Linda Petty

rt and Heart are two words that not only rhyme, but they both stir deep emotions and meanings as well. Walking into Artist Linda Petty’s studio gallery, I immediately see beautiful fine art on the walls. There are mostly floor to ceiling acrylic artwork (and a few in oil, watercolor and pencil) of every size, various color schemes, techniques and mediums. Many are wonderful views of nature in a realistic-impressionism painting style and other subjects, including architecture, florals, land and seascapes and even a Disney scene, demonstrating her artistic variety and versatility! That was expected, but I was also drawn to another intriguing and subtle aspect - their connection to the heart.

After the visual introduction, I am aware that all of her art has a deeper meaning from Scripture and may be embellished and expanded by calligraphy.

Petty has long been an inspirational artist. When she learned that the Bible contains nearly 200 references to the heart that impacts all areas of life, Linda purposed to illustrate them! For over 30 years, she has created original, archival, mixed medium framed fine art, with her inspirational calligraphy and tagged them, "H'Artwork". Many were made as gifts for ministry volunteers. It was her friends who convinced her to make her creations available to the public and so her "Art By Heart" business was born in 2006. Linda also leads popular workshops, where people come to create their own custom "H'Artworks" for themselves and as gifts to encourage others.

Throughout her career, Petty always used her creative artistic skills as a teacher, worship program director, interior designer

and eventually became a children and adult art instructor. She decided early on to combine her talents, education and passion to inspire and enrich other people’s lives. This encompasses her background not only in art, but also education and music degrees, calligraphy, ministry and business experience. So, it’s the wisdom of the words that takes her art to another dimension. In this way, she encourages people through her art.

Linda was born and raised in a large, blended family in Rockford, IL and has always used her creativity, including painting stage drama sets, signs for her Dad's business and also designs for church and recreation events. As a teen she received acclaim for a melted crayon portrait of Jesus at age 16. “I've always been enthralled by

the beauty of God's creation, change of seasons and would revel just to hike in the woods, wade in streams or be delighted watching ants help the peonies in our yard to finally bloom.”

She served with her husband, Dr. Bruce Petty, in ministry for over 43 years and he is now CEO of Today's Chaplain, a corporate chaplain agency, serving clients in two counties, including the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce.

He is her biggest fan and supports all of her artistic adventures, by preparing wood materials, and setting up/taking down displays for the many juried Art Shows and Festivals in which she participates.

Since moving to Georgia, Petty has created additional mediums and categories for unique art forms including: "H'ArtWoods" - popular FarmArtstyle, original painted scenes and calligraphed verses on weathered wood, and smaller "Canvas H'Art" (Verses only). There are also “H’Art Blocks”, Letters on wood blocks to spell out vision words, like "JOY" or "PEACE" in the gallery corner sitting on an chalk painted display center. Just when you think there are no more art forms to present her inspirational words, I see "Hart Tag" jewelry verse pendants, (worn next to your heart) and "H'Artcards" (with pictures of all her art on notecards). Most all of the verses she selects offer wise advice, appreciation, or celebration of special life events and are incorporated into her visual art forms, providing not only beautiful decor for walls, but useful advice for the soul. It’s not often you can get such a positive combination of accents into one piece of art. After her daughter's home was flooded in Houston, TX, the water rose up to 4.5' and stopped just under her "H'Artwork" that read, "Many waters cannot quench love; neither can the floods drown it."

Besides her own studio and Cumming Art Center, Petty's artwork has been displayed at the Cumming courthouse, Lush Life Gallery and is currently also available for purchase at Sexton Enrichment Center.

ow that the holiday season is behind us, how can we lose those extra 20 pounds? Why is it so hard for some people to lose weight while others can lose pounds in their sleep? Similarly, we are all predisposed to many different genetic diseases, yet we don’t end up with all of the diseases. Genetic weaknesses need to have triggers and for those who are predisposed to being overweight, certain foods can be that trigger. For the rest of us, gaining weight is about eating too much and not moving enough. Additionally, as we age our metabolism slows, making it all the more important to be vigilant.

The question is: How can we lose the weight and keep it off? It’s

fairly simple. If you eat more then you burn calorie-wise, you will gain weight. The solution is cutting empty calories, remaining well hydrated, eliminating simple carbohydrates, eating more whole organic vegetables, fruits, fish, meat and keeping your protein portions to about 3-4 ounces per meal. Intermittent fasting is also an incredible way to lose weight quickly and safely.

If you are doing a Keto diet, be sure you are getting enough minerals and drinking plenty of water. Burning body fat quickly causes the loss of water, so it’s very important to stay hydrated.

If you are eating a low-calorie diet, make sure you aren’t working out heavily because the body will break muscle down for protein. The trick to keeping weight off is replacing poor eating habits with healthy new ones. It’ll be worth the effort!

I am also very good on a leash. So, in addition to being their princess, I would also be their workout trainer.

How cool is that? You want to know something else about me? I keep my kennel very clean. You know, on paper, I sound pretty good; I think that anyone who is looking for a special fur child should come and check me out.

veryone remembers an experience in their past about a skating rink. You may have skated with the old metal clip-on skates in the road in front of your house if you were lucky enough to have a paved road. But going to a skating rink was special. You rented skating boots and skated in a magical circle with no gravel or potholes! And your friends were there and there was no rain or wind to worry about. The rink was the perfect environment for everything!

Everyone has those great memories from the past. But what if you could bring back those fun times or introduce them to your children? Thanks to Let’s Roll, Forsyth County is lucky to have that special experience still in our neighborhood.

The property that the skating rink sits on now was purchased

by Perry Cash back in 1962. Cash used the 40-acre property to start his dream of owning a chicken and cattle farm. Cash Poultry Farms started with 5 chicken houses and about 20 head of cattle. On the property across from the current rink, he built his chickens. Two of the chicken houses sat where the skating rink is now. His business expanded until Cash poultry Farms grew into one of the largest providers of eggs on the east coast and supplied most of the military bases up the coast as far as New York.

The goal and mission at Let’s Roll is to provide families with a clean, safe environment where they can celebrate and create memories with their children at an affordable price.

How did we get so lucky? As parents with two young children, Trey and Penny Butler noticed that there were not many venues in Forsyth County for families and children to enjoy. Their son Jake was involved

in a Roller Hockey program at the Cumming Skating Rink. But this rink was bought by the DOT to widen an Exit Ramp off GA 400. The need for a new rink and family activities is where the vision for the original Slapshots Sportplex was born. Over the next year they visited over 20 different rinks to come up with the perfect design for their business. Trey designed what he felt would work for a Sports Complex and at the same time provide the ambience of an old fashion skating rink with black lights and specialty lighting surrounding the skating surface.

They entered into a partnership with Penny‘s parents and they built and opened the skating rink in February of 1999. It provided treasured memories: birthday parties, public skating, video arcades, an outdoor aggressive skate park, a skate shop, private events and Roller Hockey leagues. But things never stay the same. After the professional hockey team left Atlanta in 2011, the local roller hockey market started to diminish. They decided to re-brand the rink to Let’s Roll Skate ‘n Fun Center.

They did a full renovation and focused on “old-fashioned” roller skating! The original vision had always been to create a place where the entire family could be involved, where everyone can exercise and keep active. And now the idea is to add something new every one to two years to keep families coming back. They strive to keep modern and up to date, but at the same time keep that “retro” feeling. Many parents say that the current facility is like stepping back in time to when they were kids. It

Since opening back in 1999, they have added Airsoft Depot, a retail store and an outdoor CQB war games field on the property. In addition, for the past five years, they have been home to The United Futbol Academy’s Winter Futsal League during the months of December and January.

During the process of running this business, they realized that they also have the opportunity to teach and instill into the mostly high school age employees, the tools and expectations of becoming a successful member of the working public. For most of them, this is their first job and they take the opportunity seriously in helping them along their path to being and becoming a success in their future job opportunities.

Being in business for over two decades has presented them with another unexpected opportunity. As Penny has observed, “We are now seeing some of our young skaters, former employees and past hockey players who grew up in our rink, now returning with their own young families. At the end of our day or at the end of our working years, we have learned that success is not measured by monetary value, but by the lives of the young people that we have helped along the way.”

The following are our main accomplishments in 2019. As a continuing practice Age Well provides the following to Meals on Wheels participants and/or the individual senior:

Scholarships for seniors that cannot afford to take a class they wish to participate in at one the centers

Several overnight trip opportunities for seniors that wish to travel

Age Well has a variety show as the major fundraiser for the year at the Cumming Playhouse.There are many board members as well as volunteers who participate in this show.

Cindy Bowman and Linda Ledbetter have directed it in years past and Ruthie Brew, the director for Senior Services, has been a volunteer!

On a continuing basis, two of our board members provide Holiday treats from Age Well for every holiday. These go to the Meals on Wheel participants and the congregate. They pay for this themselves.

Support and participate with the council on aging in Atlanta

•

Free cat and dog food as requested by MOW participants

•

Free incontinence products as requested by MOW participants

•

Yearly grant for extra food for seniors in need from the Food bank in Gainesville

•

$5,000 per year for Unfunded Meals on Wheels’ new participants

$5.000 per year for expenses for “Sunshine Group” Alzheimer’s participants at Sexton Hall

•

Funding as a sponsor for the yearly SENIOR EXPO at Lanier Tech

•

Extra money for fresh fruit and breakfast foods for congregate at Charles Place

•

A Valentine party for the seniors at Sexton Hall with music, entertainment and food

Dessert (pies) at the Thanksgiving Dinner at the senior center

“Grant for Seniors Program” - One grant per quarter for a qualifying senior who needs something they cannot do or provide for themselves. The grants are from $500 to $1,000 per quarter. Age Well gave out 4 grants this year--one per quarter.

A “Hoedown Party” at Sexton Hall for active seniors last September. Age Well provided the DJ music, entertainment, decorations, and food for everyone with the help of the Sexton Hall staff.

eep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB), a local affiliate of the state Keep Georgia Beautiful program and the national Keep America Beautiful program, has announced its 2020 focus, creating a “Litter-free Forsyth”.

Litter has a negative impact on economic development, health, and safety, as well as being harmful to wildlife, aquatic life, and the environment. Last year, litter cost Forsyth county over $160,000 in cleanup efforts, not including the expense of promoting and managing volunteer clean-ups. KFCB engaged more than 1100 volunteers in litter cleanups last year, collecting over 600 bags of litter from our roadways, in addition to tons of debris from Lake Lanier and its parks and shores.

The new initiatives are part of Keep Georgia Beautiful’s statewide campaign, designed to bring attention to the issue of litter throughout Georgia. The campaign will include digital and print media, cleanup events, educational activities, and community outreach including an online pledge accessible at www. keepgeorgiabeautiful.org. The slogan, “Consider ____ before you litter” and the hashtag #reconsiderlitter will be promoted widely, asking the public to contemplate the negative impact of littering and join the fight to reverse it.

“Ending litter is one of our primary initiatives along with reducing waste, promoting recycling, protecting our water ways, and beautifying communities”, said KFCB Executive Director, Tammy Wright. “I cannot think of a greater legacy than being a part of helping to create a litter free Forsyth.”

Or consider our “Adopt-A-Road” program, a volunteer opportunity that enables citizens to demonstrate their community pride by removing unsightly litter that accumulates along our county roadways.

he right to vote is one of the most important things we should exercise. And it is something we will have the opportunity to do this year. In fact, there will be several times you will be able to go to the polls and make your voice heard.

While the 2020 presidential election will take center stage, there are a number of other local and state positions that will be filled.

For the first time since 1966, both of Georgia’s U.S. Senate seats will be on the ballot. Senator David Purdue’s seat was already scheduled to be on the ballot this year. The retirement of Senator Johnny Isakson earlier this year opened up the second seat for a special election.

There are also U.S. Congressional races, as well as ones for Georgia house and senate representatives from Forsyth. At the county level, multiple offices will be on the ballot - from Commissioner to Sheriff.

To help ensure a smooth election process, our Voter Registration and Elections office has been busy over the past year. In October 2019, the Forsyth County Board of Voter Registrations and Elections approved multiple precinct and polling place changes, including the addition of five new Election Day polling places. Cards with the new precinct locations have been mailed to affected residents.

In addition to in-person voting on primary and election days, the county offers many ways for advance voting. And if you are out of the county on one of these days, you can fill out an absentee ballot to ensure you are able to participate in elections this year.

And you can always check your polling place, see election dates and learn how to register to vote from links on our website.

On another matter, there will be major repairs to the Big Creek Greenway between McFarland Parkway and Fowler Park. I will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
