HOW ABOUT EDUCATION IN PERU 2011?

Peru needs to improve the quality of education by connecting laptops from its OLPC program to internet.

In 2011, there were approximately 3.5 million pupils of 6 to 11 year old studying in the primary schools and 94% of them were in correct age of primary school level. However a great number of these pupils faced with a serious problem of the low quality of education as the report from Student Census Evaluation – ECE.

The report said “The most serious educational problem affecting children in Peru is the low level of reading comprehension and mathematical reasoning”.

Obviously Peru needs to improve the quality of education especially at the primary level. Even the “Once Laptop Per Child” program (OLPC) started since 2007 but without the 4th principal of that program, Internet connection.

WHY EDUCATION WITH INTERNET? Viettel Peru S.A.C (Bitel) arrived at the right time. As a subsidiary of Viettel Group of Vietnam, Bitel presents the philosophy of “business development goes with social responsibilities” in 9 countries all over the world. The development of society is the foundation for business growth, hence companies should take action to improve and develop the society in which they operate in.

Education is always the first choice of Viettel and now of Bitel as it like as two peas with Peruvian government directions as well as its educational tradition supporting the future of that country.

Because of these reasons, Bitel has strongly bidded much more the actual value of the band 1900mhz (1,4 million USD) and immediately won in the first time with a commitment of the first project including 4025 schools with the actual value of US$ 27.131.481, divided into 3 groups (1st group of 1208 schools with Internet speed of 2.5 Mbps, 2nd group of 1208 schools with Internet speed of 1.6 Mbps and 3rd group of 1609 schools with Internet speed of 1 Mbps).

HOW WE EXPAND THE PROJECT? In the following year, in the process of deployment its network infrastructure, the fourth telecommunication company operating in a saturated market has decided to use ďŹ ber optical infrastructure investment strategy for internet as its strength. Bitel continued winning a bid for the band of 900mhz at 2 million USD with another commitment of more difďŹ cult second project

including 718 free internet lines with the actual value of 28.351.281 USD including 438 schools with Internet speed of 2 Mbps, 168 municipalities with Internet speed of 2 Mbps and 122 Health Centers with Internet speed of 2 Mbps. Almost these lines in this second project have been locating in remote areas even some of them had no coverage of any operator before.

OUR PROGRESS After 3 years of implementation and completion of the first project as scheduled, Bitel not only provided broadband internet access to 4025 schools across Peru as its commitment but also actively expanded its project to support the education in Peru as Mr. Bari Adan Gloria Valera – Director of the IT and telecom -

Ministry of Education said: “Bitel plays a very important role in the development of education in Peru. Our plan is to provide 100% internet connection for primary schools by 2018”.

The second project will be finished by July this year.

In 2014 Bitel provided internet for events of Ministry of Education in inauguration ceremonies, their Virtual Education which provides training for teachers. Viettel had also welcomed Chemistry Olympic team of Peru to participate in 46th Chemistry Olympic in its native country - Vietnam and provided free laptop for each member of the team. Especially, taking advantage of its 3G internet strength,

Bitel covers zone Loreto, Amazon remote area the same day as its commercial launching day. Bitel gave a free internet room with 25 free computers and 10 years free broadband internet included for a primary school in I.E.P.M. N° 61006 in Iquitos which “helps the education a lot for the children and teachers, especially in the remote area like Loreto” said the director of education center "Sara Alicia Saberbein".
