LO’s Obscure Trivia Facts from 2022
There are many ways that people become connected to camp, whether it be as campers, retreat guests, through their church, as staff, or somehow stumbling in out of the blue. Greg and Sue Olsen began their relationship with Outlaw Ranch over four decades ago when a group of families from their church came as family campers. In 1979, they made their first trip with their two daughters, ages three and six. In 1983, their son was five months old when they attended that summer. For fourteen years, they continued with their children, saying, “Family camp for us is a time to pause and reflect upon the Creator’s gift of the Black Hills. Outlaw Ranch is a place of peace. It is also a place to build community with new friends, as well as with the Staff and Volunteers. We have met many counselors each summer who have joined this community for a summer of service. Friendships have been formed with the many adult study leaders we have met and the wonderful musicians and artists that join family camp weeks.”
In recent years, they’ve transitioned to attending family camp with grandchildren and volunteering. As volunteers, they’ve contributed their time and talents to recent projects, including the new pavilion, camp store building, and removing the old corral. Whatever the task may be, hauling hay, cleaning cabins, clearing trees, or driving for Road Scholar programs, they’ve jumped in. Greg says, “Volunteering is our opportunity to give back to a ministry that has enriched our lives…. We have been blessed in many ways by making that first trip to family camp in 1979.”
Volunteering is a hands-on way to dive deeper into your relationship with a camp. Some volunteers are at camp daily, and some answer the call when help for bigger projects is needed. It can be on or off-site, for example, building end tables in your wood shop or sewing new curtains for cabins in the comfort of your home. If you’d like to get connected to camp through volunteering, we encourage you to reach out to their staff to see how your time and talents might be put to use in support of the Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota camps!

WELCOME, MARTI KNUDSEN!
We welcomed Marti Knudsen as the Camp Director of NeSoDak in November. Marti brings many years of experience in Outdoor Ministries at Upper Missouri Ministries in North Dakota. She has three daughters and a husband; Pastor Josh Knudsen serves at Grace Lutheran in Sisseton.
A short intro from Marti, “This will be a return to outdoor ministry for me, having previously worked for many years at Upper Missouri Ministries near Williston, ND, before taking a break while my husband (Josh) attended seminary and we grew our family. I have three daughters (Hali, 8; Brynja, 6; and Jensi, 4), two dogs, and a cat.
My husband (pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton, SD) and I met through outdoor ministry, and he is also excited for this next chapter in our life together. I look forward to meeting people and hearing stories about your time at camp! It will be beautiful to see how God moves as we journey forward at NeSoDak!”
THANK YOU, KLAIRE DECKER!
Outlaw Ranch has been blessed with exceptional Program Directors over the past decade. Even though we’ve only had her for a short time, Klaire has done incredible work for our guests and staff.
She and her husband Noah are beginning a new adventure with creating the next generation of Outlaw Ranch campers and staff! While we are excited for their new addition, she will be missed when she departs in early April. Thank you, Klaire (and Noah)!
NEW YEAR, NEW GIVING Become a Monthly Donor
It’s the beginning of a new year and a great time to become a monthly donor to Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota. You have the convenience of making one call, saving yourself time, and having the flexibility to adjust the donation amount over time within a secure payment processor. Your gift of $30 per month can help pay for 1 EpiPen at NeSoDak, for bee and wasp stings. Your gift of $ 50 per month can pay for healthcare for one of the Klein Ranch horses. Your gift of $10 per month supplies the kitchen at Outlaw with milk for three weeks.
By giving monthly, you support the work and ministry of LO and are a part of the LO community, who helps sustain and provide reliable funding for the organization to plan and grow. Call the LO office at 1-800-888-1464 to talk with Linda, who will get all the essential information directly from you. You can choose when you want your monthly gift to be received by Lutherans Outdoors. And feel great knowing your gifts help throughout the year. Your monthly gift provides a “steady” income for LO.
It’s a WIN-WIN!

THE DIRECTOR’S PERSPECTIVE
Paul Hanson, Executive Director
Over the course of 2023, you will hear Lutherans Outdoors use the word Wonder.
It is the theme of our summer camping program where guests and campers will experience the wonder of God’s love, the wonder of God’s creation, and the wonder of God’s grace.
It will be the theme of our financial development endeavors this year too. The ability of thousands, who financially support the ministry, creates awe and wonder for the beautiful sites, the beautiful people, and the Christ-centered, life-giving programs of Lutherans Outdoors.
Wonder will also play an essential role as Lutherans Outdoors continues throughout this year to REIMAGINE the many facets of the ministry. We have started the year with in-depth reviews in the areas of Fund Development, Finances, and Budgets, as well as the Marketing currently used. I will continually update you on the progress of this REIMAGINING in various social media and print publications.
Our theme verse is from Luke 5:26…
And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
Our mighty God has provided each day for us to see extraordinary things.
Our mighty God has provided amazing places for us to experience extraordinary things.
Our mighty God has provided unique individuals in our lives to experience extraordinary things together.
It is a privilege to be in WONDER of the incredible outcomes provided by the Lutherans Outdoors ministry!
Join us this year as we look down, look up, look around, look in, and look out to examine the precious gifts of community and creation and be in a state of WONDER of our God!
Be Good,
Paul J. Hanson Executive Director BOARD OF DIRECTORS

“Ladies of the Lake” Book Club
The Ladies of the Lake book club was inspired by a discussion while making lefse at NeSoDak. In November of 2020, Becky Heimerl, Roxy Saufley, Cindy Nelson, and Sharon Oliver were sharing their considerable talents in preparing Scandinavian treat trays when a conversation about what to do through the upcoming winter months resulted in a book club. Since then, the group has met at NeSoDak every other week to discuss a wide variety of books.
The group’s goal for 2023 is to read more classic and banned books beginning in January with Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Lutherans Outdoors has been blessed by the dedication of the book club ladies volunteer work. These ladies regularly assist with everything from fundraiser events to culinary projects, painting, cleaning and organizing areas around NeSoDak.
S’more Support for Camp
This past summer, Diane Brandsrud (LO Board member and long time camp supporter) had a wonderful idea to share her love and support for Outlaw Ranch. Diane asked Shannon (Facility Manager) & Jean (Food Service Manager) about their wish lists. They each gave 5 things that would enhance their work at Outlaw Ranch!
After bringing the lists back to her home congregation, American Lutheran Church in Huron, she talked with Kim Rieger (LO Board member and Family Camper). Out of this conversation blossomed the desire to hold a fundraiser for these wish list items. Together they had two Thrivent grants, one for food and one for a silent auction. These leaders saw a need and met a need, through imagination and creative planning.
The members of American Lutheran enjoyed a taste of camp on a Sunday morning, with a trail ride breakfast (sans trail ride) and s’mores for dessert, of course! While people were enjoying breakfast, a rather competive crew bid one another up on the silent auction items that were available for the day. The church’s endowment provided a $1,000 match, bringing the total funds raised to nearly $3,000.What a fun and creative way to support the ministry that they love!
Thank you, American Lutheran Church, Huron!
THRIVENT OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE GENEROUSLY THRIVENT ACTION TEAMS
Make a difference through a Thrivent Action team. Thrivent provides a chance for you to gather a team of friends, family or neighbors to put on a fundraiser, educational event or service activity. Once you apply and are approved, Thrivent will provide $250 in seed money. Then you and your team can get creative in your plans to support camp! It’s easy to do and the camps appreciate the support.
THRIVENT CHOICE DOLLARS
You can still direct your 2022 Thrivent Choice Dollars to Lutherans Outdoors (or directly to Outlaw Ranch, Klein Ranch, or NeSoDak) before March 31, 2023.
Directing your Thrivent Choice dollars is an easy process.
Online:
Simply go to Thrivent.com/thriventchoice and follow the instructions. By phone:
Call 800-847-4836 and say “Thrivent Choice” after the prompt. In the past four years alone LO has received over $100,000 in Thrivent Choice dollars from folks like you. Thrivent Choice dollars benefit new programs, new facilities, and seasonal staff for each of your camps. We are incredibly grateful for you choosing LO!

Many Hands Make Lighter Loads
“Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not regretfully or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:7-8
The AMAZING volunteers at Klein Ranch ~ by Teri Gayer, Klein Ranch Director
Every year I am continually in awe and inspired by the volunteers of Lutherans Outdoors in SD. This year is no different. I have been blessed to get to know some AMAZING adults, who not only have come to Klein as a youth directors, drivers, advisors and some are even campers who have grown up and are now adults bringing their kids to camp…but they also come to camp to VOLUNTEER!
This spring an incredible group from First Lutheran in Marshall, Minnesota, wanted to give more to Klein Ranch. They wanted to help get the camp ready for summer. Held back a day by a powerful storm, the pickups were packed and they were ready to go, only a massive storm rolled through town and they needed to stay home and clean up the mess…at least until they knew the power would come back on!
They headed west to SD. After supper in Mobridge, they come upon an accident, and offered assistance and comfort until EMS arrived. One little girl wasn’t eager for our volunteers to leave, but with some goodbye hugs, our volunteers were back on the road.
FINALLY, the lights of Klein were seen, and our volunteers were now “home” for the weekend! It was a “Many hands make lighter loads” type of weekend. All the horses were vaccinated, dewormed and their teeth were floated; fence line was ripped out, trees were cut down or trimmed and hauled away, chairs were assembled, signs painted, buildings unpacked, dishes washed, kitchen cleaned, laundry (washed AND dried), quilts & fire extinguishers were distributed, batteries charged, lawn mowers started, recycling loaded and even an oat grinder was assembled…
WHEW what a day! The crew stayed through part of Sunday before they needed to head home to finish the cleanup at their own places where the storm had left.
This group: Tonya, Erin, Dr. Scott, Cliff, Justin, Katie, Alexis & Deb, in one weekend had an incredible impact on the life of camp! Thank you, First Lutheran in Marshall & THANK YOU to all our volunteers! When we gather in Christ’s name, we change the world for our neighbors. Thank you for abundantly blessing the camps, the staff, the campers, and all who come to camp!
