Dear Customer… Where to start………………….. Welcome back to you all is as good a place as any I suppose! If you are reading this and you have reopened, we hope that things are on the up. If you are reading this and you have yet to re-open then we sincerely hope that the time is coming for you to get your business back open and on its feet again. 2020 started so well. We were full of optimism and excitement about our 40th Birthday plans. We had a new logo, a new website, a nominated Charity of the Year, an online ordering App up and running and promotions galore to help us all have an amazing Ruby Celebration Year. Then Covid-19 happened and it all stopped dead in its tracks in mid-March. We have taken the decision to kick our celebrations down the line until 2021 where we will go again. We will have a 41st Birthday Celebration Year and throw all our energies into that, so watch this space for more news on that. What a truly bizarre time it has been though. Could we ever have imagined shutting down our businesses for months on end? From personal experience it was a real roller coaster of emotions. Learning to be a school teacher was a challenge for Karen and I, but the opportunity to spend some real time with the kids was one of the more positive things to come out of lockdown. We spent all the lockdown period trying to reimagine what we do, knowing that we wanted to come through this experience a better company with more focus on what our customers really wanted from us. We are still working through many things, but with a renewed outlook on how we can change and adapt to be better at what we do. It is taking time for product ranges to be restocked and for promotions and brochures to come back and as such, we have taken the decision to go for digital only for this edition with a view to printing the November December 2020 Headlines as the first one back. Hopefully by then many of our suppliers will have promotional plans in place and we can make it a bumper issue, just in time for Christmas! This edition though does see the launch of an exciting new partnership with Vocation Brewery from Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire. They are relatively new to the On Trade and we have exclusive rights in our area for these terrific cask, keg and canned beers. They are brewed with a modern style and look amazing and can give you a real point of difference on your bar. Contact us today to find out how to get started with them. We would finally like to thank all of our customers and our suppliers. Everyone has been hugely supportive of us during the most challenging time in our history. We truly believe that we will come through this stronger than ever and it will be because of the amazing relationships we have with you all that will help us move on from these dark times. Love and best wishes to you all. Rob and Karen Eastwood Directors, Small Beer Ltd

CASK ALE - WEEK -
Celebrate Britain's National Drink
The cask ale experience cannot be replicated outside of On Trade venues and therefore the category offers a real opportunity this autumn to attract customers back and increase sales. Cask Ale Week promotes and celebrates all things cask – a truly British drink. It’s the perfect time to review your cask ale offering & encourage customers to sample your quality premium products.

Making the most of Cask Ale Week
Temperature & Cellar
Run your own table service beer festival with special guest ales.
• Cask ales should be kept in a temperature-controlled environment in your cellar, recommended at between 11oC and 13oC. • Due to yeast build up, a 7-day line cleaning routine is imperative. • In recent years, 2/3 of cask drinkers said they would prefer beer to be served cooler than the recommended 11oC-13oC. Several brands have introduced innovative cooler cask beers served between 5oC and 9.5oC as a result. Cooler cask beers can help attract new people to the category but top priority is getting your standard cask offering spot on first.

SPICE UP YOUR OUTLET FOR NATIONAL CURRY WEEK! 5th - 11th October
Britain is a nation of curry lovers and curry is often hailed as ‘Britain’s national dish’. National Curry Week was established in 1998, primarily to celebrate all things curry but also to raise money for charities that focus on poverty and malnourishment; presenting the On Trade with a fantastic opportunity to boost trade as well as raising money for a worthy cause.
Make the most of National Curry Week with our top tips: • Curries are the perfect dish to add to your takeaway offer this autumn. Create a special Curry Week takeaway menu - you could run a set menu all week or promote a different curry each day. • Be diverse with your curry selection. Don’t limit your offer just to Indian curries - there are many options to choose from such as Thai, Indonesian, Chinese and Goan. • Curry for change is the official Curry Week charity. Designate a dish from your menu to donate £1 per plate sold.
Think Outside the box! Y ou don’t need to stay traditional - put a curry spin on some classic dishes. Here's some ideas:

- Incorporate curry flavours into your Sunday roast. Spice your meat and serve with masala roast potatoes and cumin roast carrots.
HELPFUL TIPS, TRICKS & SUGGESTIONS! • A weekly curry club is a great way to boost mid-week trade. If you don't already run one, use Curry Week as your launch! • Increase your customers’ average spend and your gross profit by offering a range of extras such as naan bread, poppadoms and potato/vegetable options. • Run a special offer on Asian beers for the week. • If your venue is wet led, think about adding a special range of Curry Week bar snacks. You can even pre-buy these to make it easier.
• Promote drink pairings with your curries and offer a special price if ordered together. The most popular pairing for curry is beer, but you can also pair well with wine. • Street food has increased in popularity over the last few years. Help your venue stand out with an interesting street food menu rather than a traditional curry offering. • Promote your offering on social media. Don’t forget to use #nationalcurryweek and post in local community groups to reach a wider customer base.
• Make sure you offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.

The Rum Revival
Rum is following in the footsteps of gin to become the next big thing in the world of spirits. The variety and versatility of rum presents a major growth opportunity for the On Trade and this growth is set to continue as customers explore the category further.

Make sure you promote your rum offers and trends on your social media channels!
Get your range right!
• Stock a strong range including some well-known brands to spark rum sales. • Include a range of varietals - a good core white rum and a spiced rum are vital to any back bar, plus the increasingly popular dark and golden varieties. • Remember the key principles of core (standard), upsell (premium) and choice (niche brands) for a broad range appealing to a variety of consumers and different price points. • Add new rum cocktails to your menu & ensure you offer a broad range of mixers.
Capitalise on rum trends!
Trends in rum sub-categories could be the real key to increasing your rum sales. • Flavoured rums are set to experience 43% growth in the next few years. • Emerging flavours include pineapple, coffee, raspberry and hemp. • The popular coconut variants are also set for a growth boost. • Premium and artisan rums are being positioned to upsell over standard cocktails, or rum and coke options.
Mix it right!
Smoky - garnish with orange!
Woody - garnish with apple!
69% of rum sold in the On Trade is consumed with a mixer****. Keeping up with trends and new products in the mixer category is key to growth. • 4/5 rum drinkers choose to mix it with cola or diet cola*. Educate your customers in matching rum with juice, ginger ale, or other mixer options rather than choosing a G&T. • An increasing number of mixers designed to be used with dark spirits are now available. • With your mixers you should also pay special attention to complementary and interesting flavours to add diversity to your range. Taking care of business

covid-19
The impact of Coronavirus is a huge challenge for the out of home channel, however, there is strength in the relationships that we have built over many years of working together developing our respective businesses. Since the government allowed the On Trade to open its doors again, it has been vitally important to inspire confidence & trust in your customers by making sure you follow all the guidelines that are provided while reacting quickly & professionally to all advice given.
Looking after your business Be sure to access all the financial & legal assistance that is available to you: www.gov.uk/coronavirus/business-support.
New operating models
If you haven’t already, offering a takeaway and/or delivery service is a great way to maintain a positive relationship with your local community and boost trade while you are operating at a reduced capacity. Your efforts will be appreciated and will create loyalty in the local community, which will be repaid when trade begins to return to normal. Visit the link for some useful information on setting up a takeaway service:

Increase your trading capacity with a temporary pavement licence.
For more guidance on outdoor seating see: www.gov.uk/government/publications/pavement-licences-draft-guidance
Looking after your staff As you bring staff back to work, it is essential to run training on all new procedures and safety measures at your outlet so that they can keep themselves and your customers safe. While your staff were furloughed through the Job Retention Scheme you may have asked them to undertake training to help them learn new skills. Training is something you can offer ongoing to help support your staff. Some colleagues might have been struggling with the lockdown and not working as well as now readjusting back to some sort of normality. There are a number of resources to help with mental health issues.

Looking after your customers - building trust It is vitally important that you inspire confidence & trust in your customers by making sure you follow all guidelines that are provided and react quickly & professionally to all advice given. • Use social media to inform customers of the measures you are taking to ensure the safety of customers and staff.
•R emove tables to allow more space between them to aid with social distancing.
• Update customers in a reassuring tone on the measures you are taking to ensure the safety of your guests and staff.
• Take bookings to manage the number of customers in your outlet at any one time.
• Ensure your outlet is following the guidelines to inspire confidence with your local community, not only in your premises but also the wider industry. • Clearly display signage in your outlet detailing your new systems and procedures to customers. • Ensure that your staff are following the most current guidelines and are seen to be regularly washing their hands, wiping down tables, bar areas, door handles etc.
• Consider employing a door host to manage the number of people entering your outlet at once. • Remove shared condiments from tables & bars. • Go cashless and sanitise your credit card machines between uses. Let customers know this is being done. • Remove bar stools to reduce gatherings at the bar. • Position hand sanitisers on the bar and areas of footfall for customers to use.

• Entice customers to your venue with an attractive, simple set priced menu - a fantastic opportunity to be more creative with your dishes & to charge higher price points.
• You could even theme your menu around Day of the Dead with Mexican options such as nachos, chilli and churros! Don’t forget tequila!
• Include seasonal produce in your menu – pumpkin or squash, apples and nuts.
Maintain social distance while taking orders & offer table service!
• Soups, such as pumpkin and cumin or sweet potato, are an easy to make and cost-effective option. • Mulled cider is an excellent warming offer for Autumn, especially for outdoor events.
Create your own spooktacular cocktail range! Think about interesting serves.

Offering a takeaway food & drink service is a great way to boost trade while your venue is at a limited capacity.
Themed and dark beers are a great way to get in the spirit of Halloween & Bonfire Night
Pre-mixed cocktails are a great option for quick service!
The unoffical beer of Halloween!
Events
Parties and big events may not be an option for this year, but you can still host enjoyable Halloween and Bonfire Night events while keeping your customers and staff safe. • Make the most of outdoor spaces for your autumn events. • Manage customer numbers by taking bookings/selling tickets to ensure you can adhere to social distancing regulations. • Use POS your suppliers have on offer to decorate your venue! • Encourage customers to come in fancy dress to add to the atmosphere! • Pub quizzes took the nation by storm throughout lockdown – host your own themed quiz. You could even sell tickets to an online stream to allow for increased numbers. • Set up a bar outside, put on a hog roast and serve warming drinks like mulled wine or cider as well as hot chocolate and coffee (with alcohol or not!).
• An outdoor bar could also allow more space to host your own autumn beer festival if you put the right social distancing measures in place!
Table service only to avoid larger groups forming! • Remember fireworks can only be set off by someone who is licensed to do so! If you are, (adhering to social distancing of course!) then why not put on a display for local residents? • Advertise as early as possible and engage with social media community groups to reach a wider audience.
Ensure you manage team sizes appropriately & tables are adequately spaced for social distancing!
Don’t forget to adhere to the latest social distancing regulations in your venue. For the latest guidance visit www.gov.uk/coronavirus HEADLINES · sep-oct 2020
