KIAMA COUNCIL Note from the CACDO Hello and welcome to the July/August edition of the Kiama Cultural Arts Network Newsletter.

You will have noticed that this issue is in a new format. Why? To trial new ways to get our important arts information out into the community.

It is hoped that this new format will continue to allow us to provide our online access, while also providing hardcopy versions each month.

Timeframe; the KCAN Newsletter goes out once a month (usually around the third or fourth week of each month), so it's best to send time sensitive information well in advance.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN THE ARTS Kiama Council acknowledges the Wodi Wodi and the Dharawal people on whose land we meet, work, live and play, and pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

Artist Gatherings Our next gathering due Tuesday 27 July 2021, has been cancelled due to COVID restrictions.

@The Old Fire Station Exhibitions at the Old Fire Station run from Friday to Wednesday, and are open between 10am and 4pm each day.

Information on upcoming exhibitions can be found on the Kiama Cultural Arts Network website, Due to current COVID restrictions all of July's bookings have been cancelled by the artists.

Bookings Open Bookings for January to June 2022 are now open.

Kiama Cultural Grants Due to the upcoming Council elections the next funding round of the 2021/22 Kiama Cultural Grants will not close until midnight Sunday 13 March 2022.

However, you can be working up and submitting your applications now.

Information workshops will be held on Tuesday 15 February 2021, 2.00pm and 6.30pm at the Joyce Wheatley Community Centre Arts Space.

CREATE TO CONNECT SENTRAL YOUTH SERVICES

Calling all musicians!

The Create to Connect program is looking for; musicians, songwriters, producers, music teachers, and all musical talents able to connect and work with young people.

We are looking to establish song writing workshops, music production lessons, musical instrument instruction and tutorship, choir and musical groups, branding and promotion workshops, hip-hop, rap, spoken word and poetry workshops, and more...

We want to hear what you have to offer!

Create to Connect is a youth-driven creative arts project that aims to engage young people in the community and empower them to develop their abilities through art.

We want to link young people with opportunities for skill development, facilitate inter-generational mentoring, and provide them with chances to showcase their work

WE ARE LOOKING FOR MUSICIANS, SONGWRITERS , PRODUCERS, MUSIC TEACHERS, AND ALL MUSICAL TALENTS WHO ARE ABLE TO CONNECT AND WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

Through the mental health and well-being benefits of participation in the arts, we also hope to help young people to increase their feelings of resilience and connection.

While we have the scope to engage anyone between the ages of 12 and 24, the majority of young people who have shown interest in this program are aged 14-20.

The program is set to run from now until February 2022.

Exploring Clarice Beckett with Michelle Cawthorn Saturday 4 September Would you like to learn the atmospheric and painterly techniques of Australian Artist Clarice Beckett? Join award winning artist Michelle Cawthorn for this one day workshop suitable for those with some painting experience. You can work in either oils or acrylics from a photograph of your own locale. Silver Jewellery with Magdalena Pillai Saturday 11 September Magdalena Pillai returns for another Sculptural Silver Jewellery workshop - the last workshop was such a hit! Such a fun workshop with the freedom to create your own designs, with all materials included. Book here

Kantha Purse with Michele Elliot Sunday 12 September Join textile artist, Michele Elliot for some slow stitching to make a upcycled fabric purse. Michele will work with you to design and create a unique purse, using fabric scraps and offcuts and simple kantha style embroidery. This is such a pleasurable meditative technique that is suitable for all levels.

Michele’s workshops are small in number so as to give time for individual attention. No sewing experience is necessary. Book here

Kevin Sullivan has set off as a family again, on the second leg of their 'Sulli-Van' tour.

On Saturday 12th June 2021, Kevin was a finalist in a songwriting award at the Dusty Boot Awards Festival in Narromine, NSW. However, he won the John P Toomey Songwriting Award, for his song 'Pilgrimage'.

Pilgrimage is an Anzac Day song Kevin wrote after returning from the 100 year commemoration at Gallipoli in 2015 with his brother Christopher.

POSTER DESIGN EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

THE WATER RUNNERS WWW.THEWATERRUNNERS.COM In January the Water Runners hosted a house concert in Kiama and then spent a magic (and busy) week with Matt Fell at Love Hz Studios in Sydney recording their album, Further Down the Road.

Topping the week off with a sellout show at Petersham Bowlo.

February saw COVID restrictions in venues begin to ease and they played a show at the Southern Sydney Folk Club, while in the background, worked on final mixes and mastering of their album. They also played a live streamed ‘Folk Unlocked’ show as part of the Folk Alliance Conference in conjunction with Isol-Aid and Sounds Australia.

They enjoyed the buzz of streaming live from John’s living room in Kiama to all over the world.

March was spent in finalising the mastering of the new album thanks to William Bowden of King Willy Sound. Also a couple of shows at the Kiama Jazz and Blues Festival were followed by some local gigs and then the Tilba Festival on Easter Saturday,

April included the released of a new song, 'Ocean', via all streaming platforms, along with a fun Youtube clip custesy of Grant at Cue Creative. Check it out at here Bec Gracie (aka ‘The Country Journo’) began working with the band to help promote their music resulting in a round of radio interviews and plays and a sellout show for the Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival as well as the chance to play one of Wollongong’s newest venues, The Shy Postie.

A new video clip was also filmed for the song, Eureka, which tells the sad story of the 1912 Eureka Mine disaster in Kiama. Check out the clip here May was spent finalising the art work for the album with Teel Studios, Wollongong and playing some local shows.

In June the Water Runners single Eureka was released and a flurry of radio interviews ensured including;

ABC Illawarra, KIX Country FM, 2 SER, 2MCE, and 7 Mid FM in Tasmania. They did a show in Nowra June with Charlie & Jensen who were about to go on tour with Montgomery Church. Eureka also got played on ABC’s Saturday Night Country.

While the last week of June, saw COVID back on the scene and things beginning to shut down, the band still have the following shows lined up, and were working on more; : August 28 Troubadour Folk Club, Woy Woy September 4 Kiama Bowlo 24/25 Sep – Folk BY the Sea, Kiama 1 – 4 October (long weekend) – Uranquinty Folk Festival 15 -17 October Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival Dec 17 Kiama Bowlo January 2022 – Tamworth Country Music Festival (dates/venues TBA) The new album, 'Futher Down the Road' will be released digitally via all streaming platforms on 23 July.

Greg’s next exhibition is at the Fire Station in Terralong St from 28 October to 3 November.

Terra HAHA will include local musician Mark Crotti, local comedian Diana McLaren plus performances from comedians Liam McCann, Malika, and Harry Jun.

Perched on the top of a hill in the back streets of Kiama, with incredible ocean and countryside views, the Art Bar serves contemporary art exhibitions, a great Sunday Session of live music and irresistible cocktails.

Wendy Dobson has been a practicing artist all her life. Born and raised in Kiama, she spent hours from an early age making pictures, learning through practice how to represent the world around her in images and feelings.

Wollongong artist Wendi Leigh’s art diversifies as it grows organically, crossing between reality and abstraction and finding paths that have led to exhibitions and teaching. Coming from a fashion and art background, Wendi was a designer and pattern maker for many years in Sydney and Berlin, and is well known in the Illawarra for her beautiful clothes and designs.Wendi has exhibited extensively experimenting with watercolour, gouache, acrylic, oils, charcoal and crayon. Her current work explores the ODORI style, Overt Distortion of Real Imagery, a practice that treats each shape and space individually to enhance its own merits.

Well-known in Kiama for producing and teaching ceramics, she has returned in recent years to her first love, painting. And it is here that we start to get an insight into her imagination and creative spirit. Wendy’s connection to the Kiama area goes back generations, born a Hindmarsh, one of the founding families of Kiama, she has been a celebrated and active member of the Kiama Art Society and Kiama art scene all her life.

Together, this exhibition LAYERS is a synthesis of observances by two remarkable artists. Wendy Dobson’s dynamic natural world and Wendi Leigh’s sprawling coastal suburbs while contrary, they employ similar techniques to tell their story. A mixture of realism, layered with abstract shapes and colours that imbue a sense of harmony and acceptance.“When I look at a subject, it’s impact either draws.

WOLLONGONG ART GALLERY Echos in Time Contemporary collection works which reflect the technical and aesthetic qualities of Asian ceramics presented in response to the Mann–Tatlow Collection of Asian Art. PUBLIC ART OPPORTUNITY Are you an experienced mural artist who can capture the essence of what it's like to live in Shellharbour?

Two mural locations have been identified within the Stocklands Centre, Shellharbour, and artists are encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest for either one, or both of the locations.

The intention of the murals is to add colour, excitement and vibrancy to the centre and capture the essence of Shellharbour life.

Submissions are due by Monday 2 August, more information can be found in the Expressions of Interest pack here.

Project Overview Stockland is seeking Expressions of Interest from experienced mural artists interested in creating one or two internal wall murals. We are seeking a creative design that brings colour, excitement and vibrancy to the area and captures the essence of what it's like to live in Shellharbour and what makes living in Shellharbour so special.

Artists must be;: ·Australian residents ·18 years of age or over, and ·experienced in delivering art murals

Artists may submit an EOI either as an individual or part of a team.

Both murals could be a single piece or multipiece artwork, using the artist's chosen medium of painting or other suitable materials.

New Accessibility Workshop for Marketing And Comms Workers Due to popular demand, a brand new training workshop has been developed to help marketing and commincations workers in the arts, culture and events sectors to improve the accessibility and inclusiveness of their relevant digital communications.

During the 90-minute online worskhop, participants will discover practical solutions and ‘easy wins’ for delivering accessible website content and functionality, digital newsletters, social media posts and video content.

Creative Skill Share - Expressions of Interest!

Shellharbour Council is seeking expressions of interest from local visual artists who would like to share their creative skills. This can be in the form of painting, drawing, textiles, ceramics, mixed media or other!

Council is seeking artists who could deliver art workshops to a range of ages in Shellharbour. There are numerous creative initiatives such as Artist of the Month and Art After Hours, that would provide various opportunities for artists to be involved.
