Intermediate classes debated

Unlike Silverdale School, which has been fighting tooth and nail to retain Year 7 and 8 classes, Gulf Harbour School is considering voluntarily divesting itself of intermediate provision. Silverdale School is still waiting for a final decision from the Ministry of Education – the school wants to retain its intermediate classes but last year the Ministry advised it may have to revert to being a Year 1–6 school to help with pressure on its roll. Meanwhile, Gulf Harbour School is in the process of seeking feedback from parents on whether or not to retain its Year 7 and 8s. After looking into the issue in some depth, Gulf Harbour School’s board has recommended that Year 7 and 8 classes be phased out. Reasons given include a decline in numbers in that age group at the school, leading to mixed classes, and inadequate funding for the additional curriculum needs of the older students. Feedback from parents is currently being analysed by the board, after which there will be a chance for wider community input.

Advice is also provided on what to do if someone comes in with a weapon.

While many are already aware of the issues, Constable Murphy says

The majority of the storeowners we spoke to are from the ethnic community and they are feeling vulnerable. They may also not be comfortable dealing with police and this operation helped

break down those barriers and build up trust.”

Orewa Community Constable Mike Brown says that Police in this region are learning from the aggravated robberies of these kinds of stores that are happening increasingly in other parts of Auckland. “We want to try and prevent those activities happening up here,” he says.

Rough roundabout Like the local board, I have my fingers crossed for better service under the new maintenance contracts (HM May 3). I hope that one of the first things on the list might be the roundabout at the Silverdale exit from the northern motorway. It is a very large roundabout and was once planted up, but is now a bit of a disgrace as an entranceway to an area. We cringe every time we drive around it (which is most days!). I fear this might be an Auckland Transport thing in which case, judging from how long it takes to get a bike rack

I found this dead creature near the bush opposite Whangaparaoa Library last week. It seems that the hedgehog put his head into the drink container to extract a slug that was in there or to lick up any remaining drink. Because of his prickles, he couldn’t pull his head back out of the narrow entry hole and probably suffocated. Put your rubbish in the bin people, or take it home and recycle it. It’s not that hard. Whatever you think of hedgehogs, it is shameful that an animal suffered and died in this way. Terry Moore, Editor

Right wins over might The NZ Commerce Commission made an important and courageous decision this month when it declined a proposed merger between Fairfax and NZME. Had the proposal been approved, the merged entity would have controlled nearly 90 per cent of the daily newspaper circulation in NZ and an overwhelming majority of traffic to online sources of NZ news.

So what, you might ask? For starters, one large media entity in NZ would produce opportunities for powerful and ambitious lobbyists to use their advertising muscle to have their interests protected and promoted. It would also dilute the range of editorial opinions that inform community debate, not to mention the impact it would have on the quality and breadth of news coverage. Small independent newspapers, like the one you are reading right now, could find themselves squeezed out of the market by a sustained assault on their advertising market, which they could neither counter nor survive.

The Commission’s decision recognises that “the media” is not just a business in the narrowest sense. Yes, media companies must be viable, but they must also be guided by the founding principles of the press – newsrooms must be well-resourced so they can investigate and write their stories without fear or favour.

They must remain the watchdogs of society, holding the powerful to account and providing the voiceless with a place to tell their stories. Newsrooms that are continually gutted to balance the books, while company executives and shareholders cream off the profits, threaten the very fabric of a fair and healthy democracy.

We applaud the Commerce Commission for a decision that steers NZ away from the concentration of media into the hands of a few and towards a diverse landscape of voices and opinions.

The Bachelor looks back The Bachelor NZ final is on this weekend (Sunday, May 21 on Three) and last week its star, Zac Franich, who is also head coach at Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club, dropped in for a chat with Hibiscus Matters.

The paper featured a cartoon about the show in an earlier edition and his family requested copies of the artwork: these were handed over to Zac by editor Terry Moore.

Zac says while he won’t miss the rose ceremonies one little bit, and is getting merciless teasing from his mates, being NZ’s Bachelor was an amazing experience and 100 percent worthwhile.

“I’m not going to live it down for a long time with my friends, but I expected that,” he says. “I wouldn’t have changed it for anything – I found out a lot about myself, met some amazing girls and got to see some amazing places.” One highlight was time spent with rescued elephants in Thailand.

The 28-year-old admits he struggled with the rose ceremonies: “I was essentially grading girls on their compatibility with me and that made me very uncomfortable,” he says.

“Especially as it went on and feelings were involved, that was really hard.”

He says the competitive aspect was challenging for everyone and he didn’t take interactions between the girls too seriously. “The girls were in a strange position too – seeing the same guy,

living together, missing their friends and family, so you are looking at people out of their comfort zone.”

Zac says he focused on sharing his time as fairly as possible and remaining open to the whole experience.

“I went in holding the kids I train at the surf club in mind. They hadn’t seen this more personal side of me and I figured if I was open and confident and able to talk about feelings, they would see that it’s ok to do that. It’s something a lot of guys could get better at.”

Being recognised and asked for photos on the street, he says, is “kind of cool” – he likes being able to make people smile.

Once he is able to openly go out with the woman who won the final rose, he says it will be important to be confident in each other and their relationship and not feel pressure from the public taking an interest. “The moment we start worrying about what other people think, is where we go wrong,” he says.

“However long we are together, we are the ones that matter.”

A Stillwater roadside has been given an artistic facelift with this original carving

by Auckland sculptor and artist Phil Bonham.

Roadside carving a first in Stillwater A standout new feature on the road that winds down into Stillwater is causing drivers to pull over and get out to take a closer look.

The large sculpture of two geckos was carved from the stump of a pine tree on the berm outside a private Stillwater residence by Auckland carver Phil Bonham.

Phil says he was commissioned to do the sculpture by the owners of the property who had to cut down the pine. They chose him after seeing his Seat of Life sculpture at Sanders Reserve in Paremoremo.

The work took Phil about nine days but was completed in short bursts over several months with the final oiling completed last week.

Phil researched geckos to get their sinuous forms just right, while upscaling the size and chunkiness substantially. Then he got to work with a chainsaw, later using hand tools for the finer details.

Originally from the North Shore, Phil studied art in Hawaii and works in

a range of media as well as teaching art. His work is in several public and private collections but it’s the first time he has carved anything on a roadside. He says he is happy with how it’s turned out and the amount of attention it’s drawing from passing drivers.

Seawall submissions small in number

The public feedback period on the resource consent application for the Orewa coastal walkway and seawall closed last Friday, May 12. As at May 10, just 13 submissions on the project had been made to Auckland Council. A hearing date is likely to be set for late July/early August to allow the public to speak to their submissions. The proposed construction involves building a footpath and landscaping along the section of the esplanade reserve from Kohu Street to Marine View; the establishment of a seawall along approximately 600m of coastline as well as access ramps and stairs.

Earlier this month we had the release of the Little Spotted Kiwi in Shakespear Regional Park. What an inspiring community effort this is. Once again it highlights the importance of our volunteers whose time, effort and enthusiasm is amazing. I along with our other local board members express their grateful thanks to every one of you.

We are working on the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Plan, which is going out for consultation on May 22. This is your chance to let us, your local board, know what you would like to achieve in our community over the next three years.

Later this year we will be hearing submissions on this draft plan and you may like to attend a meeting to elaborate more on your submission about what you would like to see happen. We are interested to hear your ideas about how we can do things differently so that we achieve a better result.

The area that I get most complaints about is the service standard levels in parks and on roadsides. We, your local board, are working hard to achieve a better result for our communities particularly in areas that our communities treasure. We will be working collaboratively with new providers who have just been appointed to our area. This is the first time since Auckland Council was set up in 2010 that the new contracts have been awarded, so hopefully we will see some efficiencies gained.

When consulting on the annual plan, people commented “we don’t mind paying more as long as we get our fair share and we see something for our rates”. I urge you all to take this next opportunity to influence change and if there is something that you think is needed in your area, have your say on the draft local board plan.

The Hibiscus Local Board members are setting up a face-to-face forum so that members of the public who want to discuss an issue with a board member, can make an appointment to come and see one of us. We are still working through the logistics including the best time of the day to do this. We are keen to trial this for six months and see how it works for you. We will formalise the format at a board meeting and advertise dates and times.

Getting rid of student financial debt and keeping their skills at home.

New Zealand First will implement upfront investment (UFI) in post-secondary education. This policy will remove the financial burden of student loans, particularly on our young people and replace this with a payable skill debt to the country.

The UFI Tertiary policy will reduce both the human and financial waste currently created by inadequate work force planning and under resourced careers advice.

Our post-secondary study suite of policies, which includes a universal student allowance, will remove current lurching from skill shortage crisis to individual profession oversupply.

To make this happen New Zealand First will: Bring back Workforce Planning: • We will reinstate the leadership role for workforce planning development by Industry Training Organisations and require all Government Ministries, where the state provides the majority of services, to establish and participate in planning leadership eg MOE, MOH, MSD, Corrections etc.

• We will amend the Tertiary Education Commission funding model to be a control mechanism when requiring ITOs to develop workforce plans for 5 years, with a forecast for 20 years.

• We will only fully fund the required number of identified industry places with a 5% to 10% buffer for natural attrition.

Regency Lake quality guaranteed by Country Club A dispute over payment for grass carp could have a big impact on the appearance and use of the artificial waterways around Gulf Harbour, including the largest one, Regency Lake. However, Gulf Harbour Country Club has said that it will ensure that won’t happen.

The grass carp are herbivores and eat weeds that grow in fresh water. Owner of the carp, NZ Waterways Restoration, is in the process of removing them from the waterways around Gulf Harbour because of a dispute with the organisation responsible for the lakes, Gulf Harbour Country Club.

The word ‘bach’ conjures up images of relaxing times at the beach and it’s that same calm environment with a friendly Kiwi feel that Dr Vishu Agarwal is aiming to recreate in her new dental practice.

This is reflected in a comfortable interior, soft music and, even more importantly, in the dentists’ ability to talk with, and calm, patients.

The Dental Bach opened in the New World complex in Stanmore Bay early this month providing all general dentistry services.

Vishu grew up in Delhi and says she wanted to become a dentist from a young age.

“I get the most satisfaction from being in a profession that is about making people smile with confidence, and taking away their pain,” Vishu says.

After spending time working and furthering her studies in Australia, Vishu moved to New Zealand three years ago with her husband Sam. She has worked in a wide variety of Auckland dental practices but says it’s exciting to now be opening her own.

Preventative dentistry is something she feels passionate about and she hopes to spread that message through educational programmes and other outreach projects.

Jonathan Ma bought his first café, Emi Deli in Orewa, more than nine years ago. At the time, it was a big step to take after 10 years as Mr Whippy.

In fact Jonathan was the biggest Mr Whippy operator in Auckland, owning a total of 10 trucks.

He says he bought the café because he liked the environment. “I didn’t know anything about the business and learned everything from hands-on experience,” he says. “The priorities were very clear – always look after your customers and hire good staff.”

Hard work, and a focus on his motto of Great Food, Great Coffee, Great Service, paid off with Emi Deli Orewa earning a fine reputation for keeping its many regulars happy.

Jonathan says quality was always key, starting with fresh produce, free range eggs and great ingredients. Everything is made fresh on the premises, right down to the homemade Hollaindaise.

“That attention to detail pays off in the taste,” Jonathan says.

Emi Deli likes to keep prices affordable, but not at the expense of quality. “When it comes to food, you get what you pay for.”

The practice has two surgeries with state of the art equipment and will be open seven days. As well as services such as crowns, bridges, dentures, root canals and whitening, Vishu is a registered Fastbraces provider. This is a system that Vishu describes as “fast and comfortable”. It uses specially shaped brackets that can shorten the length of time that someone needs to wear braces, depending on the individual patient.

For the protection of patients, Vishu says one of her priorities is stringent infection control.

As well as a cabinet selection, the café has breakfast and lunch menus and offers a catering service. It is open seven days a week. In charge in the kitchen is chef Brett Allen, former head chef at Altura Café in Auckland.

Jonathan says it made sense to open a second café in Whangaparaoa to attract new customers, as well as give his regulars who come from the peninsula a close-to-home option.

Putting together the café at the top of the Plaza (next to Eddie Law 100%) has blown the budget and been more of a challenge than Jonathan had anticipated, but he is sure it is worth it.

“We’ve made a modern comfortable place to come and enjoy food and coffee and we’re happy with it and excited to bring our service to Whangaparaoa.”

Fundraising concert with ‘family values’ A concert featuring one of the country’s best selling country music artists, Dennis Marsh, as well as The Toner Sisters is being held in Orewa to raise funds for organisations that help young people.

The New Horizon Show has been organised by Jim Morrogh who has a background in the entertainment business and a strong interest in the wellbeing of young people. He was looking for a way to support local organisations that have the welfare of youth at heart, and a concert seemed the perfect option, given his show business connections.

Jim says that the concert features easy listening music and family values. As well as the two headline acts, there will

be a performance by Brigid Sinclair’s ACHoired Taste choir, which performs a mix of world, folk and gospel music.

Local musician Nick Jones will play electric violin and keyboards; Nick is also leading a six-piece band of local musicians that has formed to back Dennis Marsh and The Toner Sisters.

Profits from the show are being donated to Rugged Learning Adventures and the Hibiscus Coast Youth Centre.

Rugged Learning Adventures (formerly Windy Ridge), near Warkworth, is a camp that combines adventure farm retreats with phonics, to help those struggling with reading and the Hibiscus Coast Youth Centre in Western Reserve, Orewa, provides a wide range of programmes and

support that provides a ‘safe haven’ for youth. Rugged Learning Adventures will put the donation towards its current building improvements and the purchase of a gas fridge, while the Youth Centre says among the items the money will help towards is a second van to transport young people to and from the centre.

It will be digital HD projections with surround sound inside the hall. Organiser Urs Bauer says it will be a unique experience to watch films in the newly renovated town hall while raising money for it.

“It’s good to have a town centre where arts can be performed. Performing arts, music and film is an important part of life,” Urs says.

Urs and his wife Denise staged the first big screen open air cinema in New Zealand at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour in 2004. It led to running movies in parks for councils and organisations, with 40,000 turning out to 22 different parks in Auckland last year.

Urs says he followed his appreciation of great documentaries and his passion for music to select the best music documentaries.

The festival features 12 films over the four days with stories on artists including The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Ed Sheeran and The Topp Twins.

Urs says if it goes well he would like to do more regular cinema fundraisers at the town hall.

Winter work will pay off Many gardeners think that as the autumn gardening season comes to an end it is time to collect seeds, harvest the fruit, cover the beds with compost and mulch and retreat inside with their favourite gardening books and seed catalogues to plan for the spring garden.

Nothing could be further from the truth: now is the perfect time to think about winter gardening – especially if you are growing your own food.

All the signs are there of good food production in our ever-expanding urban areas. Ripe feijoas, persimmons, figs and guavas either being harvested or vanishing daily, eaten by hungry birds.

In my Manly garden I have dug up the kumara, gathered the pumpkins and am experimenting with storage Getting garlic planted now improves options. Carrots are in the fridge, its flavour. while the beetroot will happily survive in the garden for now. The leeks and onion seedlings have been planted, the shallots divided and some early cauliflower and broccoli are braving the last of the white butterfly caterpillars.

Cold nights and shorter cooler crisp days with lower light levels may be upon us, but the soil is still warm and onions, leeks, beetroot, brassicas, peas, shallots, broad beans, parsnips, swedes and garlic can all be planted now. Especially after the welcome rains we had recently.

Prepare for winter gardening by pulling out all the rotting tomatoes, the last of the zucchini, and cucumbers, which have overstayed their welcome with the unusually warm autumn weather. Pull out those pumpkins that are still producing and if there are signs of mildew, mould or blight, make sure they go out with the household garbage rather than into the compost.

Taking advantage of the heaps of seaweed on the beach after recent storms, I have collected plenty and dug it well in.

I have also just planted garlic, choosing a bed that has not grown alliums before.

Garlic is a bulb and most varieties need some cold weather to develop the great taste you want. Garlic cloves planted in the autumn quickly develop roots so the plants are well established when the colder winter weather arrives. Garlic cannot compete with weeds (or for that matter, birds), when first planted so once the bulbs are planted I cover them with screens. The shoots are mulched with dried grass clippings or leaf mold and cloched to keep off the birds.

Leaf mould takes a good year to develop into that rich humus that will provide food not only for your plants but also for the beneficial soil organisms. So don’t let all those fallen leaves go to waste.

Ways to reduce power costs Here are some tips to avoid power and electricity costs escalating over winter. yy Talk to your electricity company about their plans. Most provide options including direct debits at a flat rate all year round, pre-payment meters and low use rates and apps to monitor your energy on a hourly and daily basis. yy Most of your electricity bill will go on hot water so use less if you can.

Set your washing machine on a cold wash and rinse your dishes in cold water. Take short showers instead of baths. Showers use 60% less water than baths. yy Fix dripping taps. A dripping hot tap can cost $80 a year but a washer to fix it costs less than $1. yy If your hot water cylinder is old, keep the heat in by using a hot water cylinder wrap. These are available from hardware stores. Make sure the thermostat is set to produce a temperature of 55C at the tap. yy Always turn the lights off in rooms when you leave. If you are using energy efficient light bulbs it is better to leave them on if you are returning within ten minutes.

yy Appliances that have a standby function (such as TVs, stereos, mobile chargers, computers or microwaves) should be turned off at the wall. This can save you up to $75 a year. yy Clothes dryers can be very expensive to run so try not to use them unless you have to. Heated towel rails are expensive and cost around $120 a year to run. yy Make sure there is generous air space behind the back of your fridge and try to locate it out of direct sunlight, or in a cooler room like the laundry.

Don’t open the fridge door too often or leave it open. yy Make sure you cool food before putting it in the fridge. Turn off your second or ‘drinks’ fridge – this could be costing you $190 a year. yy When cooking, always keep lids on pots and use as little water as possible to cook foods. Simmer rather than boil food and if possible use a microwave, as this uses 30 to 40 per cent less power than a conventional oven. Defrost food naturally if possible, (in the fridge is best) rather than in the microwave.

It started as two mates listening to records over a beer at a local bar, but a few more fans of the way music sounds from a vinyl disc, played on a turntable, are joining in and more are welcome.

Local musician Dean Morris and his mate Andy Derbyshire (who DJs as D-Vinyl) share a love of vinyl and recently have been getting together at the Good Home in Whangaparaoa to play their favourite tracks.

Andy, who restores record players, made a record player especially for the occasion – putting speakers into an old TV and wiring it to an 80s

turntable.

Dean says it has that “good old school 80s record sound”, and when the pair played their records on it, others wanted to join in.

“People came up to listen and talk about records,” he said.

Anyone with a love of vinyl is welcome to bring a favourite record and play a track or two, joining like-minded music lovers over a beer (or two).

Lack of volunteers sees Red Cross branch close The local branch of the Red Cross will close at the end of this month, and long serving members say it is sad and disappointing that it has come to this.

The branch, based in Silverdale Pioneer Village, has been operating for more than 20 years. Only four people remain on the committee – chair Maureen Holliday and member John Hyde have both been there almost since the start.

Maureen, aged 86, says they are all in their eighties or nineties and their efforts over many years to attract new, younger volunteers, have failed.

Meanwhile, the membership got older and some moved away or died.

In addition, the call for some of their services, such as Meals on Wheels, declined locally.

With the lease on their premises expiring on May 31, the decision was made to call it a day.

“When I started 19 years ago we had three teams doing Meals on Wheels – Orewa, Whangaparaoa and Dairy Flat,” Maureen says. “It got down to one group doing all of it and a few years ago, when we stopped, we were only delivering to one person.”

Over the years branch members have also run first aid courses and assisted with blood bank services and Red Cross collections. They raised around $3000 a year for Red Cross charities.

“We are all first aid trained and were available to help Civil Defence or Police,” Maureen says. “Now our head office says they can get up here in vans from other parts of Auckland if the need arises.”

Long time member John Hyde says he is disappointed that people on the Coast have not supported the branch.

“We have asked for help, many times, but no one these days is prepared to give their time free of charge.”

Maureen agrees, saying it’s sad that there will be no representatives here.

She says the same thing is happening at several other branches and that communication with the national body, based in Manukau, has also declined in recent years.

Red Cross’ northern humanitarian services manager, Amanda Aye, says the service has more volunteers and members than ever before. “Around 12,000 New Zealanders support us, from volunteering during emergencies, in our shops or as a branch member,” she says.

Amanda says that the Hibiscus Coast branch has done an incredible job fundraising, delivering services and getting involved in emergency preparedness.

“While we may not have a visual presence on the Coast, Red Cross is still present,” she says. “Locally we are involved with schools, run our shops

and still have a branch in East Coast Bays. There are also many people from the Coast who help out with a variety of volunteering roles across Auckland. We cannot do the work we do without the tremendous support of our volunteers and members – they are the backbone of Red Cross.”

Do we want the Hibiscus Coast soap box derby?

Unless an organisation steps forward to take over the running of the local Soap Box Derby, it may have run its last race.

This year’s event, held in April, was the tenth to be held on Brightside Road, Stanmore Bay. The event, run by Whangaparaoa Rotary Club, provides youngsters and their supporters with a race experience in trolleys imported as kitsets from

America, while benefiting local charities.

Last year the organising committee said that this year’s derby would be their last, and actively sought new volunteers to take up the reins. Until recently, they were hopeful that they could secure the event’s future, however no one has come forward.

Whangaparaoa Rotary Soap Derby chair Terry Clarkson says the Soap Box Derby is well funded, with

Auckland Council providing a grant of $10,000 annually.

However, getting the two-day event (the local race and the national finals) up and running requires a lot of work and time from volunteers.

Mr Clarkson says it would be a shame for the local kids and their families and supporters if the event has to fold.

The difficult thing about nutrition is that there seems to be a so-called ‘expert’ on every street corner telling you what you should (and shouldn’t) be eating – especially if you want to lose weight.

There are new diet books on the shelves each week, new research studies and so much information focuses on what to eat. Whether it is Paleo, sugar-free or low fat – the list goes on.

If you want to improve your nutrition and health I suggest you step back and look at things from another angle.

Instead of focusing so much on what you are eating, start looking at why you are eating certain things in the first place.

A huge part of ‘the why’ comes down to habits. Whether it’s the 3 o’clock chocolate fix or the energy drink that becomes a daily event, food habits develop quickly and can lead to energy slumps and weight gain over time.

To change a habit, it is useful to understand how they are formed in the first place. Charles Duhigg provides a fascinating overview in his book The Power of Habit.

Duhigg outlines the ‘habit loop’, based upon the sequence of cue/routine/ reward. Certain cues are followed by routines, ending in a reward. Research done in the 1990s showed that it is this sequence that makes habits so powerful and hard to break because they create neurological cravings. Once a craving is starting to form and we anticipate the reward, we have a high desire to get that reward. It is this craving that drives the habit loop.

Most of us can relate to the habits formed around eating certain desirable foods.

Think of what happens when you see a box of doughnuts! If we had never eaten this product then we are unlikely to have any reaction when we see it. However, once our brain learns that a doughnut has sugar and carbohydrate (particularly if we like sweet foods) then it will start anticipating the sugar high. Our brains will push us towards that box. If we don’t actually eat the doughnut, we can be left with a feeling of disappointment or even anxiety.

If you want to change a habit, Duhigg suggests that they key is to start recognising the cues and provide the same reward but change the routine.

Think of alternative routines that will satisfy the craving brain and provide a more positive outcome. For example, a cue might be a 3pm coffee break. The routine of eating a chocolate bar is providing the reward of a burst of energy.

This routine could be changed to a quick walk around the block at 3pm, which would be a much healthier way to get energised.

Looking at not just what you are eating, but why you are eating it in the first place, is a very powerful way to start changing habits and, ultimately, your health.

Pink fundraisers taking off on the Hibiscus Coast Locals are getting behind Pink Ribbon Breakfast month in a big way this year, with breakfasts (and lunches) being held all over the Coast to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Raising money for good causes is nothing new for Dazzling Violets ‘Queen’, Margie Loftus of Orewa, but this year she is going the extra mile, organising a big Pink Ribbon lunch with the assistance of her fellow Violets.

It’s bound to be a splendid occasion, with Margie making the gourmet finger food herself. She says she decided to hold a lunch because “lunch is more exciting than breakfast” – bubbles will be served and there will be numerous prize draws and a raffle, all included in the ticket price of $50.

The Dazzling Violets are an offshoot of the Red Hatters, with members dressing up to the nines at every opportunity.

The Pink Ribbon lunch will be held on May 27 at Sharks Bar & Function Centre, Victor Eaves Park,Orewa, from 12noon to 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome – guests are asked to wear

Desperate plea for food answered by community kindness The value of the free pantry outside Whangaparaoa Hall was highlighted earlier this month when a woman in desperate need left a note inside.

The note was found by Love Soup Hibiscus Coast volunteers, who posted the plea on social media.

That same day, several cans of vegan food were placed there for collection.

The pantry was built outside the hall last September.

Donated non-perishable food is left in it, which is free for anyone to take. The service is overseen by Love Soup.

Love Soup’s Julie King says people are taking items from the pantry, particularly under cover of darkness.

“We are getting quite a few people in the type of situation this vegan lady is in – in great need,” Julie says. “They prefer to come to the pantry when they are unlikely to be seen although some do make contact with us or come to our free Sunday meals.”

Eave’s Bush Appreciation Group coordinator Laurie Rands says the group is also on high alert for kauri dieback and that it’s very important for people entering the bush reserve to ensure that they spray their shoes with the disinfectant provided. “There are an increasing number of tracks throughout the Auckland and wider area, that have had to be closed because of Kauri dieback. It would be a tragedy if we had to stop folk from entering Eave’s Bush if kauri dieback was brought into our area.

I get quite excited when I hear about a New Zealander doing well on the world stage in athletics, or some educational attainment, or directing a really good movie, or in ground breaking medical or scientific research.

The list could go on and on – I am just someone who loves New Zealand and is proud of this little nation down at the bottom of the world.

However, I am not proud of our horrendous child abuse statistics that place us among the worst nations for this crime against our children. As a mother of four and grandmother of 11, I cannot imagine how someone can take out their frustration on their child, or whatever it is that causes them to punch and kick defenceless babies and children.

We read the sad stories and look at the heart wrenching photos of these victims of assault, neglect or maltreatment and know that every second day a child is admitted to a hospital somewhere in New Zealand because of their resulting injuries. Nearly half of these children are under the age of five and then we are told that these statistics are likely under reported because national guidelines mean officials have to be certain of an assault before it can be recorded as such.

How can this be in a nation that has seen increasing financial assistance over the years to help our families provide for their children? This includes breakfast clubs to ensure our children have breakfast in the morning.

I know I am treading on dangerous ground here but I am so tired of our PC approach to looking at these statistics. We need to truly understand that the health of our society rests on the strength and health of our families. You will know the old saying that is quite popular when we look at this problem that says ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. While not disagreeing with that statement, I think the primary statement should be, ‘it takes good parents who are, ideally, in a committed, stable relationship to raise well rounded, happy children’.

The statistics of where the most child abuse occurs tell us that, but in today’s society we do not speak of commitment much anymore. Commitment not to my rights, to my fulfilment, to my happiness, but to the relationship I am in, and to the children who are born as a result. I cannot say it strongly enough – loving, committed relationships are the seedbed for children who grow into strong, healthy and stable citizens of New Zealand.

I have personal experience in this. My husband died quite early in our marriage and I was left with four precious children under 10 years of age, the youngest only eight months old. I knew my children needed, above all, a stable home and providing for them was paramount and that shaped all of my decisions. I didn’t do everything right as life can be hard but shaping the lives of our children and grandchildren is a tremendous privilege. May we again realise that the shaping of our future nation is in the family home.

Brian Millard

World-renowned watercolourist features at Hospice show A lot has already been written about the work of artist Brian Millard who has established, over many decades, an international reputation as a leading watercolourist.

His work has featured in books and magazines and is a sell out at exhibitions here and overseas. He has received countless awards and in 1998 and 1999, his paintings were selected to represent NZ in the Asian Pacific Watercolour Exhibition in Taipei.

Brian moved to Matakatia five years ago where he paints at an easel set up in his garage. Large paintings adorn many walls in his home and more are stacked up ready for exhibition; his partner Marilyn Palmer is also an artist.

All Brian’s works begin life as an idea in a little sketchbook. He says composition is the most important thing in a successful painting and each work is developed not as an exact replica of a scene, but in a way that works visually to express a sense of place. As Brian has travelled and lived all over the world, the paintings are also a diary of places and people that mean something to him – taking the viewer on a journey from Vienna to Doubtful Sound, from rural England to The Remarkables, with scenes from Stanmore Bay, Wenderholm and Puhoi thrown in for good measure.

In a career that has also spanned writing, editing magazines and

owning an advertising agency, Brian is currently focused on painting and teaching.

He has never let his hearing disability, which began 50 years ago from an unknown cause, get in the way – his only regret is that it prevents him from listening to music.

Brian’s paintings will be a highlight of the upcoming Hibiscus Hospice Art Exhibition and Sale, which takes place at Estuary Arts Centre in Western Reserve, Orewa from June 2–5.

Around 400 works are up for sale or auction from more than 75 artists.

Alongside oils, acrylics, watercolours and pastels on paper, canvas and board, there will be works on oars, cork, perspex and steel. The exhibition will also feature ceramics, prints, photography, glassware and jewellery.

The event is in its 12th year and is run as a fundraiser by the hospice’s Women’s Committee.

It opens with a ticketed preview and auction on the evening of Thursday, June 1. Tickets to the preview are available from www.hibiscushospice. org.nz or by phoning 421 9180. Entry to the exhibition on other days will be by gold coin donation.

Feather in cap for club founder

Dave Sawyer of Dynamic Martial Arts in Silverdale has been selected as one of five world vice presidents of the World Kickboxing Association. He is also regional director for Oceania and Asia. Dave says the promotion (he was formerly NZ president of the association) gives his fighters access to bigger events in the United States and Europe. He is also helping to organise the world championships in Spain in October, and has more than a dozen of his fighters heading to that event.

Skaters assess revamped Stanmore park Stanmore Bay skatepark reopened recently after its $100,000 makeover.

The work, funded by the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board, included replacing the old wooden quarter pipe and box with a concrete structure.

The wooden ramp was old and required a lot of maintenance.

Skateboarders using the park are getting used to the new quarter pipe, which is lower than the old one, making it a bit harder for skaters to build up speed.

However, the skaters spoken to by Hibiscus Matters say the concrete ramp is definitely an improvement.

They also say more is needed; it would make a big difference to users if the rough concrete surface of the whole skatepark could be smoothed. That would make it better to skate on and also less gritty and

abrasive to land on.

Local board member Caitlin Watson, a skateboarder herself, says since it reopened, she has noticed that the park is getting good use from young people on skateboards and scooters – from Primary school age to teenagers.

“There are definitely a lot more older skaters using it,” she says.

Caitlin says she hasn’t tried out the facility herself as yet – she is currently on crutches after fracturing her ankle in three places.

“I came off my skateboard after getting “speed wobbles” in Millwater,” she says. She says she will take the skaters’ comments about the surface of the park back to the local board.
