Mother Gonzaga Barry IBVM recognised that “what the world needs is a wise, lovable and well-educated woman.” Students in Years 5 to 12 have remained steadfast in their compassion, courage and dedication to all aspects of the FACE Curriculum – Faith, Academics, Community and Extra-curricular – in this year of historic disruption.

We celebrate the success of all of our students and express our gratitude to the village of people who contribute to their growth.

out of your comfort zone, supported by your peers and teachers the entire way.

I will always cherish the incredible support and encouragement that I experienced over my time at Loreto. Through the environment that was created, I was able to try so many things that I never would have considered, from tennis to Orchestra, which I loved. I leave Loreto with more than an ATAR; with lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Being a part of Barry House and getting to know the other girls from my Barry Tutor Group was a highlight of my time at Loreto.

Regardless of all the highs and lows of high school, Barry House always felt like a space where I was welcomed and encouraged to be uniquely myself.

The Year 12 ‘Girls by Girls’ motto for the year was about empowering girls to stand by each other, for each other, to create a strong Loreto Normanhurst. I felt that this theme was particularly fitting for 2020, as we saw the Loreto community rally together on numerous occasions in the face of adversity.

The Class of 2020 was able to draw on a spirit of teamwork to help overcome the complexities of 2020. I am so proud to have graduated with a cohort in which everyone genuinely cares and supports each other.

My advice to future Loreto girls is to do what you love! Try new things and follow your passions, regardless of any worries you may have.

I started at Loreto Normanhurst as a shy and reserved girl who found it challenging to be so far away from home and family.

But thanks to the amazing support given by staff, I could always approach my teachers, boarding supervisors or tutor for help with any troubles I was having. Their great advice and consistent encouragement was so rewarding and allowed me to thrive over my 6 years at Loreto.

The Kendall House community was always like a small family within the wider family of Loreto Normanhurst. It was so special to have the familiar faces of girls across all years in the school grounds who you could approach because you were in the same House together. There was a shared sense of spirit and pride to be a Kendall girl.

Having the privilege of being a part of the Student Council allowed me to see how strong Loreto girls can be in standing up and supporting each other through any hardship.

‘Girls by Girls’ was a prophetic and fitting motto for our year and I hope it is passed down for many years to come.

Looking back over the years, boarding has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life which has shaped me into the person I am today. It has forced me to learn quickly how to be independent being away from my parents and to be respectful of others in a shared environment. What I liked most about boarding was that you always had someone around to help you with homework, someone to study with and even just someone to talk to who was in the same boat as you.

Boarding has also given me the amazing opportunity to travel to different towns and properties of my peers who are from all over NSW and Australia.

My Loreto education allowed to me experience new activities and subjects that I would not otherwise have thought of doing. For example, I found my passion for Drama and acting when it was a mandatory subject in Year 8 and then continued to do it right through to my senior studies.

These experiences taught me how to be more confident in myself and allowed me to discover my strengths and weaknesses.

Being a boarder is not a scripted reality.

Every girl has a different experience. Unlike others, my first year of boarding was a breeze; I was homesick on limited occasions and immediately fit right into the community. My second year of boarding as a Year 10 student was more difficult and yet, because I had so many great friends, I still thrived in the boarding scene and was awarded Senior Boarder of the Year. This is something that I take with great pride and shows the strength of our community in boarding.

The highlight of my education was the privilege to form friendships with girls of all ages from across regional NSW and Australia.

I have travelled because of my friendships to rural areas and have been given insight into their lives. I am grateful for the range of people I have met through Loreto – both peers and staff members – and will cherish those relationships forever.

Despite the major events that Loreto Boarding celebrates, some of the most memorable moments of boarding come at the more unexpected times; the walk to and from study of a night, the time before lights out and after

handing in phones when everyone gets a surge of energy, playing Uno at dinner and catching up with younger year groups.

Boarding at Loreto not only provides independence, but each girl leaves their own mark on boarding as a ‘Pink Lady.’

Although 2020 was difficult, it made myself and my fellow leaders think outside the box.

We worked as a leadership body both in the day and boarding schools adapting to change and initiating new traditions, especially in our final weeks.

The ‘Girls by Girls’ motto we instilled in 2020 was so important in making the most of our final year of school. I specifically remember in National Boarding Week, when the Boarding School completed the annual 1km walk/ run around the school, how supportive all girls were of each other. Whether girls were running or just going for a stroll with friends, the boarding community truly embodied the motto.

The holistic education Loreto Normanhurst provided me with allows me to appreciate situations from a different perspective. Loreto encouraged me to participate in a vast variety of activities to motivate involvement and teach the importance of trying new things fearlessly. The Loreto FACE Curriculum (Faith, Academic, Community, Extra-curricular) certainly enhanced my education by exposing me to unique situations where learning new skills and communicating with different people was crucial.

What I loved most about Loreto was the strong community and genuine connections.

The smiles in the hallways and the friendly welcoming nature of the school make it a safe and nurturing environment in which girls are able to support each other’s unique abilities.

Boarding at Loreto provided me with an endless number of opportunities which I would never have accessed otherwise. Being surrounded by other Loreto girls taught me to live, appreciate and work with others whilst also creating an abundance of friendships and memories.

Mulhall House was where I made many of my first friends and memories at Loreto.

Mulhall House as a whole has such a strong sense of family, composed of many nurturing tutor groups. I found tutor group a great and easy way of making connections and friendships with girls from all year groups.

This is something I deeply cherished, as it made the transition to Loreto so smooth and manageable.

I encourage each student to fully embrace each Loreto opportunity. The more experiences you are exposed to, the more you learn about others and yourself. Put yourself out there and don’t be afraid!

I loved getting to know so many girls across every year group and embracing all aspects of life at Loreto. Mulhall House, for example, really did become my not-so-little family at school, somewhere that I always felt welcomed and supported. My tutor group was a constant source of laughter and fun as well as somewhere I could turn to if I needed advice. Forming bonds with girls from every year group within my House helped to build community spirit and an incredible support network. I am so proud to have been a Mulhall girl.

Participating in extra-curricular activities also provided a great opportunity to challenge myself and try new activities. Friday night debates and Saturday sports games are some of the best examples of Normo spirit, with everyone cheering each other on and supporting each other no matter the result.

My best advice to future Loreto girls is to throw yourself into all aspects of the Loreto community and make the effort to try new things and develop relationships with as many people as possible. As a very ‘unmusical’ person, I never thought that I would sing in a choir and yet I loved singing my heart out at Music Festival with my House community. This demonstrates the power and joy of the Loreto spirit and is a great example of how my Loreto education inspired me to push and challenge myself.

School is so much more than just academics and I’m so glad that I had to opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities to debating and immersions.

The FACE Curriculum covering Faith, Academic, Community and Extra-curricular instilled a strong passion for social justice within me and reinforced the value of community service and caring for others which I think are so important especially in the current climate.

Since Year 7, I have been so proud to be in Barry House. Barry is a welcoming, inclusive House filled with spirit, pride and enthusiasm.

Throughout my time at Normo, I have always felt an immense amount of support from Barry and I value the various friendships I have made. I am so grateful to have been able to lead Barry as House Captain and to help continue to grow the beautiful Barry spirit.

I have always felt very supported at Normo, both by my teachers and friends. The conversations with my tutor reassured me of this constant support and helped me to make the most of my Loreto education. My teachers have always been very approachable, and I am very grateful for the friendships I made with them. Knowing that I have constant support from my peers and teachers instilled confidence in me to partake in many extracurricular activities.

Through sport, I gained many friendships and strengthened my leadership and teamwork skills. By participating in other various activities, such as JPIC (Social Justice Committee), I enhanced my understanding and execution of the Loreto values by advocating for those who don’t have a voice and trying to improve the world we live in.

Our Year 12 motto ‘Girls by Girls’ is about encouraging girls to work together and support each other. This helps to grow confidence, enabling students to be themselves, use their voice and make the most of Loreto’s opportunities. I saw the motto in action during sporting matches, carnivals and House activities when girls stood by each other and pushed each other on. I plan to apply the motto after school by sticking up for what I believe in and supporting those around me.

Overall, I think the best part of my Loreto education was learning the importance of working collaboratively. The relationships I formed helped me grow into a well-rounded person who values honesty, knowledge and friendship. I also found a passion for history which formed the majority of my subjects and I learnt the value of hard work through being challenged by my teachers.

The FACE curriculum (Faith, Academic, Community and Extra-curricular) challenged me to take on different opportunities which helped me gain confidence and leadership skills.

I found it very beneficial to have extracurricular activities outside academics, especially through sport as it gave me balance and helped with time management. I always felt proud to play for Loreto alongside my friends and throughout the years these activities formed some of my most memorable experiences of school.

The advice I would give to current Loreto girls would be to continue your interests outside of school,

choose subjects you are passionate about and really appreciate the friendships you make along the way.

Although there will be many ups and downs, maintaining perspective, keeping composed, and working together as a year group will all help in the long run.

I overcame the challenges of 2020 by trying to maintain perspective and see adversity as an opportunity for growth and to build stronger bonds with my year group, as I felt we all supported and encouraged one another. I also felt it helped to acknowledge and sit with the difficulties, and then move forward through resilience and adaptability, as well as having so much understanding from the school.

The 2020 Year 12 motto ‘Girls by Girls’ to me was about authenticity, respect, and support towards everyone. The message ‘Girls by Girls’ felt empowering as it reinforced the need for solidarity, and the importance of friendship and community. I think attending an all-girls school allows for an environment which empowers young girls to become independent, strong and supportive of one another.

Our foundress Mary Ward once wrote that ‘Women in time to come will do much’, and to me the 2020 Year 12 motto ‘Girls by Girls’ means that it now is women’s time to do much. In 2020 more than ever we have supported each other, and now need to keep that Loreto focus central as we enter the world. I saw this resolve in action every time I entered the school gates.

The best part of my Loreto education was the exposure it gave me to the world, and thus an accompanying passion for trying to make a difference in areas of injustice: whether they be social, economic or political.

From Year 7, cross-disciplinary projects in Integrated Learning provided me with greater perspective on ‘why’ we learnt and created a personal passion for social justice and activism.

As many of the Class of 2020 will end up working in professions that do not yet exist, a broad education has equipped me to adapt to any challenges or needs as they arise. I never thought that I would have had half of the amazing opportunities that I did: I was able to discuss Australia’s Constitution at a national convention, and visited the UN Office of the IBVM to discuss meeting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Loreto gave me passion, and the foundational abilities required to make change.

Barry House was the most encouraging, supportive, joyful community to be a part of while at school. To me, Barry House meant saying hello to everyone in our hallway and having the best chats outside our lockers.

From my first day at Loreto, the tutor group system allowed me to feel at home and looked after within the grounds. There was spoken and unspoken camaraderie. Having a tutor whom I saw everyday also made it easy to discuss challenges, and address concerns as they arose.

­ hroughout my years at Loreto, I learnt not to T put all my eggs in one basket, but to rather develop an intricate balance, so as to grow a knotted collection of values in each different area of the FACE Curriculum.

From Faith, I learnt trust; from Academics, grit; from Community, friendship; from Extra-curricular, determination.

Within each different area, I found different sources of support, allowing me to build a great network of connections that I could draw from.

Going into Year 11 and 12, I was passionate about taking agriculture as a subject for my HSC. In order to complete this subject, I had to study externally through Sydney Distance Education High School. Loreto really supported me through this, particularly the career advisors. They regularly checked up on my process, kept me so organised and coordinated with Distance Ed so I could focus my learning. It really did feel like I had multiple agriculture teachers, that’s how supported I was.

My advice to future Loreto girls is to get involved in as much extra-curricular as you can. When I was in Year 7 at the 2015 Athletics Trials, I distinctly remember a group of Year 12 students kindly approaching my timid Year 7 huddle and encouraging us to run the hurdles race “just for fun”. They demonstrated how to roughly jump the hurdles, all while having a great laugh with one another. We all completed the race, with only one scrap, and each felt accomplished at conquering the challenge. This race sparked my passion for athletics. In fact, I aim one day to represent Australia in hurdles, and wouldn’t have even given it a go without the ‘have a go’, inclusive Loreto attitude I learnt.

I would therefore encourage future Loreto girls to find an activity on offer that you are passionate about, or maybe even just remotely intrigued by, and give it a go! There is a strong chance you’ll meet someone with similar interests to whom you connect.

Take these friendships into the wider school community to build yourself a network. Don’t neglect extra-curricular as ultimately, by allocating time for recreation, your study will be hugely more productive.

Loreto Normanhurst’s holistic FACE curriculum (Faith, Academic, Community, Extra-curricular) and unique Loreto Normanhurst Student Growth Model allowed me to grow significantly over the course of my secondary education.

The faith opportunities I experienced, like becoming a Eucharistic Minister, allowed me to discern the Catholic tradition in the modern world.

Academically, Loreto offered extensive opportunities to enhance our learning beyond the classroom like Learning at Breakfast and various learning spaces to aid and encourage the collaborative learning that allowed the Class of 2020 to achieve such great HSC results.

The House community offers friendship, belonging and camaraderie. Maye House was a joyous, inclusive and fun environment, a sisterhood, where I felt a deep sense of belonging.

On House occasions such as the Music Festival and sporting carnivals, the spirit was contagious; an energy I will surely reminisce upon for years to come. Through tutor group and

the Tutor conversations creating one-on-one relationships, I kindled friendships with peers and teachers beyond academic and year-based scope.

Involvement in extra-curricular taught me the importance of commitment, dedication and resilience. My completion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award exposed me to an extensive range of challenges, particularly my community service involvement, allowing me to further my interpersonal skills. Competing for Loreto in the North West Equestrian Expo is the greatest highlight of my time at Loreto.

Before my first Expo in 2018, I was at a low point in my passion for riding after experiencing a confidence knock. Encouraged by my friends and coach, I competed and had such a great time with my horse and the friends I made.

The event (where I won my Combined Training) pushed me into competitive riding and drove me to dramatically improve.

For me, the 2020 ‘Girls by Girls’ motto means girls working together towards succeeding in common goals. The 2020 motto encapsulates the Loreto mission of liberating, responsible service and generosity which I saw in moments like the 2019 Loreto Day, when we girls came together to improve lives through the Zambia Baby Milk Project.

There are two aspects of my Loreto education that I will remember most. Firstly, my teachers from Year 7 to Year 12 were dedicated and enthusiastic, and I am grateful for the work they put into guiding my academic and pastoral growth. Secondly, over my time at Loreto, I have enjoyed countless experiences which have given me an insight into and empathy for the perspectives of others. I am grateful for opportunities like meeting Aboriginal communities in Far North Queensland; speaking with a survivor of the Holocaust at the Sydney Jewish Museum; visiting Auburn Gallipoli Mosque and travelling to Wisconsin and New York for Future Problem Solving.

Loreto’s FACE curriculum, encompassing Faith, Academic, Community and Extracurricular, provided me with the opportunity for personal growth beyond the academic.

For example, leadership on the House Council developed my appreciation for the value of community and developed my communication and organisational skills. Extra-curricular activities taught me how to manage my time and helped me to discover passions like debating and team sport. These skills, learnt within and outside of the classroom, will help me to adapt to life outside the school gates.

The benefits of attending an all-girls school are numerous, but I think at Loreto particularly, an all-girls education has fostered an intrinsically feminist culture.

Loreto created an invaluable sense of ‘sisterhood’ among Normo girls, and it was in this environment that I felt truly supported and encouraged.

I was especially empowered by my teachers to pursue academic achievement in all my subjects, and by the social justice ethos of the school to use my voice to speak up for the rights of women around the world.

My advice for current and future Loreto girls would be to take risks with your learning and your extra-curricular activities. Find an unconventional angle for your essay, choose subjects that will challenge you, and try an extra-curricular that you’ve never done before.

Throughout my time at Loreto, what stands out to me is the incredible commitment and care of our teachers. Undoubtedly, I would not have achieved academically without them, and they also help to support the wellbeing of all students. From generously volunteering extra time to give feedback on schoolwork to creating a positive, supportive learning environment in the classroom, my teachers helped to make my time at school more manageable, particularly in my HSC year, and my personal and academic goals more attainable.

I have left school with immense gratitude and incalculable appreciation for my teachers.

The pastoral focus of my House community in Mornane House also left an indelible mark on my growth as a person; regular conversations with my tutor allowed me to set goals, while time spent in tutor group enabled me to form strong, positive friendships with girls across each year group.

The Loreto community has a supportive climate in which girls are encouraged to pursue their passions. As a result, we are able to appreciate the valuable nature of female participation across all aspects of life - including sporting, academic and leadership achievements.

The 2020 motto ‘Girls by Girls’ reflected the commitment of our Year 12 cohort to engendering a school attitude whereby young women support each other to realise our collective and personal goals. In action, it meant celebrating the achievements of peers and reflecting on the powerful leadership of women within and beyond our own community.

My main piece of advice for current and future Loreto girls would be to study subjects you are passionate about and challenge yourself to give your absolute best to everything you choose to pursue. Not only will this make school more exciting, but it can also allow you to truly understand who you are and what you excel at. Embrace the process of learning, ask questions, take risks and be curious about what you are learning.

The highlight of my Loreto education was understanding female empowerment and reconciliation. By learning about Mary Ward’s vision of women receiving an adequate education, I understand that I am embodying one aspect of female empowerment through receiving a Loreto education.

Through my experiences, I also came to fully understand the inequities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and the root causes for such gaps.

As an Aboriginal woman from a rural town, I am eternally grateful to have received such a privileged education through my AIEF scholarship. This opportunity will guide me into tertiary education.

I initially found Boarding challenging to adjust to because of the magnificent difference between the small population of my primary school and the large one of Loreto. This feeling was soon overcome as I learnt many of my peers were in the same situation. After reflecting on the years, I smile when remembering the times when we gathered as a year group and created our own fun, whether that be creating a ‘salon’ in the dorm or playing sport on a Friday afternoon. I enjoyed the sense of community that the boarding school harnessed, particularly through events that are unique to Boarding such as the commitment weekends, Pink Lady dinners, Main

Event, and the boarder cruise. I deeply appreciate the hard work of the staff who were able to make my experience one to remember.

The best thing that happened to me as a boarder was being an academic mentor in Year 11 to a student in Year 9. This student was new and had been put into my tutor group. I wanted to be a ‘big sister’ to her and requested that I be her mentor when signing up. I am grateful that this request was granted as I could look out for this student both in the day and boarding schools as she started her journey at Loreto. The experience was rewarding as we learnt from one another and now have a unique friendship.

Future Loreto girls – be yourself.

Authenticity may make you feel vulnerable. However, this state of vulnerability is greater than trading in your authenticity for approval.

Although you are at school to receive an education, there are other aspects that should excite you so immerse yourself in the whole Loreto curriculum. Appreciate the work of your teachers and form unbreakable bonds with your peers.

Wellbeing was always at the forefront of everything that happened at Loreto. This worked to create a supportive and safe environment in which us girls were able to take on new challenges with the knowledge that the school was always behind us.

Pastoral Care activities in House Time or tutor time encouraged us to feel comfortable within the school gates and created a safe environment where we could become young women with the confidence to take on any challenge ahead.

The Boarding House at Loreto allowed us to feel as though we had a second family. The feeling of community and supportiveness within the Boarding House had a large impact on the positive experiences I had.

I was lucky enough to receive the Pink Lady Award during my last term which I was particularly proud of. Although my time in the Boarding House was short, I believe that I have been able to grow in confidence and independence with the support of the boarding staff and the other girls in my year group while creating amazing memories and friendships.

To me, our motto ‘Girls by Girls’ means to be there for one another during good times and bad times. It means encouraging other girls to give things a go and allow them to feel supported in doing so. Whether it be in the classroom or on the sporting field, each girl should have the confidence to do what they want to do. Throughout the year, there were times when I saw this motto in action, for example other girls coming to support on the sporting sidelines or everyone wishing each other well before our HSC exams. It was during these times I was proud to be a Loreto girl.

The small initiatives such as dress-up dinners or movie nights allowed us to come together and celebrate the special community. I loved that I was able to be around my friends all the time, whether it was just for a chat or for some help with homework.

I was supported and cared for at Loreto particularly through my relationships with my teachers and tutor group. My teachers were always happy to meet to discuss my academic progress and any challenging aspects of class topics. This ultimately prepared me for the HSC and gave me the opportunity to grow as an individual and learner. All of my teachers inspired my love for their subject and taught me valuable skills in thinking, research and writing. They challenged me to question and think critically and instilled within me a curiosity and love of learning. Through their encouragement I was able to discover my passion for history and law and will continue to study these areas at University.

Maye House was a spirited and vibrant community. It encouraged participation in all areas of school life and invoked a true sense of sisterhood. Tutor group was especially important to me as it allowed me to forge friendships across all year groups and acted as a great support system throughout my years of schooling. The Maye community is special to me as it taught me the value of compassion and generosity, which I seek to exemplify in my daily life.

Attending an all-girls school is beneficial in reinforcing the importance of women standing in solidarity with one another. Loreto recognises the importance of equipping girls with the necessary confidence to challenge and confront restrictive gender norms.

Loreto values nurture students’ academic and personal capabilities in order to create a legacy of strong and compassionate women.

‘Girls by Girls’ means supporting and building up women. It calls on women to be compassionate, merciful and understanding of the importance of kinship. This motto was particularly exemplified by my cohorts’ resilience and strength. The best thing I have experienced as a boarder is making friends with girls from all over Australia. This showed me the different experiences girls have faced in the country compared to me on the coast. Boarding resulted in my growth as a person as I have developed more courage to go out of my comfort zone. It exposed the importance of good relationships with those around you.

I was supported by my boarding friends and supervisors at Loreto especially in Year 12 as they were able to comfort me during times of stress. By living with my friends all the time, I had this constant support network that I could use to maintain strong mental health.

My Aston House community was also highly beneficial during my schooling as I had my tutor with whom I felt comfortable talking about any worries in my life. Tutor Group acted as a good break during the day which I could spend socialising and meeting new people.

Loreto Normanhurst has a positive learning environment with teachers who encourage enquiry in all areas of the FACE curriculum – Faith, Academic, Community and Extracurricular. It is an outward-looking school that encourages us to connect with life beyond ourselves and develop our engagement with social issues. We had many opportunities to contribute to worthwhile projects such as the annual Loreto Day. The House community gave me a sense of belonging from the start. The girls in my House became part of my Loreto journey as I got to know them in a supportive environment. Within the house system, I was able to learn from older girls and guide younger girls.

In boarding, I have had the privilege of growing up with a group of girls who bring their own uniqueness to boarding which is respected and celebrated. I really enjoyed boarding, with the highlights being downtime with friends, the support from supervisors and having the opportunity to meet others in a way that you really get to know them.

The holistic Loreto Normanhurst Student Growth Model and its FACE curriculum (Faith, Academic, Community, Extra-curricular) provided me with strong foundations as a life-long learner: the ability to collaborate with others; the importance of providing a balance in all aspects of my life; and an understanding of contemporary issues which has enabled me to reflect, explore and develop my faith through participation in social justice initiatives. I was taught how to take ownership of my own learning through reflection and conversation. I was constantly surrounded by supportive and encouraging teachers who were committed to helping me realise my potential.

The Pastoral Care program was responsive to current issues and relevant at each stage. It challenged me and gave me an understanding of who I am and who I want to be. I always felt appreciated for the gifts I have to share. The teachers took the time to get to know me.

Strong women leaders, both students and staff, became my role models and inspired me to strive to achieve personal excellence. There was always someone beside me to cheer me on and someone to encourage me if I felt like giving up. We could laugh together and we could cry together.

The highlight of my Loreto education was being involved in Community Service and Social Justice including FNQ, Year 11 Immersion and JPIC (Social Justice Committee). These experiences not only challenged me to step outside my comfort zone but they taught me about myself and that I have so much to offer. A Loreto education taught me to understand the need for change, to speak up with courage and compassion and to take action to respond to issues of social justice.

To the current and future Loreto girls - I was so proud to be a Loreto girl and loved every day. Be proud to be a Loreto girl. Not only has Loreto’s holistic approach to education broadened my understanding of what goes on beyond the school gates, it has also guided me on the start of my journey beyond high school as a strong, independent and competent Loreto woman. The extracurricular opportunities have alone helped me make life-long friends, develop critical problem solving and communication skills, as well as develop a passion for the performing arts.

Throughout my time at Normo I truly treasured being given the support and room to try new things without judgement. I found most of my support via the Pastoral Care team and always felt welcomed and validated whether it be through a quick chat with my tutor or with my Head of House.

I personally struggled with my confidence coming into high school, however the ability to try new subjects and extra-curricular activities allowed me to immerse myself in Loreto life and truly flourish. For example, in 2018 my team made it into the Future Problem Solving International in Wisconsin, where we came 11th in the world in our division. Just the opportunity to travel overseas and take part in such a competition, meeting and working with people from all walks of life, has enabled my outlook on life and on my education to be bettered and expand.

The highlight of my Loreto education would have to be the Far North Queensland Experience or ‘Outreach.’ I was truly able to come out of my shell and find a confidence in myself that not only transpired in my social relationships but allowed me to grow in my academics as well. It helped me participate in my passion for drama and singing after I was encouraged to sing at a liturgy and speak in front of our grade. Outreach pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me that I should not live with regret or guilt of not having done something, but rather take every opportunity offered to me and believe in myself.

I would encourage all Loreto girls to make the most of all the opportunities that are presented to them during their time at school.

Choosing subjects can be stressful, but my advice would be to select subjects that you are passionate about, which will make studying easier and more enjoyable. Loreto has a wealth of resources and incredibly dedicated staff, so it is important to ask for help and seek guidance when required.

Maintaining a positive attitude will help you to cope with the challenges of school life, and can greatly influence the outcome of your experience. Take the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of friends and cherish the experiences that you have together.

During my time at Loreto, I was constantly supported by my teachers and staff, who worked tirelessly to ensure that I was able to cope with the demands of Year 12. One specific example from my experience was the support that I received in learning and practicing Italian speaking before my HSC exam. Apart from my classroom teacher who instilled my passion for Italian within me, several other teachers including Ms Ugonotti, were extremely generous with their time and helped me to practice my speaking despite their own busy schedules.

The House communities at Loreto provided another vital dimension to school life. My house, Kuring-gai, was always filled with spirit and enthusiasm, which provided a space away from some of the academic pressures of school. The vertical tutor group system gave me the opportunity to connect with both younger and older students and expanded my social network. Over the years, I was able to develop leadership skills within the House community.

The Far North Queensland Experience for me was truly unique, and one of the most unforgettable and rewarding aspects of my time at Loreto.

It allowed me to escape the microcosm of my life at Loreto and instead, experience the broader world and develop strength and independence. The opportunities for self-reflection enabled me to focus on personal growth and assess my strengths and weaknesses.

Kendall House was incredible. It was, without a doubt, one of the highlights of my time at Loreto. Positivity and solidarity defined Kendall’s environment and each girl so strongly cared for their Kendall sisters. It was also an honour to lead Kendall in 2020 through Music Festival and Social Justice.

during this year’s Music Festival. Despite this muchloved traditional event being transformed to a virtual celebration, every girl still showed commitment and gave it their all. The final product was not only musically amazing, but a true reflection of the power that girls have when we are unified and share a common goal. This experience allowed me to appreciate what ‘Girls by Girls’ could achieve and will continue to inspire me to work with and befriend many other incredible women after school.

My Loreto education inspired in me a love for helping others. Loreto Day 2019 allowed me the opportunity to lead Year 11 and the school in raising money for the Baby Milk Project, Zambia. This project meant I had to dedicate lots of time and effort toward championing this cause and taught me that the most worthwhile things in life require constant devotion and drive, and that harnessing this motivation can improve the lives of others and make the world a better place.

Future Loreto girls – don’t be afraid to be ambitious.

Set targets for yourselves and work hard to achieve these goals. However, don’t let the years fly by savour the seemingly small and fleeting moments in life, because these little actions of kindness and love will keep you motivated when the going gets tough.

In our constantly changing and, at times, uncertain world, the values upon which Loreto Normanhurst is built really do encourage young women to become compassionate, socially responsible global citizens who were willing to act for change and make a meaningful contribution to the world.

Loreto allowed me to foster a love of learning, whereby I was encouraged to ask questions and to explore how I learn, not just to learn the content.

The curriculum was engaging and academically rigorous, as were the opportunities to immerse ourselves in extra-curricular pursuits. I enjoyed being able to make a contribution within the Loreto community and beyond, through a range of service and leadership initiatives. Our teachers were a constant source of inspiration, regularly challenging us to push the boundaries of our own learning as well as encouraging us to think critically.

The school goes to great lengths to ensure a diverse range of opportunities are offered and this allows each girl the chance to explore their individual interests and talents. I particularly enjoyed playing sport and representing Loreto Normanhurst. As I moved into my Senior years, the

option of social sport teams suited my motivations for involvement by allowing me to keep active, spend valuable time with my friends, and have a balanced approach to my studies.

I thoroughly enjoyed being a member of Aston House. It provided an automatic sense of belonging and affiliation which, as I moved from Year 7 through 12, took on a different significance for me. As a Senior, being a part of a House allowed you to play an active role in the leadership of the House. As a Junior student, it was a great sense of pride and a source of friendship.

Boarding at Loreto Normanhurst was an amazing experience. My favourite part of boarding was being part of a community where the support and care each of the boarders have for one another creates a homely and tight-knit environment, one where I feel comfortable to reach my full potential and be who I am. Boarding has also taught me to be empathetic, tolerant and have respect for others. I’ve learnt much from the experience of older girls as well as then becoming that older ‘sister’ to a younger girl. Whilst boarding can be challenging at times, there is always someone to look out for you, to lend you an ear or a shoulder to cry on, whether that be your friends, an older girl, or the supervisors.

A defining aspect of the Loreto environment is its holistic approach to student development.

This learning journey began for me in Year 7 with the introduction of Integrated Learning, which helped me develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Tutor conversations also built on this, by giving me regular opportunity to reflect on my goals and my progression within the FACE (Faith, Academic, Community and Extra-curricular) curriculum.

I feel that Loreto not only provided me with an academic environment, but encouraged me to participate in new opportunities, to be ambitious, explore my spirituality without pressure, teach me to be more empathetic and to be able to work with others. It has made me feel confident about my future and about achieving a healthy balance in my life, as well as becoming an independent woman.

I cannot overstate how much the House community of Mornane significantly influenced the person I have become.

It was this shared spirit and tenacious pursuit of common goals that created a tight-knit Mornane House community, much

like a family. This bond and the camaraderie only strengthened as I aged, and eventually I was lucky enough to lead Mornane.

Being able to witness and help grow House spirit, forging new connections between year groups, is a gift I will continue to treasure.

Extra-curricular opportunities taught me new skills, enabled me to form strong friendships and greater confidence, and offered an outlet from academic or personal worries. For example, the Mary Word student newspaper helped me refine my writing skills and pursue topics of conversation that I am passionate about, expanding my knowledge on current events. Sport taught me about the importance of teamwork and communication, and has instilled a discipline in me to always strive for more ambitious goals.

To all Loreto girls: don’t say “I can’t” and nurture the relationships you make at school.

Ultimately the thing that limits us is our fear, but Loreto has established a culture that if you dare to try, rewards will come. Plus, you have a role in ensuring that the lively Loreto spirit continues to thrive.

I felt constant support from many teachers throughout my time in Loreto, specifically my Head of House. Especially in Year 12, there were days that were tiring due to the pressures of the final high school year.

However, knowing that my Head of House’s door was always open, to have a talk and get advice always made me feel supported. I knew there genuinely was a teacher at school who not only wanted the best for me, but for all of Year 12.

Loreto never fails to make any and every girl feel like their opportunities are limitless. ‘Girls

by Girls’ meant to me that all girls should stand by each other, for each other, empowering one another and supporting each individual’s goals and dreams.

In a society that tends to pit powerful women against each other, Loreto allows girls to foster healthy and loyal relationships with one another.

‘Girls by Girls’ was prominent within Supergirl Week, the fifth of its kind at Loreto, organised by my SRC team. The week saw girls pushing themselves to play for their team in the Student vs Teacher relays, talk about issues they felt passionate about at Soapbox and praying for girls around the world who face injustices every day. My work for Supergirl Week allowed me to discover a passion for girl empowerment and helping girls around the world in accessing education, improving their rights and feeling as limitless as I do. The awareness raised at Loreto about environmental and social justice issues that Loreto has prepared me for a world where, in a position of privilege, I am able to make a change and really help those who face daily injustices.

My experience of being SRC/Communications Captain during my final year was a highlight for me. There were definitely challenges, but the community support and reactions to events made it worth it. I never thought I would speak in public, but in my role I made many speeches at assembly which allowed me to grow my confidence. The experience was so fun and eye-opening.

Girls by Girls Supergirl Week HSC 2020

“First Loreto. Then the world.”

Gian Ellis-Gannell: I plan to study undergraduate politics and postgraduate medicine, as I would like to support humanitarian aid efforts and work to meet international health goals. It is my dream to work with the United Nations or the World Health Organisation.

Greta Kraszula: My plans in 2021 are to study and play football in the USA in the NCAA Division I College system for VCU in Richmond, Virginia. I am interested in studying law, psychology or history and endeavour to work in a career in humanitarian work.

Charlotte Greenhalgh: I am starting a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws in 2021. Beyond that, I am not entirely sure what career path I will follow but I am excited to see how it unfolds!
