Fall 2023 Vol 36, Issue 2

News for the Friends of Lutherans Outdoors in SD THANK YOU, TERI GAYER! On July 21-23, 2023, Klein Ranch alumni and friends gathered to celebrate 50 years of ministry. Time was made for participants to reminisce, ride a horse, hike in the Mini-Badlands, worship at the Stone Church, and celebrate the good ministry that has happened during the past fifty years. 50 YEARS OF MINISTRY AT KLEIN RANCH! The opportunity was also made to say thank you to Teri Gayer. Teri is stepping away after over 30 years of leadership with Lutherans Outdoors at Klein Ranch and NeSoDak. Teri was willing to share some memories and nuggets of wisdom during her farewell party. We wish Teri the best in her future ways of leadership on the prairie. We will miss her. Excellent job good and faithful servant!

“There are so many blessings here (at Klein Ranch). You get into the muck and mud of camp yet you forget how astounding the blessings are.” ~Teri Gayer

“Many people refer to Klein Ranch as being in the middle of nowhere. I say it is in the middle of everywhere! We all have to travel to get here. We bring a little bit of us to Klein Ranch to leave here. We all take a little bit of Klein Ranch with us when we leave.” ~ Teri Gayer

But, did you know that Outlaw Ranch, Klein Ranch, and NeSoDak each have a Core Value specific to their site?

Families who attend the Family Camp program not only bond among themselves, but also become part of a larger family that forms each week. This sense of community helps create lasting relationships among participants and staff. Youth who participate in a week of camp have the opportunity to build strong connections with their peers, mentors, and camp staff. These bonds contribute to a sense of belonging and support that can last well beyond their time at camp. The dedication to community-building is not limited to the summer months. Whether it’s through religious or spiritual programs, community service, or other activities, participants are encouraged to form meaningful connections with others at Outlaw Ranch. The commitment to community is not just for campers; it extends to the Outlaw Ranch staff as well. The staff members themselves form a close-knit community, which sets a positive example for campers, participants, and volunteers. This strong sense of community among the staff likely contributes to the welcoming and supportive atmosphere of the camp. On the Prairie, at Klein Ranch, we promise to Empower Self-Confidence. Klein Ranch promises to empower self-confidence through interaction with horses. Working with horses can indeed be a transformative experience, especially for youth.

Taking care of horses involves a range of responsibilities, such as feeding, grooming, and learning to saddle the horses. This teaches youth about accountability and commitment, skills that can be applied in various aspects of life.

Klein Ranch

Nurturing community is a value that helps create a warm and inclusive environment. Connecting families, campers, and staff, and making it a place where people can grow, learn, and build lasting relationships.

Horses are highly sensitive animals that mirror human emotions. Through gentle and patient interaction with horses, youth can learn to build trust and establish a connection. This experience can translate into building trust with others in their lives.

In the Hills, at Outlaw Ranch, we promise to Nurture Community.

Understanding and effectively communicating with horses is essential. Youth learn to interpret non-verbal cues, which can improve their communication skills with peers, family members, and authority figures. Many individuals find horses intimidating at first. Through gradual exposure, interaction and guidance, youth can learn to overcome their fears. Youth learn more about their strengths, weaknesses, and personal preferences, leading to increased self-awareness and confidence. At NeSoDak, we promise to Connect at the Water. The promise of connecting at the water is a beautiful and meaningful one, emphasizing the transformative power of nature and faith.

NeSoDak’s location on a water-surrounded peninsula provides a unique opportunity for campers to be grounded in nature activities, such as nature hikes and plant identification, fostering a sense of connection to the environment as well as awe and wonder about the natural world. These activities often require skills that help campers engage more deeply with nature. Opportunities abound to educate campers about the importance of water conservation and environmental stewardship emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living things. The promise of connection also highlights the role of water as a sustainer of life. It serves as a powerful metaphor for their connection to God inviting campers to engage in prayer, study, and discussions exploring faith. The joy of water activities, such as swimming and boating, can be a source of pure happiness. These experiences contribute to the overall well-being of campers. Lutherans Outdoors continues to RE-IMAGINE! And we are doing this…

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT From Musical Instrument to Work of Art! by Crystal Swenson

My connection to NeSoDak goes back further than Lutherans Outdoors. My dad was on the NeSoDak Board of Directors in the early 1960’s. My first camping experience was during the summer of 1967. I went back in the summer of 1968. My counselor, Deb, was one of the main guitar players for the summer. That is when I knew I wanted to learn how to play guitar. My parents gave me my first guitar as a Christmas gift that year. When I was in college, I traded that guitar for a 12-string. I took it with me to NeSoDak for the summer of 1976 when I did my Recreation internship. It was during summer camp when I started playing more and improving my skills.

Crystal Swenson with her “Work of Art”.

I graduated from Northern State in 1977 and went back to NeSoDak. I developed a friendship with Rachel Jacobson, a counselor from Veblen. We stayed in touch over the years. Like many camp staff friendships, personal visits weren’t numerous, but they were always special. My 12-string guitar went with me to Outlaw in 1980 when I was the summer program director. And it went with me several times over the years as I attended Family Camp. Eventually, it developed bridge issues, and I no longer played it. I replaced it with a new 12-string Washburn and a couple of 6-string Taylors. As years went on, Rachel developed a passion for mosaic work. She won an award at the Minnesota State Fair for her work on a guitar. The first time I saw her award winner, I knew I would love to have her mosaic my guitar—the one I played the summer I worked with her. She encouraged me to come to one of her Mosaic Weekends in the Twin Cities and do the artwork myself. That never seemed to work out (probably because I wanted her to do it). Last summer, she agreed to take my guitar and turn it into a piece of art.

Rachel Jacobson Arntson staff alumni, and mosaic artist.

Rachel asked me for input, and I gave her ideas. I wanted to showcase the cross at Inspiration Point and the LO logo. I love to photograph flowers, and she incorporated my love. Each time she sent a photo of the work in progress, I would get tears in my eyes. Although the guitar can no longer be played, it still makes joyful noises. When I look at “Jacob” (yes, I name my guitars), I hear Rachel’s raucous laughter. I hear myself playing it at numerous campfires and worship services. I hear voices singing along to the chords as I strummed. Thank you, Rachel Jacobson Arntson, for sharing your talent!

WELCOME SKYLAR! Outlaw Ranch welcomed Program Director, Skylar Schwab in May. From Skylar, “It is with great joy and excitement that I get to begin my newest adventure at Outlaw Ranch! I’ve been in the camp world for almost 15 years either as a camper, counselor, planning the programs, a volunteer, or bringing youth from my church to camps across the Midwest. So basically, the magic of camp is in my spirit through and through. Our two dogs have learned that their walks will be a bit more interesting in the Black Hills. I am thrilled to continue discovering how God will use my gifts at Outlaw!” Please join us in continuing to welcome Skylar to the Lutherans Outdoors family! 3

RE-IMAGINING THE FUTURE of Lutherans Outdoors The work of the LO Board of Directors continues through the process of re-imagining LO. Why is the Board doing this work, you might ask: The church has changed. Our congregations have changed. LO needs to change. “We can’t become what we need to be – by remaining what we are.” Re-imagining consists of performing DEEP DIVE AUDITS of the following areas of Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota: (Completed from Oct. 2022 to April 2023) Philosophy – New Core Values are in place and being lived out at our sites Budget / Finances – New systems for improved function are being implemented Financial Development – Seeking new creative opportunities to increase funding Marketing – Is in the midst of a professional audit to set a defined focus and telling of the LO story Most recent audits have included: (Conducted from April to July) Governance has produced a number of recommendations to improve function, communication, education, and training of the board, along with setting some exciting expectations to set a future vision seeking to serve the needs of God’s people in innovative ways. Site & Facilities is looking at new ways to manage the assets we are blessed to have and to develop a comprehensive system to track current needs and project future needs based on depreciation and a program vision for each site. The board has begun a deep dive into a Program Audit for each site. It is expected that this audit will be packed with recommendations seeking to make LO more responsive to the changes impacting churches, communities, and families. Finally, in October, we will begin our final audit area – Staffing. As these audits are completed, recommendations are authorized by the Board for action. Each recommendation is assigned a task team and completion date. These recommendations help poise LO to further RE-IMAGINE a new and vital strategic direction for the organization as it seeks to meet your needs. Randy Youngquist-Thurow, Deacon Associate Director
