Welcome to your new home

Tariffs

Am I on the right tariff?

Lighting and power

Standard tariff: Single 24-hour rate suitable for those who don’t regularly use electricity to heat their home or water.

Super Economy 12 : Two-rate tariff with a lower rate available for a 12-hour period each day (a 10-hour period during the night and a 2-hour period during the day). ‘Normal rate’

applies for the remaining 12 hours. Save money and reduce your reliance on the power station by moving some electricity usage to your overnight times.

Types of heating tariff

Superheat: A tariff that is available 24/7 exclusively for electric panel heaters, electric boilers, and electric underfloor heating.

Super Economy 12: Storage heaters, water heating and towel rails use this tariff meaning you can take advantage of your low-rate times.

Heat Pump: Exclusively for air source heat pumps.

Tip: Your electrical appliances will cost significantly less to run during your low-rate time bands. And, if you charge and use some appliances between 11pm and 5am, you’ll also be using 100% renewable imported electricity - take strain off your bill AND the power station.

I’m already on Super Economy

12 Tariff. Will my low-rate times still be the same?

Your new time bands may be different as they are assigned to the property, not the person. This is because different times help spread electricity usage across Guernsey during quieter periods. Check if your property’s time bands have been printed on the meter box and if not, please give us a call.

Check your time bands on the reverse side of your bill under ‘Electricity Billing Calculations.’

Is your property on Standard Tariff?

Save money by changing to Super Economy 12 by applying online - or call us for a paper form.

Where does our electricity come from?

We import over 90% of our electricity annually from renewable sources in Europe including hydro, wind and solar power via a sub-sea cable. The rest is topped up using on-island diesel generation at the Vale power station and community solar arrays.

www.electricity.gg/sustainability

Tip: Switch off standby - it could be costing you over £65 a year. You can buy standby savers that turn all your appliances off standby in one go. Some come with timers and others come with a single off-switch.

Bills Need to discuss your account?

We can only speak to the person named on our records. If there is someone else you wish to add to discuss your account – such as a spouse, friend, relative or carer – please call us and we’ll send you the necessary form.

When will I receive my first bill?

Most people receive electricity bills four times a year.

Receive your bills by email

Save money and help the environment. If you haven’t already, sign up for e-billing today.

Please note: Any credit/debit balance on your final statement will carry forward to the first statement in your new home.

I haven’t received my final bill from my previous property

You should receive this within 30 days of moving out by post or email, depending on your chosen communication preference. If you don’t, please contact us.

What if I receive estimated bills here?

Most of the island’s meters automatically transmit readings to us, but sometimes signals don’t reach us. Estimated bills are then calculated using the property’s previous usage patterns. ‘Estimated Statement’ will be clearly marked on the top right-hand side of your bill. For accurate bills, please submit a meter reading so you’re only billed for electricity you’ve used.

Do I need to change my standing order?

Your bank will continue to pay your standing order until you instruct them to amend or stop it. We can’t do it for you.

If this property is larger, has electric heating, or if you have additional electrical appliances, we recommend increasing your standing order. Please contact us after a month to review your consumption and we’ll advise a new standing order amount if needed.

I’m a new customer, how do I set up a standing order?

Just give us a call and we’ll recommend a monthly amount, or complete the Standing

Order form on the back of your statement if you know how much to pay.

How can I pay my bill?

Please always quote the payment reference number starting with IS on your statement.

Online: www.electricity.gg/payonline

Standing order or bank transfer - directly with your bank or via your online banking.

Account details:

Sort Code: 20-35-32

Account Name: Guernsey Electricity Ltd

Account Number: 10999776

Reference: Please quote the number found on your bill beginning with IS

You can also pay by telephone, at the Post Office, or by cheque.

What happens to the balance on my old property?

The balance on your final statement is shown on the first statement for your new property. If it has not carried forward please contact us.

Tip: Try an alternative to your oven - Using an air fryer to cook two or three meals a week could save you up to £250 a year. Microwaves are more efficient than ovens as they only heat the food and not the air space inside.

Pay as you go customers

Will I automatically have a pay as you go meter?

By default it will always be a credit meter. To have a pay-as-you-go meter installed, please contact us quoting your customer reference. It could take a few days if we also need to change your meter.

Where can I top up my pay as you go card?

Candie Cache Stores

Jeffreys Garage

Iceland – the Bridge

Checkers Express – Landes du Marche and Collings Road

Co-Op - the Market and Forest

The previous occupant left their prepayment card, can I use it?

Each prepayment card is specific to a customer and a meter and can’t be used by a different person or in a different property.

How to spend significantly less

Average customers on a Super Economy

12 tariff use 48% of their electricity during low rate times and 52% during normal rate. We recommend this as a benchmark for your home and will confirm your actual percentages on the back of your bill. Try to only use some appliances during low-rate times to cost you significantly less.

Appliances you can control during your low-rate times

Washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, hoover, iron, electric car charging point. www.electricity.gg/energycalculator

Tip:
If you’re on a Pay As You Go meter, use electricity as much as you can during your low-rate time bands. These meters cost exactly the same as credit meters and you can enjoy the same tariff choices too.

Heat water at night

Switch your hot water timer to start heating from 11pm. This will cost you significantly less* and is powered using 100% imported renewable energy.

*if you are on the Super Economy 12 tariff

Always switch off when you’ve finished Lights, games consoles or monitors left on burn both your money and diesel at the power station. Why pay for it when you don’t have to?

Peak usage times are around breakfast, lunch and dinner, when most people need electricity for heating, working and cooking. Switch off what you don’t actually need for lower electricity bills and lower carbon emissions.

We have fridge magnets and stickers available from our shop on the Bridge to help remind you of your low-rate times. Need more ideas? Visit our website.

Thinking about electrical installations? Please read this first. Most electrical installations need an application for “additional load”. This is to assess if the network in your area and the electricity supply line cable to your property have enough capacity to power your new items. As so many people are transitioning to electric solutions, the application process takes time to fully complete and we recommend discussing options with your installers as early as possible.

Tip: Switching to LED lighting could save you up to £15 per year per bulb. Why pay more to light the same space?
