SSP has presented one main-stage musical in late June/early July every year since then. They’re kicking off their 50th anniversary in 2014 with a New Year’s Eve Gala at TCU Place on December 31, 2013. Enjoy cocktails while you peruse a variety of displays, followed by dinner, a live show, and a dance, all-leading up to the midnight countdown. The show will be a revue of favourite songs from shows over the last 50 years. Then dance the night away as we bring in the New Year. Symphony unveils fresh new season by Hilary Klassen of SP Creative Features Taking the stuff out of “stuffed shirts,” the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is set to roll out a fresh new season which looks to be a lot of fun. “Just come in your shirt,” laughs SSO Music Director and Maestro,Victor Sawa, metaphorically speaking. New concerts and series are part of the fresh approach, and music will be more compelling and exciting as gifted international and local musicians (including the orchestra’s own) lend their talents to the upcoming season. The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra continues its popular Master Series on November 16, with Czech-Mate!, featuring Stephane Lévesque, principal bassoonist for the Montreal Symphony, as well as the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra, and Daniel Smith as guest conductor. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, a perennial favourite, will showcase Denise Djokic on cello, with Gille Auger conducting, on February 8. Local groups, Saskatoon Chamber Singers, Greystone Singers, and the University and Community Chorus, will be featured in Music is GREAT Britain, March 8. This year’s Pop Series will feature the Music of Pink Floyd in January with lead vocals by Jean Meilleur from Jeans ‘n’ Classics. At the Movies is an Oscars Wrap Party offering a spectacular line up of nominated and winning scores and songs from movies like

The Omen, Avatar, Out of Africa, the DaVinci Code, Schindler’s List and more. Argentine tango dancers will get things sizzling in April when Quartango hits the stage with Richard Carnegie conducting. One of the Specials concerts is the Liberace Show, Cue the Candelabra on November 23. “It’s going to be great!” says Sawa. “It’s Brian Jackson who comes out in a sequined jacket and plays everything in the style of Liberace, right? It’s hilarious!” The other is Vivaldi’s Four Season’s with Austrian Elena Denisova, considered an ambassador of tonal sensuality, on violin and Alexei Kornjenko conducting. For the holidays, a Holiday Gospel Spectacular will have you clapping and stomping, if not dancing in the aisles. There will be amazing powerhouse gospel performances (guests TBA), fun in the lobby, and Santa will ride in for this rare family-friendly musical treat on December 7 at TCU Place. The resplendent and transcendent Handel’s Messiah is a timeless and moving SSO tradition, taking place at the Third Avenue United Church December 14.Vocals are by the Saskatoon Singers including soprano Chelsea Mahan, mezzosoprano Alicia Woynarski, tenor Michael Harris, and baritone Dominic Gregoria. In his fourth season conducting for the SSO, Sawa says he sometimes gets inspiration for concerts from chance meetings. “When I’m at Starbucks somebody will come up and say, ‘Why don’t you do Bernard Herman?’ Oh sure, okay,” he says, adding that “each concert should be an event, and each concert should be

inspired by somebody. This is very important, what do the people want. That’s really what motivates me. And it’s love of music. It’s in my bones. It’s like eating.” The symphony plays a significant role in the cultural life of Saskatoon, and as the city grows, that role can only increase. Over the last three seasons, Sawa has noticed that the numbers attending the symphony in Saskatoon have risen dramatically. Sawa has also detected a changing dynamic. “Younger people, 20 to 30, are looking for things to do, places to go, á la Montreal, á la Vancouver. And with the arts, they want to have something to

go to before going out. This is where the concerts come in. And things like restaurants are going to change to keep up with this.” “Saskatoon is growing,” adds Sawa. “When it reaches half a million, for head offices wanting to relocate, cultural life is crucial and the symphony is the cornerstone of the whole thing.” All Masters and Pops Series concerts are at TCU Place. Players’ Choice Sunday afternoon concerts are at the Delta Bessborough, and the Core Series is at Paved Arts. National Geographic names Saskatoon

Place of a Lifetime Saskatoon is a place of a lifetime! National Geographic Traveler, in partnership with the Canadian Tourism Commission, has launched 50 Places of a Lifetime: Canada. Among the places that made the list is Saskatchewan’s largest city, Saskatoon. “We are thrilled that Saskatoon has been included among 50 must-see destinations in Canada,” said Todd Brandt, President and CEO of Tourism Saskatoon. “It is truly a testament to our city’s vibrant culture and welcoming spirit.” With the launch of 50 Places of a Lifetime: Canada, National Geographic Travel brings together the best Canadian travel writers with iconic National Geographic photographers. The result: a breathtaking, destination-based, digital super mag unparalleled in its comprehensive coverage of any single country. Nationalgeographic.com receives 22.4 million visitors per month from around the world! “This is a celebration of all that is Canada,” said Keith Bellows, a native Canadian and editor-in-chief of National Geographic Traveler magazine. “For anyone planning a trip to Canada, this massive digital content is a must read.” Aside from spectacular photography and intriguing stories, the super mag’s content includes practical travel information on where to stay, when to go, how to get around, what to eat or drink, what to buy, and what to read or watch before you go. There are also helpful links as well as a fun fact about each destination. “Canada is a place for exploring, and we are thrilled to share some of the most immersive travel experiences that our country offers,” said Greg Klassen, senior vice president, marketing strategy and communications, Canadian Tourism Commission. “We are pleased to align ourselves with the great National Geographic brand and its extensive travel experience and reach. This innovative initiative will inspire the world to visit Canada.” The super mag content falls into four categories: Country

Unbound: civilization and nature in harmony; Urban Places: exploring great cityscapes; Wild Spaces: wonders of the outdoors; and Paradise Found: retreats to restore the soul. The scope of the coverage is impressive and features a mix of wellknown and soon-to-be-discovered experiences and destinations from coast to coast to coast. 50 Places of a Lifetime: Canada reveals a country that is nuanced and little known and inviting discovery. You’ll find a country as original and unique as any in the world, with unlimited possibilities for touring,” said Bellows. The super mag includes four galleries of about 25 original photos each in the following categories, with links back to destination articles: Canada’s Cities, Coastal & Countryside Canada, Landscapes of Canada, and Animals of Canada. Saskatoon is featured in the “Urban Places: Exploring Great Cityscapes” galleries. Among the interesting tidbits that writer Robin Esrock points out in his profile of Saskatoon are our city’s pedestrian-friendly trails and our sunny disposition (we attract more sunlight per year than any other Canadian city). “Saskatoon is a pocket of Saskatchewan’s culture, vitality and welcoming prairie spirit. These days, city streets are buzzing with an infusion of new restaurants and residents, breweries and bars, making Saskatoon one of Canada’s fastest growing cities,” writes Esrock, who is the host of the NatGeo Adventure TV series World Travels. Esrock also gives a nod to our city’s great eateries and dining spots, including Truffles Bistro, Calories, Weczeria Food & Wine, Amigos Cantina, Duck Duck Goose, the Berry Barn and newcomer Two Gun Quiche House. Other Saskatchewan destinations included on the list include Prince Albert National Park and Big Muddy Valley. Check out the complete Canadian showcase, at travel.nationalgeographic.com/canada50.
