To promote, strengthen and advance programs that have a focus on health and wellness for children and adolescents in Baja California Sur.
To improve the quality of life of children and adolescents in Baja California Sur.
It is a privilege and a deep pleasure to express my deep gratitude to all of those who are part of the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation Community. To our generous donors, thank you; to the doctors and nurses who help our children and adolescents, thank you; to the counselors and aides who serve children in need, thank you; to our committed Board Members, thank you; to our Staff, who put their heart and soul into giving children the opportunity to live healthy, happy and productive lives, thank you. I am regularly inspired by the work of these teams who dedicate their time, energy and lives to helping others.
This year Los Cabos Children’s Foundation celebrates their 21st anniversary and supports 29 organizations who serve over 11,000 children. Giving back to our communities is a privilege for those who are blessed with the health to be able to do so, with the financial wherewithal to be able to do so, and with the faith and determination to be able to do so. These are the soldiers who make our community a better place to live, work and contribute to society in general.
Contained within this report is the magic of the work of Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. We hope you will read this carefully, become an active member of our community and do what you can to enrich your life through helping children.
Sincerely,
Rob Harris Board ChairInvesting in other mission-aligned organizations

You have the opportunity to inspire others
The Spirit of Love was born in 2004 as the second cause served by LCCF and with the purpose of providing care to children and adolescents with congenital heart disease in the state on a permanent basis.
Since 2004, Omaha Children’s Hospital & Medical Center received children from Baja California who needed heart surgery. This inspired us to offer the service in the state through surgical rounds held twice a year at Salvatierra Hospital, in addition to training the entire local team involved in the program, both in Omaha and in La Paz.
Thanks to this, today it is possible to diagnose, give multidisciplinary treatment and perform surgeries throughout the year to children in the state with this health condition. In 2017, this program achieved accreditation before the federal government, through which funds were secured for the detection and treatment of Southern Baja children.
Since 2019, we have been able to assist to all the cases detected through the team of local doctors and nurses.
“I am inspired by the nobility with which children view others. They are a clean slate, the hope for someone who will be better than us.”
In Baja California Sur, congenital malformations, deformities and chromosomal abnormalities are the second cause of death in children between 1 and 4 years old.
–
Approximately 88 babies are born each year in Baja California Sur with congenital heart defects and 22 of them will need attention before they turn one.
Salvatierra Hospital is the only place in Baja California Sur with a team of trained professionals to care for children and adolescents with congenital heart defects, in order to permanently provide them with the necessary treatment throughout the year and ensure specialized and quality follow-up before and after procedures.
Dr. Orlando Solis, Pediatric Cardiologist of the State Pediatric Cardiology Program.
Emma is 3 years old and lives in Loreto, B.C.S. When she was 27 days old she was diagnosed with Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a heart defect that is literally a hole between two parts.
The doctors at her health care provider told them that they could not operate on her and that she had a life expectancy of 6 months. For more than two years, the family continued knocking on doors at different public and private health institutions, as well as civil society organizations, and the answer was always the same: they couldn’t do anything for Emma, since her surgery
was high-risk. One day, someone told them about Los Cabos Children’s Foundation and their joint work with the State Pediatric Cardiology Program at Salvatierra Hospital and in February 2022, Emma had her first appointment, where she underwent a series of tests.
At the next check-up, in September of the same year, they scheduled her surgery and, a week later, Emma was already home with a new opportunity to live.
“The day she was discharged I felt peace - like I was breathing again, calm, like I came back to life too.”
Alondra, Emma’s mom –
The State Pediatric Cardiology Program has performed 338 life-saving procedures on children. Your generosity inspires more families, like Emma’s, to not give up in the search for a better quality of life for their daughters and sons.
Our Spirit of Joy was born with LCCF in 2002.
At that time, in Los Cabos and in all of Baja California Sur there was nowhere to treat children with cancer and this inspired us to seek care solutions.
It all began with the treatment of several children and adolescents in our founder’s hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 2007, children and adolescents with cancer from Baja California Sur began to be treated at the Sinaloa Pediatric Hospital and stayed in a special home for them, the original Casa Valentina.
In 2012, Dr. Eduardo Altamirano, inspired by a family from La Paz, started treating children at the State Oncology Center while the Pediatric HematologyOncology Unit was being adapted at Salvatierra Hospital.
Finally, in April 2013, the medical unit and the home for children with cancer, Casa Valentina BCS, opened their doors to provide children and adolescents with the specialized and quality services they needed, close to their homes and family.
Cancer is the first cause of death by illness in children between 5 and 14 years of age. 10 years ago, there was nowhere to treat children with cancer in the statethey went undiagnosed or died.
Today, almost 10 years after opening a unit, 170 children and adolescents have been treated close to home and with first-class and comprehensive services that not only focus on medical objectives, but also on the emotional well-being of families. The percentage of children who survive 5 years after finishing their treatment, as Miah is today, is one of the best in the country.
Every month, a new patient enters the unit who needs our help to cope with this long process. Your support inspires them to continue, knowing that they are not alone.
Our founder’s actions inspired others to join him in order to create access to high quality medical services for children at a time when there was nothing available in the whole state. 21 years and over 7 million dollars later, the story for children in BCS changed to one where hope is inspired by generosity.
Miah is 10 years old and lives in Cabo San Lucas, B.C.S. When she was 19 months old, Miah was admitted to the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit with a diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. During the 3 years of her medical treatment at Salvatierra Hospital, Miah also received services from Casa Valentina - both are programs supported by Los Cabos Children’s Foundation.
The LCCF Volunteering program offered services such as reading workshops and emotional support to her and her family in order to cope with the treatment
process. In October 2016, Miah had a complication in her lungs, for which she was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the only one in the state to date, where she received immediate attention from medical personnel and it was the first time the high-frequency oscillatory ventilator, donated by LCCF just a month before, was used.
She was discharged in May 2017 and is in her last of the five surveillance years. Miah continues to be cancer free and living a full and happy life.
“It inspires me to see children and adolescents overcome cancer and all their adversities, to see them return home to their families and have another chance at life.”
Dr. Claudia del Real, Pediatric Oncologist UHOPThe percentage of children in Baja California Sur who survive 5 years after finishing their treatment, as Miah is today, is one of the best in the country.
The Spirit of Hope was born in 2013, the creation of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (UTIP), inspired by the accreditation of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit of the Salvatierra Hospital. The creation of the UTIP allowed not only the accreditation of the UHOP, but also the possibility of providing post-operative care to the children and adolescents benefited by the State Pediatric Cardiology Program.
In addition, the UTIP has prevented deaths in children due to accidents and other critical situations and has improved the quality of care for other health issues.
This pillar also supports the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where newborns under 28 days old are cared for, and the Pediatrics Specialty Residency, in which, through the training of residents, the quality of health services available to the children and adolescents of Baja California Sur is improved.
Our Community Attention program is also part of this pillar by being a source of inspiration and hope for many families who do not know how or cannot solve their children’s health issues.
In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) set the “Millennium Goals”, where goal 4 stands out: “Reduce mortality in children under 5 years by twothirds by 2015”.
At LCCF we contribute to the reduction of children and adolescent mortality and morbidity by promoting the opening of better health care spaces such as pediatric intensive care units, since their planned and careful installation can easily reduce mortality by at least 50%.
We also serve families’ needs to ensure that they have access to adequate services and we support the health sector with equipment and training to improve critical health care for children and adolescents in Baja California Sur.
Zazil Flores is a pediatrician who has been part of the pediatrics team at Salvatierra Hospital for 15 years. Last year, she was named Secretary of Health by the Baja California Sur State Government and she shares how she is inspired by your generosity.
“For more than 10 years I’ve witnessed a constant growth in the possibilities of medical care and services offered to the children of Baja California Sur.
Through constant communication and teamwork between Los Cabos Children’s Foundation, Salvatierra Hospital, many nonprofits, and the government, a strong network of health services has been created to support our children and their families, particularly those who face more challenges.
In our public hospitals, we have improved the quality of attention and increased our possibilities to treat more challenging illnesses in a permanent way thanks to new medical equipment, permanent supplies and, specially, the constant training of our medical team, because we’re inspired by the dedication and commitment of our nurses and doctors to all of our patients, particularly the ones with the most critical needs.”
“Saving the lives or improving the health of critically ill children is what inspires me every day.”
Dr. Ibeth Reyes, Pediatric Intensivist of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Mizuky is a 10-year-old girl who lives in San Bartolo, Baja California Sur. She is characterized by being friendly, smiling and always positive. You would never imagine that she was born with a colorectal malformation and from a very young age she has had to undergo several digestive and urinary tract surgeries.
Unfortunately, in Mexico there are very few specialists who deal with this type of case, which has made the process complicated and slow. Mizuky and her family come to our Community Attention program in 2022 due to the need to pay for her ninth surgery.
The procedure that she required was very expensive, so the support of the community was essential and together we were able to ensure that Mizuky received the surgery that she needed and that today allows her to have a better life.
In Baja California Sur there are hundreds of children like Mizuky with special health care needs that we do not yet treat in the state. The generosity of the community inspires us to join them in finding solutions. You inspire hope in families, like Mizuky’s.
“Thanks to you and the people who supported us, I was able to take one more step towards being well and being able to have a more normal life.”
Mizuky –
Since its foundation, LCCF’s work in the community has been inspired by collaboration with other nonprofits to improve the quality of life of children and adolescents in Baja California Sur.
The Spirit of Service was born in 2006 in order to support organizations that address health issues such as general health and disabilities.
In 2017, our desire to expand our knowledge of the health needs of children in Baja California Sur inspired us to open our grant making process to all nonprofits in the state, which has allowed us to multiply the number of programs supported in this pillar, as well as work on new health issues, such as mental health and prevention.
We continue working to learn about the existing needs in the communities, also hand in hand with organizations focused on research, with the creation of the Baja California Sur Health Diagnosis, which was carried out in 2018 and is being updated to make a great project a reality in Los Cabos that will undoubtedly transform access to health services for children and adolescents in the state.
There are close to 8,000 children and adolescents with disabilities in Los Cabos that require attention. An extension of CRIT will open its doors in 2024.
According to information produced by the census carried out by INEGI in Baja California Sur, 4% of the population has a disability, of which 12% are children under 14 years of age.
The issue of disability has been a focus of LCCF for more than 10 years, but it was in 2017, after the opening of LCCF’s grant making process, that the number of applicant organizations dedicated to disabilities increased.
Knowing the need for care for children and adolescents with disabilities, has inspired that, in the last 5 years, this health issue has been the one that has achieved the most growth, going from 1 to 11 supported organizations.
Jafet is 4 years old, lives in Cabo San Lucas and has hypotonic syndrome - he has trouble controlling his muscles and has had loss of movement and speech. 2 years ago, he couldn’t support his head and trunk, much less stand on his own feet.
He came to Equinoterapias Hossana, where he began his therapies and has seen a notable improvement in strength by sitting upright on the horse. Jafet is delighted to visit his friend, Vanilla, and can now communicate through gestures and shows how happy he is doing the exercises.
In 2019, a year before Jafet arrived at Equinoterapias Hossana, this organization entered LCCF’s annual grant request process for the first time. In addition to financial support, they received the first result of the non-financial support that LCCF offers to the members of its Partner Program network, by being beneficiaries of a corporate volunteering activity in which employees of one of our donor companies gave maintenance to their facilities.
During 2020, they had the opportunity to be benefited again, this time by a group of volunteers from a foreign company that gave the organization’s therapists a new space. Also, in 2022, and in collaboration with United Way Mexico, International Community Foundation, El Dorado & Chileno Bay Foundations, and Riu Hotels & Resorts, we opened a playroom in their facilities which will allow them to expand the services they provide to the families they assist.
Since they became an LCCF Partner Program, they have received a series of training sessions that encouraged and motivated Equinoterapias Hossana to formalize the process of seeking to become a tax exempt organization authorized by Mexican fiscal authorities. Evelyn, its Executive Director, is convinced that with greater formality and professionalism Equinoterapias Hossana will be able to seek sustainability and support more children and adolescents in Los Cabos through their therapies.
We are grateful to be able to inspire organizations, like Equinoterapias Hossana, to improve and grow their impact in the community, thanks to your generosity.
“When you do things with love, inspiration is born in others.”Evelyn Trejo, Director of Equinoterapias Hossana.
Thanks to a health diagnosis that we funded in 2018, we were able to confirm that the health issues that have been supported respond to the most relevant health needs in children and adolescents in the state and that there are others that could become important as the population continues to grow.
The programs dedicated to screen the general health and well-being of children inspire us to strengthen the support we offer, learn more about our environment and detect other critical issues.
It is key to the fulfillment of our mission to have a profound knowledge of the community’s needs and the projects that serve them.
Tadeo is 5 years old and lives in Pescadero. His family came to Padrino Children’s Foundation when he was only two years old, seeking guidance because Mateo had not yet begun to speak.
Since his parents suffer from hearing loss, they thought that Tadeo had inherited it and that was why he didn’t speak. When Tadeo arrived at the Foundation, he cried a lot for the mere fact of being in the waiting room; it was not possible to perform a physical examination on him and communication in any way with him was practically impossible.
He was screened by neurology, pediatrics, and audiology and was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder + Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder.
Thanks to an accurate diagnosis and the commitment of his family to follow up on therapies and strategies at home, Mateo has made significant progress.
The family continues to receive pediatric and psychiatric services, family counseling, and periodic neurorehabilitation evaluations, as well as support to attend physical, occupational, sports, and virtual reality therapy, as well as psychological services, at CRIT.
“I am inspired to help children and improve the lives of their families.”
Nancy Naigle, Board Member ofIn Mexico, of the total federal budget allocated to health, only 2% is directed to mental health and 80% of these resources are directed to serving adults. These figures are alarming considering that 50% of mental disorders begin before the age of 21, as reported by the National Survey of Psychiatric Epidemiology.
In 2018, LCCF began its support of this health issue by recognizing the importance of bringing quality mental health services and professionals to the children and adolescents in Baja California Sur.
Preventive medicine focuses on people and communities with medical practices that prevent and avoid disease.
Inspired by our Partner Programs, in 2017 we decided to go beyond intervention, promoting a preventive complement in each of the programs we support and promoting initiatives that seek to reduce obesity and addictions to transform the quality of life of children and adolescents in Baja California Sur.
Change the world, by inspiring others to help!
LCCF Volunteering was formally born in Los Cabos in 2015, in response to the interest of people in the community to offer their talents, skills, and passions for the benefit of children and their families. In the last 8 years, our volunteers have worked on the program’s goals and structure, managing to consolidate it as an internal program with its own mission, vision and values, aligned with those of Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. The focus of the time and talent of our volunteers is organized in 6 committees:
8 189 15,094 Donated Hours 384 Activities Performed
years 369
Our Community Attention Program was created in 2016 with the purpose of serving children and adolescents with critical health needs that are not covered by their healthcare provider or that their family cannot afford.
7 years
Los Cabos Children’s Foundation’s capacity building efforts began in 2016 as a tool to provide the different programs supported by LCCF a space for integration, where they could share experiences and work together. In 2018, based on a detection of specific training needs, we focused on providing more opportunities for strengthening related to professionalization, best practices and transparency, as well as operational issues, such as board of directors management and fundraising, among others.
We seek to enhance the capacities of nonprofits in Baja California Sur, which is why, in 2020, our Capacity Building Program evolved to become one of the internal programs of LCCF with an operating budget of its own. With the support from our Strategic Ally, the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (CEMEFI), we increased the number of training sessions and referred our Partner Programs so they could receive different specialized support services.
Our Strategic Allies help us to achieve our mission. Thanks to them we can multiply the effects of our actions with the common goal of serving BCS families.
Teamwork inspires our desire to continue learning to better serve our community. This moves us to find common ground with other organizations that have mission alignment to improve the quality of life of children in our state.
Delivery of 216,000 food packages to more than 94,000 vulnerable families.
Delivery of 33,000 personal protection supplies to 33 public health institutions.
Support for the improvement of health infrastructure through medical programs.
Support for the improvement of children’s wellbeing and quality of life through support to social assistance shelters.
The desire of Los Cabos Children’s Foundation to improve the quality of life of children and adolescents in Baja California Sur always leads us to push our limitations and seek alliances with organizations that are also inspired to invest in strengthening the available childhood services in the state.
We have Strategic Allies with whom we have sought, founded, and strengthened collective efforts, such as the Baja California Sur Community Alliance, thanks to which we were able to reach more than 94,000 vulnerable families during the pandemic. Its predecessor, the Los Cabos Community Alliance, created and made the Teleton Bus project a reality, which since 2020 transports children to La Paz for specialized medical care and rehabilitation. From this alliance, in 2022 and together with Teleton Foundation and El Dorado & Chileno Bay Foundations
once more, the dream that more than two decades ago inspired our founder to create Los Cabos Children’s Foundation was resumed: bringing specialized services closer to families of Los Cabos through a campus for children that will include an extension of CRIT BCS in the first stage in 2024, and later more specialized servicesfrom critical health care to mental health and prevention programs.
This project is in the planning and financing stage with the support of various relevant actors and tools such as the health diagnosis that LCCF put together in 2018 and was updated at the beginning of 2022, to identify the needs of the growing population in Los Cabos, as well as as the necessary infrastructure for their attention in a sustainable way.
The dream of our founder continues to materialize day by day and your generosity inspires us to promote, strengthen and advance projects that bring the community together and transform the reality of thousands of families with the hope of a better quality of life.
The collaborative work between the State Government of Baja California Sur and Los Cabos Children’s Foundation has marked a before and after in the history of our state. The joint investment in quality services at Salvatierra Hospital and in the social assistance centers of the State Family System, has multiplied the capacity for specialized health care and wellness services for children and adolescents. 10 years and $4.5 million dollars later, this effort has made it possible to transform the life opportunities of thousands of families in the state and has given doctors and nurses the chance to do what they love with the certainty that the training, equipment and supplies necessary for permanent and quality care, allow them to save lives. We celebrate these life opportunities that your investment makes a reality every day and we continue to be inspired by your generosity to improve the quality of life for children in Baja California Sur.
“We are inspired by your generosity. We thank you for the opportunity given to us to do our jobs in the best possible way, and for the gift of seeing our children and youth have a better quality of life. Let’s be the change we want to see in Baja California Sur!”
2. Strengthening and specialization: Continuous learning and team-work motivate us to seek a better future for our community. Being able to enrich our team’s knowledge by interacting with organizations with wide experience and proven results is an opportunity we value and appreciate.
3. Joining forces for specific issues and goals in children’s health: Childhood Cancer
The growing needs of those most vulnerable have inspired us to reach beyond our own boundaries to seek the collaboration of all members of our community to work together to have a greater collective impact.
Collaboration has been part of LCCF’s core since its inception. Sharing mission and vision with other nonprofit organizations and even with socially responsible companies has inspired us to achieve great goals for the children in Baja California Sur. In 2022, thanks to the initiative and generosity of the residential development, Querencia, we joined Smile Train’s international mission to build a statewide program that provides comprehensive, quality, and permanent care to children and adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate. LCCF coordinates the collaboration of different actors, such as the Baja California Sur Ministry of Health and our Partner Program for Cleft Lip and Palate in
Salvatierra Hospital, the Altruistic Cleft Lip and Palate Program of Los Cabos, and our Partner Program, Terapia ComuniCabo, as well as private hospitals in Los Cabos, such as H+. In just 7 months, we were able to train 20 medical professionals and reached over 40 children and adolescents through assessments, comprehensive medical follow-up, and 16 surgeries.
When Alex’s parents found out about his condition, it was a very strong blow. Despite the fact that his mother Claudia is a teacher and knows how to deal with Children with special needs, no experience could prepare them for what was to come. Alex did not only need surgeries to achieve a better quality of life, but he had to receive comprehensive orthodontics, psychology and speech therapy services in order to improve his communication skills and his chances of school integration. Alex received his third surgery last September which will allow him to take a big step forward in this long process. You inspire families, like Alex’s, with hope to achieve their inclusion in society so they can live a full and happy life.
At Los Cabos Children’s Foundation we want to raise awareness about the most serious health challenges faced by children and we want to bring about the change we wish to see in our environment. You can inspire to improve the quality of life of hundreds of children and adolescents in Baja California Sur through your company, with actions of social responsibility by adopting one of our fundraising options:
