Kitchens in traditional and vintage homes often are dressed in conservative garb: neutral hues, stainless steel, white on white or beige on beige. Historically, however, kitchens were actually pretty peppy, according to Deborah Baldwin, editor of This Old House magazine. “Pastel g reens, blues, creams and peaches reigned until the early 1930s, when casual, built-in eating areas were painted Kelly green, red and even black,” she says. “We have readers who are introducing brightly

coloured cabinets and appliances in tomato, pumpkin and daisy,” she adds. At this spring’s Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York, manufacturers were showing lots of vibrantly hued kitchen equipment. Bertazzoni’s Arancio range (bertazzoni. com) came in orange, burgundy and yellow. Big Chill (bigchill.com) displayed a wall full of paintbox hues including jadite (a milky green), cherry and pink. The signature line of beefy, professional-grade ranges from AGA (aga-ranges.com) comes in intriguing colours like aubergine, duck-egg blue, heather, pistachio, claret and British racing green. Fans of metallics might go for Blue Star’s dramatic collection of ranges, wall ovens and hoods in copper, gold and a chocolatey ginger, as well as several hundred other colours and finishes. Kitchens of any vintage can look great with colourful walls. Pumpkin, cobalt and deep Prussian blue enhance all kinds of woods, whether you’re working with 19thcentury pine, Craftsman-era oak or mid-century walnut. Or consider the ceiling. In a small galley kitchen, bold colour on the ceiling creates a “jewel box” effect. Deep hues like eggplant, navy, magenta or carmine complement white cabinetry in a large kitchen, and look great in both natural and artificial light. New York designer Gideon Mendelson applied a pea-green gingham canvas cloth to the ceiling of a country house kitchen, and painted the island in a similar shade. Q: My husband and I recent-

ly inherited his parents’ home. He has great memories of growing up there and instead of selling it we have decided to move in. T h e h o u s e h a s g re at bones and is in a wonderful neighbourhood but needs updating. His father had a traditional home office with built-in cherry bookcases, a huge partners’ desk and leather chairs. We want to use this room as a study/TV room. Are we crazy to paint the builtins? Neither of us likes the colour of the wood and have even contemplated tearing them out but feel that would be disrespectful to his father. What do you think? A: Somehow through the ages people have adopted extreme guilt over the idea of painting wood trim, panelling or built-ins. I have a client who has waffled for two years over whether to paint her panelled dining room. The panelling in question is veneer, probably installed in the 80s and depresses her every time she walks into the room. I’ve advised her to paint it. If the panelling was handdone by craftsmen (or her

built-ins, then by all means do so, but my advice is to paint them. You mention wanting to use the room as a combined study/TV room and to me that conjures up images of

cosy nights playing backgammon, watching old movies or sitting with friends after dinner. With that in mind, I take inspiration from the work of Cory Connor Designs (coryconnorde-

signs.com). In the room shown here, Connor transformed “a generic space in a new-build home” into a living room with depth and character where “the family loves to gather.” She papered the walls in a Thibaut grasscloth and painted the baseboard, moulding, trim and built-ins with Benjamin Moore’s Newport Blue. E ve n t h o u g h C o n n o r used a dark palette, she’s made the space feel fresh and modern by keeping the ceiling white, placing a modern fretwork-pattern rug in cream and blue, and adding orange as an accent colour. Her choice of furniture and lighting makes the room feel transitional rather than traditional, while still paying homage to classic studies with the use of a leather sofa and rolling library ladder. I think this should be the goal for you. Use the builtins as a starting point to create a room that you and your husband will enjoy and to which you will gravitate. By keeping your father-inlaw’s bookshelves and finding inspiration with Cory Connor’s monotone colour scheme (it may be aubergine or almond at your house), you’ll not only benefit from the practical storage space, you will have kept a piece of your father-in-law in the house that you and your husband are now making your own.

She used a backsplash of crisp, blue and green fusedglass tiles as a counterpoint to a rustic, Old World-style, metal-and-wood kitchen island, glossy black cabinetry and citrine wallpaper in an Art Deco-era home. In another home, she mixed sleek teal-and-white glass with farmhouse blue cabinets. Baldwin, of This Old House, advises painting upper and base cabinets different colours, or painting an island or hutch in a contrasting shade. “This helps reinforce their free-standing furniture look, which harks back to 18thand 19th-century kitchens,” she says. (thisoldhouse.com) “Painting the floor — either one colour or in a pattern like checkerboard — can reinforce the vintage look too,” she notes. A lot of you might be wondering if it’s too late to landscape around your home. Absolutely not. There are plenty of projects you could and should be doing around your home’s exterior. And the optimal time for outdoor projects and landscaping is dry weather, so take advantage of it. Plus, some jobs — such as painting, staining, or putting polymeric sand in between interlocking — can be done only in dry weather. If you’ll need to hire a contractor for an outdoor project, such as interlocking or re-grading, don’t wait until fall because a one-week project can easily be stretched to two weeks due to bad weather. The contractor will also need enough time to get the job done before cold, wet weather moves in. In some cases it might already be too late to hire a pro, but it is possible — although you could be looking at a November start date. You can do most landscaping projects up to the end of fall, but one thing you should get done by October is any pool work. Some homeowners think they can handle most outdoor projects themselves. But a bad job outside can cause plenty of problems inside. The No. 1 problem I see from amateur landscaping work is compaction. People always underestimate how long it takes for soil to compact. It can take hundreds of years. Don’t think you can do it over one weekend. Let me give you a scenar-

The soil will sink over time and water can pool or even go directly to the foundation. Proper construction loves stable ground. For one thing, when we plant we disturb the soil, allowing water to penetrate — and that’s not good for your home. Two, if the soil is built up the way most gardens tend to be, that little mound of dirt will drive water to exactly where you don’t want it — your foundation.
