The popularity of theme weddings has grown significantly in recent years. Although time-honored traditions remain popular, couples are opting to add more fun and excitement to personalize their happy event.
If you’re unsure what style is right for you, details like the date or location can serve as a guiding force. However, the best theme or style inspiration comes from your relationship and the interests you share and are passionate about. e experts at theknot.com o er the following wedding theme ideas:
A rustic wedding theme is all about connecting your celebration to nature. is concept can take many forms, from a farm-to-table garden dinner to a ceremony performed in a wild ower eld. Flowers are a big part of almost every type of wedding, but with a garden theme, owers are the moment. A garden wedding works especially well for spring nuptials, especially if you’ve chosen a pastel color palette. Garden wedding venues could include a private estate, botanical garden, vineyard, or a ballroom transformed by abundant blooms. Consider investing in elaborate bouquets, a blossoming ceremony arch and focal centerpieces on the reception tables. →
AtFenton Winery & Brewery, wedding planning is a collaborative journey led by Co-owner Ginny Sherrow and her dedicated team. “Our full-time coordinators become a steady source of knowledge and expertise for our couples throughout the average 18-month planning period,” Sherrow shares. “We cherish the long-term relationships we build – not only before the special day but afterward, as couples return to enjoy our Taproom and gardens.”
For many couples, the logistics of vendor coordination, setup and cleanup can feel overwhelming. FWB simplifies the process by offering an inclusive service. “When you book with us, vendor coordination is part of the package,” Sherrow explains. “Couples can choose from our preferred vendors or bring their own, and we hold everyone accountable to ensure a seamless experience.” The team also handles all setup and cleanup, except for personal décor and florals, allowing couples to personalize the space while leaving the heavy lifting to the professionals. This hands-on approach is inspired by FWB’s mission: “to be a part of your story.” Sherrow elaborates, “Fenton Winery & Brewery exists to provide a place for people to connect, celebrate and be together. Creating the best possible experience ensures people return and become part of our community.”
Over 12 years, FWB has hosted more than 800 weddings, perfecting a process that combines professionalism with a personal touch. Local antique shops typically o er a variety of trinkets from eras past that can provide inspiration for a vintage-themed wedding. To create the vibe, you’ll want to focus heavily on the Gilded Age and Victorian design. For starters, think candelabras, cloche jars, ligree photo frames and upholstered velvet furniture. Ideal venues could include a historic courthouse or hotel, garden or chapel.

A celestial wedding theme wedding will be a sparkle- lled collection of midnight blue and black, just like a star-speckled night sky. A planetarium, museum or lo could o er the perfect venue.
If you want a laid-back, chill day that is reminiscent of a beach vacation, hit the sand for
your nuptials. Beyond an actual beach, you can host a beachthemed wedding at a waterfront resort or lakeside golf course. Breezy linen fabrics, lighthouse motifs and blue watercolor stationery help to form this nautical, relaxed style. Treat guests to a seafood bar featuring local catches, lobster rolls or fresh shrimp cocktails. A waterfront view will really bring together this maritime-inspired theme.
Even if your wedding guests can’t jive like the “American Bandstand” dancers could back in the day, that’s what the vibe should feel like at a retro wedding. Pull retro theme ideas from the ‘50s and ‘60s, a time when bold colors like teal, cherry red, neon pink and canary yellow brought new energy to home decor and fashion. Include a few throwback details, like Coca Cola served in its signature glass bottles. Ideal venues include an art gallery, vintage theater, restored historic building or a diner.
If you want to depart from tradition and begin your marriage journey with a celebration that is uniquely you, opt for a theme wedding! For more ideas, visit theknot.com.
When a couple’s big day is on its way, there are many reasons to celebrate. While many take the traditional route, more than half of today’s couples are opting for much more inclusive versions of these celebrations, such as a “Couples Shower” or a “Wedding Shower” that allow all of your guests to mingle long before the nuptials commence.
An event like this takes the place of the classic “Bridal/Groom Shower”. These party types tend to divvy up loved ones who would like to see both of you on these special days, rather than having to choose whom to spend time with. They often gravitate toward more of an openhouse format, but that depends on how fancy you two want your celebration to be!
At The Laundry Room, you can go with an extravagant affair that includes a delicious sitdown meal and incorporates the formal opening of gifts and a fabulous craft cocktail bar. You can also opt for something more casual, such as an appetizer grazing table, outdoor games, and a signature punch beverage that you and your sweetie chose together. It’s important to have someone, like our Venue Coordinator, to walk you through the process of creating the event you are looking for, so that you are free to enjoy the day celebrating the most important thing: the love you share with the person you have chosen to spend your life with.
It is crucial to choose a venue that can provide everything that you and your partner would like to include; great food, amazing beverages and a comfortable atmosphere. Flexible spaces, like The Laundry Room, are a great option for couples who want to celebrate all of the moments that lead up to their special day, jointly, rather than apart. Because it really is better when you two are together!

What makes Vale Royal stand out? Farm which was located near the corner of Bennett Lake Rd. and Old US 23. And, a covered bridge on the park-like property is perfect for unforgettable photos.
The venue’s attention to detail extends to every aspect of the celebration. Tables, chairs and outdoor benches are included in the rental, while guests can enjoy lawn games, a petting farm or even ride a mechanical bull. As the evening winds down, bonfire pits beckon loved ones to gather under the stars. “We strive to make every moment magical,” Valerie shares.
Even inclement weather doesn’t dim the charm. “We have beautiful indoor options to ensure every wedding runs smoothly,” Valerie adds. One memorable event featured a groom arriving at the river dock in his bass fishing boat, showcasing the venue’s unique appeal.
With its rustic elegance, exceptional amenities and thoughtful design, Vale Royal Barn & Inn offers an extraordinary experience for couples looking to celebrate their love amidst breathtaking natural beauty.
Whether your wedding or engagement ring is brandnew or a family heirloom, a professional appraisal is essential to protect your investment. “Jewelry is often sentimental, and while you can’t replace the sentiment, an appraisal determines its value,” says Chip Beltinck, Owner of Sawyer Jewelers in Fenton. “This is crucial in cases of theft, mysterious loss, or even something as simple as losing a ring while swimming or washing your hands.”
A thorough appraisal includes detailed, itemized information. “It should cover the color, clarity, measurements and size of each stone, total weight, gold content, and includes detailed photos,” Beltinck explains. “For colored stones, quality and grading are important, too. Accurate documentation ensures you can recover the item’s value from your insurance company.”
It’s also important to choose a qualified appraiser. “Look for someone certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA),” says Beltinck. “GIA experts are globally recognized. At Sawyer Jewelers, we’re proud to have two Grad-
uate Gemologists (GGs) on staff.”
Beltinck warns against vague or inflated appraisals. “A vague appraisal can make replacing an item nearly impossible. Overvaluing jewelry may increase your insurance premiums unnecessarily,” he notes.
Appraisals tie directly into insurance coverage. “Be proactive,” advises Beltinck. “Appraisals should be updated every three to five years, depending on the item’s value. Confirm with your insurance company whether replacement costs include reproducing custom pieces. At Sawyer Jewelers, we factor in unseen costs like labor, custom work and CAD design.”
Beltinck shares a memorable story: “A customer lost a vintage heirloom ring passed down from her mother. Thanks to her detailed appraisal, including photos and CAD design, we created a nearly identical replica. While the sentimental value couldn’t be replaced, she was thrilled to have the appearance of what she lost.”
A professional appraisal not only protects your jewelry’s value but also ensures peace of mind should the unexpected happen.

Voted the 2024 City’s Choice for Favorite Bridal Shop, Expressions in Silk has been helping brides-to-be find “THE dress” for their big day for over four decades.
Shop owner Patti Ruhala and her expert team believe shopping for your wedding gown should be an exciting, stress-free experience. She graciously shared valuable tips for making this important decision.
Plan to shop 9-12 months before your wedding. “While many gowns are available for immediate purchase, extra time ensures that any design changes or size orders can be completed without stress,” Patti notes. Some designers also offer quicker delivery options if needed.
“Every bride is unique, and finding a gown that flatters your body type starts with trying on the four main styles: ballgown, fit-andflare, sheath and A-line,” Patti states. “You can’t always tell how a dress will look based on photos of size-four models.” Once you determine your favorite silhouette, focus on details like lace, beading, shimmer or fabric types. The wedding venue also plays a role; an outdoor setting might inspire a fairytale gown, while an elegant indoor venue may call for a more formal look.
Since gowns are designed with standard measurements, tailoring ensures the dress hugs your body in all the right places. Typical alterations include hemming for height, adjusting for your bust, waist or hips, and adding a bustle. Some designers offer custom measurements, but additional adjustments may still be necessary.
“This season, brides are loving both simple, unembellished gowns and those with intricate beading or shimmer. Light, airy fabrics and styles featuring sleeves or modest designs are also trending,” Patti says.
With over 40 years of bridal expertise, the team is passionate about creating a fun, personalized shopping experience. Their collection features one-of-a-kind gowns, ensuring your dress is truly special. “On-site seamstresses, experienced stylists and even a florist and officiant on staff make this a one-stop shop,” Patti adds. As one happy customer, Jenny Armstrong, put it: “The ladies here made me feel so special and went above and beyond to make my wedding look a dream come true! If you want the PERFECT dress and the best service you’ve ever had, go to Expressions in Silk Bridal!”

Tracy’s Creations not only alters clothing for special occasions, but is frequently asked for custom garment reconstruction, too. “I love the creative challenge of modifying previously worn pieces to make beautiful new creations!” smiles Tracy Ellis-Nuttle, Owner/Seamstress with 40+ years of experience. “Designs circle around borrowing elements and features between the generations. It’s exciting to see styles reemerge and become fresh again!” she shares. “All things Bridal and Beautiful really inspire me!”
In 2024, Tracy converted several mother’s vintage gowns into wearable art for today. Imagine mother’s 1990ish white satin with heavily-beaded trim turned into daughter’s wedding day dressing robe. Or, reshaped into a shower, rehearsal or reception dress. Or, transformed into a receiving blanket or baptism gown and bonnet to welcome a new grandchild. “These clever and gorgeous recreations are unique heirlooms that keep family traditions flowing into the future,” Tracy adds. Perhaps you are considering doing something with your mother’s vintage gown. Custom work often requires greater artistic creative time, so Tracy only works on these projects in the slower, winter months. As Tracy is a one-woman production team, she asks that brides call months in advance to be placed on her waiting list. “There are only so many hours in the schedule to see clients, sew and prepare for fittings – I really need an assistant!”
Tracy’s Creations offers specialty alterations, suit-tailoring for grooms, and is also a dealer for The Wedding Gown Preservation Company. “Getting your wedding gown cleaned and properly preserved this year means your daughter may choose to do something creative with it to make a tradition of her own!”

tarting a life together is an exciting journey; however, financial problems create major stressors and are one of the leading contributors of divorce. To ensure a stable and prosperous future, it’s essential to manage your finances wisely. Here are some practical steps and strategies for financial planning and investment for newlyweds:
Both before and a er you are married, have a conversation about your individual and shared nancial goals. ese include short-term goals like a honeymoon or buying a car, and longterm goals like purchasing a home or saving for retirement.
Financial Histories: Transparency is key to building trust and understanding. Share your credit scores, debts, assets and income.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE: what bills are each of you going to pay separately and which will be paid together?
Joint Budget: is incorporates both incomes and expenses and will help you e ciently manage household nances.
Track Expenses: ere are budgeting apps and spreadsheets to make this process easier.
Credit: Keep a credit card only for emergencies – car repair, roof or major home repair. It is not “I want a new hunting ri e” or “I need a new out t for the party.”
Save for Emergencies: Set aside a portion of your income to cover unexpected costs like medical or job loss. Aim for 3-6 months’ worth of living expenses and make sure that this money is separate from your monthly budget. It should be held in a safe interest-bearing account, not a checking or basic savings account.
Most investment rms and credit unions have money markets that pay well above the basic accounts.
Debt Repayment Plan: Create a plan to pay o any existing debts, prioritizing high-interest debts like credit cards to save on interest payments.
Avoid New Debt: Be cautious about taking on new debt – if necessary, ensure it’s manageable within your budget.
Start Early: e sooner you start investing, the more time your money has to grow. Consider opening a joint investment account or individual Roth retirement accounts (IRAs).
Consult an Expert: If you’re unsure where to start, consult a financial advisor. Be careful not to use a mutual fund, or an annuity or insurance salesperson as a financial advisor. Banks are for banking, insurance companies protect your home and car.
A qualified investment manager who is a trusted advisor can make a significant impact in your future together.
Life Insurance: Consider purchasing a policy to protect each other nancially in case of an unexpected event. Do not over-insure; in many cases, a term policy is a ordable and will provide the protection you need.
Health Insurance: Ensure you have adequate healthcare coverage. Compare plans to nd the best option for your needs and budget.
If you’re planning to buy a home, start saving for a down payment. This will reduce the amount you need to borrow and lower your monthly mortgage payments.
Vehicle Purchase: To minimize debt, save for a substantial down payment or consider buying
Remember: communication and teamwork are crucial to successful nancial planning and investment.
a reliable used car. e operative word is NEED. Many people buy a new car because they “want” it. It will make you feel really good … for about two months – it could become a burden if you have to pay for it for ve, six or even seven years.
Retirement Accounts: I can’t emphasize how important this is! Contribute to retirement accounts like 401(k)s or IRAs. Take advantage of employer-matching contributions or the Roth option if they are available.
Long-Term Planning: Discuss your retirement goals and develop a plan to achieve them. e earlier you start, the more secure your retirement will be. When it comes to selecting the investments, seek assistance.
Monthly Reviews: Schedule time with each other to review your budget, expenses and investments. is will help you stay on track and make necessary adjustments.
Annual Reviews: Conduct a comprehensive annual review of your nancial situation when you assess your progress toward your goals and update your plans as needed.
Financial Literacy: Read books, attend workshops, or take online courses to enhance your nancial knowledge. By implementing these strategies, newlyweds can build a strong financial foundation and set themselves up for a prosperous future.

Last month, I discussed the Median Voter eorem and how voter concerns with the economy pointed to a Trump win. is presented a puzzle, as economic indicators leading up to the election were strong. Economic growth was a healthy 3%, the unemployment rate was below 4% and in ation was 2.4%, which was above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target but falling. Why did the economy dominate voters’ concerns, which spelled trouble for the incumbent Democratic Party?
e answer is: in ation. Consider the “Rule of 70,” which says that 70 divided by the rate of in ation is approximately how long it takes for prices in the economy to double. Under 2% in ation, which is what in ation averaged prior to COVID, prices doubled every 35 years. is is not great, but if it is widely anticipated and wages keep up (which
they were), not terrible. Under 10% in ation, which is approximately what in ation peaked at in the spring of 2022, prices double every seven years. Another way to see this: under 2% in ation, $1 today will have $0.61 of purchasing power in 25 years. Under 10% in ation, $1 today will have $0.61 of purchasing power in just ve years. us, 10% in ation packs 25 years of 2% in ation into a ve-year window.
In ation is de ned as the average increase in prices in the economy. Some prices rise more rapidly than average, some less than average. In general, consumer prices are 23% higher now compared to pre-COVID. However, housing prices are 53% higher, rent and grocery prices are 27% higher, gasoline prices are 24% higher, utility prices are 30% higher, new car prices are 22% higher, and used car prices are 25% higher.
Suppose the burst of in ation we experienced did not occur and prices remained on their pre-COVID trend. In general, consumer prices would be 10% higher, housing prices would be 23% higher, rent would be 16% higher, groceries 10% higher, and utility prices 5% higher.
e price of gasoline would be unchanged, as the price of gasoline was at in the 2010s due to new sources of crude oil being accessible by fracking. e price of used cars would be 2% lower, as used car prices were falling pre-pandemic.
Milton Friedman said that in ation is “taxation without representation” as no voter voted for these higher prices. In ation
is imposed on voters through irresponsible scal and monetary policy. Worse, in ation is a regressive tax, as lower income voters are less able to pay these higher prices. If you are upper-income, you get annoyed at these higher prices but just pay them. If you are lower-income, higher prices, especially those for necessities such as housing and utilities, might cause you to miss meals.
e typical voter is a 50-something working class voter and this voter got hammered by in ation. It is a near certainty that whenever there is a burst of in ation, voters will toss the incumbent party out of o ce.

Ifyou are a statistics person, love and marriage go together about like divorce and marriage do. Around half of all marriages in this country end in divorce. Not very romantic, is it?
According to the National Institutes of Health, the leading causes of divorce in the U.S. are lack of commitment, adultery, too much arguing, marrying too young, nancial issues and substance use.
I have been through divorce. As for what caused my rst marriage to end, marrying too young is the best explanation. Chronologically, we were not that young. How about we take that further and call it emotional immaturity? You really don’t have to be a certain age to be emotionally immature, which I was. Not blaming the ex. at was on me.
When my rst husband proposed marriage, I was 25 and very fearful of becoming an old maid. (Can you even use that expression anymore?) Regardless, that is where my head was. I remember my father asking me why I wanted to get married, and I had no answer; but I thought to myself, “Because he asked me.” I did not
realize it 30-plus years ago, but my dad had asked the most important question there is when it comes to marriage: Why?
Why even get married, especially when half of marriages end in divorce? I guess a lot of people are not really thinking about that, because the marriage rate per 1,000 women ranges between 16 to 18. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, those numbers have remained stagnant for decades.
Before you call me a cynic, you should know that I have been married – this time – for almost 17 years. We are happy, and that is because we asked ourselves and each other a lot of questions before we walked down the aisle (well, beach, actually.) We asked if we were ready to commit, if we regarded one another as best friends, if we were honest in this relationship, if we agreed about nances – and so many other important questions. Is it perfect?
Of course not. I don’t know of any perfect marriages, but I know of plenty that are happy.
Despite our seemingly Spocklike thought process about it, my
husband and I enjoy a romantic marriage. We are more like besties, however, than anything else. I can’t really tell you exactly why our marriage works; I am not expert on love. I could tell you a lot more about what not to do in any relationship, than I could o er advice about how to succeed at marriage.
I will say there is some great news about marriage. e Census Bureau reports that between 2008 and 2022, the divorce rate per 1,000 women fell from ten to seven. Maybe that means we are starting to put more thought
into this life-changing decision. It could be that we, as a society, stress relationship-building much more than they did when my parents got married. ey made it 50 years before my mother passed. Marriage is about far more than a ection. It is dedication and the kind of love that will get you through the best and worst of times together as a team. In this month dedicated to all things romance, I say follow your heart; but if you are considering marriage, make sure your brain is a huge part of the process.

Areyou ready for one of the most exciting sporting events of the year? is year, Super Bowl LIX will take place on February 9 in one of my favorite cities: New Orleans. And while it is not known at the time of this writing what teams will play for the coveted Lombardi Trophy, it is always exciting to watch the best of the best do battle. is year, ticket prices for Super Bowl 2025 are expected to start at $7,450 per seat, so most of us will be watching the game at home with a group of friends and family, at a Super Bowl party or favorite sports bar. e half-time entertainment will feature hip-hop rapper Kendrick Lamar. Louisiana native and ve-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Jon Batiste will perform the National Anthem.
Of course, what I like best about game-day watch parties is the food. And the most popular menu items (no surprise) are pizza, wings, and chips & dip. According to restaurantware. com, pizza makes up for
en wing sales.
On Super Bowl Sunday, 11.2 million pounds of potato chips and 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips are purchased. Also not surprising, football fans will drink about 325.5 million gallons of beer, equating to 50 million cases. But not everyone drinks beer during the big game –$2.37 million worth of soda is also consumed.
One of my favorite foods to serve on Super Bowl Sunday is a steaming pot of chili with all of the xings (sour cream, cheese, green onion and Fritos). My family also enjoys my Bu alo Chicken dip, which I serve with tortilla chips and celery. And of course, homemade guacamole is another favorite. Tater Tot Casserole (topped with cheese, bacon, green onion and sour cream), pigs in a blanket, nachos, submarine sandwiches are other yummy options to serve while watching the big game.
Of course, we have to have some delicious desserts to ensure a sweet ending on Super Bowl Sunday. Topping the list of favorites are cookies! If you’re too busy to bake, just pick up a tray of your assorted favorites at the local market or bakery. My family loves homemade chocolate chip, peanut butter and oatmeal raisin. If you make your own cookies, you will surely be the MVP of the day! Homemade brownies are another favorite game-day treat.
is cherished American tradition is always a super-special opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. And there is nothing more exciting than donning your spirit wear and cheering your team on, especially when they score that winning touchdown!

During the nal days of 2024, a good friend and I were chatting about our concerns regarding the upcoming year and its many unknowns. She very wisely stated, “ ere is nothing we can do except take care of ourselves, and always be kind and generous to those who need it.” I wholeheartedly agreed.
Generosity means di erent things to di erent people. Some view generosity as freely sharing their time and talents to make life better for others. en, there are those who think generosity means giving money to the less fortunate.
Both are not wrong, but it depends on a person’s means and what they have to o er.
People are fascinated with multi-mil-
lionaires and billionaires, which is one reason many spend more than what they have to spare on a chance to win one of the huge lottery jackpots. e odds of winning are astronomical, but it is o en said, “You gotta play to win.” e thing is, someone always wins.
I’ll admit that when the two big games’ jackpots start approaching a billion dollars, I spend $6 on three tickets. I’m not sure exactly what I would do if I actually won. I like to dream big. Most people say they might quit their job, buy a new house, pay o all bills and secure their kids’ futures, give to charity and do more traveling.
I would probably do most of those things, too, but have another idea. From 2008 to 2013, there was a show on TV called “Secret Millionaire.” I loved that show! It was about millionaires, usually a married couple, who would move to a disadvantaged community. ey acquired low-income housing and secured menial, minimum wage jobs. ey made friends easily and vol-
unteered at several local events. In doing this, they learned what the most pressing needs were in that community.
At the end, the couple revealed their identities during a public gathering at which they doled out several sums of money for speci c needs. ey weren’t massive sums, but very generous. For example, $100,000 went to the local re department for a much-needed new re truck. Or $20,000 to the local high school to purchase band instruments and uniforms. And $50,000 was given to the owners of a local diner who had fallen on hard times, to help them keep the business a oat. Other examples included paying for a child’s braces, and more. ose are just a few examples. Everyone cried! If I were younger, I would love to have the means to do this – travel, make new friends and share the wealth with those who deserve and need it the most. What could be more rewarding? But since I’m not a multi-millionnaire and probably never will be, I’ll just stick with being as kind as possible and sharing the gi s I do have with others.
