“Working at camp has lasting career and personal impact. Camp staff outcomes align remarkably well with the top skills employers identify as most important for the 21st-century workforce, including teamwork, communication skills, leadership, and problem-solving.”
-Sacred Playgrounds / #campbuilds
BY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PAUL HANSONLutherans Outdoors is the middle of one of the most crucial yearly endeavors it faces recruiting summer staff to work at the three camp sites
Counselors, lifeguards, food service, maintenance, leadership staff, plus many more positions The high quality of a camp program depends on hiring wonderful people for all of these positions But it is not an easy task in today’s world
I followed my girlfriend to camp when I was 20 years old She thought it would be a great idea to work together during the summer in this place that had been so important to her I never went to camp in my youth so I had no idea what I was getting into Little did I know it would change my life
My girlfriend was diagnosed with vocal cord nodules three weeks into the summer and needed to go home and not talk for a month, as her singing voice was very important in her life goals Now what do I do?
What I did was lean into this counselor job And I thrived at it! This gig at camp ended up to be, what I feel, the place where I blossomed And looking back at those three years as a counselor, not only did my faith grow, but I learned how to be a leader, how to speak in front of a group, how to organize, how to work with others as a team, how to be confident, and so much more
And it led me to have my career in Outdoor Ministry, to make sure others blossom also.
Thirty years ago there were more applicants than positions available making the recruitment and hiring process relatively easy Today, Camp Directors lose sleep with the worry of not finding enough quality staff for the number of campers
Sacred Playgrounds has done some incredible research as to working at camp It has proven that the camp experience does indeed provide tools for one’s future and provides memories and friendships of a lifetime
Though they would love to work at camp, there are a variety of realities that make it tough for college-age students to commit, whether it be continued expenses or needing an internship
Why should they work at camp? Because they can receive the same benefits and life lessons I received that will stay with them forever Resume building skills and experiences that employers are looking for A strengthened faith Lifelong friendships. The list is long.
Lutherans Outdoors needs your help in recruiting these incredible women and men! Please share the importance of a position like this with the women and men you know of Share with them how it can be an incredible experience for them not only now but in the years ahead Share with them how it can lead to future success in their career. Share with them that the faith-building and life- changing that will happen to them will be felt ALL of their life Share with them the importance they can be in a camper’s life
Send them to our website at losd org/employment for application information
FYI I did marry that girlfriend and we know working at camp has made our marriage strong One more benefit!
Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota welcomes all to explore and experience Christ’s love in community and creation. ~ Mission Statement

During the year 2024, you will be asked by me, several times, to prayerfully consider a monetary gift to Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota My question that runs parallel to asking for a gift is: Why Not?
Lutherans Outdoors is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization It survives by faithful people responding to the ask for a donation You can read hundreds and hundreds of names in the latter part of this newsletter who did indeed donate Is your name included? If it isn’t, Why Not?
Did you know that each year Lutherans Outdoors needs to raise $1 2M in donations?
These donations are broken down as follows:
Over $800,000 in individual donations providing nearly
$300,000 in camp scholarships for each and every camper who comes to camp. Yes, that is right, every camper receives a scholarship in some form even every Family Camper who attends The registration fee for all programs is already discounted over 20% of the actual cost of camp
Nearly $100,000 from congregation benevolence and various congregation groups (i e WELCA)

Providing a ministry that provides programming for nearly 5,000 guests each year at the three sites LO operates has large expenses. Energy, food, staffing, insurance, building maintenance costs, and much more, all continue to increase each year thus the need for donations to supplement the program fees
Lutherans Outdoors needs your faithfulness, and the faithfulness of your fellow congregation members, to help financially To assure the continuity of wonderful programs that explore faith, welcome all, build leaders and care for all creation To assure that this outdoor ministry continues In the Hills, On the Prairie, and At the Water
So I ask you again Why Not? You can respond using the envelope that is included in this newsletter Thank you

The LO Board of Directors continues this incredible journey of Re-imagining Lutherans Outdoors What has happened so far during the past 15 months?
50+ conversations with past and present LO champions to hear impressions of Lutherans Outdoors as to all aspects of the ministry
Four Core Values were formed that creates our focus of all that LO does plus one site specific value at each camp
Deep dives into eight areas of the ministry were conducted: Philosophy of LO, Finance and Budget, Financial Development, Marketing, Governance, Facility and Equipment, Staffing, and Program
From these deep dives, nearly 100 recommendations were presented to, and accepted by, the Board of Directors Several of these recommendations have already been implemented and many more are in process These recommendations will all be completed by the end of 2024
The next step is the creation of a new Strategic Process for Lutherans Outdoors This process, which will be instrumental in moving LO towards the next 25 years of ministry, will then be presented at the LO Annual Meeting held in June in conjunction with the SD Synod Assembly
This Re-imagining has energized the Board of Directors that is working incredibly hard to provide you, and the rest of the members of the LO constituency, an opportunity to further your faith-life with a God who has incredible love for you.
If you would like any further information concerning Re-imagining LO, please call Paul at the LO Administrative office
Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota is excited to welcome Jake Jacott as the Program Director at NeSoDak Join us in welcoming him to the LO family!
Here’s a little info from Jake:
“Hello, everyone My name is Jake Jacott, and I am very excited to join Lutherans Outdoors as the Program Director at NeSoDak!
A little bit about me: I grew up in Minnesota, but after that, I went to college in Chicago and then spent a full year serving at Covenant Point Bible Camp in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!
I enjoy drinking coffee in the morning, running, reading, and listening to and playing music in my spare time!
I believe camp is a great place to build relationships with others and spend time in God’s creation, and both are ways where we can experience God’s love and presence in our lives! So I am excited to serve in a place where that experience can be cultivated and shared by everyone who spends time here.”
You can connect with Jake and send a word of welcome at jake@losd org
NeSoDak Bible Camp has been honored to host Camp POSTCARD the past two summers and will host the camp again this June
Camp POSTCARD (Peace Officers Striving to Create and Reinforce Dreams) is a free, weeklong summer camp that brings together law enforcement officials and middle school students from the Sioux Falls area This unique and powerful experience gives youth and law enforcement the opportunity to connect in an environment that pushes them out of their comfort zone Students and law enforcement officials will be encouraged to learn from one another and see each other from different perspectives.
School Resource Officers play a critical role in Camp POSTCARD They serve as the sole referral source, nominating and selecting students to attend During camp, School Resource Officers and other law enforcement officials fill the role of camp counselors as they lead youth through activities to help develop self-esteem, leadership, and decision-making skills, while building trusting and respectful relationships
Camp POSTCARD serves youth facing challenging circumstances who could benefit from building positive, trusting relationships with adults The camp is designed to improve youth’s relationships with law enforcement and enhance law enforcement officials’ connections with youth
Camp POSTCARD is made possible with the generous support of Volunteers of America donors and camp sponsors Organizers put together pre- and post-camp activities for the kids and collect data based on the experiences of the kids and officers Volunteers of America, Dakotas, the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office, and the Sioux Falls Police Department hope to continue Camp POSTCARD, citing Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken’s “One Sioux Falls” initiative
“She gained such a great relationship with all the officers and made some great friends. This (last) school year she was having some trouble with another student at school and she felt comfortable going to her school resource officer for help. I think Camp POSTCARD is such a great opportunity to connect kids with police to build a great relationship.”

With seven annual retreats, Passionate Quilters is Outlaw Ranch’s largest hosted ministry event Originating as a rental group, Passionate Quilters was eventually turned over to Outlaw to manage The events, where quilters can stay from 3-5 days, bring together a variety of abilities and interests With a rainbow of fabrics and designs, there are always new ideas sparked from other guests. Projects of all shapes and sizes, and in various states of completion, are in process at all hours of the day Some quilters come because they have deadlines and projects to complete, while others attend for the social aspects of the weekend. No matter what, there is camaraderie in the shared joy of quilting as profession, hobby, and art form
Are you a passionate quilter? Join us this spring Learn more at losd org/spring-passionate-quilters

The Lutherans Outdoors community recently lost two camp staff who had tremendous impact on the people, the programming, and the camp philosophy of both Outlaw Ranch and Atlantic Mountain Ranch Mary Stutz passed on Christmas Eve and Joyce Jindra passed on Christmas Day
Starting in 1997, Mary served Outlaw Ranch as Assistant Director, running Atlantic Mountain Ranch during the summer and working at Outlaw throughout the retreat season With a keen eye for detail, she would work tirelessly to ensure every program that she supervised, from Adventures to Road Scholar, was the best it could possibly be
Passionate about the outdoors both personally and professionally, and with more than four decades of camp experience, Mary would willingly share her knowledge She frequently served Lutheran Outdoor Ministry as an educator at the annual Leadership Training Event, helping to equip the next generation of camp leaders Generations of summer staff benefitted from her training and mentorship
There were few who could keep up with Mary She would work till midnight, get up and hike Black Elk Peak, and then be back at camp preparing for the day before most rolled out of bed Outlaw staff member Hayley Moe remembers, “She was so funny and so wise! She was this small little woman that could out-hike you and also survive on less sleep than you Our training hikes were 10 miles long and she would still be more chipper than the rest of us when it was time to eat supper.” It was Mary’s passion for the transformative power of the camp experience and the people it impacted that fueled her.
Serving as Food Service Director of Outlaw and Atlantic Mountain Ranches for over 20 years, Joyce saw food as ministry In “The Gift of Food”, which she coauthored with Mary Kettl, Joyce wrote, “I realized that my calling to food service was as much a ministry as a job In camping we are called to minister to the whole person God created us as a whole people – spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical To neglect any part seems to go against the very intent of God.”
Focusing on homemade meals crafted with love, Joyce took a holistic approach to camp’s food service, ensuring that all the parts and pieces, from kitchen setup to ingredients, were well thought out She ensured the kitchen was professional and that mealtimes were viewed as a gift, “holy times They are the breaking of bread in God’s presence.” Even two decades later, many of Outlaw’s current recipes trace back to Joyce, and her commitment to exceptional food service remains
Most recently, Joyce would blend her passion for camp and quilting by assisting with our Passionate Quilter retreats
The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) plays an important role in promoting philanthropy in our state through its impactful work in grantmaking, endowment building and management, and community development A big part of this mission is the support and facilitation of planned giving opportunities Did you know that SDCF collaborates closely with Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota (LOSD)?
One of the ways in which donors can make a lasting impact on LOSD is by partnering with SDCF to establish endowment funds These endowments serve as a permanent resource, generating a stream of income for LOSD Each year, 4 5% of the fund’s fair market value is distributed to LOSD, strengthening their capacity to deliver programs and services Some of the ways you can contribute are:
Designated Funds: With designated funds, the donor can provide support to LOSD, expressing your commitment to their mission in perpetuity
Agency Funds: LOSD has established an agency fund to ensure a steady stream of revenue to support their ongoing operations
Donor Advised Funds: These funds offer maximum flexibility to the donors by allowing them to recommend grants to nonprofit organizations such as Lutherans Outdoors
If you are a donor contemplating a meaningful and long-term gift to Lutherans Outdoors, we encourage you to reach out to either the South Dakota Community Foundation at 1-800-888-1842 or the dedicated staff at Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota Together, we can explore and implement the most effective means of supporting the organization that has helped to develop South Dakota’s youth for many years, while achieving your philanthropic goals
Thank you for coming to NeSoDak for our annual Chocolate Fest! It was a delight to host you and have you at camp Thank you for bringing your family and friends, thank you for making camp a part of your season, and thank you for all the ways you support us! We hope to have you join us at camp again soon! ~ Marti Knudsen, NeSoDak Director
