Volume 16 - 26 May, 2015 Dear Parents & Students Pentecost Prayer 2015 For the Lord has come to his people, and the earth trembles with joy, the Father is kindling his fire on the earth, the Son is roving with life in his touch, the Spirit is rising though we are falling. (Peter Steele SJ “If you watch”)

God of life and Spirit of courage Touch the hearts of the wounded and oppressed that they may be healed and restored to fullness of life. Touch the minds of the powerful so they may see that peace can only come through justice given today. Touch the hearts and minds of those with the responsibility to vote for change and speak the truth, that moved with compassion we will work to create a future that is just, inclusive and equitable, beginning today. We make our prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.

NATIONAL DAY OF HEALING AND NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK Today, May 26, is our National Day of Healing (National Sorry Day). This is a day when we as Australians remember our own Indigenous people, the Stolen Generations, forcibly removed from their families as a result of government policies. Today we are called to work together for healing and reconciliation. During National Reconciliation Week (celebrated each year from 27 May – 3 June) we commemorate two significant points in the journey of reconciliation – the anniversaries of the successful 1967 Referendum and the High Court Mabo decision on Native Title. “At the heart of these events is the connection to land and, depending on one’s culture, its importance. For Indigenous people, connection to land is vital to survival. It is not just a “lifestyle choice” but “life”.

The effects of the Referendum and Mabo are still felt, not only by Indigenous people, but by the whole Australian society. It is with mixed feelings that we commemorate these events and, in many cases, with little understanding of the experience of the First Australians. The history of the treatment of the Australian Indigenous people by the first settlers and consecutive Australian governments has also been mixed – difficult and uncomfortable for Australians to face. But whether we like it or not, most of us have benefitted from their dispossession.” Sr Janet Palafox ibvm. To read more visit http://loreto.org.au/news/national-day-of-healing-and-national-reconciliation-week/ CONGRATULATIONS To the following two students who were each presented with Loreto Charms on last week’s assembly as they will soon be travelling overseas to represent their State and/or Australia in different sports. 

Tiaan Smith (Year 10) travels to New Zealand playing in the Australian U17 Volleyball team; and

Jessica Galpin (Year 11) travels to Los Angeles in the US as a member of the U17 emerging Queensland State Basketball team.

We wish each of them great success knowing that they will be wonderful ambassadors for Loreto.

To Loreto’s Team Innovation who came Third at the QUT Blueshift competition on Saturday. The team comprising Nicole Hodge, Isabelle Orazio, Brittany DiSavia and Jemima Reid (Year 11’s) did extremely well given the high level of competition from schools across Queensland and New South Wales.

BEST WISHES 

To the Loreto Cross Country Team who will be competing in the CaSSSA Carnival this Friday. We wish them every success as we again defend our title as winners of the Cross Country Percentage Trophy.

CONDOLDENCES 

To Georgia Williams (2015) and Catherine Williams (2011) on the recent sudden passing of their Grandfather, Earl Rawlings. We pray for them and their family at this time of loss. We also pray that their Grandfather rests eternally lovingly in God’s eternal peace. Yours sincerely Cheryl Hamilton Principal

POTENTIAL FOR HARM – Social Media site Ask.Fm and others I wish to repeat concerns expressed in previous newsletters about the potential for significant harm in the “teen/tween” use of free social media sites such as ask.fm; tumblr; formspring and snapchat. The ask.fm site in particular causes me great concern because it is used by users to post questions about themselves, or to others, and wait for replies and responses. This sounds innocuous enough, however, what this site lacks is the critically important privacy controls of other mainstream sites and the replies and responses can be completely anonymous. In terms of cyber-safety this site provides users with an ‘open-door’ to cause and/or receive psychological harm. The ‘openness’ of this site’s access also means that non-users can easily link in to an individual’s postings via a simple Google search using the user’s name and ask.fm together.

A quick exploration of the site reveals that many young users post inappropriate images of themselves; engage in ‘risky’ profiling and discussion; use offensive language and imagery; and get drawn into negativity which can spiral. It is vital on such sites that students do not refer to their school and/or give other personal information as this information can be used to track and trace individuals. The school does not wish to be linked in any way to the ask.fm site and the associated posts. Students who refer to Loreto on this site, via their any comments or postings, are in breach of our expectations and policies. I ask that all students remove any references to Loreto and also encourage them to disable their activity on this and other similar sights, urging them rather to be young women of sincerity, verity, felicity and hope. I ask all parents to please consider your daughter’s social media activity and her cyber-safety. Helen Carty - Deputy Principal - Pastoral Care

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on Students with Disability (NCCD) From 2015, all schools across Australia are taking part in the implementation of a new national data collection on school students with disability. The data will provide information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the level of adjustments they receive. The information provided through this new national data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources to benefit students with disability. Better information about school students with disability will help teachers, principals and education authorities to put the right supports in place for students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability. Information will be recorded in such a way that no child can be identified. Student names will not be collected. Inclusion in the data collection is voluntary. If you wish your young person to be excluded from this, you can choose to opt-out of the data collection by informing the school in writing. Click on the following website link to access the factsheet on the Information for Parents/Carers. https://docs.education.gov.au/system/files/doc/other/nationally_consistent_data_collectionparents_and_carers_version_no_2.pdf Please contact Mrs Ruth Goldney on 3394 9999 for any additional information or concerns about the process.

Geography News The South Bank Connection……. Last Monday, Year 7 Blue and Gold undertook their first integrated field trip to South Bank and its surrounds, as part of their studies for Art, English and Geography. The students gathered data through all of their senses on their walk between Kurilpa Bridge and the City Botanic Gardens, in a bid to inspire creativity. In addition to having the opportunity to listen to indigenous storyteller “Uncle Joe” convey a number of tales about the Brisbane River, the students were also actively involved in sketching and photographing various features, which helped them see South Bank and the surrounds in a very different light. Not only was it a very productive day, but it was also a most enjoyable and fun day. We commend the students on their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm, making it a very worthwhile experience. We would also like to thank the staff who assisted on the day, including Ms Gallen, Mrs Dawes, Mrs McKeown, Mrs Williams, Mrs Davidson, Mrs Hamlet and Ms Runge. We now look forward to seeing what the students gained from the day as it becomes illustrated in their respective tasks. Leonie McCulkin, Catherine O’Donoghue and Diane Hanson - Art, English and Geography Curriculum Leaders

Drama News Junior Drama Club On Monday 18 May, our Year 7 students performed short scripts to an audience of peers and family. It was obvious how much the girls enjoyed the experience and the depth of talent we have here at Loreto. Thank you to the parents for being a very attentive audience and to Mrs Anna Neilson, Year 7 Coordinator, for her support. On Monday, 25 May the Year 8 students will have the opportunity to showcase their acting skills. The audience is welcome to arrive at 4.45pm, performances will begin at 5pm and the running time is approximately one hour in Room 411. This performance will conclude Junior Drama Club for 2015. Thank you to our Year 12 Drama Council who have provided an amazing weekly experience for our younger students. Theatre Production Weekly workshops are now underway as Drama students in Years 10 -12 begin shaping dramatic action and developing characterisation for our commissioned script. Playwright, Victoria Carless, will meet with the girls on Friday, 29 May in Room 411 from 3.30pm – 5.30pm for a guided reading of the first draft.

Year 12 Formal

When: Saturday 18 July, 2015 Venue: Grand Ballroom, Hilton Hotel, Elizabeth Street, City Time:

7.00-11.30pm

The Year 12 students are looking forward to their Formal with eager anticipation. This will be a special occasion for the seniors and certainly a highlight of their final year at the College. A letter has already gone home about the evening and our expectations to ensure a happy, safe and memorable evening is had by all. Tickets can be purchased via www.trybooking.com/hrwc and payment needs to be completed by Friday 5 June. The girls have been fully briefed about behaviour (which extends to partners) and we ask that parents support us by escorting their daughters and partners to the venue at 7.00pm and then picking them up at 11.30pm. No one will be allowed to leave the venue before this time. We again remind you that the girls do not need additional forms of transport to get them to and from the venue. As you are aware, the College does not support the girls attending ‘post parties’. If this was to occur, we urge you to ensure planned and careful supervision as the safety of the girls is paramount. It is timely to remind parents about the issue of alcohol consumption by underage drinkers and that episodes of binge drinking can seriously harm the health of your daughters. Please discuss this with your daughters to ensure their safety. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with you and we hope that each girl has a most enjoyable evening that she will fondly remember for the years to come. Annie Diamond - Year 12 Coordinator

Year 8 Camp Last week, the Year 8 students spent three days at the Tallebudgera Active Recreation Centre. The students participated in numerous activities – body boarding, high ropes, team challenge, catapults, archery and rock climbing. Through these

activities, the girls developed new friendships, faced challenges and supported each other. There were countless laughs, words of encouragement and ‘high fives’ when challenges were met. The students participated with enthusiasm and enjoyed the range of activities. I wish to sincerely thank the staff members who accompanied the girls on camp – Ms Gallen, Ms Dawes, Ms Coyle, Mrs Ashton, Ms Engler, Dr Shale, Ms Runge, Mrs Goldney, Mrs Little, Ms Mulherin and Ms Gaber. At the end of the three days, certificates were awarded to girls who were outstanding in their efforts throughout the group sessions. The qualities recognised included their willingness to meet challenges, to work co-operatively, to support other students and to establish new friendships. Certificates were awarded to Mikaela Turville, Gabrielle Nichols, Isabella Harper-Hill, Lily Rae, Bianca Flores, Jessica Riley, Caitlyn Hall, Lydia Wintour, Lara Tomlinson, Isobelle McCullough, Maggie Thomas and Stephanie Felesina. It was great to see the Year 8 students as they participated, cooperated and radiated. Jan Kearney – Year 8 Coordinator

Gallipoli Centenary Visiting Gallipoli for the centenary of the Anzac landings was an experience of a lifetime. It was a surreal experience to be at the dawn service and listening to dignitaries like Tony Abbott and Prince Charles make incredible speeches about what Anzac meant to them. What I really enjoyed about the service is that it was focused on celebrating the incredible bravery and mateship of our soldiers. To quote from John Key’s speech: “I will not say lest we forgot, because after 100 years we can say, on this day, April 25 2015, we remember”. After spending a few days around Çanakkale visiting important battle fields and cemeteries we travelled to Brussels and had a fun day seeing the sights and eating many waffles. Then, we made our way to Ypres and were fortunate enough to be a part of the Menin Gate service. This service has run every night at 8pm since the end of World War I. It was a very special night, with our group’s choir singing the Australian national anthem to conclude the service. We then travelled to the Somme, where some of the most devastating battles of World War I took place; it was an emotional experience for us all. Finally, we completed the tour in Paris, where we covered Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe all in one very busy day. It seemed crazy that the tour was coming to an end; the two weeks had flown by and we were definitely not ready to say goodbye. The trip was an experience of a lifetime. The friends I’ve made, the places I’ve seen, I’ll never forget. Taylor Whitewood

On Friday 15 May we had our first night hike. We traversed tracks for two hours around Mt Coot-tha. The turnout was good with nearly everyone there. Loreto One was all in attendance for the first time in two months. Everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves, with lots of shrieks and screams that sounded like fun but apparently were not. Lots of spiders and cane toads frequented the track creating mayhem. In the end everyone survived and we all got to use our head torches. Phew! Sunday 24 May we had our second major practice hike with Cav Rd SHS. This is a challenge even for the fittest of the fit. It is a 28km loop around Leo’s Break, Hell Hole Break, Centre Rd and Camp Mt. Everyone bravely gave it their best. Out of twelve teams from both schools who started only two finished the 28km loop, one team each from Cav Rd and Loreto. A third team, from Loreto, made it to Check Point Four before running out of time. All remaining teams exited after Check Point Three. This is a good result for Loreto and gives us a good indicator that all teams are on track. Thank you to our parent support crews Glenys, Maurice, Liz, Gayle, Steven, Marie and James. We appreciate your help and support. At the end of week five, two of the squad have covered more than 200km of training. Sara Bakker is well out in front with 220km at an average speed of 4.8km/h and Emily Andrew has completed 205km. Next in line is Catherine Weiss with 199km. Sara has also a 100% attendance which is a very good effort. Well done! Our next training hike is this Saturday 30 May at Bellbird Grove followed by a weekend of rest. This will be 23.5km in distance which is abit shorter but still very difficult and including most of the steepest inclines and declines on the course. Like the past two training sessions, it will test participants both mentally and physically. To be successful, all the skills learnt to date will be needed. Loreto Lightning has surged ahead with their fundraising and is now within five dollars of reaching their minimum target to entitle them to compete. Well done! The Wombats have slipped to fifth place on the ladder but we know they have a few tricks up their sleeve. Loreto One and Loreto Coorparoo Four are still floundering needing about $100 each to reach their minimum fundraising target. Thank you to everyone who has generously donated and given the comments of encouragement. Your support of our teams is greatly appreciated. We have four weeks left for our teams to raise the minimum fundraising. Two of our teams are still in desperate need of support and a third would love a hand to get over the line. Keen to support them? Please visit https:// kokodachallenge.com/donate-online and select Jim Stillman Cup for event and search for Loreto in the list of team names. Pick the team of choice and post your donation. Your donation goes to supporting youth at risk and PNG projects through The Kokoda Youth Foundation.
