COLOUR FORECAST: Get bold and beautiful

by Candace M. Fox for SP Creative Features

Fall has officially arrived, and our fun-filled summer wardrobes are getting packed away. For much of the fashion world, the Fall/Winter 20132014 collections have already hit the runways, the most recent being the much talked about New York Fashion Week (Sept. 5 - 12). What can we expect on the colour front when venturing to our favourite shopping locale? Well... A LOT of colour! Pantone.com has listed their top 10 colours of Fall/Winter 2013, including various shades of greens (especially Emerald), blues, purples, reds, oranges and an appearance by Carafe Brown. The fashion forecast is full of bold colours, all on their own or mixed in different printed fabrics with a few light accent tones. It is safe to say this year will be a departure from the monotone shades of grey, black and brown. Looking at the collections for Fall/Winter 2013, it seems fashion designers are all following suit, as bright bold fabrics hit the runway in a kaleidoscope of colourful shows from London to Toronto Fashion Week. Shoes, bags and accessories are no exception this season when getting smothered in bold colours. Various prints and designs in an array of colours with embellishments are all the rage right now for both shoes and bags. With velvet, suede and fur making a strong (and colourful) statement - the show stealer this season could easily be found on your feet or shoulder. The same can be said about accessories. Yellow

gold is in and can be found paired with bright stones and gems, making for a sophisticated yet eye-catching display. For the young, or the young at heart, bright beaded accessories and chunky charm bracelets are definitely a big hit. My recommendations this season are simple, chance the bold colours and ditch the black-onblack-on-grey this fall. Take a cue from the Fall/ Winter runway shows of Diane Von Furstenberg, Kate Spade, Victoria Beckham, Michael Kors and Versace: mix bold prints or colour blocking while still incorporating the darker colour pieces you already have in your closet. Translating this off the runway and into everyday wearable fashion, our favourite retailers will surely be carrying a bright array of blouses, skirts, pants and sweaters for this fall. The best thing about these bold colours, they can easily be paired with a muted black or dark grey. Still not sold? Opt for the trend on a lesser scale with shoes and accessories or a great bag. The colour trend will still make a statement and you can be guaranteed to garner a few compliments on your bright and bold shoes, trendy bag or beautiful accessory piece. Either way, find a few bold hues that suit your colour palette be it Samba Red, Mykonos Blue or Vivacious Magenta; wear it with confidence and let the good fashion roll this fall. Argyle Boutique welcomes Dean Renwick collection

by Jeannie Armstrong SP Creative Features Editor

Nicole Bolen knows how busy women are these days. She opened Argyle Boutique, located in the University Heights Shopping Centre on McOrmand Drive, with the goal of helping women make their lives simply more beautiful. “At Argyle Boutique, we are all about taking busy women through their day, from the office onto the rest of their day, without too many changes. We also feel that women should dress for who they deserve to be - not putting themselves last, but wearing comfortable, good quality clothing,” says Bolen. To achieve those goals, Argyle Boutique offers an outstanding mix of dress, career and casual fashions, including diverse brands like Anonyme, Mexx, Conrad C, Spanner, Miracle Body and Body Bag by Jude. The fall season brings an exciting new addition to Argyle Boutique. “We are pleased to announce our new partnership with the amazing Saskatchewan designer Dean Renwick, from Regina. We’ll be representing his new retail line exclusively in Saskatoon,” says Bolen. Bolen first discovered Dean Renwick’s collection at the Mercedes-Benz Runway Show at the Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival. “I was blown away by Dean Renwick’s fashions. I literally just Facebooked him and we started talking,” says Bolen. “I’m so excited to feature a Saskatchewan designer of Dean Renwick’s stature in our boutique. It’s amazing for Saskatoon and I think there are lots of women in our city who appreciate fashion enough to wear his designs.” The boutique owner and the designer share a similar fashion philosophy. Dean Renwick describes his new fall retail collection as a “line geared towards a contemporary woman who can wear these pieces from daytime to evening with a quick change of accessories.” Renwick adds, “the collection entails a streamlined silhouette with colour blocking and a modern fit. The colours are camel, red, deep blue and ivory - which scream luxury!” Bolen is excited about this season’s classic pairing of black and white, citing as an example the Dean Renwick large format houndstooth dress featured on the cover of StarPhoenix Fashion Week. “We all have black and white in our closet. We can buy one or two incredible new pieces and build on what’s already in our wardrobes.” Bolen is thrilled by the response Argyle Boutique has received since opening the doors for business last November. “It’s not only women in the neighbourhood, but women from across the city who are making Argyle Boutique their fashion destination,” says Bolen. “I am also appreciative of the suppport and mentoring extended to me by so many women in the industry in Saskatoon. Their generosity is amazing.” The most rewarding aspect of Argyle’s first year in business is the opportunity to open women’s eyes to how beautiful they truly are, unlocking negative self-images, says Bolen. “Women can be so hard on themselves about their bodies. It’s so thrilling to see their reaction in the dressing room when I bring them something new to try on that is flattering to their body shape. It’s amazing how they can see themselves very differently and very beautifully.”

A season of sophistication by Jeannie Armstrong SP Creative Features Editor Kajoo Kamal, owner of Klassique Designs in Scotia Centre, describes Fall/Winter 2013-2014 as a season of sophistication, “with sleeker silhouettes, a more tailored look. The jackets and suitings are more constructed. Slender pencil skirts and trouser pants are contributing to the season’s more tailored feel. The end look is very flattering and timeless,” says Kamal. Kamal has introduced an exclusive line of suiting to Klassique, fashioned from specially selected wool/silk blend fabrics from Italy. “The hand to it is so luxurious. I have one grouping in particular that has a subtle metallic sheen to it; the texture is so light and interesting,” says Kamal. “I’ve also brought in a few new collections from Europe like Ireland’s Kate Cooper that feature sophisticated dresses topped by matching top coats or walking coats. It’s a gorgeous look.” Investing in fashions that are properly constructed from quality fabrics is the best way to build your wardrobe, says Kamal. “I’m excited for a younger audience to experience these finely tailored fashions for the first time and to see the dramatic difference they make in how you look and feel.” Saskatoon’s social calendar features more red carpet and VIP events than ever before. Kamal says each season, the demand increases for sensational cocktail and evening dresses. “This season is truly glamourous, with lots of beading and sparkle. While the little black dress will always be in style, we’re also seeing fabulous champagne, nude and blushtoned gowns. The shimmery fabrics look great whether you’re blonde, dark or a red-head.” Another stylish new option for an evening on the town is the dinner suit, comprising a beautifully fitted jacket and slim pencil skirt. “It’s a great choice for evenings when you don’t want to have bare shoulders, yet still want to look sensational. It’s the perfect choice for executive women who are attending professional functions,” says Kamal.

Denim reshaping the nation by Hilary Klassen of SP Creative Features Today’s denim is reshaping us, literally – and we’re talking derriere’s here. Smaller looking, shapelier butts are on the horizon. The new denim is pushing aside the old boxy, weighty, non-stretch denim once and for all. Denim is beginning to invade the comfort market, bringing shapewear into the light of day. Take the skinny black denim jegging on offer at The Sandbox in the City, located at the corner of Broadway and Ninth. This MAVI Alissa jean is high-rise, pulling in all the random parts that like to slide out of a low-rise jean. No longer just a wardrobe staple, denim has taken on this new role of shapewear. “The fabrics that manufacturers are using now, the elastane and lycra blends, are giving the body more shape,” says Juanita Schindel, co-owner of the Sandbox. Finding 100 per cent cotton jeans is becoming more of a rarity. The fabrics in these jeans have four- or five-way stretch in them. “They’re not losing their shape and they’re more fitted, so they’re holding you in,” says Schindel. “They’re more of a shaping pant.” People are wearing these fashion pants to the office, not just on the weekend. The low rise is fading somewhat in popularity because it tends to create the “muffin top” which she says needs be camouflaged with a looser fitting top. The trend is to mid-rise or high-rise pants. The black denim jegging can double as a dress pant. “If you wear it properly with the right top, the right boot, the right shoe, it actually gives shape to the body,” says Schindel. These jeans also give shape to the leg. “A lot of them come in now at the knee, they’re nice and snug.” They transform the leg, making it look longer. Shapewear denim is flattering for different figure types. Not surprisingly, very slender people can basically wear anything. Shorter women can wear skinnys even though they may not

COZY COMFORT

Sandbox in the City offers up a warm and cozy ensemble modelled by Chelsea O’Leary. If you’re looking for a great sweater for the office, check out Chelsea’s Kenneth Cole fitted wrap sweater – modern, comfortable and still stylish with zipper detailing. The Smash tunic underneath has a muted filigree pattern with asymmetrical details and cap sleeves. Great over a pair of tights or leggins. Chelsea pairs it with a super stretch skinny leggings from Mavi – the best shape of pant for tunics – making the body look lean and long. The pants are tucked into a pair of Elizab boots from Very Volatile L.A. Find it all at the Sandbox in the City at 1002B Broadway Avenue.

A team of stylists from Angles SalonSpa in Midtown Plaza is jetting off to Paris, France, the result of nine months of intensive training and preparation for the 2013 Total Beauty makeover competition presented by La Biosthetique Paris, a world leader in cosmetic and salon products. Tammy McLean, founder and director of Angles SalonSpa, says her salon was invited to represent Canada at the international event in Paris after achieving two top ten wins – including one first place finish - at the national competition, based in Calgary. “Each of our stylists competed. We trained for nine months in preparation for the event. We began by creating our concepts, working on inspiration and beauty boards, followed by model selection and months of styling, practising – even prepping on mannequin heads. In June, we had our big photo shoot. It was a three day event. We created our ‘before’ and ‘afters’ and we were able to achieve two top ten winners,” says McLean. The total beauty concept created by Angles’ stylist Michael Boucher won first place at the nationals. “Michael started with me as an apprentice. Since he joined Angles SalonSpa three years ago, we’ve developed his skills and advanced his training. This award is definitely a highlight of his career to date,” says McLean.

This dynamic total beauty makeover created by Michael Boucher of Angles SalonSpa in Midtown Plaza won first place in the national Total Beauty Awards presented by La Biosthetique Paris. The Angles SalonSpa team is now in Paris competing at the international Total Beauty events, against top beauty professionals from around the world.

think so. “Balance it out with a chunkier boot and a bit longer top,” says Schindel. Generally people who are 5’2” or shorter should not be wearing a wide bottom pant. It just makes you look short and shapeless, unless you wear a very high heel with it. “A very narrow straight, or a skinny is the best thing for a shorter person; no boot cuts,” she says. Fuller figures can definitely do a boot cut but it should come in at the knee and you need to be about 5’3” to 5’4” and taller. “Balance that out by wearing tops right to mid-hip or to midthigh, otherwise you will just have no shape,” says Schindel. The flare bottom will balance out the hip. “Fuller figures also look good in a trouser style if you’re taller,” she adds. The new trouser pants are more fitted and have some shapewear attributes built in. Baby boot cuts that come in at the knee and come out just a little bit at the bottom are pretty good for most figures. The MAVI Alissa and Alexa are the best-selling jeans at the Sandbox, “It’s because of the feel, the stretch, and you can wear them with everything, so they’re fantastic,” says Schindel. Not Your Daughter’s Jeans (NYDJ) are appealing not just to older women who want that higher rise, but increasingly to 30-40 year olds who want a clean look from a nice tailored pant. The washes are being updated as well. The Fidelity jean is a premium denim and one of Schindel’s personal favourites. It has a higher rise and clean pockets. “A lot of women who are a bit rounder in the midriff have very thin legs. This is the perfect jean for them,” she says. The Sandbox also has the Yoga Jean. “It has a blend so comfortable you can wear them to do yoga,” says Schindel. Boosting customers’ self-esteem by helping them find their best look is gratifying to Schindel and co-owner Colleen Tait. “Making women feel better is easy to do with clothes,” says Schindel.

Competition at the national awards was tough, as the event attracted hundreds of applicants. In Paris, they’ll face off against the world’s top beauty professionals, competing against award winners from as far away as Australia, Russia, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. “For our stylists to be competing at this international level is quite a feather in our cap,” says McLean. The Total Beauty competition invites stylists to express their creativity and imagination. In preparation, McLean encouraged her own team of stylists to think big. “Our stylists pulled inspiration from everywhere: nature, architecture and design, fabrics, foods, landscaping. I really encouraged them to look around and see what inspires them, and build off that. We started by creating inspiration boards with all of our favourite looks, colours and textures. From there, we designed our total looks. The entries are judged on hair, makeup, clothing, suitability, and the impact of the before and after photos. It has to be a trend-setting look, a style that’s fashion-forward, moving into the future.” As a business leader, McLean makes professional development and continuing education for her staff a top priority. “I start with younger stylists and help them to develop their skills, their reputations and the standards of excellence that we adhere to at Angles SalonSpa,” says McLean. The opportunity to train for international competitions, as well as ongoing education, also enhances the salon experience for her clients. “Because we invest so much into the education of our stylists and estheticians, our clients can feel confident they are receiving the very first-to-market salon and spa services, whether it’s colour artistry, cutting and styling techniques, a new skin care or body treatment. Angles SalonSpa is a trend leader in hair, skin and makeup.” While in Paris, the Angles team will tour several of the city’s leading fashion houses, taking in the latest style trends. “It’s a whirlwind four days and so inspiring!” says McLean. Before departing for Paris, McLean was in Vancouver, as part of the La Biosthetique Canadian Artistic Team, participating in the company’s Fall/Winter 2013-2014 Trend Launch. Hundreds of beauty professionals were in the audience, as McLean and other members of the artistic team revealed the latest looks for this season. McLean’s experience as a platform artist and Canadian trainer with La Biosthetique is something that the clients of Angles SalonSpa appreciate. “I’m right here for our customers, making sure that they’re having the very best experience at a higher level.” Saskatonians don’t have to fly to Paris to enjoy their own total beauty makeover. The total beauty experience awaits at Angles SalonSpa in Midtown Plaza. “We are a one-stop shop, which our busy clients appreciate. You can stop in and get everything done at once – from hair care to skin care, nails, waxing, laser treatments and all of your professional products,” says McLean.

Saskatoon teen brings home the crown

FASHION ON WEEK

F8

by Hilary Klassen of SP Creative Features It might not be surprising that a girl who wore false eye lashes for performing in musical theatre when she was ten, would win Miss Teen Canada World this summer in Toronto. But Jillian Martin was surprised. The Saskatoon native started dance lessons at seven, was part of the Expressions performance group, went into cheerleading in Grade Nine, and started modeling at age 16. She’d been in the public eye a good bit. Martin has trouble remembering the moment when she won the crown. “It was a whirlwind. I had to watch the video to remember what I was thinking. All that was going through my mind was, ‘I did it, I did it’!” says Martin. “It was incredible to get crowned in front of all of my friends. It was such an honour. I went through all sorts of different emotions over the course of the night, but I definitely felt very blessed by the end of it.” Martin also won Miss Teen Photogenic at the July pageant in Toronto. While this was quite an honour, Martin had done some research on past winners of this award. “I looked back at previous years and I made the assumption that all the girls that were Miss Teen Photogenic didn’t make it any farther than top 20. And so the panic kind of set in when I got Top Photogenic. “I’m done, I’m done, I’m not making it any further, I’m done,” she laughs. She did make it further, which meant she could skip the meltdown she felt coming. She felt encouraged to go for Miss Teen Canada World after a chat with Savanagh Walker who won second runner up in 2012. “It sounded like fun. I looked into it more and found out that the winner of Miss Teen Canada gets a “Me to We” trip which is through Free the Children, to volunteer and build schools overseas. That was something I’d been looking at since I was about 14.” This was the clincher that made her want to try for the crown. Coming up, Martin will participate in We Day in Saskatchewan, possibly as a speaker. There was talk of doing something at the Vancouver We Day. She will also be part of the Miss Universe Pageant in Russia in November. The “Me to We” trip will take place sometime in the next year. “I’ll be heading to the New Brunswick and the Newfoundland pageants in the New Year,” she says. “I’m very excited for those because I’ve never been

that far east and I have friends out there. I love to travel!” Participating in the pageant will potentially open more doors for Martin. “One of the judges has his own modeling agency in Toronto and he seemed very interested in me. The choreographer of the entire show has 20 years’ experience in the entertainment industry and he wants to help me out,” she says. Martin would like to see how far her modeling career can take her. But she has what she calls “pipe dreams” and “reality dreams.” If modeling doesn’t seem right for her she might try acting. “I’d love to get into acting. It’s been a pipe dream of mine for a long time,” she says. “I never thought it was even a possibility but I’ve learned over the past couple of weeks that I have a lot of people believing in me that I have the potential to do it, so that’s very exciting to me.” She’s looking at an academy in Los Angeles for next fall as a possibility. One of her prizes was a month-long course at the Toronto Academy of Acting which she may take advantage of in the next year. The “reality dream” and her back-up plan is sports medicine. “I’d love to get into sports medicine, sports therapy and work with a sports team of some sort,” says Martin. Martin says SHE modeling helped her prepare for the pageant. “It really helped me learn how to be professional, how to present myself well, to walk and command attention, that sort of thing. It really boosted my confidence,” she says. Although she doesn’t know all that the next year might hold, she says, “I’ll take on everything that’s given to me. I’ve learned very much just to be thankful for what is put in front of me and if it’s meant to be it will be.” The values she expressed at the pageant will no doubt guide her in the next months: “Staying true to myself and my own morals and values, human dignity and self-respect, were part of my platform going into Miss Teen Canada.” During the whirlwind of the pageant, she told herself, “stay grounded and don’t get too overwhelmed, trust yourself that it’s all going to be okay and you’re still going to survive until tomorrow.” Exactly.

Casual comfort always in style by Tom Eremondi for SP Creative Features Karma leads to comfort and style at Serenity Apparel, says boutique owner Diane Ehrhardt. “Karma is a purely Canadian line we’ve had in the store since last fall,” Ehrhardt says about the clothes featured in this fashion section. “It’s an athletic line that doesn’t necessarily look athletic. It’s a lifestyle line that’s dressy, edgier and features some exciting touches like stretch lace and rouching. They’re really functional but also fun.” At Serenity Apparel you can find Karma pieces such as reversible capris, leg warmers, tanks, wraps and jackets. “The jackets are comfortable to work out in but they’re also dressy,” Ehrhardt reports. “You can just throw them over your workout clothes and wear them shopping or when you’re doing errands. The wraps are versatile and can be worn several different ways. They’re made of two fabrics – bamboo and nylon-spandex – and have dolman sleeves that are wide at the armhole and narrow at the wrists. They’re slim and elegant.” Karma colours seen this fall include emerald and kelly greens, blue-green prints, and berries – a lovely dark

raspberry colour. “We’re also bringing in some lighter colours like cantaloupe and lighter green that will be great accents to these main colours. Throughout the fall, we’ll keep adding pieces to the Karma line.” Leg warmers are one of the hottest items this fall, Ehrhardt says. “You’ll see people working out in capris and then just pulling leg warmers over their legs. They’re not the old-style knit pieces – they’re now made of lightweight fabric like bamboo so they’re sleek and more functional.” Another newer line at Serenity Apparel is Moving Comfort, she adds. “Moving Comfort sees some neat textures – for example, they have super light fabrics for their tops so they don’t cling to your body. Women don’t want pieces that are tight.” Moving Comfort offers great features like unique straps and bubble hems. Tops, pants and leggings can be found in fun prints and colours such as orange, magenta, limes, Kelly greens, and blues. She notes Serenity is still home to great lines like LeoStar Athletica and girls wear from Yogini or Limeapple. It’s also the exclusive Saskatoon dealer for WYNK Wear. “WYNK Wear is line of clothing owned by a local manufacturer but made in Vietnam in a socially conscious factory. We’re proud to carry it here.” Ehrhardt says that women are looking for the perfect combination of style and comfort. “It’s more than just clothes for working out. Women wants clothes that look fantastic and can be worn almost anywhere. “The lines you see here are because I try to offer clothes that are a little different than what others may have. I like style but always make sure the clothes are high quality. You don’t want to buy something and then have it fade, pill or stretch after just a couple of wears or washes.” Ehrhardt says she works to ensure this by staying connected with other retailers. “I have a network of related businesses like mine and go to their forums to see what customers are saying about their stock. I find the opinions these people have to be really valuable because they’re unsolicited.” She adds that Serenity Apparel’s customer appreciation sale runs Oct. 4 to 6. The shop in The Centre is open seven days a week. For more information, visit Serenity-Apparel.com or search for Serenity Apparel on Facebook.

Fresh looks, fresh brands at Midtown Plaza by Candace M. Fox for SP Creative Features

LEATHER & LACE Midtown Plaza takes fashion forward in a lovely layered look for Britni-Lee Michel, with Masala Models. The mixture of leather and lace provides an appealing visual, while the contrast of textures creates an interesting dynamic that’s sweet yet edgy at the same time. With all fashion elements from Midtown Plaza, the ensemble begins with an ivory lace skirt from Guess and pleated top from American Eagle. The camel leather jacket from Bryan’s and knee boots from Town Shoes take the chill off a brisk autumn day. The smart deep purple bag and rings, bracelets and earrings in this season’s “it” metallic - gold - are from Le Chateau. Britni-Lee’s hair and make-up artistry is by Angles SalonSpa, also in Midtown Plaza.

be in for a pleasant surprise! The past two years have seen big names moving in, and some all-time favourites doing mini revamps and renovating their locations to stay current with the fresh designs of new stores. The high end charm bracelet jewellery brand Pandora has found a home at the Midtown Plaza. Originating from Denmark and found on the first floor, their inclusion has sparked other jewellery stores to invest in store makeovers. Kiosk all-time favourites, Sunglass Hut and Metalsmiths have moved out of the hallway and into their own spaces; both can be found on the main level of the Plaza.

Leather and lace is a powerful fashion combination for fall and winter. Dress lace down with tights and boots or take it up with sheer stockings and stilettos. Mix in leather and you’ll be a style front runner. DAISY LIEU, MARKETING DIRECTOR, MIDTOWN PLAZA

With a reputation as Saskatoon’s ‘fashion mall,’ Midtown Plaza has been impressing the public by attracting big name brands and retailers to their downtown shopping centre. Continuing to add to the fashion retail roster, the popular shopping centre has been scouting out some new (and popular) additions to include in their mall directory. “We really focus on offering Saskatoon those big name brands and well known retailers they love but previously had to leave to find,” says Daisy Lieu, Marketing Director at the Midtown Plaza. Positioning themselves as the experts in offering customers fashionable brands and clothing, the shopping centre has decided to take it one step further. “We have really invested a lot in being the city’s fashion advisors, assisting in showcasing the latest trends and how to put them together,” says Lieu. This is easiest seen with the Midtown’s social media outlets including their blog “Midtown Plaza’s Fashion Forum” and of course their revamped media and print campaigns. Going beyond just offering the public the best in retailers and clothes, the Midtown has also included fashion events on its yearly ‘to do’ list. So what is coming up for Saskatoon’s favourite shopping centre? The latest and greatest coming to the Bridge City is the women’s clothing brand and store, Dynamite. Owned by the Montreal based store Groupe Dynamite, and sister stores with Garage Clothing, the brand is known for its chic style at affordable prices. Offering day time looks for work, casual weekend wear, and of course evening outfits for the femme fatale, the brand has a definite Montreal-infused identity. Found on the main level, the store will be opening its doors to the Saskatoon public late this fall. Catering to young professional women, Dynamite promises a unique shopping experience with their store layout and leading edge in store design. For those who have not frequented the Midtown Plaza in quite some time, you will

TIPS

MIX IT UP! Guys are getting braver with prints and patterns this season. Don’t be afraid to mix them into your wardrobe. Start by adding an unexpected pattern on your socks, a hat or a bow-tie from Banjo. Many of Banjo’s lines are coming out with subtle prints on the pockets of shirts, sweaters or the lining of pants. GARRETT KENDEL, BANJO

Evenings are cooling down, geese are gathering and Halloween candy is on the shelves; fall is upon us. It’s time to pack up the sandals and think sport coats and rich, autumn colours. This year’s autumn International Fashion Week catwalks saw everything from biker jackets a-la James Dean to new takes on the pleated trouser. The blockbuster film remake of The Great Gatsby has sparked a revival of shawl cardigans and smart striped ties of the roaring 1920s. While the Brooks Brothers’ pink, striped suit likely won’t make it into your closet, the “Fitzgerald Fit” and modern updates on classics like pocket squares and waistcoats can be easy to work into a wardrobe. Over at Elwood Flynn for Men Ltd., a great core piece for fall is the Hugo Boss two-button single-breasted suit. Featuring a trim silhouette and luxury wool, this garment offers both soft tailoring and formality. This suit captures the spirit of fashion and good taste that Flynn’s customers have grown to expect. Classic patterns including window panes, glen checks and subtle stripes are key to the sophisticated mood of the season. If you don’t know your plaids from your houndstooth, Flynn and his staff will happily offer a crash course in patterns and how to work them into your wardrobe. Having celebrated 60 years in business this year, Elwood Flynn for Men Ltd. continues to be a beacon of fine taste in Saskatoon. The colour palette reflects the classic shades of fall with dark navy, earth tones, charcoal and black with some fun punches of colour in mauve and purple accessories. Smart accents and shirts are great ways to liven up the business wardrobe, while newcomers to the office scene are well advised to start with a well-fitting navy or black blazer. A custom-tailored garment makes that huge difference between a confident gentleman and a guy who is wearing his big brother’s suit. “Being well dressed doesn’t make the man, but it does make that important first impression,” Flynn says. He also noted that you can make a big impact with a good pair of shoes, like the Allen Edmond shoe in a shade like merlot or burgundy. The contemporary menswear store, Anthonys Fashion for Men, also encourages customers to make a statement with their footwear. Rather than reaching for the regular chocolate brown or black, owner Anthony Graham-Cutts suggests a lighter camel shade or sand tone. “Picking a shade that’s just a little out of the norm and adding a coordinating belt looks fantastic with just about any suit,” Graham-Cutts says. “When you take the time to add a camel shoe and belt and a coordinating tie to bring the whole outfit together, it says that you have thought about what you are wearing. You’re not just grabbing stuff out of the closet in the dark,” he says. Investing in quality materials and a bespoke suit to build a stylish and current wardrobe for business starts is always a good move. Properly tailored fabrics always feel and fit better, and are going to last. Starting with core shirts also allows colour to be added with brighter ties, pocket squares or even patterned socks. Choosing a bright tie adds a lot more value to a wardrobe than going with something like a bright, hot-pink shirt. The unstructured sport coat can add a casual yet dressy appearance that’s definitely not your square-shouldered suit from 1990. For a shirt you can take out on the town, check out their button-front shirts with velvet flocking. “We’re trying to do something that’s a little more contemporary, a little more metropolitan,” Graham-Cutts says. Customers at Caswell’s Company Ltd. can expect to find a full range of garments fit for the board room as well as weekend wear. Their sport coats can do double duty with a zip-in insert that transforms the garment into a lightweight jacket. Lipson Shirtmakers’ line of Flex Fit shirts are another great way to add versatility to a wardrobe. This range of shirts can be worn under a suit or with casual pants and are touted as the “Superman” shirt by Lipson; Clark Kent by day and

RELAXED STYLE The ‘boyfriend store,’ Banjo offers a casual everyday look that’s anything but boring. John McCammon models pants, denim shirt and shoes are by Jack & Jones from Denmark, t-shirt by Zanerobe from Australia. The fivepanel hat by Publish is a Banjo customer favourite and the backpack by Will Leather Goods from the U.S. offers a chic way to transport your gear. The entire outfit offers versatility with simple wardrobe staples, easily transformed to a dressier look by tucking in and buttoning up the denim shirt. When the weather cools off, layer the denim shirt under a sweater, cardigan or plaid shirt. Zanerobe makes comfortable and unique tees perfect for layering or wearing alone. Check out all the trends in comfort and style at Banjo at 122 Second Avenue North.

COLD ENOUGH FOR YOU? You’ll look forward to the chilly days of fall and winter with this season’s must-have winter jacket from Caswells in Scotia Centre. Model Gregg Bamford will stay comfortably warm yet ruggedly handsome in this slim-fitting Mattia quilted leather jacket by Milestone. The jacket’s outer shell is 100 per cent leather, with a soft, supple finish. The knit hood is removable for more temperate days. A fashion-forward line from Germany, Milestone has mastered the fine line between fashion statement and everyday functionality. Gregg teams his jacket with a pair of Hugo Boss jeans, all from Caswells Company Ltd., in Scotia Centre.

caped crusader by night. Accent pieces are still bold, but in deeper colour tones for fall. These strong colours include rich blues and suits in a charcoal grey. “When you go to those deeper colour in suits and sport coats, you’re going to need an extra burst of colour,” says Gord Burgess, owner of Caswells. Suits are staying clean and trim with narrowed shoulders and jacket sleeves being worn a little shorter, allowing a peek of the bright accent shirts. The staple garment is, you guessed it, the black or navy blazer coordinated with a pair of wool pants or some dressy jeans. The next step would be a charcoal or navy suit. “Those are the staples, and they have always been the staples. Now you’re just wearing them differently than you have in the past,” Burgess says. These three fashion experts agree: build some personality into a carefully chosen and well-fitting core outfit and you can’t go wrong. If clothes really do make the man (or, as the Bard put it, ‘the apparel oft proclaims the man,’) it may be time to step up your game with an updated suit and some daring sparks of colour.

New owner, new lines at Banjo Outpost

Dress for success by Jesse Green For SP Creative Features First impressions are formed in just seconds, and recent research shows that a tailored suit can make a man appear more confident and successful than one wearing a regular, off-the-shelf suit. In a study conducted at the University of Hertfordshire last year, more than 300 participants were shown images of a man in a made-to-measure suit and another in an off-the-shelf suit. After seeing the images for just three seconds, participants were asked to make judgments about the person in the picture. The man in the tailored suit was rated more positively than his counterpart in five categories; confidence, success, salary, flexibility and trustworthiness. Humans are hard-wired to make snap judgments, and it is widely believed that facial expressions play a key role in these impressions. However, in this study, the subjects’ faces were blurred. A summary of the study says: “The change was very subtle. Both suits were formal, the same colour and the same fabric, yet nonetheless they had a very different impact upon perceivers. This study demonstrates that people are influenced also by subtle features, such as the cut of a suit, which has a powerful impact on judgments of personality and professional status.” The research was conducted by Prof. Karen Pine, Prof. Ben Fletcher and Neil Howlett at the University of Hartfordshire in collaboration with Mathieson & Brooke Tailors Ltd. So, we are left with a question: Is a made-to-measure suit worth the extra investment? According to Anthony Graham-Cutts of Anthonys Fashion for Men - absolutely. “When you invest in quality materials you are going to get more value per usage,” he says. And, don’t forget, you’re left wearing a garment that drapes just so, pants that reach the right length and shoulder seams where they should be. This is clearly not your big brother’s suit.

INFLUENTIAL A well-tailored suit conveys the image of confidence, success, salary, flexibility and trustworthiness. Above, models walk the runway at the Giorgio Armani show during Milan Menswear Fashion Week. Photo: Vittorio

by Jeannie Armstrong SP Creative Features Editor There’s a guy-next-door quality to Banjo Outpost, in more ways than one. The hip menswear store opened for business in early spring of 2012, neighbour to the successful women’s boutique, Tonic. Founder Roxanne Woodley envisioned Banjo as the “boyfriend” store, the perfect complement to Tonic’s two boutiques on Second Avenue North and Broadway Avenue. She was inspired by the large number of Tonic customers who enjoyed shopping with their boyfriends or husbands in tow. By opening Banjo, Woodley made shopping a great co-ed experience, offering fresh style options for guys, including vintage-inspired denim and wardrobe-building tees, shirts, pants and jackets. Banjo Outpost proved successful beyond Woodley’s expectations. Finding it challenging to manage both Tonic locations as well as Banjo, Woodley sought a new owner for Banjo. She didn t have to look far. Garrett Kendel, the fiancé of long-time Tonic staff member Kelsi Wake, had always been interested in owning his own clothing store and jumped at the chance to buy Banjo Outpost, effective September 1. “I’ve always been into fashion,” says Kendel, adding that he really enjoys fashion merchandising and selecting brands and pieces that will appeal to Banjo’s ever-expanding customer base. “I’m really excited to see the store grow in the direction I’ve set out.” At a recent buyers’ trade show in Las Vegas, Kendel got to meet the designer of Publish, a California line that’s really captured attention at Banjo for its urban style. “We’re the first to bring Publish to Saskatoon,” says Kendel. Bestsellers at the store include Publish’s jogger-style pants with elasticized cuffs and five-panel hats. Kendel is also introducing several new lines to Banjo Outpost, including chinos by Vancouver’s The Daily, footwear by New Balance and CLAE, as well as retro-futuristic Komono watches. “If a customer comes in and wants a specific style or item, I’ll be happy to custom order it for them,” says Kendel. Banjo Outpost is located downtown at 122 Second Avenue North.

Durand’s celebrates a decade of fabulous footwear by Jeannie Armstrong SP Creative Features Editor When does a passion for shoes become an obsession? “When you eat, sleep and dream shoes,” laughs Leane Durand, the founder of durand’s fine footwear and accessories, located downtown at 255 Second Avenue South. The destination boutique, specializing in exclusive designer shoes, boots, bags and accessories, celebrates its tenth anniversary this weekend. Durand began her career path as an educator, teaching students at the middle school level. After nine years in the classroom, she discovered her ‘inner entrepreneur’ and the desire to own her own business became a driving force in Durand’s life. She had identified a need in the city for unique, innovative designer shoes and accessories. “At that point shoes were my passion; they weren’t an obsession like they are now,” she says. “I did lots of research and worked with Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan to develop a business plan. The store opened in August of 2003.” Durand wanted to be downtown and was able to negotiate a space she felt had great potential. “At the time, there was very little retail activity going on at the south end of Second Avenue. I felt I could develop a business that would become a destination, one where people would seek me out.” Now the block has become one of the most vibrant in downtown Saskatoon, home to trendy shops and buzz-worthy restaurants. When buying footwear designs for her store, Durand does her best to seek out exclusive, first-to-Saskatchewan lines. “I look for footwear lines that are interesting, comfortable, unique. It’s always been about finding footwear designs that nobody else has,” says Durand. “These days, the majority of my lines are from Europe. I’ve discovered some great new designers whose distribution in Canada is very limited. They aren’t lines you’ll find in every retail chain store.” The quality of European-made shoes is incomparable, says Durand. “The quality of the leathers and the attention to detail is unsurpassed. The European designers are always coming out with new innovations in footwear; they’re definitely ahead of the curve.” One of durand’s signature lines is FLY London, the trend-setting design group based in Portugal. The brand of “universal fashion culture,” FLY London is renowned for its award-winning original designs, outstanding comfort, unique fabrications and fresh colour palettes.

DEPART FROM THE ORDINARY... Arrive in style! At the forefront of fashion, durand’s fine footwear and accessories is always on a quest for unique, innovative and exclusive collections of shoes, boots, handbags and accessories. Crafted in Portugal, FLY London is one of durand’s best-selling lines, guided by the motto “always progressive, never conventional.” Shown here, in a vibrant shade of red, the AIRT ankle boot creates visual interest through the use of bold colour and texture. The block heel is on trend and turns up the comfort quotient. Cobalt blue tights by Hue complete Michelle’s fashion-forward look, all from durand’s fine footwear and accessories, located in the heart of downtown Saskatoon at 255 Second Avenue South.

FLY London made its Saskatchewan debut at durand’s nine years ago and became an immediate bestseller. After ringing up impressive sales, Leane Durand was invited by the company’s CEO to open the second-only FLY Zone in North America. The 2011 opening of the FLY London store-within-a-store was a huge milestone for durand’s. “We have the biggest selection of FLY London across Western Canada,” says Durand. “It’s been an exciting partnership. Last year, the three owners of FLY London made a special trip to Saskatoon from Portugal to see the store and be part of our gala fashion show.” After a busy summer of renovations, durand’s fine footwear starts its next decade with a fresh, exciting new look. “We’ve done a big revamping of the interior and will be adding some new imaging to our exterior,” says Durand. The team has also been busy setting up displays of the season’s newest shoes, boots, bags and accessories. “I’m so excited about this season! The colours are incredible, with lots of rich browns, cognacs and fabulous jewel tones - from olive to bordeaux,” says Durand. Among the newest lines to debut at durand’s is Coclico, French for ‘poppy.’ “It’s a line of beautiful handmade shoes from Spain, available at only three or four stores in Canada,” says Durand. Renowned for their selection of boots, durand’s has everything from this season’s must-have ankle boots to the latest over-the-knee boots. And for Canadian winters, Durand says that La Canadienne out of Montreal can’t be beat for style, warmth and quality of construction. Durand has expanded her selection of accessories, with new lines of jewellery, scarves and fashion tights. At durand’s, you can always find the season’s perfect handbag. “I’m so excited about the bags I’ve brought in by Henry Lou. The leathers are incredible! I custom order them; they are handmade in L.A. I don’t know of any other retailer in Canada who has them,” says Durand. Today marks the start of a two-day 10th anniversary celebration at durand’s fine footwear and accessories. Today is FLY Day Friday, with lots of specials, prize draws, music and drinks. Saturday is durand’s Salute to Ten Years celebration! “There will be hourly draws for free shoes, bags and accessories. It’s a day of fun, food and music!” says Durand.

Life with four kids is anything but boring. Add in your own plumbing business and life can be “hectic”, says our male makeover candidate Rob Waddell. This month his three oldest headed back to school (grade 7, grade 5 and kindergarten), while he and his wife got to know their latest addition – Evander, born August 10. His family remains his priority in all he does. In fact, it’s the reason Rob started his own company, Faithful Plumbing. “That way I can be at their concerts or if they have something going on, I can go get them,” he explains. The flexibility of owning his own business does mean he is often doing paperwork at night after the kids are in bed. His day can start as early as four a.m. when he takes care of Evander when his wife, Diane, needs to sleep. In the midst of his gruelling schedule, this dedicated daddy took a day to enjoy some pampering from Magnolia Salon, with fashions from Ultimo Euromoda. First up at Magnolia Salon, located at 173 Second Avenue South, Rob got a full treatment shampoo including scalp massage from stylist Carlyn McCulloch. “I really loved the natural curl in his hair and he already had a shorter cut, so I thought I would clean up the sides a little bit and really chip into it with my scissors so it’s nice and textured,” explains Carlyn. “That way the cut will last a lot longer, I’m sure he’s really busy with work and kids, so that’ll be nice for him. It’s really easy, but he still has that curl on top to play around with. He can mess it up a bit more, or sleek it up a bit more – he just has some nice options.” After the cut, Carlyn trimmed his beard and then offered to do a colour application. While Rob didn’t have a lot of grey, the product she uses washes out slowly and “doesn’t require a lot of commitment or maintenance” which makes it popular with many of her clients. Waddell regularly goes to a salon for his haircuts, but admits this experience was rather different. “I don’t think I’ve ever had someone wash my hair like that. That was weird, but in a good way,” Rob says. Next up, Rob was off to Ultimo Euromoda, at 204 Third Avenue South, to get decked out in the latest fashions. Owner Barry Flynn prepared two outfits for the plumber dad. Rob may have been a reluctant model, but he was an eager student as Barry gave him tips for dressing for someone who’s five-foot six. “When you’re vertically challenged, wear your clothing as slim as you can and still be comfortable,” explains Barry. “Have your shirts shortened to half cover your seat. Your legs will look longer and it will be a more attractive overall balance.” As well, it can be tough to find clothes that fit a muscular physique without being constricting or uncomfortable. As a result Rob says he often wears relaxed fit denim which Barry says can overwhelm his frame with too much fabric, creating a bulky silhouette. Instead, Barry chose a slim-cut jean with extra stretch and treated with tree-resin. The latter provides a smoother texture that won’t cling. The dark chocolate colour Belstaff jacket has leather detailing and slim fit. The bright pop of colour livens up the rich tones of brown. The second outfit is all about texture and harmony, featuring sophisticated tones of grey and is perfect for more formal occasions such as a business meeting or wedding. The Mexx jersey blazer is all the rage with a trendy shawl collar. The knit material offers more give than a regular suit jacket, providing a less constrained fit. The popular European cotton shirt by DAGR features a black-on-black print. Dressy five-pocket denim from Civil Society creates a sleek foundation. A luxury tie and belt with inlaid stone buckle by Brave Belts add the finishing touches. Barry also demonstrated how to pull off the hippest trend for formal wear in men – wearing a tie with top shirt-button undone. “For social situations try leaving your top button open and sliding your COVERING COVE CO VERI VE RING NG A ALL LL Y YOUR OUR OU R WE WEDD WEDDING DDIN DD ING TR IN TRAN TRANSPORT ANSP AN SPOR SP ORTT NE OR NEED NEEDS EDS ED S tie knot down. This denotes a more casual hip look than the dressy office look,” Barry says. This look is more casual than the usual shirt and tie and most men find it more comfortable. Both outfits were finished with a dark navy and brown boot by No Brand from Denmark. The dark navy blends well with a variety of 13 or 14 Passenger White SUV Limousines colours and the tall profile slips easily under slim-cut pants, making them 17 Passenger Limousine Bus a popular choice for jeans or office Alcohol Licensed♦Packages Available wear. ♦Reasonable Travel Costs Rob was impressed with Barry’s Stags ♦ Stagettes ♦ Airport Transfers depth of knowledge on his products. You wouldn’t necessarily get that at most livingskieslimousine@sasktel.net clothing stores.” CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE BOOKING ONLINE Rob says he will definitely take Barry’s lessons to heart when he’s www.livingskieslimousine.ca choosing his wardrobe. What does your eye style reveal about you?

What does your eyewear style reveal about your personality? Are you a bold adventurer… an elegant aristocrat… a cheeky rule breaker? Don’t let your glasses define your personality. Choose fashionable frames that truly express your personal style. The Vision Council, a global organization representing manufacturers and suppliers of the optical industry, has identified these exciting style trends for the Fall/Winter 20132014 season. Which trend captures your individual style best?

Chunky acetate rules the show and is further embellished with over-the-top gems, flat tops, silver chains and studs, lacy trappings and dramatic temple detailing. Seductive jet black is the colour to live by; however, splashes of red, pink and jewel CONTINUED ON PAGE F18

WOMEN’S TRENDS: BON VOYAGE Globe-trotting pioneers in search of rich tapestries and authentic character are bound to be pleased by the vintagetextile bricolage that swept down the runway this season. The same poetic charm is found in eyewear, as cultured influences take the limelight. Abstract, earthy patterns give off an ethereal vibe, while vintage shapes – including round, wayfarer and Clubmaster-inspired silhouettes – anchor the frames for an easy-going, wearable look. Deep browns, vegetal hues and quintessential tortoise colourations are complemented by faux wood finishes, leather and metallic additions, floral prints and two-tone effects. These off-the-beaten-path shades and glasses are perfect for any woman with a hunger for wanderlust. SHEER IMPULSE Cheeky rule-breakers will triumph over the glam ’n’ grit running rampant on the fashion scene. The same “allure of the forbidden” ideology translates seamlessly to eyewear, as daring shapes shatter traditional norms. Futuristic cat-eyes demand attention, along with surprisingly slim, aerodynamic profiles.

HOT OFF THE RUNWAY Thought you could never have Prada in your wardrobe? Located in University Heights at 419 Ludlow St., Family Focus Eyecare brings the world of couture design within reach, with its outstanding selection of fashion-forward designer frames. Above, model Tiffany Schappert wears two high-style eyewear designs from Prada, the iconic fashion house from Milan. RELAXED AND HIP

RICH AND VIBRANT

The lounge is the perfect spot to unwind with coworkers after work or grab a night cap after a concert.

Saskatoon’s newest downtown hotel – the Holiday Inn on Pacific Avenue and 22nd Street – showcases the latest innovation from the long-time hotelier. The lush design, modern chic furniture, colourful funky accents made the hotel an ideal location for our Fall Fashion photo shoot. “We’ve had several comments from guests where they can’t believe it’s a Holiday Inn,” remarks Brent Andrew, Regional Director of Sales and Marketing. “It’s changed that much. Then they can’t believe it’s in Saskatoon of all places. That may come from the updated, modern feel.” After 61 years in the hotel industry, the Holiday Inn updated their look with a concept called the HUB and the Saskatoon location was the first. The lobby, café, 24-hour market, restaurant and business centre are all open to each other, with seating areas between each. These transition areas are punctuated by colourful furniture in shades of turquoise, green and chocolate brown. The result is a warm inviting environment, perfect for after-dinner drinks, a fast lunch with friends or an after-conference game of Nintendo Wii. You read that right. One of the transition areas between the lounge and the restaurant has two big screen televisions with

Rich textures and vibrant colours greet guests when they arrive at the Holiday Inn in downtown Saskatoon.

Nintendo Wii consoles to work off some stress or just have some fun with colleagues. The HUB concept will be applied to new hotels across the chain as well as hotels upgrading to a modern look. However, the Saskatoon Holiday Inn remains unique in that the colours and design were completely the work of local owners. Whatever the reason for a visit, Andrew says everyone has the same reaction. “You can see people take two or three strides in the front door and then they’ll stop and their head is on a swivel.” Right on the edge of the downtown business core makes the Holiday Inn convenient for a variety of travelers from business associates to shoppers eyeing up the latest fashions at Midtown Plaza or those attending the many concerts and events in the city at TCU Place. Andrew says the hotel often partners with TCU. “We coordinate with TCU Place where we’ll look after the guests and they can take care of the larger meetings in the conference space over there.” The hotel also has an indoor heated pool and state-of-the-art fitness area. Guests have access to indoor heated parking and free high-speed Wi-Fi. Some of the rooms also offer a twist on traditional layout featuring sitting areas with

couches. Another layout offers beds in a mirror configuration instead of side by side, giving more privacy to each sleeping area. Facing the main floor elevators are two large interactive digital screens posting the latest local news, weather and airport departures. The upper floor has a board room for conferences or meetings and three penthouse suites. With full kitchens, the suites also work well for corporate open houses to launch a new product or to thank employees. A pool table in one and baby grand pianos in the others allows for some fun and music, while catering staff keep the party stocked with delicious appetizers and drinks.

For events, the banquet room can accommodate weddings or groups no larger than 130 people. Andrew says the catering team is eager to create a custom menu tailored to each guest’s specific needs – just part of their ongoing efforts to create a hotel where guests truly feel at home. “Ultimately,” he says, “we want to make people feel comfortable so that they can relax and be themselves. It’s perfectly fine to walk into the property at the end of a work day or when the conference has let out, to come into the lounge, loosen your tie and share some appetizers with friends.” For bookings call 1-877-660-8550.

tones dish up a welcomed change. Brazen vixens in pursuit of elusive masculine swagger are destined for sheer happiness when they come face to face with these saucy frames.

TIMELESS TREASURES Aristocratic flair resurfaces this fall in tried-and-true classics. Ladies who are infatuated with style legends Jackie O, Grace Kelly and Princess Diana will be delighted by the resurgence of oversized round and square sunglasses with contemporary finishes. Soft, modest cat-eyes and smooth ovals maintain the same level of sophistication when it comes to optical frames. Both sunnies and specs feature regal décor including jewelry-inspired detailing, swooping temples, as well as metal and cut-out accents. Calming, honey-like neutrals, silky blacks and cherry reds give way to a well-balanced and refined color palette. The mantra “less is more” – a fashion commandment worth living by – rings true, especially when it comes to eyewear.

Everyday necessities, including specs and shades, are reinvented with a fresh twist to make those tell-tale classics feel new again. Heather gray, muted navy, olive green and back-to-basic black come together to form a tasteful colour scheme that’s both versatile and distinguished. Simple rounded and distinct square profiles set against a neutral backdrop create a polished appearance, whereas traditional wayfarer-like silhouettes give off a light-hearted prepster air. CHARMED ARTIST Fall’s fashion compass for men points to the open road ahead, as more fluid and unrestricted looks become the new standard. This easy-going sentiment carries through to eyewear in chocolate and mocha browns, warm tortoises and other earthen tones. A variety of shapes with vintage roots – like old-school aviators, Clubmaster-inspired profiles and John Lennon rounds – provide comforting options for otherworldly fellas who consider their style a form of self-expression. Weathered wood finishes and textured acetate add a dose of ruggedness, while leather and metal trims offer an unexpected juxtaposition of refinement. With eclectic charm in abundance, these frames are the ultimate counterpart for laidback guys everywhere.

POSITIVE ENERGY Small bursts of colour infiltrated the runways, heating up this year’s cold weather styles for men. Eyewear aptly followed suit, revealing high-energy shapes and striking hues fit for dudes who like to break the mold. Coloured and mirrored lenses are sure to catch any daredevil’s eye – in orange, green and blue shades – and complement all types of silhouettes. Look-at-me shields, sporty wayfarers, bold aviators and oversized squares induce a sense of adventure that’s too compelling to turn down. Meanwhile, colour blocking and casual metallic temple detailing keep these sunnies and specs grounded and fun. by Jackie Yochim Manager, Visions Salon and Spa Old Hollywood is inspiring fashion from head to toe this year! The team at Surface Hair and Visions Salon and Spa has just finished photographing our Retro Glam Collection 2014, showcasing the season’s hottest trends. Here is a sneak peak at the style trends Surface is about to release for the hair industry this fall and winter. Soft and romantic or high and dramatic, we have created a gorgeous collection of hairstyles that are a collaboration of retro trends and today’s high fashion. Glamorous rolls, waves, curls, and bouncy volume are leading today’s dreamy fashion trend, while daring part lines, high volume and heavy bangs give a retro and independent feel. Women wearing shift dresses, with strong perimeter lines draw the eye to the Marilyn-influenced hairstyles and red lips. Beehives, twists, and finger waves have women feeling romantic and edgy no matter what length of hair they have. A perfect hair cut that will give lots of volume and long lasting blow out styles need softly shattered edges and interior framing with a razor (when in the right hands, a razored hair cut can be the difference between a good cut and an amazing hair cut!) this will give hair the volume and movement it needs, while structured scissor cut layers, allow for control for round brushing and iron setting. The layered bob is huge this fall, which we have nicknamed “The Marilyn” - full and bouncy round brushed hair. The trick is letting the ends move and curl, allowing the hair to be slightly tousled. If you are feeling extra flirty, try what we call “The Audrey” – short, cropped and wispy hair, with an adorable long bang that can be finger waved, worn smooth, or braided. The weekly shampoo and style has made a come back and at Visions Salon and Spa. A long shampoo, and scalp massage followed by a relaxing blow dry and style is the perfect start to your week, or weekend. The most popular and new product at Visions Salon and Spa is Trinity Dry Shampoo by Surface! It’s the answer to skipping your regular morning shampoo/style and enjoying your hair for another day, gifting you more time in the morning and many more great hair days with

Along with all Surface products, Trinity Dry Shampoo is natural-vegan-and gluten free. It conditions your scalp and root, while absorbing and neutralizing dirt and oil. The fresh, clear dry shampoo absorbs dirt and oil, kicks up volume and shine, leaving zero residue behind! This ultra-fine mist of lemon, amaranth protein and minerals creates a fresh and healthy scalp between shampoos. I am often asked how to use dry shampoo? Just spray onto your dry scalp and roots, allow your hair to dry, shake or brush out extra product and style as desired. It can also be used on freshly washed hair to add volume and texture.

DAY ONE: Blow dry Jump Mousse or Reflect Gel in hair for volume. Style with round brush or bumper iron, partnered with Theory a flexible hairspray that will protect and hold your hair.

DAY TWO: Flip head upside down mist Trinity Dry Shampoo on scalp and roots allow to dry, then brush out hair, smooth fly-aways with a touch of Bassu oil on the ends adding shine and hydration.

DAY THREE: Exactly the same as day two, it is also a great day for a retro twist. Put it up with a little backcombing, smooth over, twist, pin and finish with a touch of Theory firm or Bassu Shine spray. RETRO GLAMOUR HAIR STYLE CREATED BY JACKIE YOCHIM OF VISIONS SALON & SPA.

Collection captures starlit splendour by Jennifer Jacoby-Smith of SP Creative Features At a time of year when light becomes a little more precious, Regina jewellery company Hillberg and Berk launched a brand new collection called Aurora Lux in hopes of capturing that radiance. “Quite often autumn and winter are notoriously associated with the loss of light, but we wanted to bring the focus back to what light sources are present this time of year,” explains award-winning designer and founder of Hillberg and Berk Rachel Mielke. “We connected with different treatments of light in our subject matter and the epic and supernatural way light finds us even in the dead of winter.” Launched in 2007, Hillberg and Berk has continued to produce jewellery that is both attainable and luxurious. While most Hillberg and Berk collections contain some element of sparkle, Aurora Lux also has bit of edge with new stones and some new colour palettes. Mielke calls it “romance with a bit of sci-fi”. As always, Hillberg and Berk is known for the versatility of each piece. Sometimes a long necklace comes apart into two short necklaces or a bracelet can be removed from the necklace. Other pieces will have a clasp to attach a pendant or charm. This flexibility gives women endless options when wearing their jewellery. “A woman can buy that necklace and then change the charm or collector on it each season, depending on the colour she’s wearing or the mood she’s in,” explains Mielke. Several of the pieces capture winter pastels with light blue, pinks and green melded with silver and glittering stones. The collection pulls from the latest fashion colours, but the aim is to create ageless pieces. “We always focus on designing pieces that are very on trend with what’s happening in fashion, but also very timeless,” Mielke goes on. “We want to make jewellery that’s always going to feel like it’s fresh and timeless.” Each collection also is an opportunity to give back to the community and make a difference in the lives of women locally and around the world. Mielke says, “When I started the business I wanted it to have a deeper impact than just making pretty jewellery. So every season instead of a model we feature a real woman as the face of the our collection. And we tell her story through the collection.” This season Hillberg and Berk features New York bestselling author Gayle Lemmon. Her book The Dressmaker of Khair Khana tells the story of entrepreneurial Afghanistan women against the backdrop of oppressive Taliban rule. Proceeds from a featured Aurora Lux necklace will benefit two charities. The Malala Fund helps Malala Yousafzai and her family. The teenager was shot in the head after advocating for the rights of all children to go to school. Despite her struggles, the young woman remains determined to get an education. The International Center for Research on Women advances equality and combats poverty by advocating for policy and programming changes in the developing world. “It’s a really incredible story and a story of inspiration, (about) finding your light in a very dark situation,” Mielke says. Finding the perfect piece in the collection not only offers women the opportunity to feel beautiful dressed up in lovely jewellery, but also a chance to connect with women around the globe struggling to find their own light in a personal season of darkness.

Designers rekindle their love affair with fur by Ashleigh Mattern for SP Creative Features Fashion is cyclical, and no one knows that better than Chery Kozak, Hudson Bay Fur Salon regional manager. Kozak has been in the fur business for over 30 years, and she’s seen the popularity of fur peak and wane many times. About 10 years ago, designers started working with fur again after a decline in popularity, and now we’re starting to see fur on the streets once more, she says. The downturn in the economy also affected fur sales, but with markets looking up, there’s a little extra money in the bank for luxurious items. “[Fur] gears to the people who are investment dressers, because with proper care... they’ll last a long time,” said Kozak. Fur accessories are a great way to get a fur item in your fashion collection without breaking the bank. Kozak says popular items include gloves with fur trim, trim on capes and cashmere sweaters, fur headbands, and detachable fur collars that can be put on a sweater, coat, or leather jacket. Almost anything goes with fur fashions: jewel tone dyed furs are popular, as is knitted fur. Younger clients tend to go for the popular retro look, choosing coats and jackets in styles that they saw their parents and grandparents wear. Shorter jackets are popular because we live in a car culture where getting in and out of a car with a long coat is a bit of a hassle, says Kozak. Fashionistas who live downtown and do a lot of walking are more likely to opt for a racoon or mink coat that will keep them extremely warm as they run errands. At the Saskatoon location, the Bay Fur Salon

FUR ROCKS THE RUNWAY THIS SEASON The industry’s leading designers have given fur an eagerly awaited stamp of approval, making fur coats and jackets a staple of their Fall/Winter collections for 2013/2014. A visit to the Bay Fur Salon reveals how versatile fur really is – from short go-anywhere jackets to the sumptuous elegance of a dramatic full-length coat. Shown here, Erin Gray with She Modelling snuggles up to the luxury of a full-length blonde long-hair beaver coat – the ultimate antidote to a cold Canadian winter. For busy days or casual outings, Laurissa opts for the hip-length silver cross female mink jacket with an oh-so-soft fox collar. To view the entire Fall/Winter collection, visit The Bay Fur Salon, located on the main floor of The Bay, next to shoes and handbags.

tries to stock as many fur types as possible because the Bay is the last furrier in Saskatchewan. Still, the majority of the furs found at the Bay are Canadian. “Our customers like to buy what they are familiar with, so they know what a raccoon is, they know what a beaver is,” said Kozak. “[Canada] only produces about two per cent of the skins in the world, but they’re very good skins.” Kozak says there’s a lot of misinformation about fur out there, and she has spent a good chunk of her time in the business helping clients to get the right information about the products they’re buying. Wearing fur can in many ways be considered part of the movement to be more environmentally friendly: it’s long-lasting and easily reusable and recyclable, and unlike the petrochemicals used to create synthetic materials, fur is a renewable and sustainable resource, and it’s biodegradable. Plus, much of the fur comes from trappers, who act as caretakers of the land; they’re often the first to report when something is wrong, and they keep an eye on animal populations. No endangered species are used for fur in Canada, and both trappers and fur farmers are held to standard in the treatment of the animals they catch or farm. Entry level fur jackets that are warm enough for Saskatchewan weather start at about $3,500. Shearling jackets are also popular, and start at the lower price of about $3,000, or even as low as $2,500 if you can find a promotion. “There’s a cost factor,” said Kozak. “It’s not like going out and buying a pair of sandals [at the end of summer]; it’s a different kind of an investment.” But the big price tag pays off over time. Kozak only owns fur coats for winter wear, and some of her coats are decades old. Every 10 years or so, she’ll remodel the coats to match current styles. Her initial investment of about $1,000 on a long hair beaver coat 30 years ago ends up being the same price as – or even cheaper than – a synthetic coat. Proper storage is also important, especially on the prairies where the weather is dry.
