According to a recent survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), it’s everything from swanky outdoor lighting systems to ornamental pools and low-maintenance plantings. Gardens, landscaped spaces, outdoor kitchens and entertainment areas are also hot. We have a look at how that shakes out on this side of the border:

Living walls, a popular indoor feature, are gradually finding their way outdoors, especially into small, hardscaped yards where the walls can include herbs or annual flowers.

Water features such as ponds and waterfalls continue to make inroads but, as lots get smaller, compact patio ponds and fountainscapes, such as tabletop fountains, are catching on.

Whether vintage, vividly modern or DIY, Vancouver-based bloggers Jan Halvarson and Earl Einarson have taken their passion for design and unique handmade crafts and estab-

lished an influential online presence during the last decade. But mainstream they are not. So when approached about a year ago by the big-box chain store Target to collaborate on a housewares collection, they were initially taken aback. For them, the offer came out of the blue. “We’re really indie people. That’s where our background really is,” Einarson says, “and working with a larger company, we weren’t sure how it was going to mesh — but they were fantastic.” The married couple was approached by Gigi Guerra, a design partnerships curator for

Target, who said the company was looking to gather some of the top design-oriented Pinterest influencers to create a product line for summer. “And then they asked us to present them with ideas and designs,” Halvarson says. They indulged in some crafting of their own, handsewing denim journals that featured storyboards of their ideas for the collection, which arrived in stores last month. “They were fairly open. It was a fairly wide berth they gave us, enough leeway to figure out what we wanted to do,” Einarson says. And from the starting point of Target’s idea of summer entertaining, the couple embraced it as “glamping.” The glam aspect of the picnicking/camping collection is evident in the recurring theme of the colour pink and floral patterns that run throughout the collection: Paper plates, cutlery, straws, lanterns, camp stoves and picnic baskets.

I love pools. But they’re expensive, and that’s not just the installation but also maintenance and heating costs. Not to mention your home’s electrical will need to be upgraded to 200 amps. (Most new homes have 100-amp service, and older homes typically have as little as 60 amps.) That’s why there aren’t too many homebuyers out there falling over themselves trying to buy a house with a pool. If it’s a smart investment you want you will be better off putting that money toward a new roof, windows, upgrading the electrical wiring, finishing the basement or renovating the kitchen — these are things that all homebuyers can appreciate, especially if it can save them money in the long run. In fact, pools are often a limiting factor in selling your home. Don’t install one thinking it will increase your home’s value. And I will always recommend taking care of the essentials — such as the foundation or building envelope — first before thinking about getting extras like a pool. Any money spent on a pool is a huge waste if your house is falling apart or your energy bills are through the roof However, if you’ve done your homework, kept up with your home’s maintenance and you have the budget, a pool can make sense

But like I said, a pool requires maintenance. You can’t put one in and forget about it. If the concrete on the pool deck starts to crack or the lining has a leak it’s time to call a swimming pool professional. When a pool liner leaks, the water has to go somewhere, and it will get in behind the lining and start to rust the pool wall. If that happens, the entire lining has to be removed and replaced, and if the rust is bad enough your contractor will have to grind the entire wall. A pro will then use a pre-galvanized paint primer or rust-inhibiting paint and paint the whole pool to pro-

move it. And because it’s rubber, it moves with the concrete underneath it, so you don’t have to worry about cracking. Remember: concrete shifts and heaves thanks to freezing and thawing cycles. For anyone who has a pool, the best time to start thinking about maintenance is at the end of the season. Get a pro to take a look at your pool at the end of summer so they can talk to you about your options and budget. Classicism returns to design limelight Greco-Roman accessories a timeless trend KIM COOK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS If you’re a fan of traditional decor, you probably appreciate the elegant lines and rich history of neoclassical style. Interest in classical style really took off in the second half of the 18th century, when Scottish architect Robert Adam began using its elements in fancy homes, says London designer Adrienne Chinn. Adam recast urns, sphinxes and vine leaves as decorative elements in mirrors and mouldings. “Adam’s style owed much to the archaeological discoveries of Greco-Roman domestic architecture at Pompeii and Herculaneum,” says Chinn. The historical discoveries also inspired the development of neoclassical furniture, which replaced the fussy rococo style with more linear, geometric silhouettes. Today, Greco-Roman classicism is the basis of many interior decor styles — Louis XV, Regency, Federal and Georgian among them, says New York designer Elaine Griffin. “As the oldest recognized style, classicism carries with it the approbation of time and taste,” Griffin says. And while it never falls too far off decor’s radar, it’s really enjoying a moment now. “Classicism’s clean, sleek lines are back with a vengeance this summer, both in a refined way and in overthe-top, tongue-in-cheek style statements,” she says. There are many ways to introduce the style into traditional or contemporary spaces, and at various prices. “Lamps are a great way to bring a neoclassical touch into your decor — classic urn shapes, columns or classical motifs like acanthus leaves look elegant, particularly when paired with a black card or pleated silk Empire lampshade,” Chinn suggests. Stiffel has a wide selection with silver or burnished bronze bases (stiffel.com). “Ornate plaster corbels used as brackets for decorative display shelves bring a classical element to a room,” she notes. Look for plaster ones, or unfinished wood that you can paint or gild yourself (architecturaldepot.com). AllModern has pairs of bookends with busts of Hercules or David. The Perseus console from Currey & Company is a sleek, silver-leafed iron piece with a Greek key border (allmodern.com). At Arhaus, scroll and flo-

Vintage Italian etchings of capital styles would make nice wall art, and so would an intricate charcoal drawing circa 1900 of classical carved marble portraits. A series of intaglio cameos of neoclassical themes are cast in plaster and framed. The retailer’s also got larger pieces, including wooden columns, pillars and plinths

that could be used as display stands for artwork — perhaps for a plaster bust of Ariadne, or a carved finial (restorationhardware.com). Griffin’s not surprised that the Greek key motif is a trend. “Its sleek, straight lines and crisp right angles are perfect counterparts to contemporary design, and are among the few design motifs that truly look great everywhere and with everything,” she says. Smith and Noble offers the Greek key motif in bright combinations of tangerine, navy, red or deep pink with white, or a more subtle pairing of pale grey or aqua with off-white — especially pretty for sheer curtains (smithandnoble.com).
