A HISTORIC GUEST RANCH IN JACKSON HOLE

Located in Moose, Wyoming, Lost Creek Ranch is nestled between the Teton and Gros Ventre mountain ranges in the valley known as Jackson Hole. For 11,000 years the Teton wilderness was utilized by indigenous tribes for summer hunting and Teton Pass was used as a thru-way in the Rocky Mountains for travel and trade. Rising sharply from the valley floor the Tetons were known to the Shoshone people as ‘Teewinot” meaning ‘ many pinnacles.’

Although John Colter is often credited as being the first white man to set eyes on the Tetons, it wasn’t until fur trappers John Hoback, Jacob Reznor and Edward Robinson led the Overland Astorian Expedition through the valley and over Teton Pass that this land was considered ‘discovered.’

By the 1800’s the region was used as open grazing land and in 1915 the land on which Lost Creek sits was patented to a farmer named Raymond Kent under the Homestead Act. The land passed through several hands before it was acquired by Albert Schwabacher in 1926; it has been a working guest ranch ever since, initially welcoming small groups via the Union Pacific railroad under Block S Ranch.

After visiting the area in 1926 John D. Rockefeller began his controversial acquisition of private lands in Teton county. Albert Schwabacher was one of the few ranchers who refused to sell. As a result this privately owned ranch is now surrounded by Grand Teton National Park (310,000 acres) and Bridger-Teton National Forest (3.4 million acres).

In 1968, Gerald Halpin acquired the ranch and operations continued as a guest ranch. Mr. Halpin was a steward of the land and became a founding member of the Grand Teton National Park Foundation in 1997, later donating a portion of the ranch to GTNP. In 2024, the historic ranch changed hands and the Halpin Trust sold Lost Creek to longtime guests, the Gottwald family also from VA. The family looks forward to continuing this nearly 100-year-old tradition at Lost Creek, introducing others to the West, and giving more guests the same experience that helped shape generations of their own family.

Due to snowfall and its rural location, Lost Creek only operates up to 15 weeks per year, we are delighted to share this special time in the Wyoming wilderness with our guests.

LODGE & SPA

The comfortably appointed Lodge is a gathering space for meals and activities. Outfitted with regional taxidermy and western art, you can end your day by grabbing a drink from the saloon and settling in to watch the sun set behind the Tetons from the Lodge or deck.

Enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the comfort of the dining hall. Several times per week open fire meals are also offered from our chuckwagon.

A short walk from the Lodge, the serene Spa, Hot Tub and Pool offer another peaceful vantage point of the Teton range. Start your day with a fresh espresso or matcha, followed by a fitness class or a massage.

STRAIGHT FROM THE SADDLE

“We recently returned from a family trip at Lost Creek Ranch and truly do not have enough wonderful things to say about it! The location was stunning and conveniently approx. 30 minutes from the airport and downtown Jackson Hole. The newly updated cabins we beautiful and comfortable. The meals were delicious and Charlie, Harrison, Sasha and the other dining staff/chefs provided wonderful, personalized service. We had a few birthdays during the trip and the pastry chef made the most stunning delicious birthday cakes for our group. My kids adored kids camp and the fun, caring, intentional and protective staff- Evany and Sam. All activities ran smoothly and were a blast including hikes, rides, river floats, the rodeo, plein air painting, skeet shooting, archery, etc. The evening activities were fun and across the board and the staff was amazing. Jasmin, the General Manager, was a huge help in all planning for the trip (where 13 of us traveled).

Cannot recommend Lost Creek Ranch enough!

Normally one would wait until after they have departed to write a review, however, quality & consistency compels me to weigh in early. I spent my career working for a company considered “Best in the Business” for customer satisfaction, so I brought a very high expectation to the ranch. From the initial phone calls & emails to the actual arrival at the ranch the attention to detail & satisfaction was a common theme. Now that we ’ ve been here a little over half way, the staff’s esprit de corps & the genuine drive to make sure that everyone, 7 to 71 in our case, is having fun & is getting to fulfill their own expectations of our time here. I can see why many families come back year after year. In the vein of the company for which I spent my career, BRAVO ZULU! (If you see a better understanding, look it up.)

STRAIGHT FROM THE SADDLE

The ranch is the jewel in the area. The setting is stunning. Service and amenities are definitely upper tier for a dude ranch. Their staff members are all rockstars in their field who are eager to give you the time of your life while making it all seem effortless. They love their job which makes it easy for the guests to relax into indulging the comfortable lodging, delicious food (catered to dietary preferences) and fun activities. My family is vegan and the kitchen prepared creative dishes for us at every meal time. We liked the variety of trail rides customized to each family members riding ability, and enjoyed the private river float with truly exceptional guides.

We do recommend a car to explore hikes or sights around the area and venture into Yellowstone.

And yes, the weather can be somewhat unpredictable - we got rained, hailed and snowed on in July... - and mosquitoes are plentiful. Just remember you are in the natural habitat of all sorts of wildlife.
