Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine’s convocation. As you know, these are not typical times. Far from it, like all of you, we are striving to adapt to this new remote existence. This includes convening for our first ever virtual convocation ceremony. It is a new experience for all of us and we kindly ask for your understanding.

Our History In 1965, the University of South Florida was granted a charter to build a medical school and the first dean, Dr. Donn Smith was appointed a year later.

An entrepreneur and a previous dean at Other institutions, Dr. Smith had what it took To take charge of a budding medical school.

He quickly got to work on setting key foundations for the medical school, recruiting scholars from across the nation and establishing affiliations across the entire Tampa Bay Area.

Among the initial faculty was the esteemed Dr. Roy Behnke from the University of Indiana. There he served as Chief of the Medical Service of the Veterans Administration Hospital. Attracted by the charisma, vision and dedication displayed by Dr. Smith, Dr. Behnke also put forth relentless devotion. His primary contribution was the establishment of the Internal Medicine Department with the commitment to provide thorough and diverse education for the medical students, the residents, and faculty.

The founding Division Directors began with the recruitment of Dr. Steven Glasser in Cardiology and Dr. Allan Goldman in Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Glasser and Dr. Goldman trained at Walter Reed. Dr. Sam Bukantz was recruited in Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Juergen Nord and H. Worth Boyce were recruited in Gastroenterology and Dr. Hussain Saba and Dr. Bill Dinwoodie were recruited in Hematology and Oncology. Dr. Charles Craig, trained by Dr. Jack Myers, the father of computer medicine, soon joined from University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Craig brought substantial federal grants and he was recruited along with Dr. Richard Lockey,

Allergy and Immunology, who still serves as Division Director for the division for over 35 years. Dr. Phil Altus was also recruited shortly thereafter as the first Program Director of General Internal Medicine Residency and served in that role until his retirement.

By the time the first class entered their third year, faculty were in place for Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Neurology (then a part of medicine), Hematology/Oncology, Cardiology, Allergy, Rheumatology, Nephrology, and General Internal Medicine. These initial divisions have grown to a total of over 160 residents and fellows in training. Divisions of Geriatrics/Palliative Care, Dermatology, and Endocrinology were added.

One year after the USF’s Medical School opened its doors to the charter class in 1971, Dr. Behnke was appointed Chair of Internal Medicine. He sculpted the program to offer a wide breadth of training programs so that students, regardless of what they wished to practice, would have the option of staying in Tampa without compromising their aspirations. Dr. Behnke also wanted to promote research and, in doing so, elevate the academic level of the institution. He worked tirelessly with Dr. Smith to establish relations with the new James A. Haley VA Hospital as well as Tampa General Hospital. His hard work and perseverance was recognized in 1980 when he was Governor for Florida for the American College of Physician (ACP). As governor, he opened a chapter in Florida, drastically increasing the number of members and participation in the organization and raising the awareness and scholarly activity across Florida.

In 1986, the USF Cancer Research Center, now the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, opened. It established a home for ground-breaking research in the field and provided best practices clinical care.

After a very productive career, Dr. Roy Behnke retired in 1994, and Dr. Allan Goldman became the new Chair of Internal Medicine. The two scholars had worked closely and Dr. Goldman shared the similar values of education, professionalism, and humanism as his predecessor and wished to keep those values as the core principles of the department. He prized education above all, feeling that this is truly what distinguishes a medical school from other hospital systems. Under his leadership, the Internal Medicine department continued to expand.

In 2008, a $67 million world class USF Health Morsani Center for Advanced Health care was opened. The Internal Medicine program became well known for the team-based, top-quality patient care that is provided by students, residents, and physicians. In addition to providing quality care to patients, the program also aimed to place the priority on the values and concerns of the students, residents, and physicians. It is the pride of the USF Internal Medicine Department that it places our trainees at the top, making changes accordingly to address the issues.

Our History On December 1, 2012 John T. Sinnott, MD, James P. Cullison Professor of Medicine, was appointed Chair of Department of Internal Medicine after Dr. Allan Goldman’s retirement. Dr. Sinnott is the third Chair of Internal Medicine in 46 years at USF Morsani College of Medicine. Dr. Sinnott‘s charge as Chair was to “build a world class program.” Formerly, he was Director of the Florida Infectious Disease Institute and former Associate Dean of USF Medicine International.

In patient care, he focused on establishing specialty Centers of Excellence. He started with a lung transplant program with certification for Advanced Lung Disease under Dr. Kapil Patel and Dr. Mark Rumbak. He established the Hospitalist Program at Tampa General Hospital with Dr. Edwards. In 2019, he helped Dr. Richter and Dr. Marchionni- Beery establish a Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and integrated the former Department of Cardiovascular Science back in as a Division within the Department of Internal Medicine with the recruitment of Dr. Oliveira.

Dr. Sinnott has prioritized growth of fundamental research within the Department of Internal Medicine. Beginning with Dr. Jeffrey Krischer’s appointment as Vice Chair of Research and Director of the Health Informatics Institute, whose research efforts formed the cornerstone of our inchoate research group. New researchers soon followed with the internationally famous Drs. Kim, Cui and Michael White in infectious diseases and Dr. McDonald in cardiology.

This team collaborated with the COPH to build an interdisciplinary research initiative which is strengthening during the COVID pandemic. Dr. Christian Brechot of the Pasteur Institute was recruited to launch our microbiome research center. Dr. Sinnott also continued to support teaching with Dr. O’Brien and Dr. Mai (later followed by Dr. Kellee Oller as Program Director). We have added to our resident curriculum, with new inpatient and ambulatory experiences (procedure rotations, ultrasound, HIV, Homeless Medicine, addiction medicine, and Quality Improvement in all sites). We have increased our engagement and service within vulnerable populations of Tampa by setting up a Refugee Clinic, Tampa Bay Street Medicine, IM Cares-Departmental Wellness Program and TGH Healthpark as a continuity clinic to improve access for underinsured patients in our community. In 2020, Tampa General Hospital approved the building an Infection Disease Hospital which will include community and underserved medicine aspects.

Dr. Joe Lezama, Dr Jeff Krischer and Dr. Asa Oxner serve as Vice Chairs who are critical to our success. Dr Lezama works with trainees directly and is also Chief of Medicine at the James A Haley VA Hospital. Our Vice Chairs are vital in supporting the faculty and in maintaining the high level of scholarly activity throughout all of the hospital and outpatient sites of the Internal Medicine Program.

Amongst the accomplishments of this team are the following: In teaching we are at top 4% of the AAMC UME Ranking (96.3%); Board pass rate of graduating residents is at 99% (3-year average); US News & World Report ranked our programs at TGH as Gastroenterology (24); Nephrology (18); Primary Care (67); and Pulmonary earned an honorable mention.

We look forward to having each of you as our new colleagues. We know you will carry forth the USF brand with excellence and curiosity in this new world. You have surmounted challenges and shown resilience, excitement, and advocacy during the world’s transition to distance learning and telemedicine, evolution of our scientific understanding of genomics with host-viral interactions, and the struggle for equity in healthcare.

Embarking on a journey which began some time ago, how could you have imagined all the things you’d come to know.

You learned to use each challenge as an opportunity To overcome each problem—despite adversity.

It wasn’t always easy to keep up the pace, to deal with overnight calls, milestones, duty hours and logs, but you held on tight to your beliefs and kept them all through med school.

You found your voice & chose a path that honors who you are,

And that excellence in patient care, may be your greatest lesson learned so far. For no one could be prouder of the person you’ve become, And that is why we are confident that the best is yet to come.
