Cabin makeover

Clear out old and paint to update SAMANTHA PYNN FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS

Q:

We bought a cabin, and it’s super small, super 70s and super awesome. It comes with most of its furniture, which is seriously granny-style but with potential. We don’t know what to keep and what to donate, or if we should just start fresh. There’s barely time to design — I’m working on it mostly from my office on lunch. What colour should I paint the cabin? It’s dusty rose with wood window frames and wood ceiling beams. Can you recommend where to buy things online (from my cubicle)? We want the cottage to feel beachy and country.

A:

Ever since Summer Home, the show I filmed a few years ago, cabin decor has been on my radar. Definitely try to work with what you have in the cabin, especially any wood furniture. Painted furniture in white, black or a bold colour will bring country charm to your cabin. Replace such things as disintegrating sunbleached curtains and dusty old carpets and rugs. Any textiles or upholstered furniture that are allergen hazards should be thoroughly cleaned or replaced. As far as paint goes, paint over that dusty rose with a soft white to bring a bree zy beach feeling to your cabin. On Summer Home, we painted every cabin in Para Paint’s Snowfall. At the cabin, you don’t have to paint your window frames if they’re substantial,

REG31989128_1_1

but do paint any wood window or door trim that’s less than three inches wide. For now, leave the wood beams and live with them for a year. It’s better to paint them on a rainy day at the cabin a year from now, then to wonder whether you should have left them rustic and woodsy. Every time you head to the cabin, and as you become familiar with the area, you’ll pass little shops by the side of the road. Outof-town second-hand shops have great prices and plenty of wares to bring a little bit of the country to your place. To create a beach vibe, decorate with things that would normally be used outdoors. This year I’m loving Natasha Wittke’s Norquay paddles. These uber-cool artisan paddles will work beautifully on the wall or in the river. I’ve done a little shopping for you. Hopefully these finds will help you leave the office and head to the woods!

MAKE IT RIGHT

Outdoor projects demand research MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

CHRIS MIKULA/Postmedia News

Vinegar is a great natural cleaner, deodorizer and disinfectant.

Get rid of that garburator grossness REENA NERBAS FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS

Q:

My garburator has a nasty odour coming up from the drain. I have tried baking soda on its own, baking soda and vinegar and also scrubbed the rubber gasket. I have tossed down lemons and run the garburator, and no difference. I have even poured a small amount of household ammonia down the drain and the sour smell lingers. We will be away for a month and I wonder if this will just get worse. Any suggestions are appreciated. A: Food that is chopped up in the disposal is not always properly washed down the garburator and accumulates on the walls of the disposal. If food gets old, it will decay and smell like compost. One of the causes for this is that not enough water is running into the disposal after food has been ground up. To fix this, you need to call a plumber or clean the unit yourself by disconnecting the pipe that leaves the disposal from the drain system under your sink. Purchase a rubber test cap and attach it to the tube end of the pipe and tighten the clamp. Put an empty bucket under the end of the pipe. Fill the disposal with water. The water will back up into the sink. Turn the water off when it is level with the top of the strainer basket in the sink bottom. Pour half a cup (125 mL) baking soda and half a cup (125 mL) vinegar (or household ammonia) into the drain. Leave for one hour to give the solution a chance to loosen up the food particles. Loosen the clamp and let the water pour into the bucket. Reconnect the disposer to the plumbing drain system. Put the plug into the sink and fill the sink with hot soapy water, baking soda and vinegar. Leave for one hour and drain. Regularly drop ice cubes and, as you said, lemon and orange peels through the garbage disposal to help freshen. If the smell remains, call a plumber. Missed a column? Can’t remember a solution? Need a speaker for an upcoming event? Check out my website Reena.ca.

Now that it’s summer, many homeowners have outdoor projects on their minds. The most popular are decks and fences, and the most popular material for these types of projects is wood, by a long shot. When it comes to outdoor wood projects and materials, the three big contenders are pressure-treated — or PT wood — cedar and composite. They each have their pros and cons, but what it usually comes down to is what do you have more of: Time or money?

PRESSURE-TREATED (PT) WOOD

Pressure-treated lumber is wood that’s been treated with chemicals to make it resistant to rot and insects. Between composite and cedar, PT wood costs the least, which is probably why it’s so popular. The main thing to keep in mind is that you can’t use it indoors — it’s strictly an exterior product — you can’t burn it because of the chemicals in it and you need special nails and screws. Back in the day, arsenic was used to treat PT wood and make it weather-resistant, but that was replaced with copper. Problem is, when PT wood gets wet the copper in it will start to corrode metal fasteners, including nails, screws and deck hangers. You also need to be careful if your project requires flashing. Most flashing is aluminum and exposed aluminum will corrode if it comes into contact with moisture, especially wet PT wood. Regular galvanized nails and screws won’t

hold up for long either. You’ll start to notice staining around the screws and hangers, but eventually they’ll corrode completely and could lead to structural failure. Stainless steel fasteners will not corrode, but they’re expensive, which doesn’t make them practical — especially if you’re trying to save some money by going with PT lumber. Your best bet is to use vinyl-coated “green” wood/deck screws. These are resistant to chemicals in PT wood and some even have lifetime guarantees. To keep PT wood looking good it needs regular maintenance — sanding, sealing, painting or staining. It’s less maintenance if you stain rather than paint it, but if you want longevity with little to no maintenance consider another material.

But cedar has one big drawback: It’s expensive — more expensive than PT wood, no question. If you like the look of cedar but you can’t take the cost, one way to save some money is to build your structure and support out of PT wood and use cedar for railings and surface planks. This will give you the look and smell of cedar, and some added strength and support. Just remember: Use stainless steel, zinc-dipped or ceramic-coated “brown” wood/deck screws when working with cedar, and if you decide to stain it you will have to maintain it regularly. Cedar doesn’t need to be stained — it weathers to a grey-looking colour, which some people like. But if you want to keep it looking like new it will take some elbow grease every two to three years.

CEDAR

COMPOSITE

Cedar looks and smells great, and it’s a popular building material for exterior projects for a few reasons: ■ It won’t warp when exposed to moisture, which is good for the outdoors. ■ It’s naturally resistant to rot and insect damage, so no dangerous, corrosive chemicals or off gassing. ■ It requires less maintenance than other types of wood, like pine or spruce, even PT wood. All you have to do is clean it at least once a year with a mild detergent and water. Just don’t use a pressure washer. Cedar is soft and a pressure washer can damage it. ■ You also don’t need to treat it with preservatives, unless it comes into direct contact with the ground, which it shouldn’t if your structure is properly built — you never want wood touching soil. ■ It’s resistant to temperature-related stress, which makes it good for outdoor projects where temperature changes and splitting are common.

I didn’t like composite wood when it first came out, but it’s improved over the years.

Composite wood can be made from a combination of different ingredients, like polyethylene or polypropylene mixed with glass, wood fibre, wood flour, as well as other wood and recycled products. It can be textured to look like real wood and different types are resistant to UV, fading, stains, insects, splitting and/or warping. But it will cost you — up to five times more than PT wood. No matter what type of material you decide to go with, do your research, hire the right pro and know exactly what it will take to make it last. For example, if you’re building a deck, most contractors will tell you the joists need to be 41 centimetres on centre, but 30 cm is better to prevent warping and dipping, especially when it comes to composite wood. E N T E R TA I N I N G

Outdoor kitchens heat up stylish outdoor spaces MELISSA RAYWORTH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS For years, it was enough to park a barbecue grill next to a picnic table on a patio and call it an “outdoor kitchen.” But over the past decade, we have taken backyard cooking and dining to a new level, adding elaborate cooking islands, outdoor sinks and refrigerators, even outdoor TVs. Unless you have a really tall fence, this is the one “room” in your house neighbours will see whether you invite them to or not, notes designer Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design for The Home Depot. That inspires many homeowners to pay extra attention to their outdoor entertaining area. Many of us also love the appeal of cooking and entertaining in a space that’s relatively indestructible, says designer Jeff Blunkosky, owner of Pittsburgh Stone and Waterscapes. Here are some thoughts from Fishburne, Blunkosky and Los Angeles-based designer Brian Patrick Flynn, creator of the design blog FlynnsideOut.com, about the elements that make a useful, beautiful outdoor kitchen without huge expense:

Attention to accessories is key to making your outdoor space comfortable. Entertaining is made easy with a weather-resistant mobile bar cart.

Build an island A b o u t a d e c a d e a g o, Blunkosky says, many homeowners began feeling that “a stand-alone grill just kind of standing there” didn’t look that g reat in their backyards. Plus, it provided little workspace for prepping food. The answer was to build around it, incorporating the grill into a stone base with a countertop and drawers underneath — pretty and practical. The countertop serves as cooking prep space, and usually extends out so that

BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN/HGTV.com photos

Brian Patrick Flynn creates a cosy, casual, outdoor dining space with a pergola, which adds shade, and weather-resistant drapery that adds privacy. bar stools can be pulled up underneath to create a bar area for guests. To turn a cooking island into a full-service kitchen, add a refrigerator, sink and ice maker, plus more storage drawers. That involves running a water line and power line out to the structure, so costs rise. So does

the time the project takes, says Blunkosky: Designing and installing an elaborate cooking island surrounded by paving stones can take as long as putting an addition on your house.

Bring the heat As people spend more on their outdoor kitchens,

they want to use them for as much of the year as possible — no matter where they live. Fireplaces, fire pits and heaters, either free-standing or wall-mounted, are good ways to extend the season for your outdoor kitchen. Outdoor pizza ovens also have become popular.

And grills have come a long way since the days when we poured lighter fluid on a pile of coals. Fishburne says the new generation of outdoor cooks wants more than steaks, hamburgers and hotdogs. “They’re thinking about Korean barbecue,” she says, or asking, “How can I make breakfast outside?” T he new Spirit Grill from Weber has “seven interchangeable grates,” she says, including a pizza stone, pancake maker and poultry rotisserie attachment. Some buyers use it to make three meals a day outside, she says. Grill quality is important, Blunkosky says, especially in areas with harsh weather. But if you’re trying to be strategic with money, Flynn points out that even a nice grill and other outdoor appliances might need to be replaced within five years. He recommends investing more in the permanent things (a higher-end cooking island or paving stones) rather than a hugely expensive grill.

Frame the space Outdoor draperies can add privacy, inject colour and patter n, and set off

your dining area as a distinct space. Pergolas achieve the same effect, and used together the two elements can create a dining area that feels luxurious, at minimal expense. A pergola also gives you more options for built-in lighting. A chandelier or hanging pendant light over the dining table can make your outdoor space feel like a true dining room, and there are many designed for outdoor use. Outdoor sconces can be hung on the pergola’s posts.

Accessories As for tables and chairs, Fishburne says there are many options. Some clients, she says, invest in high-end brands with a reputation for lasting a decade or more. If you have a small outdoor space, Flynn suggests looking for modular furniture pieces. Some outdoor sofas, he says, can be broken down into smaller sections and used as table seating. He also suggests adding a mobile bar cart to serve as a cocktail station or as a spot for serving dishes. It brings a bit of indoor style, and can easily be brought inside during bad weather.

NIGERIA

PHOTOS: SUNDAY ALAMBA/The Associated Press

Maimuna Abdullahi was married to a man twice her age when she was 13 and beaten by him for preferring an education over marriage at such a young age.

A child bride’s life of beatings, divorce Marriages have roots in poverty, lack of education

locked her into their hut, for days. Maimuna bided her time until her husband went to town to find work. Nine months ago, she took off, escaping to her father and begging him to let her return home. Instead, he whipped her until her back was raw. Then he summoned her husband and forced her to go back to him. She fled again, this time to a sympathetic aunt in a nearby village who took her in. Maimuna still feared she could be forced back. She went to Kaduna, where she now shares one cramped room with her cousin’s family.

MICHELLE FAUL THE ASSOCIATED PRESS KADUNA, Nigeria — By the time she ran away, Maimuna bore the scars of a short but brutal marriage. Her face swelled so much from her husband’s beating that doctors feared he had dislocated her jaw. Her back and arms bristled with angry welts where her father had whipped her for fleeing to him. She was gaunt from hunger, dressed in filthy rags. And barely a year after her wedding, she was divorced. It would be a tragic story for a woman of any age. But for Maimuna Abdullahi, it all happened by the time she was 14. “I’m too scared to go back home,” she whispers. “I know they will force me to go back to my husband.” Maimuna is one of thousands of divorced girls in Nigeria, children who were forced into marriage and have since run away or been thrown out by their husbands. They are victims of a belief that girls should get wed rather than educated, which drew the world’s attention after Boko Haram terrorists abducted more than 200 schoolgirls two months ago and threatened to marry them off. Most are still missing. Maimuna’s former husband, Mahammadu Saidu, blames her few years of school for her disobedience. “She had too much ABCD,” he says. ■ Nigeria has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world. Across the country, one in five girls is married before the age of 15, according to the United Nations. In the poor Muslim north that number goes up to one in two. This is also where Boko Haram is trying to impose

Maimuna Abdullahi, left, attends school in Kaduna, Nigeria. She is one of thousands of divorced girls in the country who were married as children. She has since fled her husband’s abuse. its extreme version of Islam, changing the face of the region and especially of its girls. Children as young as five now hide their heads and shoulders in hijabs, a rare sight just a few years ago. Some girls become wives as early as nine. There are no official numbers for how many of these girls get divorced, often destitute and shunned by their families. But they are all too visible. A few kilometres from where Maimuna lives, children her age and younger sell their bodies to truck drivers. Maimuna was saved from this fate by Saadatu Aliyu, who has turned an old family home into a school for divorced girls. At the Tattalli Free School, which gets by on private donations, a couple of dozen girls gather in the courtyard for a sewing lesson. Toddlers mill around, the children of divorced girls who came in pregnant. “ N o b o dy k n ow s h ow many thousands of them there are,” says Aliyu of the

girls. “That’s why we have so many prostitutes, and very young ones, in the north.” Maimuna grew up on the outskirts of Kaduna. Her father, a farmer called Haruna Abdullahi, picks up a stone and throws it at a stray dog as scrawny as he is. At 45, he’s been married for 30 years. “It’s our culture to give our girls in marriage,” he says in a reasoning tone. “From the age of 12, a girl can go to her husband’s house.” The tradition of child marriage is rooted in poverty and a lack of education. A marriageable daughter can be a farmers’ biggest asset, bringing in a bride price and meaning one less mouth to feed. So in late 2012, Maimuna’s father arranged to marry his eldest daughter to his best friend’s eldest son. The son, Saidu, paid a dowry of $210 or 35,000 naira for Maimuna — more cash than Abdullahi has had in his life. She was 13, and he twice her age. Saidu farms his own plot of land and owns a small mo-

torbike, making him relatively well off and eligible. He says he has known Maimuna all his life, and waited years for her to reach what he considers marriageable age. “When she was a kid, I would bring her candy and call her ‘wifey,’ ” he says. “We were always meant to

“I’M TOO SCARED TO GO BACK HOME. I KNOW THEY WILL FORCE ME TO GO BACK TO MY HUSBAND.” MAIMUNA ABDULLAHI be together.” Maimuna said she did not love him and begged her father to let her stay in school. But her wishes were not up for discussion. Her father was clear on what counts: “It’s what is good for the family and the community.” ■

The link between child marriage and education is clear. Only two per cent of married girls in Nigeria go to school, compared to 69 per cent of unmarried girls, according to the United Nations. Some 73 per cent of married girls received no schooling, and three out of four cannot read at all. Even before she got married, Maimuna knew she would be unhappy. Nobody prepared her for the marriage bed. There was no advice, no warning of what to expect. She settled into a new life where she felt like a slave. When she wasn’t working in the fields, she was cleaning, carrying water and firewood, cooking and at the beck and call of her husband’s demanding parents. Every day she was exhausted, and when she finally got to bed, her husband wanted to “bother” her, she says. He never kept his promise to let her go to school. When she objected to her treatment, her husband

Maimuna considers herself among the lucky ones. She thinks she’d like nursing, and wants to master English and Arabic. “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up but, even if I get married, I want to have some education to back me up,” she says in her native Hausa, with a teacher translating. “I pray that what I have done will help the younger ones, that my parents learn from the experience of my running away from home.” It is by no means certain. Abdullahi denies beating his daughter, and says he is no longer angry with her. He insists he is happy she has found a place where she can get the education she craves. Yet he gets visibly upset as he describes the financial problem she has left him. Maimuna’s former husband is demanding back his money, but Abdullahi has spent it on land. And Saidu already has land — what he wants is cash, Saidu, in the meantime, says he no longer cares for Maimuna and will move ahead with his life. “This time I will marry a girl of 12, so that she will do what I want to do,” he says. “Because if you marry a girl who is older, then she will not listen to you.” As he speaks, his eyes slide to the porch where M a i m u n a ’s 1 0 - ye a r- o l d sister, Hafsat, is cuddling a neighbour’s baby. A sly smile curls his lips.
