RECENT AND FUTURE CURRICULUM CHANGES AT LORETO In response to feedback received from parents, students and staff in the Whole School Surveys of 2011 and 2013 we have sought to improve the range of subjects offered to students at the various stages of schooling.

After appropriate planning and resourcing we were able to introduce Legal Studies, Extension English, Creative Arts and Certificate III & IV in Fitness to our Senior year students in 2013. These subjects have been well received, meeting both need and interest. In 2014 we also added Graphics and this too has been well received. In 2015 we will add Hospitality as well. These improvements to the curriculum offerings (six subjects) have been implemented as a direct result of your feedback. Thank you. I thank the Academic Coordinators and teaching staff for their support in implementing these changes and Mr Pat Elsworthy, Deputy Principal – Curriculum especially for his leadership in this regard.

Looking forward, 2015 also presents us with an opportunity to offer Year 9 students a greater number of electives for study across Years 9 and 10. This will be possible due to a change in the way we will structure our timetable. Students entering Year 9 next year have thus been invited to choose three electives, where previously the timetable constraints restricted them to only two electives. As they move into Year 10 in 2016 they will also be given a greater range and further flexibility in their choices. This important change will further assist them in choosing appropriate pathways for their senior schooling and beyond.

The other change of note in 2015 will be the introduction of a fourth language (Chinese) at Years 7 and 8. This will mean that the students in future will have two European and two Asian languages from which to choose one language going into Years 8, 9 and 10. Again, this improvement has been made possible through a change to our timetable structure which we are making in 2015.

Flexischools Loreto Tuckshop News The tuckshop has been operating very successfully using Flexischools since the beginning of Term 3.

Students are able to access food and drink far more readily because lines move much more efficiently and quickly using this card operated system. We would highly recommend taking advantage of the Online Ordering facility which speeds up this process even more. You pay online and your daughter simply collects her lunch without even having to use her card.

Some students have had some small issues but these are generally due to some minor errors that occurred when the Flexischools account and card were first setup. If you are setting up an account for the first time, or your daughter has had some issues, we have some hints for you on how to fix these.

1.

Ensure you link your daughter’s Loreto ID card to the account you have setup. When you link the card number you must use your daughter’s student number which begins with an ‘s’ for student eg. s1477323. Please use a lower case ‘s’ at the beginning of the student ID number.

2.

If you set a daily cash limit on this account your daughter will not be able to purchase anything that goes over this limit. You may like to review the tuckshop menu before you set this limit. If you do an online order this limit does not apply.

3.

There also needs to be sufficient funds in your Flexischools’ account if your daughter is to be able to buy from the tuckshop. You may consider enabling an auto top on your account once it reaches a certain level to alleviate this problem.

If you are having issues with your daughter using her card then it is best to contact the excellent help desk service that Flexischools offer by ringing 1300 361 769 or via their website www.flexischools.com.au Just a reminder that we are moving to a cashless tuckshop by the start of Term 4, 2014 so we would encourage you to look at setting up a Flexischools account this term to prepare for this transition.

Art Department The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art is an annual event which recognises and promotes excellence in senior visual art education throughout Queensland state and non-state schools. The 2014 Metropolitan Regional Exhibition of the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art is currently at the Ipswich Art Gallery and features the works by 175 students from 58 local schools. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to have their work professionally hung and on display for public viewing. Loreto College is represented by; Marcie Bakker, The Immortal Companion; Madeleine Lloyd, I Carry the Plenum of Proof on My Face; Erin Stafford, Fragile Fragments and Sheridan Tully, Endowment. These girls are to be congratulated on the selection of their work to be hung in an exhibition which represents such a high standard of work.

Marcie Bakker also received a Certificate of Commendation. The Ipswich Art Gallery is open daily between 10am and 5pm and the exhibition runs until September 7. Their art work is displayed on the following page.

English News This Friday September 5, forty-five Year 9 girls are attending the Brisbane Writers Festival at the Cultural Precinct at Southbank. They will attend three sessions from the following authors: Isobelle Carmody, Sean Williams, A. J. Betts, Will Kostakis, Ananda Braxton- Smith, Omar Musa and Scott Sneddon.

The girls will wear their day uniform and bring their hats. The girls are to bring a small bag with their morning tea and lunch, as well as a drink if they want one. There are water bubblers for the girls to fill water bottles if they wish. The girls will be in the Cultural Precinct for the day and will not be permitted to go beyond this area. There will be books for sale and if girls wish to purchase a book, they may bring money for this purpose. Mobile phones may be carried, but as per school rules, in their pockets, switched off.

We will depart the College at 8.30am sharp and we ask the girls to be in the Undercroft at 8.20am so that we can mark the roll and get organised. They will not go to Home Room. The girls will return in time for Period 6 and so they are asked to bring work for this.

Music News Congratulations To all the students who performed at last week’s Lunchtime Recitals! They were both very enjoyable concerts showcasing the talent of some of the students taking private tuition at Loreto.

The Lion King Senior Music students, don’t forget that we have booked tickets to see the Lion King in Term 4 this year. The Year 12 class will be attending on Wednesday 22 October and the Year 11 class will be attending on Thursday 6 November. Could students and their parents please take careful note of these dates. All extra tickets that were advertised in last week’s newsletter have now been allocated – it’s great to see so much interest in this fantastic show!

Science Department The Loreto Science Department is, as always, buzzing with activity. Our Year 8s are learning all about cells and microscopes, the Year 9s are tackling Chemistry while our Year 10s are about to embark on a unit in Astronomy. In Physics, our senior class is studying thermodynamics and the Year 11s are delving in to the mind bending world of special relativity. Our Year 11 chemists are looking at fossil fuels while the Year 12 Chemistry students are busy constructing electrochemical cells. The Year 11 Biology students have just completed an Extended Experimental Investigation on the activity of enzymes and the Year 12s are currently exploring genetics. While this is all happening, we are busy planning some exciting units ready for the arrival of Year 7 next year.

The Science Experience is a three day hands-on science activities program for Year 9 and 10 students being held at UQ, Griffith Uni and QUT over the September or Christmas holidays. It is a great opportunity for any student who would like to explore a possible future in the Sciences. For more information, visit http://www.scienceexperience.com.au/ .

Students in Year 11 or 12 who are interested in a career in Engineering are invited to attend the University of Queensland’s Explore Engineering Day (hosted by the Women in Engineering program). It will be held on Tuesday 16 September at the Advanced Engineering Building on the St Lucia campus.

Year 11 English Literary The Mayne Inheritance Tour: Kangaroo Point, CBD and University of Queensland The view was magnificent. All of a sudden I felt so small, like a spec of dust being blown from the cliff faces of Kangaroo Point, and peacefully drifting through the concrete jungle I call home. The city sounds overwhelm me; I look up and see the remains of old buildings that have now been renovated into stores, stretching right through Queen Street Mall. It does make you wonder what Brisbane was like before us: before the buskers, the smells of coffee shops, the sounds of high heels and the suffocating intoxication of tobacco smoke everywhere you turn. I ponder about my purpose in this progressive city, the city I call home. - Mikaela Crone

The Brisbane Arcade Abundance of high-end retail stores were scattered with fur coat covered- handbag holding- women. Exquisitely designed pillars. Intricate framework. Chessboard tiles beneath our aching and exhausted feet.

The bustling nature of the Brisbane Arcade was met with 52 red-faced and hungry schoolgirls; the fiery longing for an oversized city meal being extinguished and replaced with a stunned sense of amazement.

Mouths wide open. Shiny eyes feeling each stitch of the expertly crafted wedding dresses. We saw a beautiful woman, emanating true happiness reflected in her glistening eyes while a short, suited man fussed around the shop, clinging to veils and tape measures.

Suddenly, the atmosphere changed. Two words had been uttered between teachers and ears pricked. Students were set pacing through the Brisbane Arcade, hustling and jostling their way around the fur coat covered, handbag holding women and the exquisitely designed pillars, ignoring the intricate framework, chessboard tiles blurring beneath feet. What dreadful ordeal could have possibly been announced? “Lunch Time” - Georgia Johnson Nestled below the Story Bridge is the serene Captain Burke Park that has been marred by the dark history of the Mayne family. The murder and theft of Robert Cox at what is now the family orientated parklands was the beginning of the Mayne Fortune. Vibrant green grass encroaching on the river shore provides a lush carpet for the playing children and alfresco dining families.Amongst a concrete jungle, Captain Burke Park is a small inner city pocket of urban green space. As a dark silhouette of the Story Bridge is cast over the parklands, it is stark reminder of the Brisbane Underbelly. - Grace Capelli

The icy breeze of the Brisbane River bites through the air beneath the Story Bridge.

The squawking of birds along the dock mixed in with the light crashing of waves creates an eerie symphony of natural noise, contrasting with the heavy and foreign rolling of trucks and cars above. The thousand tonne metal monstrosity above my head looks awkward and out of place amongst the abundance of mangroves and wildlife below, yet has become an icon within Brisbane. Murky clouds of water within the river reflected the industrialism and pollution that the bridge represented, a once beautiful natural landmark reduced to a location avoided by most. - Laura Maher Yungaba House Beginning our walk next to the Brisbane River, the sun shone bright and strong upon our shoulders as our scrubby school shoes followed the well-kept path beside the river. The river, only a few footsteps to our right, glistened under the sun’s glowing haze as it twisted and turned, keeping close to the path that led beyond our teachers’ instructions on where to cease walking. Arriving at the front of the Yungaba house, the small freshly trimmed patch of grassland looked a vibrant green when compared to the dull grey of the footpath it lined, and the house itself a small piece of guarded history surrounded by the tall, highly developed apartment blocks that covered the area. The mass of blue uniforms took a seat on the well-kept grass as the teachers spoke of the history the house that was at our backs, of the immigrants that were once housed here. Whilst sitting, we could see that in the distance there were faded green park benches we wished to sit on as the walking had become too much for some. Or that unlike us, the continuous flow of exercisers, who didn’t mind walking, running or biking, passed us as they went upon their daily routine, paying no attention to the school girls sitting on the grass. One could also see the many trees, bushes and hedges that lay in front of us only partially covering the large Story Bridge in the distance, all the while hoping the walking would not last much longer, and that lunch was coming soon. - Rachael Stafford

Co-Curricular Music Ensemble Rehearsals during exams With exams coming up very soon, there will be a number of cancellations and changes to the regular ensemble rehearsal program to allow students appropriate time to prepare for important assessments. However, we cannot cancel rehearsals both during exam block as well as leading into this period, and many rehearsals, particularly for younger students, will begin again while the exam block is ongoing. Next week’s newsletter will contain a full list of changes – could I please ask that parents and students take careful note of these and make sure they attend any rehearsals that remain scheduled?

Sports Department Water Polo - 2014/2015 A reminder for all girls who wish to trial for the upcoming Water Polo Season 2014/2015 - please register your interest online by 4 September ( you would have received an email with the link last week). 

7 September from 4.30 - 6.00pm there will be trials for all Loreto girls and prospective Loreto girls interested in playing for the Loreto Warriors teams (U13, U14, U15, U16, U18) for 2014/15.



They will take place at Clem Jones Pool, Zahel St, Carina.



Please bring swim cap, goggles, water bottle, sunscreen, towel and togs.

There will be a qualified Senior coach who will conduct various drills, and a swim set, to determine skill levels.

CaSSSA Athletics On Monday 25 August, our Loreto athletics team competed at the annual Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls Sports Association Track and Field competition at QEII Athletics Stadium. Congratulations to Sarah Novic and Melissa Roberts for their work as Track and Field Captains for the day. A special thank you to Year 11 spectators and teachers for their support. Overall Loreto were placed 3rd in the percentage trophy and 5th Overall in the CaSSSA Cup. This was due to hard work at training and at the UQ Athletics meets. Congratulations to the Athletes who competed on the day as well as our reserves. I would like to thank the parents who assisted at the Lead up Meets and Mr Jones and Ms Begley for their officiating at the CaSSSA event.

P&F News New Events for Parents A number of exciting new proposals aimed at increasing engagement with and support for parents will be discussed when the P&F holds its second last meeting for the year tonight. These initiatives arose from the recent Parent Forum, which is one of the key items on the agenda for the meeting. The evening is scheduled to begin at 7pm with the annual general meeting if we have a quorum. Even if sufficient people don’t attend, a regular meeting will be held in Room 605 on the bottom floor of the Gonzaga Barry Building at this time. Without a quorum tonight, those attending the October meeting will vote to determine who holds the positions of President, Vice-president (2), Treasurer and Secretary for the next 12 months.

All are welcome so if you have never attended a P&F meeting before, please make this your first.

Father’s Day Breakfast At the meeting we’ll also discuss arrangements for this important annual event which will held between the Mary Ward Centre and swimming pool at 7am on Friday.
