Volume 15 - 21 May, 2013 Dear Parents and Students

In our year of Jus ce we give thanks for the opportunity and obliga on afforded to those of us in employment to assist others in need. May our hearts and minds be filled with compassion and empathy for those less fortunate. In our ‘work for jus ce’ may we be encouraging, empowering, empathe c and generous.

One of the blessings of work is the ability it gives us to give alms, to

give dignity to those who, however hard they work, cannot sustain

themselves. To deny alms to a person in need is to deny them life.

To judge harshly those who cannot provide fully for themselves is to expose our own lack of experience. The God who gives us life without merit expects us to do the same for others. As Emerson noted, “Noblesse oblige; or, superior advantages bind you to larger generosity.” At the end of the day, the poor have the responsibility to be responsible, but we have a responsibility that is just as binding. Our responsibility is to be compassionate. (“The Art of Life” by Joan Chi ster)

CONSULTATION WITH STUDENTS I wish to thank the students for their contribu on towards aspects of con nuous improvement at Loreto. In recent weeks, for example, senior staff and I have enjoyed: 

Conversa ons with the Year 8 Class Captains and Vice Captains about future recrea onal spaces and ac vi es to be provided for the lower secondary students. Their recommenda ons are wonderful.



Conversa ons with the SRC about how best to address the problem of heavy backpacks. I look forward to further feedback on this important issue and recommenda ons from the students about how best we can find ways to ‘lighten the load’.



Conversa ons with a student reference group about aspects of the landscaping that we hope to incorporate as part of the new capital developments. The Architects were very impressed with the students’ ideas and input. These discussions will con nue over the next few months.

It is wonderful to have the students ac vely involved in school wide improvements. I thank them for their leadership and the respec ul ways in which they present not only ideas, but also possible solu ons to problems. It is a privilege to work with them.
