It’s The Race

that stops a town

WITH the race that stops a nation run and won, you’ll need another race date to wear that expensive fascinator you bought. (Honestly, why are a few twisty feathers so expensive?) The Kyneton Cup is just the event. The Kyneton Cup is the race that stops a town. Held the day after Melbourne Cup Day each year (this year Wednesday, November 2,) Kyneton Cup is a hugely popular day of racing - one of the big ones on the Spring Racing Carnival calendar. Frock up for fashions on the field, take in a little live music, and have a brilliant day out at Kyneton Racecourse (Campaspe Place). Gather your friends, choose a spot under the magnificent 100 year old trees and make a day of it! Gates open at 11am. There’s a shuttle bus from Kyneton Train Station. GA entry to the Kyneton Cup is $25, conc. $15. Families welcome, kids under 16 free. More info: country. racing.com/kyneton

The Season of Silly

lost the guide to where to find it

begins with beautiful music

2

NOW that the silly season is creeping into our collective consciousness, our minds turn to catch-ups with friends, drinks, fun in the evening sun, and live music. Friday, November 4, Horvat’s Supper Club is happy to help you settle into the fast approaching silly season with The Yearlings playing from 7pm. Robyn and Chris met back in 2000, and ever since have created beautiful, honest, raw music, with a nod to American Alt Country whilst twisting this genre with a distinctly Australian feel. The Yearlings have made appearances at festivals both locally and internationally, and they’re heading to Daylesford to share an evening of heartfelt music. Ease into the first weekend of November and be inspired by their beautiful tunes. Horvat’s is at 3/22 Howe Street Daylesford. Entry is free. For more info about what’s on this month at Horvat’s, like Horvat’s Supper Club on Facebook. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Springadingding!

Stop! Garden Time!

WELL, it has taken a while, but it seems spring might actually be here now! Gardeners throughout the region are rejoicing to see the sun again and are throwing open the gates to all - to show off what they’ve been working on through the cold, wet weather. The township of Creswick is home to many amazing gardens and on Saturday, November 5, and Sunday, November 6, they’re hosting their annual Garden Lovers Weekend. Grab a map and buy tickets for the gardens you wish to visit at the Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19 Victoria St.). There’s a HUGE list of beautiful gardens to visit, including commercial and private gardens. Entry to the commercial gardens is free, private gardens $6 each, (or six gardens $30, eight gardens $40). Call in at the neighbourhood centre for everything you need to know or go to Creswick.net for ticket links and garden details.

Spring Inspo

for the not so green-thumbed

THE tiny town of Newlyn just 15 minutes from Daylesford has a hidden secret. A superb garden tucked away from view. On the commute to Ballarat we have all probably driven past it without so much as a sideways glance, yet this garden (the former grounds of the old Newlyn branch of the National Bank – uh, yes… once upon a time Newlyn had a National Bank!!) is one of our true local treasures. Bank House (675 Dean-Newlyn Rd.) will open the gates of its magnificent garden Saturday, November 5, and Sunday, November 6. This is a special fundraiser for the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens. The garden is a mix of formal structure with rare and exciting plantings, hedges and surprises and has featured in Country Style magazine. Entry is $10 (kids free). There will also be wine, a BBQ, coffee and cake, plants and books for sale. Enjoy a perfect spring day in a magical country garden. More info at wombathill.org.au LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Creating The Kitchen Garden

lost the guide to where to find it

of your wildest dreams

6

WE all dream about it… a backyard full of luscious fresh fruit and vegetables – your very own kitchen garden that produces an incredible bounty of produce… one that you can gaze lovingly at from your kitchen window, and stroll amongst in the afternoon sunshine, (humming whilst you do so, with blue wrens and finches twittering around you too…) planning your nightly menu depending on what’s ready to pick. The vegie patch fantasy is a big one in the lives of so many of us. But the vegie patch reality – complete with slugs and weeds and weird looking carrots is more common for most of us. *sigh* The Diggers Club at The Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) is hosting a very special ‘Create a Kitchen Garden’ Masterclass: Saturday, November 5, from 11am. Head gardener Julian Blackhirst will be hosting this ‘Garden Fork to Kitchen Fork’ workshop as part of their Cultivate, Cook and Consume weekend. This fantastic extended workshop will teach you everything you need to know about creating a highly productive kitchen garden. Julian will discuss composting, companion planting and crop rotation. They’ll take you on a tour of St Erth’s own (totally amazing) kitchen garden, and once you’ve worked up an appetite you’ll enjoy lunch in the café created with the freshest seasonal produce (for a little more incentive to grow your own at home) with a glass of wine. Traditionally, we have to wait until after Melbourne Cup to plant our tomatoes. So while you’re out at Diggers, pick up some heritage tomato seedlings and pray for some sunshine to help them grow. The cost for the Kitchen Garden Masterclass and lunch is $60, ($56 for Diggers Club members). The Cultivate, Cook and Consume events at St Erth will be happening right across that weekend. Take a free garden tour, there’ll be live music in the garden, local producers’ stalls and lots of inspo for your garden. More info and masterclass bookings go to diggers.com.au LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Twitch, Flush, Fly and Tick

lost the guide to where to find it

it’s Twitchathon time birdnerds!

8

HOT on the heels of the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, Birdlife Australia is hosting the National Twitchathon. This ain’t a comfy 20 minute walk-in-the-park like the Bird Count, oh no. The Twitchathon is a super competitive no-holdsbarred, no-beg-your-pardons bird spotting race for the hard-core birder, (or ‘Twitcher’ if you will). The idea is to spot AS MANY birds as you can in a 24-hour period. This year the competition has gone national and on the weekend of Saturday, November 5, and Sunday, November 6, it’s Victoria’s turn to go nuts in the birding race that stops a nation (a-hem) all in the name of conservation. Gather your birding buddies and hit the road to tick off as many species as possible in 24 hours! Winning teams regularly tick off about a quarter of all of Australia’s bird species… (wow!) It’s serious stuff. This year there is a 12-hour ‘Champagne’ race option, allowing teams who like their sleep the chance to spot as many birds as possible in a mere 12 hours… You can even take a lunch break if you so desire! (Soft!) There’s another Birdathon option for teams to tackle in three one-hour blocks. Find a fab birding spot and tick as many as poss. off your list. (This one is great for kids, and partners who are reeeeally not that into birds but want to show some sort of support to their obsessive bird-nerd partner.) Each year, money is raised for different bird conservation initiatives in each state, so even if you can’t get out there to take part, you can always chip in a 20 to help our feathered friends. If you’re keen to be involved you have to register with Birdlife Australia – they’ll send you a registration pack with all the details and handy hints and twitchy tips. (Here’s a local tip from us… You’ll always pick up a few species of robin at Trentham Falls.) Polish up those high-powered binoculars and register now! For more information, to donate, or to register… (you know you want to…) go to birdlife.org.au. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Gumtree in the Gum Trees

lost the guide to where to find it

20+ garage sales in the bush

10

BEFORE eBay, before Gumtree, before the Facebook Buy/ Swap/Sell pages there was a little thing called the Garage Sale. A Garage Sale is traditionally when you drag everything you no longer want into your driveway, slap a price on it, pop some balloons on the letterbox, and people come from far and wide with wallets loaded with cash and take your old stuff away. (Makes you wonder why anyone ever bothers with eBay, the bidding, the postage, the commission… meh… bring back the good ol’ Garage Sale we say!) The tiny community of Wheatsheaf (about 10 minutes up the road between Daylesford and Glenlyon) is hosting a massive community Garage Sale Weekend: Saturday, November 5, and Sunday, November 6. More than twenty households have emptied their houses of all manner of treasures and stuff, and are selling it all in a huge garage sale weekend extravaganza! There will be mountains of garage sale goodies available including stuff like: furniture, books, records, a 24v fridge, clothes, building materials, tools, bric-a-brac, kids’ toys and loads more. Maps of the garage sale locations will be distributed from the two entry points into Wheatsheaf on Saturday the 5th from 8am. Yes… 8am. The early bird gets the good stuff at a garage sale! And not just the second hand bits and bobs… The sellers will be putting on cakes, sandwiches, scones, coffee and refreshments, (you don’t get that on eBay!) SO GOOD! The Wheatsheaf Community Garage Sale day will run Saturday AND Sunday: 8am – 2pm. Take cash, take your trailer and just follow the signs and balloons! You’re bound to come away with a treasure or two, or five. Wheatsheaf is in the bush, 8km from Daylesford. Take the Daylesford-Malmsbury Road towards Glenlyon, and turn right at the signs.

JUST in case you’ve been living under a rock, fermentation is totally a thing again. Your hippie aunt who was massively into it in the 70s will be rolling out the “I told you sos” right about now. Fermenting your own kombucha, kefir, and other fancy ferments is BIG, and this month Sharon Flynn from The Fermentary will be showing you all the delicious Fermie tips and tricks at Lake House cooking school Sunday, November 6. Learn all about SCOBYs (that’s totally an acronym: Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast… true!) (um, we learnt that today) and discover the different cultures used to make kombucha, water and milk kefirs, ginger beer, country wines, sake and more! Sharon will lead a three hour demo (10am-1pm), you’ll take home a copy of her new book, and a jar and culture to get started at home! Parmageddon SOMETIMES in your life all you need is a Parma. A golden crumbed chicken breast schnitzel, some sort of luscious saucy Napoli, and a golden melted cheese scenario on top, (with or without ham… oh yes, The Classic…) plus chips and a fresh salad. Universally adored, a Parma rarely disappoints. The Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) is well known as Parma Nirvana in these parts. The Old Hep serves up eight (yep, count ‘em!) EIGHT types of Parma and they’re all well regarded by the Parma Police. The Old Hep’s Parmas are lovingly created for the discerning Parma connoisseur. Budburst

lost the guide to where to find it

the best thing about a cool climate

18

YOU know what happens in November? The baby wine grows. Eeeep!!! Baby wine!! We live in a cool climate wine region, (some would say this year it has been a cold climate…) and in November, the baby grapes finally decide to pop out of the vine heralding the birth of a new vintage… We call it Budburst. And boy do we celebrate it! The annual Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Budburst Festival is a weekend of the finest wines and wonderful local produce. Budburst is something of a roving feast and festival, set among the vineyards dotted throughout the Macedon Ranges Wine Region. This year Budburst will be held Saturday, November 12, and Sunday, November 13. Throughout the region there’ll be live entertainment, special lunch and dinner events, and of course ample opportunity to sniff, sample, quaff and purchase the finest wines this special wine region has to offer. Slow down for a weekend of wine tales tall and true, meet the winemakers and hear their stories, it really personalises the experience to meet the maker and hear the story of the vintage in the bottle. Taste your way around the region, (yes it’s totally worth choosing a designated driver before you leave home!), stay for lunches and cheese platters and stroll the vines (but shhh, please don’t wake the baby grapes). There’s a special Budburst dinner to be held at Mr. Carsisi in Kyneton, and a wine matched degustation dinner at Source Dining, Kyneton. Many of the wineries will be hosting lunches – there’s a lot of spring lamb on the menus… get amongst it with a Pinot. Delish! Buy a Winery Pass for $20 (which includes a spesh Plumm tasting glass that you can take with you to each winery) and book a seat on the bus to drive you between the wineries. (Good idea!) There are 20 venues and 32 wineries on the map to visit, including more than 100 wines to sample (what did we say about the bus?? Hmmm… better book it soon!) MALMSBURY is just up the road from here and makes for an excellent and easy road trip on a lazy Sunday arvo. Head to the Botanic Gardens and Town Hall and browse the stalls for something amazing to eat and drink (or many things to eat and drink) and pull up a patch of grass under a shady tree and enjoy some live tunes on a (hopefully) sunny day. Sounds pretty much perfect. The Fayre always delivers a delicious and fun day of live entertainment for foodies, kids, locals and visitors. It’s also time to think about what you’re going to whip up for this year’s Christmas spread! Piper Street Food Co. (at 89 Piper Street, Kyneton) has the Christmas deliciousness sorted with a super special Christmas class to be held Saturday, November 26. This class will cover all aspects of hand-raised pies – including pastry, terrines, moulds, and other extra-delicious and completely beautiful dishes – to star on the table at your family Christmas feast. The four-hour class runs 10am – 2pm. Cost is $250. For more information and bookings go to piperstfoodco.com or call 5422 3553.
