Volume 28 - 9 September, 2014 Dear Parents and Students Dear God, We celebrate spring’s returning and the rejuvenation of the natural world. Let us be moved by this vast and gentle insistence that goodness shall return, that warmth and life shall succeed, and help us to understand our place within this miracle. Let us see that as a bird now builds its nest, bravely, with bits and pieces, so we must build human faith. It is our simple duty; it is the highest art; it is our natural and vital role within the miracle of spring: the creation of faith. Amen. Michael Leunig. “When I talk to You”. It is with great pleasure I announce that the name of our new building is “Cruci”. This name of course comes from the Loreto crest itself “Cruci Dum Spiro Fido” which is Latin for As Long as I live and breathe, I put my trust in the Cross. Cruci means Cross. The cross signifies an understanding of the centrality of Christ in our lives and to our mission. In the words of the School Hymn “This is our boast, the Cross of Christ. This is the hope to which we’re called.” The process of choosing the name for this building commenced with the Student Representative Council in 2013. They held a “competition” which was open to all members of the community, inviting names to be submitted that were “relevant to Mary Ward’s friends or her story, the history of Loreto Coorparoo or the Loreto Australia Story”. In all there were 33 submissions received from students, staff and past pupils. These suggestions were duly considered by the SRC this year who made recommendations to the School Council. The School Council in turn sought endorsement from the Loreto Sisters. We congratulate Emily Smallhorn (Class of 2013) on the selection of her submission. With the cross being such a prominent feature of the wall facing Cavendish Road, Cruci seems to be a most fitting and appropriate name to have as an entry point to the College. I sincerely thank the SRC for their interest and involvement. As you will no doubt have seen, the building is rapidly nearing completion. The official opening will be held early next term on Sunday 19 October at 2.30pm (immediately prior to “Live & Wired” which begins at 3.00pm on the Deshon Oval.) Cruci will thus be open to interested visitors from 3.00pm to 5.00pm on Sunday 19 October.

I hope that you are able to come along and enjoy both a walk-through our new learning space and an afternoon of relaxation on the oval as you take in the vibrant musical entertainment of “Live & Wired”. In the weeks following the Opening, the Year 11’s will move out of Mulwith and into Cruci so that we can begin to remodel the Mulwith learning spaces to make them ready for Year 7’s next year. These are indeed busy and exciting times. I thank you for your ongoing interest, support and patience. CONDOLENCES 

To Tania Mangifesta (Year 10) whose Grandfather, Carlo, passed away last week. May he rest peacefully in God’s loving care. Amen.

To Isabella Lovenitti (Year 10) whose Grandfather, Evandro, passed away recently. We pray for his eternal peace in God’s loving care. Amen.

To Mr Chris Jones and his family on the sudden passing of his father-in-law. May he rest eternally in God’s peace. Amen.

Not continuing in 2015? Reminder of Student Withdrawal Policy As the end of another year draws near, families are asked to notify the College, at your earliest convenience, if your daughter(s) will not be continuing at Loreto College in 2015. Families are reminded of the College’s student withdrawal policy requiring one term’s notice in writing of any intention to withdraw a student from the College. Formal notice is to be given no later than the first day of Term 4. In default of such notice, one term’s fees will be required. Your assistance with this communication is paramount so 2015 classes can be finalised before the end of year and appropriate positions can be offered to girls on our current waiting list. If your daughter will not be continuing in 2015 please notify the Enrolments and Communications Manager, Ms Emma Beach at enrol@loreto.qld.edu.au or phone the office on 3394 9999 by the first day of Term 4. Thank you.

Music News The Lion King Senior Music students, don’t forget that we have booked tickets to see the Lion King in Term 4 this year. The Year 12 class will be attending on Wednesday 22 October and the Year 11 class will be attending on Thursday 6 November. Could students and their parents please take careful note of these dates. All extra tickets that were advertised in last week’s newsletter have now been allocated – it’s great to see so much interest in this fantastic show! Music Extension Recital The students from this year’s Senior Music Extension class will be performing their assessment in a public concert on Thursday 9 October (first week back next term). This fantastic concert will start at 6pm on the Mary Ward Centre stage and run for approximately 90 minutes. Come along and support the girls as this is always a high quality event! Ben Langford - Coordinator of Music

Year 9 Parent Information Night - Wednesday 8 October On 8 October your daughter will be participating in a Personal Development day run by S.E.E.D - Self Esteem Education and Development. To maximise the success of this day for your daughter, your attendance at the parent workshop will be invaluable. The parent workshop is on 8 October and is being held in the Mary Ward Centre at 7pm. Please mark your diary or calendar now and we look forward to seeing you then. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Kirsty Gore - Year 9 Coordinator

Music News Ensemble Auditions for 2015 This year we are asking that all students in Years 8 -11 submit their Audition Forms online! The link to this google form was emailed at the end of last week directly to all parents of students who are currently in Music Ensembles. We would ask that the all forms are submitted by this coming Friday 12 September. If you have not received the email, or your daughter is not currently in a group but would like to audition for one for 2015, you can access the Audition Form by following this link: docs.google.com/forms/d/1SE5Aqh1K6NnpkpIhgUmFuNeYTFeYe6ttqmvZtEqiGlI/viewform?c=0&w=1&usp=mail_form_link

Ensemble Rehearsals during exams With exams coming up this week, there will be a number of cancellations and changes to the regular ensemble rehearsal program to allow students appropriate time to prepare for important assessments. However, we cannot cancel rehearsals both during exam block as well as leading into this period, and many rehearsals, particularly for younger students, will begin again while the Senior exam block is ongoing. Please carefully check the end-of-term rehearsal Schedule on Page 6 for these changes. Important Loreto Ensemble policies To both maximise opportunity for participation and maintain the highest possible musical quality, Loreto Music runs four core music ensembles – Concert Band One, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble One and Senior Choir. Participation in the College’s Ensemble Program is based on the presumption that every student who chooses to be involved would be a member of either one of these four groups or its appropriate supporting ensemble (eg. Junior Choir, Guitar Ensemble Two). Participation in advanced ensembles (eg. Flute Ensemble One, Chorale, Big Band) then provides extension for students who are already members of the appropriate core, or supporting, groups. Participation in the Ensemble program provides many benefits for students, including but not limited to the social interaction with other girls who share similar interests, building team working skills, developing appreciation for the aesthetics of the arts, and practising core academic skills that cross subject boundaries. For all this to be possible, a certain level of commitment from students and parents is required. Students need to attend ensemble rehearsals regularly, continue to develop their individual playing skills through taking lessons on their instrument and make time to learn their ensemble music at home. This preparation then leads to several performances each year and it is obvious that no student group can play at its best unless all members of that group are present at these performances. The most important events at which ensembles perform each year are our Autumn Concerts (each group will play at one of these), the Music Night and Live & Wired Music Festival in Term Four (again each group plays at one or the other), and the Catholic Colleges Music Festival in August. Dates for these concerts will be published in the school newsletters at the very start of each academic year. The College’s expectation is that members of music ensembles would take note of event dates when they are published in the school newsletter and make themselves available to perform, even in preference to non-school (eg. sporting/dance) commitments. Key Dates for Term Four Please make sure you have the following dates in your diaries! Music Extension Recital: Thursday 9 October 6pm to 7:30pm; Live & Wired Music Festival: Sunday 19 October 3pm to 7pm (with performances by Big Band, Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Curricular Bands and Improvised Jazz Ensemble); Music Night: Friday 31 October 6pm to 9pm (all Loreto Ensembles who do not perform at Live & Wired); Villanova Big Event: Friday 7 November with dress rehearsal on Thursday 6 November (Orchestra, Senior Choir); Graduation Mass: Friday 21 November (Senior Choir, Selected Junior Choir members and instrumentalists); Mass at the Cathedral of St Stephen: Sunday 2 November 9am to 11:15am (Senior Choir). Senior Choir & Orchestra Please note that in preparation for the Big Event concert at Villanova, we will be running a full day rehearsal on Monday 20 October (this is a student free day so no school classes will be missed). For Senior Choir, we will also ask you to attend a rehearsal on Monday 3 November INSTEAD of your regular Tuesday rehearsal on 4 November that week. Music Support Group Our next Meeting is next week, Wednesday 10 September and we will be finalising organisation for the Mega Raffle and Live & Wired. It would be fantastic to see some new music parents Ben Langford - Coordinator of Music

P&F News New Events for Parents The AGM was adjourned last Tuesday due to a lack of a quorum. The adjournment left more time for the regular meeting which heard about proposals arising from the recent Parent Forum including new events in 2015. Some proposals under consideration are: 

Parent Panel –parents and older students give short presentations to share their experiences about the year levels that other students are about to enter

Signature Events – guest speakers talk about important issues related to students’ education and development

Parent Support Group – volunteers assist parents in need

These events will be incorporated into a P&F calendar which will align with school events and be promoted early in 2015. We plan to use multiple channels (email, website, newsletter etc) to communicate with parents about these and other matters. You will hear more details as plans are developed. State Member for Greenslopes Ian Kaye attended the meeting and spoke about a number of matters including the redevelopment of the Myer site at Coorparoo Junction and plans to install flashing lights outside schools. The next meeting will be the final one for the year on Tuesday 28 October when the proceedings will begin with the AGM.
