CIRCULAR DRIVE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE With the commencement of building works the circular drive will be closed to all but emergency vehicles until further notice. This takes effect from Monday 25 November.

Parents are asked to use the pick-up and drop-off zones on Cavendish Road and in Lade Street. I thank you for your patience, understanding and co-operation.

TUCKSHOP – reminder Due to the commencement of the tuckshop extension and renovation, the tuckshop will be closed for the last week of term, 25 – 29 November.

During this week, basic provisions only will be available for purchase from the Mary Ward Centre kitchen. There will be no hot food available.

CIRCULAR DRIVE WILL BE CLOSED FROM MONDAY, 25 NOVEMBER 2013 As from Monday, 25 November 2013, student drop-off will no longer be possible in the Circular Drive accessed from Cavendish Road. Access for disabled students and visitors only will be available.

The builders contracted to build the Stage 1 Project, Rohrig (Qld) Pty Ltd, will be taking possession of the site on that date and safety fences will be erected to close off the building site.

Student drop off will only be available on Cavendish Road on either side of the driveway and in Lade Street. These areas are sign posted and a 2 minute limit is in operation between 7.00am to 9.00am and 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

The commencement of construction will result in additional traffic around the College and parents are asked to observe all parking and speed restrictions.

Art News Year 8 Blue, Green and White have completed a printmaking unit with the focus of the environment. Earlier in the year the students went on a Geography excursion to Maleny where they explored areas of rainforest. Working with images and memories from this experience they created the images for their prints. In keeping with the idea of caring for the environment, the students used discarded cardboard packages as their plate for a dry point intaglio print. Part of the design process was to consider the shape of the tree in relationship to the shape of their package in the creation of their composition.

Booklists All students should now have receive their to sell/buy booklists.

Students in Years 8,9 &10 are required to have any books they wish to sell second hand with them at school on Tuesday 26 November. Books are to be clearly marked with owner’s name and placed inside a bag with the “to sell” form filled out correctly. Students will be sent down to 605 on Tuesday morning during homeroom to hand in their books.

Students in Year 11 can hand in their booksonce they have finished with them, to the service area during exam block or to Room 605 on Wednesday 27 November. Books also need to be clearly marked with owner’s name and placed inside a bag with student’s “to Sell” form completed.

Book Sale Day Is Saturday 30 November from 8.30 am - 11.30am. Please note that this will be your only opportunity to purchase second hand books. There will be no second hand books available for purchase in January 2014. If you are unable to make the sale day, please make arrangement with someone else to purchase books on your behalf.

Symons Book Orders These can now be ordered on the Symons web site until Tuesday 3 December. Please order on time as any orders placed after that date will be classed as late orders and may not arrive on time for the start of the 2014 school year. A complete booklist is also on our College web site (under academic/textbook lists) with our school’s code LOR01. You will need the code when ordering from Symons. Book packs are available for collection on Monday 27 January 2014 from 9.00am 3.00pm and on Tuesday 28 January from 9.00am - 12 midday. If you are unable to collect your book pack on either of those days please arrange with someone to collect on your behalf. Please make a note in your diary of all the above dates and times as we receive a large number of calls at the beginning of each year enquiring about pickup dates etc. Thank you.

Music News Music Camp 2014 Invites for places on the 2014 Music Camp were last week emailed to all students in Concert Band One, Guitar Ensemble One, String Ensemble and Senior Choir. The closing date for replies was last Friday 15 November, so if you have not yet accepted your invitation, you should do so via the online google form urgently (the link is in the email)! If you believe you are eligible to attend Music Camp and have not received an emailed invite, then see Mr Langford immediately. It may be that there is an email address fault, or it could be that you have not submitted an ensemble application for next year. Please note that places on Music Camp are limited to approximately 110 students and these positions fill very quickly. If applications exceed this limit, then the following selection criteria apply:



However, due to both required instrumentation and limits of space there were unfortunately quite a number of students who could not be placed. Public Speaking Last week saw the last of the Public Speaking Competitions for the year.

English Speaking Union held its Finals and four out of the twelve competitors were from Loreto. The girls representing us were Aislind Bell, Lauren Michael, Alexandra White and Austen Whitewood. The girls had to prepare a speech on “English at its best” and they then had to give an impromptu speech on “The power of Science Fiction”. Needless to say, the boys in the audience responded more enthusiastically than the girls to the latter topic!

Congratulations to all four of our girls who engaged the audience with humour and interesting facts! Well done too to Austen, who was awarded a Highly Commended!

Aislind, Lauren, Alex and Austen are also commended on their enthusiasm, perseverance, diligence and commitment. They have been meeting nearly every morning at 7.30am and at their lunch break since the beginning of term. They now deserve a well-earned break!

P & F News P & F Parent Year Level Representatives Help generate community spirit by volunteering as a Year level rep!

Each year, the P & F look to our community, for one or two parents of each Year level, to organise ‘get-togethers’. These are a wonderful way to meet other parents from your daughter’s Year. The events can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish! Some event ideas may include drinks and nibbles by the Loreto pool, at someone’s home, park or a restaurant or bar. Support a local café by organising a Sunday brunch. You may even like to combine a Year level get-together with another event, such as a College dance. If you are holding an event at a private home, we will provide you with a copy of the GUIDELINES FOR HOLDING FUNCTIONS AT PRIVATE RESIDENCES. Advertising your events is as simple as placing an ‘advert’ in the weekly Loreto newsletter. You can put together your own advert or we can help you. We do ask that you keep the details to a half A4 page and remember to include a coupon. Year 11 Geography - Tackling the Big Issues—Food Security As part of their unit “Feeding the World’s People”, the Year 11 Geography class have been studying the issue of food security and in response to this, sustainable forms of food production. One of the methods studied included the feasibility of sustainably producing organic food on a variety of scales, including one’s backyard. To see a model example of this in action, the class recently undertook a field trip to “Bellis”, the award-winning sustainable house and garden project of ABC’s Gardening Australia Queensland presenter, Jerry Coleby-Williams. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to not only see first-hand just how much can be achieved in a small space, but to also hear from Jerry, an expert in the field of horticulture. His passion for his work was clearly evident and it was really wonderful to hear some of his stories, including that about the “first-fleet” lettuce. The girls certainly came away with a more informed opinion on this strategy and we thank Jerry for sharing his time and knowledge with us. Results from Round 6:

Under 13 Had a challenging game against Stuartholme. The girls started out strongly but unfortunately tired in the final quarter. The team is showing improvement in their skills and showing improvement in their skill level each week.

Under 14 A good game by the team this week against Somerville. It was a really tight game as the girls came extremely close to winning. The girls have improved tremendously playing the best game of the season with a huge improvement in defence.

Congratulations to our super goalie Eilish as she saved a large majority of the goals coming her way.

Under 15 The team had a tough game this week. Despite this, the girls played well in attack with everyone swimming down to help the ball. It was just an issue on defence letting a few counter attacks slip however the girls tried their best to catch up with the team to beat the counter attack.

Under 16 Played really well on the weekend. Defence has been a real working point in the girl’s games and it’s evident with scores like 8 - 0. Not only is their attack improving but they are learning to play a more sophisticated game.

Under 18 Competed against All Hallows’ in a tough match. As the team were down on players we had to rely on the 16’s girls but still managed to play well as a combined team. Some lack in communication from the referees and misunderstanding from the players resulted in some unlucky penalties. Good effort girls.

Swimming Squad for 2014 The Term 4 Swimming Squad program has started. This is an opportunity for all girls wanting to be part of the 2014 Swim Squad to meet the new coach, Ms Hatch, in preparation for the 2014 season. It is recommended that all girls who want to be in the team for 2014 attend. The details are as follows: Monday and Wednesday from 6.30am to 7.45am at Loreto Pool.

The dates are 25 and 27 November 2013. Please sign up at the Sports office.

Majestic Park Running Any girls are welcome to join the running training sessions with Andrew Lulham and Clare Geraghty on Monday and Tuesday afternoon at 3.30pm to 4.45pm and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. The group meets in the MWC in PE uniform. Please bring a cap and $5.00 for the session.

The Loreto Swim clinic/training program offers an opportunity for all girls to improve their stroke and fitness, in preparation for the 2014 Competition. Competitive swimmers/past squad swimmers will benefit from a customised training program that aims to build on the success from the 2013 season.
