Puer natus in Bethlehem

In dulci jubilo

For our third album we wanted to explore our favorite Christmas songs in the repertoire. From the contemplative and ethereal to the jubilant and bawdy, a joiful yule is meant for a cold winter’s night by a warm fire. Bringing together traditional songs, folk melodies, and original compositions, we revel in performing some of our favorite music for the holiday season.

We would like to thank our spouses, Paul Sánchez and Meredith Achey, for their neverending support. We would also like to give a very special thank you to Gramma Jeanne Crane and Grammy Sue Thomas for taking care of our little ones during recording sessions!

Sánchez & Laudon Schuett

Track 1: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel! Redeem thy captive Israel

That into exile drear is gone, Far from the face of God’s dear Son.

Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel Veni, veni, Emanuel: Captivum solve Israel, Qui gemit in exilio, Privatus Dei Filio.

Gaude! Gaude! Emanuel

Nascetur pro te, Israel

Latin

Quem pastores laudavere, quibus angeli dixere: ‘absit vobis jam timere, natus est Rex Gloriae!’

O come, O come, thou Dayspring bright! Pour on our souls thy healing light; Dispel the long night’s lingering gloom, And pierce the shadows of the tomb.

Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel

Track 2: Quem pastores laudavere

English Translation

The One who the shepherds praised, And about whom the Angels told: 'Abandon your present fears,'

The King of Glory is born.

Ad quem magi amhulabant, Aurum, thus, myrrham portabant; Immolabant haec sincere Leoni victoriae;

To Him the Kings walked, Carrying gold, frankincense and myrrh, Offering them religiously, For the Lion's victory.

Track 2: Quem pastores laudavere (cont)

Exsultemus cum Maria

In coelesti hierarchia:

Natum promant voce pia Dulci cum melodia; Christo Regi, Deo nato Per Mariam nobis dato, Merito resonet vere: ‘Laus, honor, et gloria!’

Let us rejoice with Mary, In union with the Celestial Hierarchy, Singing a pious song to the Newborn, That be sweet in its melody.

Of Christ the King, God born, Who was given to us by Mary, We should sing the merit: Praise, honor and glory.

Track 3: Of Jesse’s Line Descended (Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming)

Of Jesse’s line descended, By ancient sibyls sung, With thornless branch extended, From noble root newsprung. A rose doth bear a Flower, All in the cold midwinter And at the midnight hour.

The flower of ancient splendour, Of which Isaiah spake, Mary, the Rosebranch tender, Puts forth for mankind’s sake; Obedian to God’s will, A little Child she bears us, Yet is a maiden still.

The frozen air perfuming, That tiny Bloom doth swell; Its rays, the night illuming, The darkness quite dispel. O rose beyond compare, Bloom in our hearts’ midwinter: Restore the springtime there!

Joseph was an old man And an old man was he; And Joseph married Mary, The Queen of Galilee.

As they want a walking

In the garden so gay; Maid Mary spied cherries, Hanging over yon tree.

Mary said to Joseph

Track 4: The Cherry Tree Carol

“O then,” replied Joseph

With words so unkind, “I will pluck no cherries

For to give to thy child.”

Mary said to cherry tree, “Bow down to my knee, That I may pluck cherries

By one, two, and three.”

With her sweet lips so mild, “Pluck those cherries, Joseph, For to give to my Child.

Then the upper most sprig the Bowed down to her knee; “Thus you may see Joseph These cherries are for me. ”

“O eat your cherries, Mary, O eat your cherries now, O eat your cherries, Mary, That grow upon the bough.”

As Joseph was a walking, He heard angels sing, “This night there shall be born, Our heavenly king.”

Track 5: As I Outrode This Enderes Night

As I outrode this enderes night

Of thre joli sheppardes I saw a sight, And all abowte there fold a star shone bright; They sange ‘Terli, terlow!’

So merely the sheppards ther pipes can blow.

Doune from heaven, from heaven so hie, Of angeles ther came a great company, With mirthe and joy and great solemnitye; They sange ‘Terli, terlow!’

So merely the sheppards ther pipes can blow.

Track 6: Billy’s Ground

Track 7: Sweet Was the Song the Virgin Sung

Sweet was the song the Virgin sung When she to Bethlem Juda came And was deliver’d of her Sonne, That blessed Jhesus hath to Name.

‘Lula, lulla, lullaby, lulla, lulla, lullaby, Sweet Babe!’ Quoth she; ‘My Sonne and eke a Saviour borne, Which hath vouchsafed, from an high To visitt us that wer forlorne.

‘La lulla, la lulla, la lullaby, Sweet babe!’ Sung she, And rockt him featlie on hir knee.

The boar’s head, as I understand, Is the rarest dish in all the land, Which thus bedecked with a gay garland, Let us servire cantico.

Track 12: There Stood in Heaven a Linden Tree

There stood in heaven a linden tree, But, though ‘twas honey-laden, The angels cried: ‘No bloom Shall be like that of one fair maiden.’ Sped Gabriel on winged feet, And passed through bolted portals

In Nazareth, a maid to greet, Blessed o ’ er all other mortals.

‘Hail Mary!’ cried the angel mild, ‘Of womankind the fairest: A maiden ay shalt thou be styled, Although a babe thou bearest.’

But how should I a mother be While yet a maid remaining?

No man with love hath looked on me: ‘Tis strange past all explaining!’

Most noble queen, no man on earth Shall share in thy conceiving: Thou shalt by God be brought to birth, The Holy Ghost receiving.’

‘So be it!’ God’s handmaid gan cry ‘According to thy telling.’ To heaven the angel then did fly, To his celestial dwelling.

This news filled all the heavens with glee: ‘Twas passed from one to other That ‘twas Mary, none but she, That God would call his mother.

Track 16: In dulci jubilo

English

With sweet jubilation, Now sing and be happy! All our joy Lies in a manger, And shines like the sun In [your] mother's lap.

You are the Alpha and Omega! O little Jesus, I long for you.

Comfort my soul, O best of boys; Through all your goodness, O Prince of Glory, Draw me after you!

O love of the Father! O gentleness of the Son! We would all be lost Through our sins But for us he has bought

The joys of heaven; O, if only we were there!

Where are the joys?

Nowhere else but there, Where the angels sing

New songs, And the bells ring, In the courts of the King; O, that we were there!
