Foggy Days

and froggy nights AFTER a month of rain, this region is pretty much frog heaven. Teeny tiny toadlets and big happy froggies have it good around here, with low lying areas, poorly drained paddocks and potholes suddenly converted to soppingly deluxe amphibian condos with jacuzzis, valet parking for their amphibious vehicles and kids’ clubs for the tadpoles (read: swamps.) Yup. The frogs are loving it. Have you heard them? They’re almost deafening! The Daylesford and District Horticultural Society are hosting a Local Frog Species info night for frog loving locals Tuesday, September 3, from 7:30pm. Learn which frogs live in the area and how to encourage them to visit your garden. The session will be held at the John Mitchell Hall, Uniting Church, Central Springs Road. Bring a plate for supper. (Probably not appropriate to bring a plate of frogs’ legs. Just sayin’.) For more info contact Cecile Felix 5348 1436.

They don’t make ‘em like they used to…

THE THEATRE Royal in Castlemaine is one of the great treasures of the region. This historic theatre has been entertaining the locals for over 150 years, and has truly seen (or showed) it all, from the silent films, to messy moshpits, and winners of Oscars, Grammys and ARIAs. And when it comes to the Classics, she has certainly screened more than most. So, it was only fitting that a Castlemaine Classic Film Festival was established. The 2nd annual festival will be held Friday, Sept 6, ‘til Sunday, Sept 8. The exciting and diverse program has been curated by well respected film critic John Waldie, and what’s even more exciting is that The Theatre Royal has a brand new schmancy-pants digital projection and audio system, so the classics will be looking and sounding extra awesome. Season tickets are $128/$110conc. Individual sessions $18/$15. For more info and the full program: theatreroyal.info or call 5472 1196. 2

Art, sunshine & daffodils welcome back spring

OH HELLO spring! There you are… you and your sunshine and daffodils... welcome back! The annual uprising of spring daffodils really smacks you in the face with their vibrant happy yellow, and that orange-middle-trumpety-bit. (Clearly that’s the botanic description.) Spring daffodils herald the arrival of SPRIIIING and their sunny disposition slams the door shut on Winter and her cold, dark, brutal heart. This time of year Kyneton swims in a sea of gold, as the people celebrate the humble daffodil with a festival held in its honour: The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival. This year the festival will be held Thursday, September 5, ‘til Sunday, September 15. The festival program confidently boasts something for everyone. And we would like to back that statement up, as the festival flaunts everything from flowers to ferrets, art shows to antiques, one-act plays to one-off Persian carpets, buskers, bands, breakfasts, books, scarecrows, Scottish highland dancing and a grand parade. *Phew* (and just quietly… that’s not the half of it…) The Daffodil and Arts Festival officially opens on Thursday, September 5, at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, (81 Mollison Street) with a gala grand opening event. The Daffodil Art Prize, the Youth Art Awards, the Shop Window Awards, and the Photography Prize will be announced from 7pm. These exhibitions as well as the Indigenous Art Exhibition will be open at the Mechanics Hall throughout the festival. The Hall will be a festival hub, with information on events available throughout the festival. The festival concludes with a Grand Parade and Fair from 12:30pm, Sunday, September 15. The Parade on Mollison Street will feature floats, bands, dancing and classic cars. The Fair (from 11:45am) will feature all the fave stomach churning rides and there’s more kid friendly stuff at the Mechanics Reserve. Including an animal nursery. Awww. Daffodils and baby animals… Great to have you back spring! For all the info call 5422 2282, or go to kynetondaffodilarts.org.au.

Roll on spring

yaaaaaaaaaay!

LOOK, to be honest, we’re the tiniest bit sad that winter is over. Wait… no, actually we’re not. Sorry, was feeling nostalgic there for a moment. (One singular moment.) That mystique the fog exudes when it rolls in for three months loses its mystique-ness after 20 minutes, then you’re stuck with moss growing on your rolling stones ‘til the sun returns one-quarter-of-a-year later. And yes, the rolling stones do gather moss around here. We’ve seen them rolling down Central Springs Road. (Or maybe we didn’t, sorry, it was hard to tell, it was foggy.) One thing that is LOTS more exciting in spring is the Daylesford Farmers’ Market. Saturday, September 7, head along to Daylesford Primary School Oval (Vincent Street) in (hopefully) blinding sunshine*, and load your basket with luscious fresh local produce. The market runs from 9am -1pm. For more info go to dmproduce.com. au. (*Sunshine not guaranteed.)

The fast and the ferret-ious

THAT moment when the furry scarf around someone’s neck comes alive… yeah that. Ferrets are, well, cute furry neck warmers for some, feisty farm-hands for many, scary rat-faced-critters for many more, and turbo charged pocket rockets for others. In Kyneton, once a year, ferrets are popped up onto a pedestal and cheered on by their adoring public, at the annual Kyneton Ferret Races. Held as part of the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival, the Ferret Races are held in the spirit of fun. The Victorian Ferret Association (yes, there is one) will be taking part, along with local ferrets, and the fastest of the furry critters will take home trophies, fame and the glory of victory. (Move over Black Caviar.) The ferret races will be held Saturday, September 7, from 10:30am at the Kyneton Mechanics Reserve (Baynton Street.) For more information go to kynetondaffodilarts.org.au 6

Turn up and tune up

for the Battle of the Buskers

BUSKERS. They are many and varied. There are so many different types of busker that you can’t put them into a pigeon hole. Although we are certain that this has been attempted, and he probably earned $17.50 as a result. The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival has invited buskers of all shapes, sizes and with varying degrees of skill and tunefulness to play their hearts out in Kyneton on Saturday, (morning) September 7, along Mollison, Piper and High Streets. The buskers performing will be playing for prize money, so the gauntlet has been thrown down, the challenge has been set, let the battle of the buskers begin. (Bring along a few gold coins to throw into the hat or violin case if you hear or see something you like.) If you would like to busk on the day get your entry in fast – call 5422 2282. For more info go to kynetondaffodilarts.org.au.

Make Father’s Day a sock-free zone

THERE are only two types of Dad in this world. Dads who can do a BBQ, and Dads who can’t do a BBQ. Oh no, wait a minute, that second type of Dad doesn’t actually exist. ALL Dads can cook a barbie. And let’s face it. It’s usually awesome. (And don’t they know it? Dads LOVE their moment of glory behind the hotplate). But how much more glorious would the glory be if they actually MADE THEIR OWN SNAGS?! Wow bragging rights FOR.EV.ER. Piper Street Food Co. (89B Piper St. Kyneton) hosts regular charcuterie classes for those interested in creating traditional gourmet delicacies. Saturday, September 7, they’re holding a Sausage Making Class for Father’s Day. Send dad along and he’ll learn how to make the most delectable sausages, which you’ll then benefit from at every barbeque until the end of time. (Ahh, the gift that keeps on giving.) 10:30am-1:30pm. $160pp. For more info and bookings call 5422 3553 8

Good times

and grumpy neighbours

YOU’VE HAD them… They park out the front of your place making it tricky to get into your driveway, they have noisy parties, or worse, they hate your noisy parties, they’ve hit your wheelie bin more than once and they’ve called the council on your dog. Grumpy neighbours. They make you go grrrrr. That is, unless you’re talking about Victorian based trio Grumpy Neighbour… who are actually a really quite brilliant folk-soaked pub band, and probably make quite nice neighbours. They might even collect your mail and water your pot plants if you go away. Awww. The Grumpy Neighbour band boast beer-swillin’ toe tappers, beer-spillin’ footstompers and beer-dilutin’ tearjerkers. And they’ve played their brand of folky poppy country all over the place for over 10 years. (Which would no doubt make their neighbours happy.) On Saturday, September 7, Grumpy Neighbour will wipe the grumpy off your face as they take to the stage at The Savoia Hotel (69 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) from 9pm. Yee har. Entry is free. For more info call the pub 5348 2314, or check out their website grumpyneighbour.com

September 7.

time to be politically correct

ON SEPTEMBER 7, like it or not, things are going to change. Even before you head to your assigned cardboard booth with your little pencil, and armfuls of pamphlets from the parties, things will change. In FACT… The decision has already been made, and it will affect each and every voter in Daylesford! This year the POLLING BOOTH HAS MOVED!! (Cue dramatic music for effect… Dah Dah Daaaaaaah!) That’s right. Whether you’re green, left, right, donkey or undecided, this year the Daylesford Polling Booth will be at St Michael’s Primary School (not Daylesford Primary as usual). St Michael’s is at 29 Smith Street, Daylesford. The polling booth opens at 8am and closes at 6pm. Now, just a last minute heads up… without getting too political, (tricky considering the subject) remember to vote for the policies, not the person. Written, spoken and authorized by lost magazine for the lost party Daylesford. Right-o. As you were.

Shine on

you crazy blackberry

THIS time of year berries are harder to come by (and cost more by weight) than gold nuggets. The scarcity and beauty of these jewel-like fruits has people everywhere comparing them to precious stones and swooning over them in their display-case-like plastic punnets. Great lyrics have been penned to their beauty, c’mon, you’ve all heard Blueberries are a Girl’s Best Friend, Lucy in the Sky with Raspberries and Shine Bright like a Gooseberry? Massive hits. All of them. If you want your plants to explode with berries this summer there are tricks to make them providers for mass consumption. The Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) is hosting a Bountiful Berry Workshop: Sunday, September 8, from 11am. Learn how to prep the soil, mulch, trellis and prune for a gob stuffingly beautiful crop of bumper berry bling. Cost $35. (Diggers members $25) Call St Erth for more info and bookings: 5368 6514. 12

Hitting above

your Pennyweight

MUSICIANS walk among us unnoticed. You can’t tell if that chap over there with the scarf and the newspaper plays double bass or if he’s more of a trombone guy. You can’t tell if your barista plays classical guitar or if she’s a drummer in a punk band. (The mohawk and tiny silver drumsticks on the chain around her neck are a decent hint though…) Pennyweight is a Daylesford band heading back into the studio this month to record their second album. You see, regular humans don’t just walk into a studio and record albums… they pick up the kids from school, do the groceries and have day jobs. (Actually, Pennyweight do too, we’ve seen them… not that we were spying guys, promise.) These five musos in particular, walking among us here in Daylesford, are an earthy contemporary folk band with loads of spirit and soul, gutsy rhythms, intricate melodies and moving lyrics. (In fact, songwriter Tony English won the Roddy Reed songwriting contest at Maldon Folk Festival recently for his song Leaving Liverpool – nice one!) Catch Pennyweight when they play The Radio Springs Hotel (1 High Street, Lyonville) Sunday, September 8 from 7pm, and the Shamrock Hotel (120 Mollison Street, Kyneton) Sunday, September 22, 1pm-3pm. Both gigs are free entry, because they’re locals and they love you.

Loaf

is where the heart is

US HUMAN types go a little bonkers in spring. Suddenly it seems like a good time to GET STUFF DONE! Spring cleaning, gardening, go camping, get a new hair do, and while we’re at it, why don’t we sell the house? There’s something about spring that makes us want to buy and sell property. And if you’re selling a home, well… they say the aroma of freshly baked bread entices buyers to part with their dough. (sorry) …But who has the time to bake bread? Huh? Actually, who even KNOWS how to do it? The clever cookies at the Creswick Neighbourhood Centre do, and they want to show you how it’s done. Sunday, September 8, 10am-2pm, learn the basic bread-making skills you need to create delicious loaves at home. Discuss different bread making techniques, and while your bread is rising, prepare and enjoy a homemade pizza for lunch. Cost $60. BYO apron. For more info and bookings go to creswicknc.org.au or call 5345 2356.

Run for fun

and East Timor

CASTLEMAINE is a long way from Lolotoe East Timor, but we’re pretty sure you can feel the love from here. A group of kind community minded peeps in Castlemaine and the Mount Alexander Shire have formed a group called Friends Of Lolotoe. They are raising money to not only help rebuild the Lolotoe community, but they’re also all about helping the East Timorese kids complete their education. On Sunday, September 8, the fundraiser ‘Run for East Timor’ fun run will be held at the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens (Downes Road.) There’s a 10.2k run, a 5.1km run/walk or a 2km walk to enter. (Register between 8am and 9am on the day). After the run get into the celebratory vibe of the day, and experience the friendship between our two countries with live music by Mystic Trio, food stalls, and lots of other fun stuff across the day. For more info on Friends of Lolotoe, and the Run for East Timor go to runforeasttimor.org.au. 16

It’s time to

rise and shine

WAKEY wakey… The great winter hibernation is over! Time to shake off the sleepy aura you’re carrying around, it’s time to get all bright eyed and bushy tailed. (We’ve always wanted a bushy tail… Basil Brush style… y’know.) Anyway, one superduper way to embrace the change in season and make yourself feel all shiny bright and ready for action is to haul your sleepy ass to a yoga retreat… and boy, do we know of a bewdy coming up this month in Hepburn Springs… The Yoga and Heartsong Retreat with Lisa Farinosi and Sun Hyland. Lisa and Sun led this weekend retreat last year and it was so wonderful and luscious and energising that they’ve decided to do it again. Friday, September 13, ‘til Sunday September 15 at Hepburn Springs Chalet (78 Main Road). Lisa will be teaching Ghatastha yoga, (otherwise known as Dynamic Vinyasa) which is a dynamic, flowing practice. The sequences awaken the energy channels within your body (sounds great after a lazy winter) and makes you feel all juiced up, vibrant and alive. Being re-energised you’ll be able to appreciate complete relaxation and recognise your inner stillness (which is different to the outer-stillness you have displayed on the couch for the past three months.) Sun Hyland will guide the group in singing/chanting and heartsongs. FYI… This is not an audition for The Voice or Australia’s Got Talent. You don’t have to be a ‘good’ singer to achieve a blissful state of yogic peace. Sun will lead the way. And when you’re not singing in harmony with Sun, he will take to the kitchen to cook delicious organic vegetarian feasts for all to share. The space at The Chalet - that will be your haven for the weekend - is a wonderfully warm and light, north facing room. A perfect space in which to awaken your heart, body and soul. Cost for the weekend is $395 and this includes all food and twin share accommodation at the Hepburn Springs Chalet. For more information and bookings go to muktiyoga.com.au or search Yoga and Heartsong Retreat on Facebook.

A play date

in the kitchen

REMEMBER as a kid it was always way more fun to play with other kids’ toys? That Barbie Dream House at your neighbour’s place was WAY more exciting than your Barbie Campervan. Guess what? Nothing changes. It’s still so great to go to a friend’s place and play with their cool stuff. The kitchen at Lake House (4 King Street, Daylesford) has some very cool toys. If you fancy taking a Spring Cooking Masterclass at Lake House, it’s your big chance to play in their kitchen, expertly led by two Lake House chefs. At the Spring Masterclass (Sunday, Sept. 15) you’ll create a wonderful spring menu with delicious seasonal produce. The cooking session is three hours, followed by a sit down lunch of the dishes you have produced, and a folder of recipes to take home. Cost $280. Spaces limited to 12. (You’ll just have to put some of the toys on your Christmas list for Santa). For more info and bookings call 5348 3329. lakehouse.com.au

Too old, too slow too right

TRACTORS are good at two things: annoying you with their excruciating slowness on the highway, and pulling stuff. For the latter they are lauded, celebrated and have festivals held in their honour. There are tractor pull events held all over the world. Dedicated tractor pull associations have glossy websites, halls of fame, and there are literally days of tractor pull videos up on YouTube (in case you’ve got a few spare days to dedicate to the cause.) If you prefer the stink of diesel, the mud and dust and testosterone in person, you’re in luck! The annual Metcalfe Vintage Tractor Pull will be held at the Metcalfe Recreation Reserve (30 Cascades Road) Sunday, September 15, 10am-4pm. Witness big old things pulling big old things. It’s a seriously competitive day, with farmers from all over vying for the title. There’ll be loads of other displays and fun stuff for the kids, as well as other stalls and food available. Nice weather for kites… and ducks

METEOROLOGICALLY speaking, September is a windy month. Notably, one of the windiest months of the year here in Victoria. Don’t know what that’s about… perhaps it’s vivacious sassy spring blowing away dull old boresome winter? Perhaps it’s the big bad wolf, a little out of his ‘hood? Or perhaps it’s just windy… and who cares anyway? Ok, LOTS of us care around here. Because those windy days herald the beginning of SPRING. Sayonara winter and your ice, sleet and mud. All hail spring! With your erm… ice, sleet, and um, ok, more mud… BUT IT’S SPRING!! There’s blossom and stuff, and twee calendars everywhere say it’s time for lambies and bunnies and daffodils and we’re running with it ok?! Coz our toes are iceblocks and we’re OVER IT. Ahem. Apologies. Rant over… what were we saying? Wind! That’s right. Windy days are bad for hair, tricky on a footy field, and a bit annoying if you’re a bride with a long veil… But that’s it. Windy days are RAD if you are into windsurfing, generating electricity with turbines, getting clothes dried or flying kites. And we at lost magazine are into ALL of those things. Especially kites. (…and we haven’t actually tried windsurfing, but it looks like we’d love it.) The Dean Kite Festival is on Sunday, September 15, at the Dean Recreation Reserve, from midday ‘til 4pm. With the promise of spring wind we’re hoping for more than a breeze and less than a cyclone to get as many kites up into the sky and flying! Bring along your kite and send it up high! There’ll be kite making workshops ($10), some awesome kite demos, extreme kite buggying demonstrations and fun stuff with the Ballarat Community Circus. Back on ground, there’ll be a sausage sizzle going and afternoon tea to be shared as well. Entry is free. (Small cost for food.) For more information on the Dean Kite Festival call Liz on 0421 674 827 or email lizkelly1967@gmail.com. You are welcome to fly your kite at the Dean Recreation Reserve at any time, just BYO gumboots (and wind machine if it’s still). 22

Outpost

taking a stand for local art

FUNNY how this region attracts so many artists. And not just wanna-be artists… Daylesford and surrounds is home to oodles of real, live, actual, working, exhibiting, nationally and internationally renowned, awe inspiring artists, all blessed with rare gifts of artistic talent. Hmmm, must be something in the water. Many of these artists work from home, or share studio space with other clever creative folk, and exhibit and sell their work individually where and when they can. Until now, there has not been a dedicated gallery space where exclusively local artists can show and sell their work, that is easily accessible for all. Which seems a little crazy… but we did say until now… A pop up gallery called Outpost has just, um, ‘popped up’ at the Daylesford Post Office corner (corner of Central Springs Road and Vincent Street, under the clock tower.) This space is a dedicated gallery for the region’s diverse creative community to show and sell their work. Hooray! On display and for sale are ceramic pieces, etchings and other prints, sculpture, painting, photography and woodwork. As we go to print there are twelve local artists at the pop up with work for sale. The space is small and cosy, and the diversity of work on display is exciting. In the few weeks they have been open, many wonderful pieces of art have found new homes, locally, down the freeway to Melbourne and beyond. As with all things pop up, the space is not guaranteed to them for the long term. The great hope is that they will be able to keep the lease ongoing, but until then, they man (and woman) the Outpost as a weekends-only stronghold to serve art to the people. We salute you Outposters! Outpost is open Saturday and Sundays 10am ‘til 5pm. (Watch this space though, as the artists have plans to stay popped up as long as possible!) Sales are cash only. For more info on the Outpost (if you’d like to help out with the rent, and/or cups of coffee and bickies for the weekend volunteers, call in and say g’day) or email Kath Wratten: kath@kathwratten.com. 24

Pop some art up into your life

THE TERM ‘Struggling Artist’ exists because it’s true. The easy bit is creating beautiful art. The struggle comes when it’s time to market it, exhibit it, put it up on a pedestal, (or wall) and with it, your heart and soul. That’s the struggle. We live in a community full of wonderful creative arty peeps. They paint, sculpt, print, photograph, sketch and create works of fine art daily, and the Hepburn Shire Council has signed on to do a feasibility study into The Pop Up Art Project. This project would give our artists a helping hand to show and sell their work. The Pop Up Art project is in the early stages of consultation with the artistic community and all artists are invited to join in the process to make the project a reality. The next meeting is a focus group to be held Thursday, September 19, at Lucky Strike, 33 Fraser Street Clunes, from 7pm. For more info and to get involved in this awesome arts initiative go to popupart.com.au.

I’ve got Friday on my mind

NOTHING feels quite like a Friday. After midday on a Friday you can physically feel the pre-weekend amplification of awesomeness. This is most certainly one of our favourite times of the week. (Followed by Friday night, all day Saturday and all day Sunday.) Friday evenings the vibe lifts, the working week is dissolves away into I-can’t-rememberit-already, shoulders ease and there’s a greater smile-percapita ratio than, say… Monday, (that’s for sure). The Friday night excellentness is heightened by happy hours and live tunes, and the Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street) shall help ease you into the perfect start to your weekend Friday, September 20, with Kestrel and his unique style of blissful harmonic singing and super-excellent intricate guitar grooves. The Glenlyon General Store hosts free live music each Friday from 6pm-8pm, and happy hour 5-6pm. More info call 5348 7922 or Facebook: Glenlyon General Store. 26

The Rex

more awesomer than a T Rex

GUESS what Daylesford? Your Rex Theatre is brilliant. It hosts stage shows, live theatre, and cultural events, as well as screening the best films from around the globe. In case you hadn’t yet put two and two together, this means that you no longer have to do the 90km ‘round trip to Ballarat to see a movie any more! You got it! Not only do you save yourself oodles in petrol and parking money, but the movie tickets are cheaper, and there are better films on; kids, classics, new releases, old faves and limited release arthouse. (At the time of print the September program includes Behind the Candelabra, the story of Liberace, featuring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, and The World’s End, the latest action/comedy by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Check out the latest program online: therex.org.au or turn to page 37). Ticket Prices are: $14 (regular) $10 members. Tuesday nights regular tickets are $10 members $8. (Concession discounts available.) Now, if you haven’t yet been to The Rex, really it’s ok, we won’t dob… but we do gently nudge you in the general direction of 47-53 Vincent Street to go and take a look at its awesomeness. This month the cabaret comes to The Rex. Velvet Addiction is a musical comedy cabaret in the style of Forbidden Broadway. Take a peek into the office of psychiatrist Dr Miza Linnelli, who, with receptionist Methel Erman sets out to cure Broadway stars of their Velvet Addiction. This production by Shhhhh Productions stars Natasha York, Scott Hollingsworth and Matthew Hadgraft, brings to life Broadway hits from musicals such as Wicked, Cats, Spamalot, A Chorus Line, Cabaret, Rent and more… with a twist. This original piece has toured the country and will be in Daylesford for one night only, Friday, September 20, 8pm-10pm. For more information and bookings call 5348 1931 or go to therex.org.au 28

It’s the Vinyl Countdown

do do do dooo, do do do do doo…

JONATHON Welch has been a busy boy. Since the days of beginning the inspirational Choir of Hard Knocks, he has gone on to rehearse, conduct and sing with his many choirs all around the country. The Cho!r (his latest project, which happens to be Melbourne’s largest unauditioned non-professional choir) is heading to Daylesford for an afternoon of fun, uplifting songs and a bit of a trip down memory lane. On Sunday, September 22, The Cho!r will take to the stage at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) to perform The Vinyl Countdown. This performance showcases favourite tunes from the 60s and 70s including The Seekers, ABBA, The Beatles, Queen, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Aretha Franklin, and that’s just for starters… The show starts at 2:30. Pop goes the ‘gurge

WHAT kind of filth do you think a band called Regurgitator conjures when they name an album Dirty Pop Fantasy? Hmmm, we’re thinking it ain’t a chupa chup dropped in the dirt. (To us, that would be more of a dirty pop nightmare. Waaaah! Dirty pop! Nooooo!) Fortunately much loved musical funsters Regurgitator have had a bit more fun with their dirty pop fantasy than us, and created a new album with this very name. Regurgitator have hit the festival circuit in the past 12 months and have played the bestest of the fest-est-es from Meredith to The North West – and are all lubed up and ready to take album number eight on the road. The ‘Gurge shall storm the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine) on Friday, September 27, as part of their fantastical Dirty Pop Tour. Hoorah! Show is at 8pm. Tickets are $39. Getting back to The Basics

WALLY De Backer was somebody that Gotye used to know. And he used to be in a band called The Basics, along with two other musically gifted pals and they used to do shows in pubs and had something of a cult following. Then things got busy with the whole triple Grammy win thing, y’know… like it does, then one of the boys got malaria, and the other one did some nifty film work. Busy times indeed. The boys from The Basics have survived the last three years (well done especially to Kris – the malaria patient) and to top it all off they’ve recorded a new album, So Hard For You, so they’re hitting the road to play some tunes. Catch The Basics at The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves St, Castlemaine) Thursday, September 26, from 8:30pm. Tickets are $24 show only, or $59 dinner and show (dinner from 7pm) For more information and bookings call 5472 1196.

A long lunch

happens organically

FRIDAYS are traditionally reserved as the day of the long lunch. From Collins Street suits and their starched linen degustations, to besties and crumpled picnic blankets in parks, everyone likes to linger a little longer over lunch on a Friday, before heading back to work. (And pretending to look busy (and sober) until home time… Shhh, the boss will never know.) Friday, September 27, The Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) will host The Organic Gardener Readers’ Lunch from 11:30am. Hear talks by Clive Blazey and writer Penny Woodward (discussing herbs, organic pest solutions and heirloom, hybrid and GE seeds), and meet editor Steve Payne. Cost is $75pp, (members $65pp) and includes an organic lunch and dessert in the Garden Room. It also includes entry to the garden and a guided tour, (let’s face it, you won’t be going back to work). For more info and bookings call St Erth: 5368 6514. 32

Dinner and a movie in Daylesford

OVER THE YEARS there have been so many truly great Hollywood duos… Ginger and Fred, Brad and Ange, Vincent Vega and Mia, Arnie and his biceps, Dory and Nemo’s dad, to name just a few. But above all, there is one couple who have been there since the very beginning of cinema. Dinner and A Movie. These two are a perfect match, and fit together so naturally. No wonder their relationship has endured the test of time. A Movie has never once been tempted by Lunch as a new partner, because let’s face it, Lunch and A Movie sounds dumb. Dinner and A Movie has arrived in Daylesford. Dine at Daylesford House (105 Vincent St), Friday and Saturday nights for $35pp. This includes, dinner from the movie night menu, a glass of wine and a movie ticket for the Rex Cinema. (47-53 Vincent St). For more info and bookings call 5348 3557. To see what’s on at The Rex go to therex.org.au.

There’s no such thing as iVinyl

VINYL. Nothing like it. And no, we’re not talking about cheap flooring, nor are we discussing dubious pants. Of course we are talking about the black discs of awesomeness. Vinyl albums have personality and life, unlike, say, an invisible download, pfft. And they usually have pretty pictures and lyrics on the inner sleeve. *Sigh* so much to love. DJ Dusty Stylus agrees with this sentiment. And he can often be found rummaging through boxes of old records in second hand shops looking for old tracks and 12” treasures. Mr. Stylus has been DJing since the early 2000s, and serves up retro goodness and a highly danceable mix of jukebox rhythm and blues, jazz noir, mod beat, boogaloo and a bit of swing and funk to boot. If you’re feeling like some vintage tunes Saturday, Sept 28, head to the Savoia Hotel (69 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) because he’ll be hitting the decks from 9pm. Free entry. More info call the pub on 5348 2314. 34

Space and time and a little jazz

AHH SUNDAY afternoons. That magical time of the week where Monday morning is still soooo far away. Here at lost we are very keen on stretching the weekend out as long as scientifically possible. And sure, we’re no experts at physics, but bending the space/time continuum is totally our thing. In fact, we have mastered a formula to lengthen Sundays. And we’re going to let you in on the secret. (You’re welcome.) The Cosmopolitan Hotel (corner of High Street and Cosmo Road, Trentham) hosts live music every Sunday afternoon. Sunday, September 29, Daylesford’s own Jennie Brown Duo will be serving up some wonderful jazz tunes. Jazz + a lazy Sunday afternoon + friends + glass of red + open fire inside + sunshine in the gardens outside + exhale. = Time stands still. We told you so. For more info on who is playing each Sunday go to thecosmopolitanhotel.com.au or call (03) 5424 1516

Kyneton’s

got talent

IN JUST a coupla years the Kyneton Music Festival has earned itself a bit of a rep as being completely awesome. The calibre of artists on the bill last year was tip top, and as the Festival’s reputation gains even more cred, the 2014 fest promises to be possibly even more superduper. Until Monday, September 30, Kyneton Music Festival is taking applications from bands and musical artists who might like to perform at next year’s fest (to be held Friday, February 28 – Sunday, March 2). To find out more about the festival head to their website (kynetonmusicfestival.com.au), fill in an application, and you might be on the bill with some of the brightest and best musos in the land. The Kyneton Music Festival hosts regular bands and events throughout the year, check their Facebook page for all that stuff (search Kyneton Music Festival) or email info@kynetonmusicfestival.com.au. 36
