EDITORIAL

This year holds profound significance for all of us, as it marks the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It is a moment of great joy and gratitude, for we are blessed to be guided by such a compassionate, wise, and visionary being—a true bodhisattva. Yet alongside our joy, this milestone also brings a tender sense of concern and uncertainty about what the future may hold for Tibet as His Holiness grows older. Our struggle for freedom and self-determination, our fight against injustice and oppression, and the very survival of our identity as Tibetans are inseparably bound to His Holiness’s life and guidance.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government continues to intensify its oppression inside Tibet. Human rights organizations have reported that conditions there are among the worst in the world—even worse than in North Korea. Tibetan language and culture are being systematically dismantled. Children are forcibly sent to colonial boarding schools, where they are indoctrinated with communist ideology and a distorted history. The desperate cries of our people are evident in the 157 Tibetans who self-immolated in an ultimate act of protest to make their voices heard. Today, the very existence of the Tibetan people is in grave danger. Tibet and TCV need your support more than ever—we cannot afford to be complacent.

At this critical juncture, it is vital for Tibetans, our friends, and all conscientious people who believe in justice, truth, and peaceful coexistence to strengthen their resolve and work collectively with renewed determination. TCV remains steadfast in carrying forward the vision and legacy of His Holiness. The stories in this edition reflect only a small part of its efforts and commitment. None of this, however, would have been possible without the continued support and encouragement of our friends, sponsors, donors, and well-wishers.

Let us, therefore, dedicate our energy and resources to the noble cause of nurturing a well-informed, confident, and compassionate generation—one that will carry forward His Holiness’s values and vision, see the world as one global family, and work tirelessly to make it a better place for all.

We take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our sponsors and donors, the board members of our partner associations, alumni associations, friends and well-wishers, the Central Tibetan Administration, and the people and Government of India for their invaluable and selfless support.

We fervently pray for the long and healthy life of His Holiness so that he may continue to guide us from darkness to light and from suffering to happiness.

TCV DHARAMSALA

Awareness program: four principal commitments of His Holiness the Dalai lama

On 20th May 2025, as part of the Year of Compassion initiative, Class XII students of Upper TCV School visited Tong-Len School to give presentation on “The Four Principal Commitments of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.” The program began with an introduction to His Holiness’s life and contributions, followed by presentations on his four commitments: promoting human values, fostering inter-religious harmony, preserving Tibetan culture, and reviving ancient Indian knowledge. The students enriched their presentations with slideshows, anecdotes, and a quiz, and also organized a “Kindness Ball Game” to encourage reflection on compassion in daily life. The session received positive feedback from teachers and students, who appreciated both the content and creativity. Many expressed feelings inspired to embody compassion, mindfulness, and kindness in their own lives.

Cultivating Emotional Well-being and Resilience in Students

5th and 6th August 2025, Upper TCV School organized two programs under the Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning (SEE/SEEL) initiative. A session for Classes I–V was facilitated by the Philosophy teacher at Dekyi Tsering hall. Highlighting the importance of integrating social, emotional, and ethical skills into education, Geshe Ngawang Delek la led a short meditation session, teaching students the value of mindfulness and emotional balance. This was followed by a mindfulness activity led by Mrs. Tsering Chodon, the school counsellor where students practiced awareness through a guided “candy exercise.” The session concluded with a Q&A, where students actively engaged and reflected on mindfulness practices.

A seminar on “Dealing with Everyday Problems using the SEEL Approach” was conducted for Classes VI and above, with around 700 students participating. The resource person, Geshe Lobsang Dakpa la, delivered an insightful talk, weaving in practical strategies, anecdotes, and pre-collected student questions. The interactive session allowed students to directly engage with the speaker, making the seminar meaningful and impactful.

Both the sessions were highly enriching, equipping students with practical tools of meditation, mindfulness, and SEEL strategies to enhance their academic journey and personal growth.

Memory of a lifetime

In the summer heat of Dharamsala, Upper TCV brought joy and happiness to the heart of 400 children who stayed back during the school summer holiday. Certainly, this experience and memories are going stay alive in the children’s heart from a long-long time.

Arranging picnic for so many children was not easy but the meticulous planning and collective efforts from the mothers and other staff made the joyous event possible. The Honey restaurant was picked as the picnic spot because it is secured from all the sides and have large swimming pool and a decent space for fun. Children were taken for picnic in batches of 100 children in turn. Children enjoyed swimming to their heart content since it was a whole day and a night outing. It was remarkable day filled with food and fun, music and dance.

Bringing smile on the children’s face was a great way to celebrate the year of compassion and living up to our mission. TCV Dharamsala express gratitude to TIBET FRAUENORGANIZATION SCHWEIZ for sponsoring the project and Lobsang Tenzin la for raising the remaining fund.

Workshop on Child-Centered Approach

On 11th March 2025, a workshop on the Child-Centered Approach was held at Dekyi Tsering Hall for teachers from all sections and McLeod Day School. The session aimed to empower teachers with strategies that prioritize learners’ needs and interests, fostering a more engaging and productive learning environment. The first presentation focused on the key principles of child-centered learning, highlighting how it promotes self-reliance and active participation through exploration and experimentation. The second session addressed Project-Based Learning (PBL), with insights from action research conducted in the classroom. The speaker shared both the challenges and potential of PBL in developing students’ skills and preparing them for real-world contexts.

The workshop sparked teachers’ curiosity to explore learner-centered methods and motivated many to shift from teacher-led instruction to student-led learning. Supported by Global Affairs Canada under SIP, the program encouraged collaborative reflection on how such approaches could be implemented effectively in classrooms.

TCV BYLAKUPPE

Plantation Drive in Honour of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th Birth Anniversary

In honour of the 90th birth anniversary of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and as part of the observance of this year as the Year of Compassion, TCV Bylakuppe planted 113 saplings around its campus. Greenery not only enhances the beauty of the campus but also enriches the quality of air by releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.

One of the principal commitments of His Holiness the Dalai Lama has always been environmental protection. Today, global warming and climate change pose a serious threat to all forms of life on Earth, making it our shared responsibility to restore and preserve ecologi-

cal balance. The world must rise above narrow self-interest and work toward the greater good of humanity and every living being on this planet. Our effort, though a small and humble step in comparison to the magnitude of the crisis, reflects the belief that if every individual contributes, together we can minimize the risks and move toward a greener, healthier tomorrow. Through this plantation drive, we also aimed to educate and sensitize our children about environmental protection, showing them how even a single person can make a meaningful difference.

This initiative resonates deeply with the theme of the Year of Compassion. By striving for a safer and more sustainable world, we extend compassion not only to ourselves and our fellow human beings, but also to the countless other life forms that share our Mother Earth.

We Are Blessed – A Tribute Through Song

Tibetans are truly blessed to have a visionary and compassionate leader in His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. To celebrate this fortune, the senior school students composed a heartfelt song titled “Tibetans Are Blessed” (བོད་མི་ཚོ་བསོད་ནམ་ཆེའོ།). The song is dedicated to the farsighted leadership of His Holiness, whose guidance has helped the Tibetan people in exile flourish as one of the most resilient and successful refugee communities in the world.

The lyrics also pay tribute to the Middle Way Approach, envisioned by His Holiness as a pragmatic, balanced, and enduring solution to the Tibetan issue—a true win-win path that reflects both wisdom and compassion. In a time when the world faces deep divisions, His Holiness stands as a rare leader who unites people on the basis of shared humanity and universal

values. The world today needs more leaders like him— compassionate, inclusive, and visionary.

The song was beautifully performed by the school’s star singers Tenzin Palden (Class XII-D) and Tenzin Dickey (Class IX-D). Adding depth and melody to the composition were the talented young musicians Tenzin Nordon, Kunga Tseten, and Kunga Jorden. The students were guided with expertise and care by their teachers, Lhakpa Dhondup la (Tibetan teacher) and Dawa Tsering la (music teacher).

This tribute in song is both a celebration of gratitude and an expression of hope. Through music, the students have conveyed their deep reverence for His Holiness’s vision and compassion—reminding us all of how blessed the Tibetan people are to walk under his guidance.

TCV LADAKH

TCV Ladakh paid tribute to its founding fathers

“The root of all goodness lies in the soil of appreciation of goodness”. Gratitude is a value that only warms up the heart of one who receives it but also bring joy to those who expresses it. This summer TCV Ladakh paid tribute to its founding fathers through a heartwarming event titled “GRATITUDE”. It was the vision and guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the tireless hard work and leadership of Ama Jetsun Pema la and late Gen Tenzin la, the first Director of TCV Ladakh that gave birth to what is today known as the ‘Oasis in the desert’, TCV Ladakh.

On the barren mountainous terrain of Leh, Ladakh and remote Jangthang area under inhospitable climatic condition, TCV Ladakh really emerged as an ‘Oasis in the desert’ bringing hope, light and joy to thousands of families in the region.

Five teachers from the senior school reflected on the lives and contribution of the founding figures and how their creation of TCV impacted the lives of thousands of children and their families in the region. The event was organized to celebrate three milestone:

• The 90th Birth Anniversary of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

• The 85th Birth Anniversary of Ama Jetsun Pema la

• The upcoming 50th Anniversary of TCV Ladakh

The event also reflected on the book ‘Voice for the Voiceless’ by His Holiness, reinforcing the spirit of compassion, service, and resilience that has defined our school’s journey.

Thank You India & Thank You Ladakh

Two very important milestones converge for TCV Ladakh this year. First is the 90th birth anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and second is the completion of 50 year of service for the well-being and education of the orphans, needy and destitute children. To make this year special, TCV Ladakh is conducting wide range of scholastic, cultural and other programs.

It was felt that a program to thank the host nation, India and our immediate host, people of Ladakh would be an apt way to make the occasion more glorious. And what could be better than an exchange program to foster mutual understanding? With the noble intention aimed at strengthening cordial ties between Tibetans and locals, a week-long exchange program was conducted at TCV Ladakh where we hosted 100 students from 9 different schools from the locality.

An enriching and vibrant program was chalked out that includes interactive sessions, lectures, activities and educational workshops to acquaint the students about the values and education that TCV gives to its children, which make it different and special. The students were introduced to:

• SEE Learning (Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning)

• Tibetan Handwriting

• Traditional Tibetan Musical Instruments

• Buddhist Philosophy

These sessions gave the students valuable exposure to both modern and traditional learning, and deepened their understanding of Tibetan culture and values. The concluding ceremony featured an Elocution contest among the four different TCV school houses both English and Tibetan on the topic; the Four Principal Commitments of His Holiness. The contest helped the guest students and the others get an insight into the important topic.

A question answer session allowed participants to raise their doubt and reflect on their experiences, making the conclusion deeply meaningful and inspiring. The entire week was a beautiful celebration of learning, gratitude, and lasting friendship among the youth of Ladakh.

BOOKS & BISCUITS (B&B)

Books & Biscuits” is a heartwarming initiative by Mrs. Tenzin Pelmo, English Resource Teacher at TCV. The name ‘B&B’ might sound familiar, but here it carries a special meaning—it is a cozy corner within the Children’s Village where children can immerse themselves in books while enjoying biscuits during their free time. This simple yet thoughtful idea not only nurtures a love for reading but also gives children a little treat to brighten their day.

Reading is one of the most important skills for becoming a lifelong learner, and B&B makes that journey joyful. The first B&B was set up last year for junior students, and their overwhelming enthusiasm quickly showed its value. Seeing the positive

impact it had on children’s learning and engagement, the Village management requested Mrs. Pelmo to extend the initiative to the middle and senior schools as well.

Today, B&B stands as more than just a reading corner—it is a place where books and biscuits come together to fuel both the mind and the heart

TCV SUJA

Small steps toward a Cleaner and Greener Future Together

Environmental sustainability is one of the core values at our school which also align perfectly with the principal commitment of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The successful implementation of the Zero Burning Waste Policy and the consistent execution of environmental awareness programs, segregation practices, and cleanup initiatives reflect our school’s unwavering dedication to environmental protection.

These two years have been a testament to what a committed school community can achieve. Our journey from waste segregation to world-record participation showcases a model of environmental responsibility that we are proud to share with the world.

Over the past two years, we have made significant strides toward reducing our ecological footprint. From implementing a successful Zero Burning Waste Policy to engaging in community-wide cleanup initiatives, our school community has actively participated in preserving and protecting the environment. This report outlines the various activities, collaborations, and achievements undertaken between 2024 and 2025.

Zero Burning Waste Policy (Since 2024)

One of the cornerstone initiatives adopted by the school in 2024 has been the Zero Burning Waste Policy. The school eliminated the practice of burning any form of waste on campus. This shift has had a positive impact on local air quality and environmental health.

Key Measures for Implementation:

Complete Waste Segregation: All waste generated within the school premises is now properly segregated at

the source into biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclable categories. We have a proper All -Weather waste segregation Centre called Recycling Centre where Recycling club students collect and sort out the waste once a week. This practice has been the foundation of the successful implementation of the zero-burning policy.

Monitoring and Compliance:

Designated waste bins have been placed across the school to encourage correct disposal practices. The school’s eco-club led by the school Principal and Headmaster monitors segregation compliance and meet periodically for improvement and changes needed.

Awareness and Education Initiatives

To ensure the community understands and supports sustainable waste management, the school has undertaken several awareness programs.

Workshops and Assemblies:

Educational awareness programs highlighting the importance of waste segregation and zero burning were conducted during school assemblies and special gatherings. These sessions were led by representatives from Waste Warriors and the school principal.

Student Engagement:

Students actively participated in interactive discussions and presentations, which reinforced the urgency of reducing pollution and managing waste responsibly. Students of Recycling Group actively take part in collection of wastes, segregation and keeping the waste properly in the sorting facility so that it can be sold and sent from time to time.

Plogging and Cleanup Drives

The school conducted multiple plogging drives—a combination of walking and litter collection—in and around the school campus as well as nearby public areas. These events were aimed at instilling a sense of civic responsibility and environmental stewardship among students.

Cleanup Drives:

Several cleanup drive programs were successfully organized throughout the year. These events saw participation from students, staff, and volunteers, contributing to cleaner surroundings and increased awareness.

Participation in Global Cleanup Efforts

On June 5th, 2025, the school took part in the Largest Mountain Cleanup Drive organized by Waste Warriors during World Environment Day. This monumental event set a world record and involved massive volunteer participation across the Himalayan region. The Eco-Warriors from our school enthusiastically contributed, demonstrating our commitment to global environmental causes.

Athletic Championship – 7th Inter-School Athletic Meet 2024

The 7th Inter-School Athletic Meet, held during the grand celebration of the 64th Anniversary of TCV School Upper Dharamsala in 2024, proved to be a remarkable and memorable event for TCV Suja. Participating with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship, the athletes demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and team spirit throughout the championship.

TCV school Suja, emerged victorious in several track and field events, securing top positions in sprints, relays, long-distance races, and field events such as long jump and shot put. The athletes’ hard work and consistent training were evident in their outstanding performances, which led us to clinch the Overall Championship Trophy at this prestigious meet.

This achievement not only reflects the strength of the athletic program but also the collective effort of our sports department, coaches, and the unwavering support from the school community. The event fostered unity and healthy competition among the participating

TCV schools and highlighted the importance of physical education in holistic development.

TCV GOPALPUR

A group of students from TCV Gopalpur too had the opportunity add fervor to the celebration with their dancing prowess.

Understanding His Holiness

The month of April was dedicated to appreciating the work and messages of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Just as the Lord Buddha did, His Holiness too encourages followers to analyze and investigate to establish the genuineness of anything. To help children gain a little understanding of the depth of His Holiness’s wisdom and compassion, series of activities highlighting his contribution toward promotion of oneness of humanity, religious-harmony, world peace, revival of ancient Nalanda knowledge, environment conservation at a global level and promotion of human values such as love and compassion, empathy and selflessness that can lead to freedom from suffering. For the Tibetans, it becomes all the more important to appreciate the immeasurable sacrifices, hard work and efforts made to uplift our lives. His Holiness has been a source of hope and strength. It is his far-sighted vision and tireless hard work that Tibetans today are flourishing in exile. It is his charisma and statesmanship that Tibet issue is still alive on the global stage.

The program included poetry recitation, speech delivery, one-act plays, presentations, video screenings related to His Holiness, guest talks, exhibitions, and finally, a display of each class’s presentation in the school foyer. The topics covered included:

His Holiness’s compassionate work and achievements

* His schooling, education and early life.

* The awards received

* His initiatives to resolve the issue of Tibet.

* His engagements with political and religious leaders, as well as intellectuals from various disciplines

* The Four Principal Commitments of His Holiness

*

On April 30th, an exhibition celebrating the life and work of His Holiness the Dalai Lama was conducted at the school auditorium. It included classwise project presentations, speeches, and reflections by teacher representatives from each class, as well as heartfelt explanations and commentaries on His Holiness’s legacy and commitments.

The month-long program not only deepened our students’ understanding of His Holiness’s life and commitments but also inspired them to live by the universal values of compassion, peace, and responsibility that he tirelessly embodies.

TCV SELAKUI

Wholesome and multiskill education

TCV Selakui has earned a reputation of being a best school not only among the Tibetan schools but also among the private and Government Indian schools across the state of Uttarakhand.

But academics accomplishment alone is not considered adequate for a wholesome growth. In our bid to give children hands-on experience and exposure on multiple trade and employable skills, we initiated various programs and activities. Organic farming of vegetables

and fruit such as Okra, Eggplant and Dragon fruit is one such initiative which not only help children develop valuable farming skills but also enhance the quality of the diet of children as ultimately it is the children who are going to relish them. It also contributes toward sustainable development of school.

Students tilled a small agricultural plot and sowed okra seeds at the end of April. The seeds have germinated, and the field is now covered with okra plants. Despite continuous rainfall leading to weed growth, students are diligently weeding the field during their morning farming hours.

they delved into basic agricultural techniques, including tillage, seedbed preparation, composting methods, and food processing. The Dragon fruit farming too was a phenomenal success. We are incredibly proud of our students’ dedication to scientific exploration, environmental responsibility, and community engagement.

Taking the initiative further, the school planted 90 lemon trees on the school campus in honour of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday. This green initiative was carried out after the conclusion of the main celebration program, symbolizing the values of compassion, sustainability, and care for future generations –values deeply cherished by His Holiness.

The school community extends heartfelt thanks to our dear friend and long-time supporter, Ms. Lise, whose generous financial contribution made this plantation drive possible. This effort not only honored the legacy of His Holiness but also served as a practical learning experience for our students on environmental responsibility and sustainable living.

“You may have the guns, you may have all this power, but you have already lost. Come: join the winning side. His Holiness [the Dalai Lama] and the Tibetan people are on the winning side”

TIBETAN CHILDREN'S VILLAGE

CONSOLIDATED BALANCE SHEET AS ON 31st MARCH, 2025

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion” His Holiness The Dalai Lama

TIBETAN CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

“My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness”. His Holiness The Dalai Lama

FOUR PRINCIPAL COMMITMENTS OF HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA

1. Promotion of Universal Human Values:

This involves encouraging basic human values like compassion, tolerance, forgiveness, and self-discipline for all people, regardless of their background.

2. Promotion of Religious Harmony: His Holiness advocates for understanding and respect among the world’s major religious traditions, recognizing that they share common messages of love and compassion.

3. Preservation of Tibetan Culture and Environment: This commitment focuses on protecting Tibet’s unique Buddhist culture, a culture rooted in non-violence and peace, and conserving the fragile Tibetan plateau environment, which significantly impacts the ecology of Asia and the world.

4. Revival of Ancient Indian Wisdom: This involves bringing back the rich knowledge of ancient India concerning the mind, emotions, and practices like non-violence (Ahimsa) and compassion (Karuna) to benefit contemporary society.

HOW YOU CAN HELP TCV

Tibetan Children’s Village is a charitable organisation, almost entirely dependent on the kindness and generosity of friends, supporters and donors. We are fortunate that international aid agencies and individuals have always been sympathetic to the Tibetan situation and have responded well to our appeal for the help.

While efforts continue to be made towards becoming self-reliant and independent through different self-sustaning ventures like the TCV Enterprises, parents own contributions, TCV membership, alumni and other projects to generate internal sources of revenue, we are still challenged with so many needy children to look after from within the Tibetan comunity in exile, the Himalayan regions and those that escape out of Tibet. As a result it is impossible to sustain the life-giving works of TCV without help from outside. Therefore, The Tibetan Children’s Village will always stand in need of assistance from its friends and supporters.

You can help in any of the following ways :

-Sponsor a Child at US $ 60 per month

-Send donations towards the following projects :

a) School improvement

b) Outreach Programs

c) Educational Programs and Publications

d) Specific Projects

e) Medical Fund

f) Scholarship Fund for Higher Studies

g) Emergency Fund
