RECENT NEWS HEALTHY EATING

CARDS FOR HOSPITALIZED KIDS

We aim to provide healthy choices to families that may not have access to fresh food. The generous donations we received last week from Panera Bread, Veg-Fresh Farms, and Starbucks allow us to do just that. Thank you for supporting your local Y!

Handmade cards made by YMCA kids will be distributed to hospitals all over the United States! Their uplifting messages will provide hope, joy and magic to children battling life-threatening diseases. It’s never to early to learn the power of encouragement and love!

YOUTH & GOVERNMENT

Our YMCA Youth & Government students had a blast at the 10th Annual Run 4 Kids event on March 25th. Hope you were able to stop by our booth to say hello and enjoy some delicious tacos!

TEA FOR TOTES LUNCHEON

Our lovely ladies representing the Y at the Crystal Roses Annual Tea for Totes Luncheon on March 25th. Crystal Roses is a non-profit that supports women facing life-threatening medical conditions.

COMMUNITY CENTER This week our teens had lots of fun doing a variety of activities and crafts like hand scrubs, slime, salt and glue art, and they finished up the week with a fun cooking project: ”Green SHREK Spaghetti and Grilled Chicken with Veggies”. Yummy! They also had fun playing some board games with Mr. Art during their spring break. They played a fun game of Uno, Pool, tug of war, apples to apples, head bands and much more!

For next week we will do activities including catapults, bird feeders, popsicle stick bridges, friendship bracelets, fun cooking projects and much more! Also we will be having 2 nursing students from Cal State Fullerton that will give a small presentation on diabetes prevention to our teens on April 5th .

Also we would like to invite our community friends and families to a family event at Home gardens. There will be free groceries, a bounce house, face painting, food and community resources. Not to mention our very own ballet folklorico class will be performing! Come join us!

YOUTH CENTER AT MERRILL Merrill has a new study: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The children are investigating what people throw away, where trash goes and what do workers do there. The children were asked to bring an item to school that could be recycled and about it at “Circle Time”. During the discussion the teacher showed children the recycle symbol that is on recycled items and they found several items that were thrown in the trash instead of the recycle bin. We now have a trash can with the recycled sign on it for the children to place their recycled items.

The teachers read the story Sam Helps Recycle and Radio Man. The class had fun making art from some of their trash.

Merrill has been busy cleaning out the raised beds. The classes pulled out all the weeds and prepared the beds for planting our garden.

YOUTH CENTER AT MAIN Y 2 year old Walkers

A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Hello Everyone! We will be having our Pancake Pozole Breakfast May 13, 2017 from 8am – 11am here at Main Y. Pozole, or Pancakes, eggs and turkey sausage will be served to dine in or take to go.

We will have raffle prizes, and a children’s art gallery for your enjoyment. See your Site Supervisor soon for tickets! Tickets will be sold at $6 per adult, 7 & Under $3 and under 2 years old will be free. Please bring your family out and support our YMCA!

Calvert Preschool In the Calvert Preschool we have been practicing writing our names, learning shapes and reading lots of spring stories.

Next week we will be focusing on letter recognition, letter sounds, and writing along with the coming of spring. We will also be learning about all kinds of bugs as the weather warms up and enjoying outside play.

The two year class focused on the letter A, the number 1, and the star this week. We made our alligators with the letter A and we are decorating our own flowers. We will be spending these next two weeks welcoming spring. We will be discussing the way flowers and plants grow. We will also learn how the weather changes with the different seasons.

Jerry 1 State Preschool This week Jerry one will continue traveling to the wonderful world of spring, discovering insects, flowers plants, animals and more. Through stories like The Grouchy Ladybug will allow our class to learn about empathy, feelings, appropriate social skills, and treating others with respect. The book also offers an opportunity to teach children about time and the concept of size.

School Age These next two weeks we will experiment with gardening. We will learn the basics of gardening from dirt and seeds to planting and maintaining. Hopefully in a few weeks we can eat from our own garden!

YOUTH CENTER AT HOME GARDENS

W would like to extend a warm welcome all of the new children in our program! Next week we will continue working on Spring projects and make a caterpillar book, writing down the different foods a caterpillar would eat.

The children are also working on making slime and playdough using borax, glue, water, food coloring and hand soap. We will make objects that fly such as hot air balloons, kites and airplanes.

We are currently planning a talent show day where children will display their talent for all to see. Each child will name and demonstrate 5 talents.

We can’t wait!

YOUTH CENTER AT CITY PARK Greeting from City Park! On St. Patrick's Day, classroom 1 played with big blocks of green ice and used building tools to chip away the ice and find surprises inside. They also found coins in the green colored shaving cream. Classroom 2 had Lucky Charms for their snack.

In the week of March 20, our classes finished up their study of buildings and worked together to make a pretend building on the playground. All the children took turns painting it. Inside the classroom, the children created buildings with large boxes.

In the week of March 27th, the classes started their study of recycling and the children are discussing what can be recycled. Mrs. Sonia in classroom 1 has set up boxes for the children to separate their trash.

YOUTH CENTER AT HARADA Last week the children at Harada enjoyed indoor and outdoor activities with bubbles.

The next two weeks we will explore and learn about plants, specifically fruits and vegetables. The children will have the opportunity to learn about choosing and incorporating healthier food in their daily lives.

Through active play children will learn how important is to add fruits and vegetables to their diet. They will learn the food pyramid and the benefits the fruits and vegetables have . The will make a healthy food collage, play a fruits and vegetables game, plant seeds and track their growth over time. Children will also make their own menu where they can include fruits and vegetables to their meal.

For our reading portion we will cover The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I am an Apple , Charlie The Caterpillar , Rain Forest Ride and Fruits And Vegetables!

YOUTH CENTER AT CITRUS CIRCLE As a part of our continued study of fine art and related concepts, we have looked at the use of color, lines, forms, textures, as well as geometric and biomorphic shapes, in popular works of art. We have exercised our artistic natures by creating art with everything from paint to pipe cleaners.

We are also utilizing the National Gallery of Art’s Kid Zone website to enhance our creativity and artistic competence. On this site, we are able to create fine art in various styles. We can add and remove still life elements like flowers, fruit, (even furniture!) and style the main subject matter (people, animals, homes) to suit our specific tastes. We also created a memory game using major works of art, such as the Mona Lisa!

INFANT CENTER AT RIVER ROAD The infant/toddler program celebrated St. Patrick ’s Day with face painting and decorating four-leaf clovers.

We are also jumping into spring by having super-hero Fridays for the boys and princess tea parties for the girls.

Our kids will be dressing up and having tons of fun! We can’t forget to welcome our new babies Illahrae, Freddy, Anthony, and Ian. We are saying goodbye to our friend Armando who is now in the 2 year old class at the Main Y.

YOUTH CENTER AT JURUPA VALLEY Infants The infants are enjoying the warm weather and outside activities. Infants have been doing more texture activities that will develop their motor and sensory skills.

Toddlers We will be focusing on language development and teacher-child interactions by reading and playing games in small groups. In order to develop their vocabulary, we will use simple songs, rhymes and take a nature walk where children describe what they see.

Preschool The new season will give us an opportunity to introduce the children to Spring, compare the differences between other seasons and discuss how flowers bloom. We will go on a nature walk around the center to look for the different flowers that are blooming.

School Age Our school age kids are really enjoying Spring break! We have made some in house play dough and “Gak” (slime). The children are enjoying outside activities, organized games and are preparing to make boats.

The program will include track & field, Olympic style sports and cardio-focused activities to increase strength, balance and endurance through the art of play!
