art as jewellery “A Decade of Artist’s Jewellery”, the last gallery publication of this scale, was published almost exactly three years ago in celebration of the gallery’s tenth anniversary. It documented the inception of Louisa Guinness Gallery and my early collaborations, and went on to list images of works separated into three sections “Collaborations”, “Contemporary” and “Modern Masters”. It was conceived as a way of suggesting the shape of the gallery collection and, more importantly, to give a sense of the range and volume of artists who have turned their hand to jewellery over the past 100 years. At the time of its publication we felt ourselves approaching a new moment in the perception of our niche amongst contemporary artists, institutions and the market. It felt to us that in 2013 in particular more collectors were taking note, more fairs were offering artist made jewellery and more museums were interested in exhibiting work than ever before.

We moved into our Mayfair gallery at 45 Conduit Street only months after the “decades” publication: the first ever London gallery space dedicated exclusively to exhibiting contemporary and historic artist’s jewels. Since then the artist jewellery market has continued to go from strength to strength. Sometime buyers have become collectors whilst at auction, artist jewellery has developed from the odd miscellaneous lot found in various sale categories to an auction category in itself.

The gallery programme at 45 Conduit Street has featured solo shows of work by contemporary artists, group shows and installations as well as our ground breaking solo show of jewellery by iconic French artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Thanks to the support of some of the most important collectors in the field, as well as that of legendary artist jewellery maker GianCarlo Montebello (founder of GEM MONTEBELLO editions in Milan which was responsible for some of the greatest examples in the field; including jewels by Lucio Fontana, Niki de Saint Phalle and Man Ray) we were able to include never before seen sketches from the Montebello archive, showing the creative process next to the rarest examples of Saint Phalle’s jewels.

Our contemporary programme has contributed decisive new additions to the field in recent years, images of which you will find in the following pages including Gavin Turk’s

Ceremonial Biscuit, Ron Arad’s unique standing Naja, Conrad Shawcross’ Seven Days, and Nic Fiddian Green’s mesmerising lapis sculpture. They are what great artist-made jewellery should be, inhabiting the ineffable moment between art, sculpture and jewellery.

We have published individual catalogues on each of these artists; please do contact the gallery if you are interested and we can send them to you. Otherwise you will also find digital versions of all recent publications on our website.

We have some fabulous new collaborations lined up for the next few years and many more exhibitions planned. Most excitingly I have been invited by Jacob Rothschild to curate an exhibition of artists’ jewels at Waddesdon Manor next year. This will be the first ever exhibition of its kind in the UK - I am delighted to be able to share our passion and knowledge with the general public at this museum.

We continue to participate in leading art fairs around the world where we see many of our international collectors. We remain, however, proud of our gallery exhibition programme and would like to take this opportunity to encourage you all to visit the space in person. We have great treasures in our vaults that cannot possibly come to all the fairs and, as is always the case with art and for these objects particularly, they are always much better in the flesh!

We are about to close our latest exhibition of work by Nic Fiddian Green, which will be followed by our exciting new solo show of work by Claude Lalanne, Butterflies and Bijoux, opening on June 8th. This will be followed in September by ‘The Boldness of Calder’; an exhibition focussing as much on the wearers of Calder’s sartorial artworks as the works themselves.
