SRC Newsflash

Year 9 We were excited to get started on the Student Representative Council (SRC) this year and to contribute to improve our College in as many ways possible.

This year, we, the SRC Year 9 reps noticed some of the current lockers were not in very good shape. With the help of College groundsman Mr Onions we were able to get most of them fixed. We did this promptly so the girls could start to use their lockers without such a hassle.

The SRC also got some locks on the Babylon toilet doors which had appeared to be missing one of their halves at the beginning of the year.

We are also planning to organise some year group activities, especially on the long lunches coming into Term 2. There are many big events we are planning currently with the other SRC leaders for other year levels. These events include a Walk for Water Day and Assembly Row activities. One of these activities will also include the trivia competition.

After Term 1 being such a success we couldn’t wait to get back and start organising great things to keep the girls entertained and involved in Term 2.

Year 10 As the SRC representatives for Year 10, we can gladly say that everything is on track for a great year. We have outlined initiatives and goals have been set so 2013 can be an enjoyable year. So far, the SRC as a whole, has discussed many improvements and initiatives to be put in place around the school. During our meetings, the SRC have been working hard on ideas for the Walkathon later this year as well as discussing and implementing new College merchandise. As a year level, we have suggested many ideas including students making a classroom Justice banner to both brighten our classrooms and form a collective College justice banner.

Throughout the term we have also made basic improvements to our homerooms to make them a more enjoyable place for everyone. We look forward to the exciting year ahead and the further goals and activities we strive to achieve.

Year 12

Year 11 This term has been a whirlwind of activity for the Year 11 reps. From our very first meeting we have been occupied with learning the ropes, getting to know our fellow student reps and addressing issues brought up by our peers. We, the Year 11 reps, were tasked with developing some new merchandise for the College to provide a memento of Loreto and encourage school spirit. We decided a fun way to achieve this would be through selling ‘Jerry’ key rings. The organisation for these key rings is going well and we are looking forward to distributing them early next term. One privilege we were afforded as student reps this term was the exciting opportunity to listen to Kevin Rudd speak on leadership at the Coorparoo Bowls Club. This oration was targeted at Year 12 leaders, however due to a schedule clash with the Year 12 Retreat, we attended on behalf of the College. We met many interesting leaders from Southside schools and received a lot of valuable firsthand experience which will undoubtedly help us not only in Year 11 but in whatever role we play as seniors.

Thanks to some contributions and suggestions from our grade, we also have a number of improvements we are willing to try to achieve next term, such as looking at alternatives to school text books.

The SRC has kick started Term 1 with plenty of exciting initiatives. Many of these focussed on building cohesiveness amongst the five year levels. The first way we are aiming to implement this is to hold the inaugural Loreto Walkathon on the last day of Term 3, Friday 20 September. The day will focus on raising awareness for women who are made to walk kilometres in order to gather water for their families in developing countries, as well as raising funds to support this cause. Keep an eye out for further information surrounding this day as well as information about sponsorship.

Coming up in Term 2, the SRC will be running activities during assembly in Week 5, aiming to strengthen relationships within assembly rows. We hope that the bonds formed within assembly lines will carry on after this day.

We are planning to create a banner which will celebrate 85 years of Loreto Coorparoo. To create this banner, each grade will be allocated a Mary Ward virtue. In homeroom groups, the girls will then create a visual representation of this virtue, and the best five will be chosen to form the main banner. We hope that this initiative will be successful in celebrating 85 years of our school, as well as creating an environment for the girls to work together.

We hope all of these initiatives will be a success and are looking forward to a great year ahead.
