Louisa County VFW Post 8947 The Veterans of Foreign War Post 8947 was mustered in 1947 and has been in service to Louisa County ever since.

The VFW is the nation’s oldest service veterans nonprofit organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members. Louisa County Post 8947 has achieved the VFW AllState status three years running. We also were awarded the Louisa County Chamber of Commerce Partner of the Year award. The VFW provides services to veterans and their families, including assistance with Veterans Administration claims and fighting for veterans rights in Washington, DC. We place flags in Mineral on patriotic holidays, collect American flags for retirement and have a joint Honor Guard with the American Legion for funerals and ceremonies. The Battle of Trevilian Station June 11-12, 1864 The Battle of Trevilian Station was the largest allcavalry battle of the Civil War. In June 1864, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant ordered Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan to make a raid along the Virginia Central Railroad, destroy the road at the crucial junction town of Gordonsville, and then march to Charlottesville, destroy the supply depot there, and rendezvous with the army of Maj. Gen. David Hunter. The combined force would then march east, where it would join the Army of the Potomac at Petersburg.

Sheridan marched on June 7, taking two divisions of cavalry and four batteries of horse artillery, about 9,000 men. Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton, leading two divisions of Confederate cavalry pursued the next day, and by utilizing shorter, interior routes of march, Hampton, along with the division of Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee, got across Sheridan's route of march at Trevilian Station, a stop on the Virginia Central six miles west of Louisa and six miles southeast of Gordonsville, on June 10. The battle,

ranging over 7,000 acres, raged for two days.

The first day battle belonged to the Union, but not the second. During the night of the 11th, Hampton posted his division in an angled line covering the railroad west of Trevilian. Sheridan spent the morning on June 12 destroying some five miles of the railroad track. Only then did he move out to attack Hampton's strong position west of the station. Time and again the dismounted Federals charged the Confederate line only to be repulsed. Federal soldiers took to calling Hampton's position their own "Bloody Angle," in reference to the recent battle at Spotsylvania Battlefield Court House. However, an attack by Fitzhugh Lee against Sheridan's right flank late in the day brought the battle to a close. At 10 p.m.

Sheridan broke off the fight and returned to the Army of the Potomac, having failed to unite with Hunter or to inflict any permanent damage to the railroad. Sheridan lost 735 men in the two-day battle; Confederate losses, though not precisely known, probably numbered near 1,000.

The Louisa County Historical Society The Louisa County Historical Society was founded over 50 years ago to preserve and protect the history of Louisa County.

We've grown over those years and now have a Museum of Louisa County History, a oneroom 19th Century schoolhouse, and an 18th Century Heritage Farm.

Five rooms in the museum display exhibits that are colorful, graphic, bold and detailed. The exhibits include the county's native inhabitants, the role of its citizens in shaping American's liberty and democracy during the American Revolution, the Civil War in Louisa County, early transportation, education and government, and an exhibit telling the story of the journey of women and African Americans toward equal rights in Louisa County.

Digital History Trail Through Louisa County What do these sites have in common: the location of a 1700s Quaker Meeting House, the birthplace of the first African-American elected to the U. S. Congress, and a farm where archaeological evidence abounds of an early Indian settlement? They are all on the new digital history trail called “Give Me Liberty.” Whether visiting online or in person, the trail lets you explore 75 sites highlighting people, places and events from the history of Louisa County largely lost to time.

The name for the trail comes from the famous 1775 speech by Patrick Henry whose story will also be on the trail as Louisa County’s representative to the colonial House of Burgesses. His is but one of the Virginia Historical Highway Markers along the trail.

The trail is part of the Virginia Tourism Commission’s (VTC) “American Evolution” initiative, an effort to reveal the stories of the people whose struggles for equality and freedom helped shape our nation.

TOWN OF LOUISA,VIRGINIA Rich in History, Vibrant, and Growing Today

The early history of the Town of Louisa is rooted in the establishment of a courthouse in 1742, from there, making an early impact, its residents included major players influencing the times. As travel routes were established, the significance of the village of Louisa Courthouse grew to be a crossroads, and consequently, a Civil War target. By 1873, the Town of Louisa is born — and grows from its first Town Council meeting to the Town of Louisa we know and love today.

A number of early personalities of note furthered the significance of the village of Louisa Court House.

Patrick Henry, American Revolutionary icon and author of the“give me liberty or give me death” speech, was first elected to the Virginia House of 24

Burgesses from Louisa in 1765.

Henry was a protégé of fellow Louisa Burgess, Thomas Johnson. Johnson, a man reportedly of enormous girth operated a tavern next to the Louisa Courthouse, and also became the High Sheriff of Louisa.

Captain Jack Jouett, known as the Paul Revere of the South, galloped through Louisa Courthouse in the early morning of June 4, 1781 to successfully warn Governor Thomas Jefferson that British dragoons were advancing toward Monticello with the intent of capturing the governor. Louisa Court House was situated on the Old Mountain Road running west from Richmond, currently U.S. Rt. 33. In 1800, Louisa also became a stop on the new north/south Post Road running from Fredericksburg through

Louisa Court House to Point of Fork on the upper James River. The Post Road’s completion coincided with establishment of the first Louisa Post Office in September 1800. Today Route 208 mostly follows the original Post Road and is known in several sections as Courthouse Road.

Construction on the Louisa Railroad began in 1836 and its successor the Virginia Central Railroad was completed through Louisa in 1840 permitting transportation of farming products to Eastern cities for sale and for export. As important routes of supply, the Louisa Court House’s railroad lines were on-going targets for Union Army raids during the Civil War. These attacks culminate in the major cavalry engagement just west of the town at Trevillian Station on June 11 and 12, 1864.

The incorporated Town of Louisa was created by Act of the General Assembly in 1873. The first Louisa Town Council consisted of seven local Trustees appointed in the Act. The Council was empowered to pass by-laws and ordinances, to keep the streets, to make other necessary improvements, and to levy taxes not to exceed fifty cents on each hundred dollars. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Louisa served as a summer vacation destination for residents of Richmond and the Tidewater area. Several large Louisa homes and the Louisa Hotel took in boarders whenever temperatures and the humidity rose on the Peninsula.

By the 1930’s, a Town water supply, electricity, and paved roads were offered to residents of the Town of Louisa.

Since then, the Town of Louisa has added subdivisions, sidewalk projects, a stronger police force, a clean environment to raise a family, and is a retail hub for Louisa County with close proximity to the

Louisa Industrial Park, intersections of Routes 33/22/208, home to the Courthouse, County Office Building, and numerous retail businesses. The Town also offers a wide array of eating establishments, all inside its 1.8 square miles. Main Street revitalization has been completed from VDOT/Federal TEA Grant Funding and the Town Water System has been revamped with numerous enhancement projects, benefitting its 1665 citizens and sectors of commerce.

Louisa Community Emergency Fund, Inc. (LCEF) Touching Lives in Crisis Our Mission is to assist Louisa County residents with the basic needs of daily living during a crisis situation. LCEF provides financial assistance to help qualified families pay their current housing or basic utility bills. Since we began accepting requests for assistance in November 2015, we have helped over 200 families in crisis. Through our fundraisers and local community support with donations and grants, we have provided over $40,000 in financial assistance.

We partner with the Virginia Extension Service to conduct family budgeting classes for some of our clients. LCEF believes in the importance of helping people to recover from their crisis and to move forward. Other community partnerships allow us to refer those who need services that we don’t provide, like food, clothing and medical assistance. And our administrative expenses are very low, less than 3% of our total income!

For assistance, Louisa County residents can call our Intake Coordinator at MACAA, 540967-9522. Our Coordinator will schedule a confidential appointment at her office at the Sage Building, 115 Jefferson Highway, Louisa, to determine how LCEF can best help.

LCEF coordinates several fundraisers each year, including a spring dinner and mini-golf tournament at Lake Anna, a summer barbecue throwdown, and a fall gospel extravaganza. We invite everyone to join us for our events, and donations are always welcome to help us “touch lives in crisis”.

In September 2002, the Louisa Town Council had a plan. Realizing the role arts and culture play in the vitality of a community and the impact the arts have on the quality of life, the Council purchased the 1907 Elementary/high School, which had been dormant for 17 years.

This structure became the Louisa Town Hall and Arts Center (LAC).

The Town Hall and Arts Center is a beautiful two-story granite building located at the corner of Fredericksburg Avenue and School Street. In April 2004, town leaders formed the Louisa Downtown Development Corporation, Inc. The mission was to implement a plan for historic preservation and develop arts and culture within the town of Louisa and the surrounding area. In June 2005, the town of Louisa broke ground and began the restoration for the town hall portion of the building. In the Summer of 2006, ground was broken for the 1600 square foot addition for the Purcell Arts Gallery, kitchen and restoration of the old auditorium. LAC held its grand opening celebration to commemorate the completion of construction August of 2008.

LAC celebrates its tenth anniversary this September as the “Jewel of the Arts” in central Virginia. The program escalation over the past ten years has been overwhelming. Many of our patrons come from within 25 miles; many attendees come from within a 100-mile radius.

Attendance has increased each year as programing continues to grow. For example, theatre productions; “Silver Tie Gala;” Arts in Education (in partnership with Louisa County Public Schools); visual arts – Toast to Art; and during the summer, youth programs, educational camps and family movie series.

The 2018-19 season, we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of LAC on four weekends in September. These events will feature local talent – Southern Velocity, The Courtney Brothers, Sauna Mountain Valley Boys and Billy Brockman, as a “thank you” to all our patrons for their continued support. There will be a special presentation September 29th to acknowledge those members of the community who decided to make the Arts Center a reality. The season will continue October 6 with the annual “Silver Tie Gala” featuring Ambrosia. The excitement level will continue through the remainder of 20182019 with The Original Rhondels, Skip Castro Band, Tayla Lynn & Tre Twitty, Elijah Rock, Sound Works, The Seldom Scene, December ’63 and Hotel California! In December, Central Virginia Theatre (CVT) will begin their season with the ever-popular musical Oliver! In March 2019, CVT will present The Nerd, a two-act comedy written

by American actor/playwright Larry Shue. In April, The Living Last Supper brings to life an intimate portrayal of Jesus and his disciples the night before he was crucified.

LAC has accomplished its vision of becoming the area’s center for creativity: balancing arts, culture, education and entertainment for our community.

The Secret of JAUNT As newcomers explore Louisa County, they uncover its treasures and pleasant surprises. Now, one more secret is out.

Louisans have public transportation, and it’s called JAUNT. JAUNT started its Louisa service in 1987. Its red, white, and blue buses take Louisans to work, shopping, medical appointments, leisure activities, and just about any other place or event they want to go in the county every weekday. Plus, for a taste of the city, the bus system brings county residents to Charlottesville three days a week.

From Mineral, Bumpass, Gum Spring, and all over Louisa County, people use JAUNT to go to Walmart, Lowe’s, Food Lion, UVA Dialysis, Martha Jefferson Spring Creek Medical Center, and other establishments in Zion Crossroads. Many senior citizens travel to the Betty Queen Center for social activities (that’s not to say that others aren’t heading there for the aquatic center or disc golf course).

“As more people settle in Louisa County to work or retire, and as more businesses set up shop here, JAUNT will play an increasingly important role in everybody’s lives,”said JAUNT Public Relations and Marketing Manager Brian 36

Although based in Charlottesville since 1975, JAUNT—a Louisa County Chamber of Commerce member—has strong connections to Louisa. In December 2017, JAUNT worked with county supervisors to design a wrap unique to Louisa, incorporating the high school’s colors and lion mascot on two buses.

Virginia Agriculture

This year has proven as every year to be eventful in many ways for farmers including a moving target on International Trade Tariffs affecting agricultural commodities like corn, soybeans, pork and beef, a delay in the Agriculture Bill, and at first a drought followed by enormous amounts of rain with flooding and problems with plantings. Despite all the handicaps our farmers are a hearty breed and have and will persist despite the barriers.

The County of Louisa, and the State continue to produce significant amounts of agricultural products. To make the point here are some facts from the Virginia Department of Agriculture "Agriculture is Virginia’s largest private industry by far, with nothing else coming a close second. The industry has an economic impact of $70 billion annually and provides more than 334,000 jobs in the Commonwealth. The industries of agriculture and forestry together have a total economic impact of over $91 billion and provide more than 442,000 jobs in the Commonwealth. Every job in agriculture and forestry supports 1.7 jobs elsewhere in Virginia’s economy.”

In the most recent USDA survey, Louisa has 485 farms managed by full-time farmers and many, who have to maintain another job to support themselves and their families. These farms cover an area of over 80,000 acres, and produce a market value of products of approximately $15 million. These statistics do not account for the total value of agricultural products and are probably a

significant underestimate. There are thousands of small gardens where the produce is consumed by the grower, given away, bartered, or sold at roadside stands or at Farmers Markets.

Is all as it should be in our bucolic, usually quiet, peaceful, forested, agricultural community? Maybe not. Are we keeping up with innovations, e.g. Internet connectivity?

Despite the importance of agriculture locally an article from The Central Virginian in June 2018, read "Agricultural committee threatened with elimination. Not enough members attend meetings". The headline speaks for itself, but mandates a number of questions that the community, whose economic fortunes reside so significantly with agriculture, must answer.

We should have an open dialogue, not only about Districts, but agriculture in general and if appropriate, action. Here are a few questions for consideration: • Do we have or do we need to update a Strategic County Agricultural Plan?

• Should we be applying for economic and agricultural grants from the Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Funds for studying our current status and making recommendations?

• Have we done enough to sustain our farms and farmers?

Callie Opie's Orchard Restaurant opened just last August and has quickly become the "go to" restaurant serving the best food in the Lake Anna area. In just 10 months, Callie's has served over 15,000 meals and continues to grow entering it's first summer. No other restaurant in the area offers farm to table dining or changes it's menu as often based on seasonally available vegetables and fruits. In addition to serving dinner Tuesday thru Sunday, Callie's has added lunch service Fridays and Saturdays and also a Sunday Brunch.

Most recently Callie's has started what owner Mike Kavros calls "a real farmer's market" meaning only food related items are sold. No crafts, trinkets or flea market type items.

"The first couple weeks we had 2 local farms participate and expect that number to grow as seasonal items become available. This past week we had 5 participants offering select vegetables, grass feed meats, local honey, preserves, jellies, and even fresh squeezed lemonade!" Kavros commented. Callie's Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 9am - 12pm. Mike encourages those stopping by for the first time to check out the restaurant and venue, which has already hosted 2 weddings and will do several more over the coming months.

Kavros also said they're planning a celebration with live entertainment to mark their first year anniversary around the middle of August.

Louisa County Resource Council Providing Food For Our Neighbors in Need

Our organization develops and promotes activities that deliver supplemental food and other services to lowincome, elderly and disadvantaged County residents to meet their needs, without regard to race, gender, religion or national origin. Over 3,300 people are served through eight programs.

Community Cupboard provides a generous supply of groceries once a month to families who fall at or below 150% of federal poverty guidelines. Grocery Assistance provides generous amounts of food to those with limited incomes but who do not qualify for public food assistance (food stamps). Children's Feeding, in partnership with New Life Community Church, assures at-risk school children have enough food for weekends and holidays.

Emergency Food Pantry provides families in crisis with a week's supply of food.

60-Plus Food provides impoverished clients age 60+ with additional nutrition-rich groceries to supplement food they receive from other programs. Community Closet collects donated clothes for redistribution to our clients.

Meals on Wheels, in partnership with Central Virginia Food Bank, delivers prepared meals to home-bound County residents. By phone or face-to-face meetings, we make 500+ referrals each month through our Information and Referral service. We are open every weekday (9-3, except Thursday 11-5) at 147 Resource Lane in Louisa.

The town of Mineral has a storied history starting as a mining community known as Tolersville in 1890 by the Mineral City Mining Manufacturing and Land Company.

In 1902 the town was incorporated as Mineral City and sometime in the middle of the 20th century the “city” was dropped from its name.

Today, Mineral is a quaint historic town that is home to about 450 residents, many of them second and third generation dwellers.

In 2008 Mineral applied for designation as a Virginia Main Street Program community and is listed on the Virginia Landmark Register and the National Historic Register.

The Mineral Fire Department, the second oldest fire department in the county, was established in 1935 and continues to serve not only the town residents but surrounding county residents as a combined career and volunteer department. Fire and rescue personnel are housed at the station 24/7/365 with volunteers supplementing the manpower.

In recent years, however, the town and its adjoining lands have seen more commercial growth and today an eclectic variety of restaurants and businesses call the locale “home.” The Department of Motor Vehicles has a Select Center in the town’s office, offering basic services to customers.

The community is a baseball town with a long history of competitive games played 42

on its fields. Luck Field, named for Cecil Luck, was dedicated in 1992 on property that was formerly the Mineral Elementary School playground.

A playground, maintained by the Louisa County Parks and Recreation Department, is also located at the facility and is frequented by children all year long.

The Mineral Farmers Market operates across the street from the ball field in a vacant lot on Louisa Avenue from the first Saturday of May through the end of October as well as a mini market on Tuesday evenings.

Walton Park is a multi-use facility which is utilized for concerts, family reunions, festivals, fund raising events and as a walking area for residents. The facility was established as a horseshow grounds and donated to the town. Upgrades have been completed at the park, including the stage and picnic pavilion.

Bailey Fish Adventure Series Puts Louisa on the Map

Since 2005, an award-winning children's series set at Lake Anna in Louisa County has been read around the globe. The popular books offer fun adventures, and each includes a nonfiction or historical element relating to Louisa County or Virginia (national) history.

Author Linda Salisbury said that she had never dreamed that her first book, The Wild Women of Lake Anna, would immediately capture the attention of readers, who insisted the story of Bailey, and her grandmother, Sugar, to continue.

Quickly, the tale expanded into a second and third book, until she finally found a way to conclude the series with the eleventh. She had planned to stop with the eighth book, but then the 2011 earthquake that originated in Louisa happened, and adults and children demanded a book about how the characters coped with that major event.

Earthquake Surprise was the result. Almost all of the books have won national or state awards, some as many as four medals.

Wild Women also introduced the nonfiction aspects as eleven-year-old Bailey moved from her Florida home to live with Sugar while her mother traveled for a year. Salisbury's curiosity about the history of her new community, where she and her husband moved in 2004, led her to incorporate information about the development of the lake for the nuclear power plant, and regional gold mining in the book. In the second book, No Sisters Sisters Club, Bailey discovers an old abandoned house and baby cemetery that Salisbury had found in the woods near her lake home. Nonfiction includes the Battle of Trevilian Station and Jack Jouett's ride.

Salisbury said the old house becomes a country inn where much subsequent action takes place.

"Readers, both adults and youngsters are drawn to both the storyline and especially the very realistic characters, who represent, in a matter-of-fact way many family situations, such as divorce, adoption, foster care, disabilities, and blended families," Salisbury said. "There is a storyline that connects the series, but you don't have to read them in order."

Several years ago Salisbury was honored when Indiana Public Radio read book #5, The Ghost of the Chicken Coop Theater in weekly installments on a children's show.

"But the most rewarding part is having young people tell me and say that they didn't like reading, until they read my books, and now they are succeeding in college or enjoying books. Adults have invited me to book discussion groups, and I make classroom and school visits. Bailey and I get letters and e-mails from as far away as China. It's been a thrill. Bailey is so real that kids have wanted her to come over to play. That's a tricky one to answer."

Salisbury has authored eighteen books (published by Tabby House), including, most recently The Sword and the Broom, a retelling of Louisa County native John Mercer Langston's autobiography, which has won two international awards.

SUNSHARE: Through this program, REC members will be able to purchase blocks of solar energy to offset their monthly energy use. Members will be able to enjoy the benefits of solar energy without having to invest in a solar installation at their homes.

RESIDENTIAL RENEWABLE ENERGY: Net Metering with REC allows members to install renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, to produce electricity. When members generate more electricity than is being used, the excess energy flows into the power grid and the meter registers an energy credit. When a member's energy use exceeds their generation output, the meter will run forward as normal.

COMMUNITY SOLAR LEARNING CENTER: The 10kW solar photovoltaic generation system at REC’s Fredericksburg office is about two times larger than a typical residential solar installation.

Over the past few years, it has served as a learning tool not only for REC members, but also for school groups and others interested in understanding more about how solar energy works.

Central Virginia – a non-descript term until you look at a map of Louisa County. The primarily rural community truly is “central” as it is nestled in the triangle of Charlottesville, Richmond and Fredericksburg in the middle of the state.

Stretching along the border of Interstate 64, Louisa County touches Goochland and the Greater Richmond area on its eastern edge and Charlottesville and Albemarle County on its western boundary while to the north it borders Spotsylvania County and its ever growing metropolis of Fredericksburg.

Louisa County is also pivotal in its location, serving as a “bedroom community” to employees in the three larger regions. With easy access to and along the interstate and several major highways, the county has also been beneficial to commercial interests that need more open space for their businesses but also access to reliable transportation routes.

For visitors to the area, Louisa County’s location offers many opportunities for exploration. Within an hour from just about anywhere in the county, guests and residents can visit the rich history of Thomas Jefferson’s Charlottesville, James Madison’s Orange and the state capital in Richmond. Or, in less than two hours, they can visit the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C. and catch a professional baseball game. They can also take in many historical sites from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars on day trips, visit the mountains to hike or Lake Anna for a swim and day of fun at the water’s edge, or visit the region’s many winery and cideries, several of which are located right within the county’s borders.

Louisa County really does have it all in its prime location in Central Virginia, the center of the triad, center of the state and the center for fun and activities.

Gordonsville and Louisa County have been linked together since 1840, soon after the Louisa Railroad was chartered.

Zion Crossroads was once just a quaint village along the border of Louisa and Fluvanna counties that offered little more than an interstate access to surrounding vicinities and a cluster of mom and pop businesses, but today it is a vibrant bustling hive of activity. The mini metropolis offers residents and visitors numerous dining choices from fast food establishments to elegant sit-down meals, gas stations, and shopping experiences.

The interstate is still a key component to the area especially since Walmart not only has a store at the location but also a major distribution center nearby. Lowe’s also calls Zion Crossroads home offering residents the accessibility to a building materials store nearby. A Best Western hotel provides lodging for not only travelers, but also for workers who are employed in construction projects in the area.

Medical professionals have also established practices in the area to serve the community including a doctor’s office, dentist and dialysis center.

The growth of the region on the western edge of the county is mixed use, with a large subdivision, Spring Creek, not only offering residential amenities, but also a top notch golf course and facility for entertaining.

With its easy accessibility from several counties, the region will continue to grow as the needs of the community increase and with it, demand for additional services. A recent improvement to the interstate exits has enhanced traffic flow in the area benefiting the growth as well.
