDIVIDUALS The creditor must provide to the consumer the following documents before granting the credit agreement: · European Standardised Information Sheet (ESIS), which has a binding offer for a minimum period of 10 days. · Standardised Warning Sheet for a mortgage in Spain. The creditor will also deliver this document, which includes information about the mortgage clauses, rates, interest, expenses, payment periods, etc.

The consumer must appear at least twice before the notary. The first time is at least one day before the signing of the credit agreement with the mortgage title deed, when the notary will advise them ( for free), sign a questionnaire and draw up a minutes document in which the notary states that the consumer has been duly informed and advised. The second appearance before the notary will be to grant the credit and mortgage title deed.

Note that those foreigners who want to arrange a credit agreement in Spain will have to appear before a notary on two different days.
