Curriculum & Year Level Reports Music Department Date Claimer In the first week of Term 3 (Thursday 24 July) we will take both the Year 9 and 10 Classes to see Queensland Symphony Orchestra concert “Mr Smith’s Composition”, a narrated journey that will take the students through composing a masterpiece, and learning how the instruments of the orchestra transform the notes on the page into the music we hear. Year 11/ 12 Music Extension Seeing music performed live is a vibrant experience that provides a very different perspective to simply listening to recordings in the classroom. For this reason, each year we take classroom music students to a variety of professional concerts to enrich their learning. We will soon move into the Year 11 unit “Music of the Stage and Screen” and the Year 12 unit “Great Moments on Music”, where students study significant works that combine musical composition with other elements such as stage production. Therefore we will be taking the senior classes (11 and 12) to see “The King and I” on Wednesday 21 May at the Lyric Theatre. The ticket price is covered by the school, however as the performance is in the evening it is our expectation that parents will organise transport to and from QPAC for their daughters. Further details, such as exact times and tickets collection information, will be disseminated closer to the performance evening. Ben Langford - Director of Music

Co Curricular Events Co-Curricular Music Music Support Group The next MSG Meeting will be held this week on Wednesday 23 April starting at 7:30 pm. All parents of Loreto Music students are most welcome to attend. We are currently planning the Loreto Trivia Night and completing final preparations for the Autumn Concerts. Autumn Concerts In weeks 2 and 3 of this Term we will run our annual Autumn Concerts. This is the first chance for our ensembles to perform in 2014, an important step in their development for the year, and it is therefore compulsory for all students to attend the concert at which their ensemble is performing. It is also expected that parents would attend to support their daughters and provide an audience for the performing groups. Generally, Loreto Concerts begin at 6pm, with most students arriving by 5:30pm for warm-up and tuning with their conductor. The concerts always finish punctually at 9pm as long as we are able to get underway on time. Concert etiquette requires that students and other audience members attend the whole concert, not leaving at interval or after their own performance is complete. Any extraordinary exception to this courtesy should be organised in advance of the concert date by contacting the Coordinator of Music, Mr Ben Langford, in writing. Please note the following groups and their Autumn Concert date (also in school calendars and newsletters earlier this year): Autumn Concert 1 (Friday 9 May, 6:00 – 9:00pm) featuring Big Band, Concert Bands 1&2, Guitar Ensembles 1&2, Junior Choir, Senior Choir, String Ensemble Autumn Concert 2 (Tuesday 13 May, 6:00 – 9:00pm) featuring Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Flute Ensembles 1&2, Clarinet Ensembles 1&2, Percussion Ensembles 1&2 and Chorale Please note that Symphony Orchestra, Beginner String Ensemble and Beginner Brass Ensemble will not perform at these concerts. Ben Langford - Director of Music

Public Speaking Wondering what a particular female was doing in Cairns on Saturday 13 April was on the minds of many. No, we don't mean Ita but our own Rebecca Marshall! While Ita caused the electricity to die, Rebecca was able to light the minds and hearts of many. One of four contestants in the State Final for Lions Youth of the Year, Rebecca flew into Cairns before the planes were stopped due to the cyclone. She met the judges at a Friday evening reception, was interviewed Saturday morning and delivered two impromptu speeches and her prepared speech on Saturday evening at the gold-themed dinner. To our utter delight, Rebecca won the competition, thus becoming Queensland's National Finalist for 2014. She faces the other State finalists from around Australia on May 3 at Tamworth, NSW. More news on Rebecca's big day will come next week. For now, we wish to congratulate her on this fantastic achievement. We are very proud of you, Rebecca, and give you our sincere congratulations! Rosemary O’Neill - Public Speaking Coordinator

Girls are reminded that if they are travelling away from Loreto, they are to change into their playing uniform at lunchtime and report to the MWC at 3.05pm. If parents intend to collect their daughter from the ‘away’ or the Home ‘Mansfield’ venue, a note must be given to Mrs Gore by morning tea on match day. All buses aim to return to Loreto between 5.30 - 5.45pm, traffic dependent! We wish all teams the best of luck. Spectators are most welcome, we’d love to see you there! If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. Kirsty Gore - Volleyball Coordinator CaSSSA Tennis All training begins this week for the Tennis program. The original 8 team draws have been split into two groups of four based on progressive points after match 7. The exception is that where a school had two teams in an 8 team draw, the higher placed team from that school is placed in the top group of four and the lower placed team from that school is placed in the bottom group irrespective of position on the points table.
