Favourite Restaurant: Too many faves. But Amigos is a must-go-to every time I’m back home. Been a tradition for my pals and I for nearly 20 years now. Great food, inexpensive, friendly and a great place to gather (with or without kids) around a big table and catch up and talk about all our misadventures of our younger years. Favourite Cultural Attraction: Does my parents’ house count? (Arati and P.K. Chattopadhyay, creators of Chatty’s Indian Spices) Best Indian food and conversation about culture and diversity you’ll find in Saskatoon. The weir? Not sure that counts either. But it is uniquely Saskatoon, and nothing like contemplating life watching water flop over the edge, and hear the rushing sound. Plus, the pelicans are amazing. Aside from that, I’d have to say the Western Development Museum. Again, where else can you find Boomtown? It’s so fantastic for all ages, and reminds us of the great Prairie Spirit. Favourite Family Fun Spot: I haven’t been back to Saskatoon yet with my entire 3-kid brood. But my eldest, my 4-and-halfyear-old daughter loves the Lawson civic centre pool and wet area. We walk there, past my old childhood school, and then splash around. It’s inexpensive and expansive....something that is so NOT Toronto. (Sorry, Toronto. I still love you!) Favourite Shopping Destination: F2/Jock at Midtown Plaza. People in Toronto always make fun of me when I come back from S’toon with an entire suitcase full of new, cool clothes. They tell me, I can get the same stuff here. But there’s something sweet and friendly about going back to the same store and showing customer loyalty. Plus, Guy, the owner, and I always talk about travelling to amazing far off places. Now THAT’s great service.

Celebrating Canadian history Diefenbaker Canada Centre This winter, the Diefenbaker Canada Centre will feature two exciting travelling exhibits alongside the unique replica rooms and permanent exhibit highlighting the Rt. Hon. John G. Diefenbaker’s legacy. Expedition: Arctic, developed by the Canadian Museum of History in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Nature, will be on display until January 30. This exhibit explores the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-1918 and the immense lasting contribution it has made to our understanding of the Arctic. 1812, a travelling exhibition developed by the Canadian War Museum, presents a dramatic new account of the War of 1812, offering visitors a richer and deeper understanding of a conflict that shaped Canada’s destiny. 1812 will open mid-February 2015. The Diefenbaker Canada Centre is open Monday to Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from noon to 4:30 p.m. Free admission, donations welcomed. Mendel Art Gallery celebrates 50 years! Come celebrate everything the Mendel has meant to Saskatoon over five decades – and dream with us about what Remai Modern Art Gallery is becoming at River Landing. We created more Mendel memories with the November 1 gala, Bewitched! The Magic Continues. Funds raised will support a lecture program at Remai Modern, honouring Fred Mendel and family, and the Mendel Gallery legacy. The fall show, Modern Visions: the Mendel Art Gallery 50th Anniversary Exhibition, reflects the extensive permanent collection. Modern Visions concludes January 4, followed by LUGO on January 10. The winter exhibitions, running January 17 to March 22, feature Afghan battle rugs, and a 20th anniversary show from Tribe Inc., a Saskatoon centre for Aboriginal art.

Classical music in modern times Amati Quartet Now in their 12th season, the University of Saskatchewan Amati Quartet performs on four rare string instruments crafted in Italy in the 17th century by members of the Amati family. Talented musicians Marla Cole (violin), Rudolf Sternadel (violin), Geoff Cole (viola), and Terence Sturge (cello) invite you to experience these exquisite Amati instruments in the spectacular setting of Knox United Church. On November 15, the Amati Quartet performs works by Haydn, Mendelssohn and Smetana. These composers bared their own souls to compose some of the greatest gems of the string quartet repertoire. Haydn, Mozart and Debussy are highlighted on January 10. Haydn’s Op. 20 quartets mark a monumental stage in the creation of the string quartet genre with the achievement of the four voices as equals. Mozart’s Hunt quartet is one of the set of six that he dedicated to Haydn – the composer he held in highest esteem. Influenced by visual art, literature, and the 1889 Paris Exposition, Debussy brings a kaleidoscope of new colours to the string quartet palette of sounds. The final concert of the season, on March 21, will demonstrate the power and relevance of classical music in modern times with guest artist Samuel Deason. The electrifying young pianist will perform the Piano Quintet by Shostakovich paired with Schubert’s String Quartet Death and the Maiden. Excellence in Craft Affinity Gallery Join in celebrating the Saskatchewan Craft Council’s 40th anniversary in 2015, with a visit to Affinity Gallery. Affinity Gallery is the province’s only public gallery dedicated to the celebration of fine craft, presenting up to eight exhibitions a year. On until November 29, It’s A Shoe In! Enjoy this whimsical exhibition of ‘shoes’ by provincial ceramic artists, Sask Terra Group. Imaginary Architects, December 5 to January 10, explores handmade toys and games, from traditional wood to contemporary digital media. Every year, more than 70,000 visitors drive through the Holiday Light Tour, raising over $200,000 for the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation and Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation. Last year, the event welcomed its one millionth visitor, a tremendous accomplishment for Saskatchewan’s premier winter tourist attraction. The BHP Billiton Enchanted Forest lights up for the 16th Holiday Season beginning Friday, November 21 with the annual Saskatchewan Blue Cross Push to Play Light Walk. The popular attraction opens to vehicular traffic on Saturday, November 22. The Enchanted Forest runs from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. until January 11, concluding with a second Light Walk. Admission at the gate is $10 per person and $30 per vehicle (maximum 7 passengers). Children 5 and under are free. Motorcoach tour admission is $8 per person; driver and tour guide are free. Family skating fun Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink At its beautiful river edge site in Kiwanis Memorial Park, the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink at PotashCorp Plaza has earned recognition as one of the best outdoor rinks in Canada (Readers Digest 2006). The beautiful rink attracts more than 20,000 skaters a year. With a $1 million facelift, the outdoor rink is even more inviting, with permanent all-season washrooms, an accessible trail link from Meewasin’s primary trail, a warming shelter with a wood-burning fireplace and an outdoor fire pit. The warming shelter is open to the public daily and skates are available at no cost with donations appreciated. Meewasin thanks Tim Hortons for its support of operations. Watch for the Tim Hortons Tree Lighting Party in December, the
PotashCorp Skating Party in January and the Cameco Family Day Skating Party in February. The Meewasin rink is open daily, noon to 9 p.m., from late December to mid-March. Explore the wonders of nature Beaver Creek Conservation Area Discover Beaver Creek Conservation Area along four hiking trails leading through prairie, forest, sheltered creek, and river valley habitats. An interpretive centre provides interactive displays to assist in your discovery of Beaver Creek’s winter residents. Be a track detective as you read animals’ stories in the snow. Offer some sunflower seeds to a black-capped chickadee and have them feed from your hand. Beaver Creek Conservation Area is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed weekends through November and December.
