Valentine’s Day

February 2014

here was a priest by the name of Valentine. He lived in Rome about 250 AD when Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Claudius wanted a big army and he thought men should volunteer to join, but most men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and girlfriends and thus not many men signed up. This made Claudius mad. So he had an outrageous idea that if men were not married, they would not mind joining his army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. Valentine thought it was ridiculous! One of his favorite jobs as a priest was to marry people and after Emperor Claudius passed his law, Valentine kept on performing marriage ceremonies—but secretly. He would whisper the words of the ceremony, while listening for soldiers on the steps outside. One night, he did hear footsteps. The couple he was marrying escaped, but he was caught. Valentine was thrown in jail and told that his punishment was death. Many young people came to the jail to visit him. They threw flowers and notes up to his window. They wanted him to know that they, too, believed in love. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit him in his cell. They often sat and talked for hours. She believed he did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and performing marriage ceremonies. On the day he was to die, he left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it, “Love from your Valentine.” It was written on the day he died, February 14, 269 AD. That note started the custom of exchanging love notes on Valentine’s Day. Each February we take one day and celebrate it as Valentine’s Day. I hope you have someone to love on February 14th. And I hope that every day you remember the love which God has for you. You can read His love notes in the Bible and you send God a love note every time you say a prayer. Twin Cities Youth Chorale

he Twin Cities Youth Chorale (TCYC) is a vibrant, nonprofit auditioned choral organization for 7-14 year old boys and girls from communities across the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Several children from Lord of Life perform in TCYC. Their lovely voices will add to Lord of Life’s worship service on Saturday, February 22, at 5:30 pm. TCYC provides outstanding musical opportunities for young singers through workshops, collaborations, festivals, access to traditional and non-traditional concert locations, challenging repertoire, and solid music education principles. Confession of Peter: “Jesus said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ ”

his is a great question, one that has been posed throughout the centuries by millions of people. The answers vary from prophet to teacher to rabbi to political insurrectionist to homeless itinerant preacher to Son of God to Messiah. The answer is different for everyone. Peter has answered for himself; Scripture recorded it: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” But who do you say Jesus is? The one you go to in times of need? The one one you share your most intimate joys with? The one you thank for his grace and love in your life? The one sent by God to redeem the world? Your answer to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say I am?” is likely to change throughout your journey of faith. There is

A Gardener’s Thoughts

For me, the garden is a place of renewal...the ideal place for quiet reflection.

t first, the idea of having my own individual garden was what appealed to me about LifeGARDEN. I had helped in my family’s garden as a child, and I looked forward to growing my own vegetables. Although I still enjoy my garden, I soon realized that what was really important was the community garden, where everything that is grown is donated to a foodshelf. Every gardener who has an individual plot is expected to work in the community garden. Every year we ask CROSS whether we are sending too much of one vegetable or another. They always respond that they can use everything we send them. There is both a great need, and great appreciation for the food that we contribute. It gives me pause to recognize that hunger isn’t confined to faraway places, or even urban centers, but is in our own backyard. I recognize how fortunate I am to be able to afford healthy food. For me, the garden is a place of renewal. It is the ideal place for quiet reflection, picking beans doesn’t require a lot of concentration. I marvel at what the tiny carrot seed grows into, or how a scrawny tomato plant turns into a healthy bush so laden with fruit that its limbs need supporting. Every year we have had a pair of nesting killdeer in the garden. This bird lays its eggs on bare ground with no regard for human activity going on around it. Each spring we search out its nest, so that we can be careful to avoid stepping on it. This summer I was checking out the nest on the day the chicks hatched. Tiny heads peeked out from under the mother’s body, while the male urgently tried to lure me away from the babies with a broken wing act. Within 48 hours these same chicks were racing around the garden on legs ideally suited for running. It reminded me of God’s perfect plan. These birds, whose nest offers them no protection from predators, have been given the ideal tools to help them to grow and thrive. God’s creation is an awesome thing. My time in the garden reminds me that we are caretakers of this Earth. All of us need to treat it with respect and carefully preserve it for future generations.

sk any group of gardeners (or people simply interested in gardening) and you will probably find the group split between those who favor growing flowers and those who will grow only vegetables. Last summer I asked a vegetable gardener if he also grew flowers, and he replied, “Nope. If you can’t eat it, I don’t grow it!” It’s a good thing there are lots of types of gardeners, because lots of varied gardening help is needed at Lord of Life. First, for those who like to work with flowers and shrubs, assistance is needed with planning, planting, and maintaining the flower beds and parking lot medians around the Lord of Life building. This is a three-season job, and requires several people, as there are many planted areas. If you would like to use your gardening interest and skill for this task, you are invited to attend a meeting on Monday, February 17, at 7 pm. Second, if your interest runs more to growing vegetables, consider being part of LifeGARDEN, Lord of Life’s community garden. This garden exists mainly to grow fresh vegetables for CROSS, and last year over 12,000 pounds was donated. If you would like to be part of the planning process for LifeGARDEN, you are invited to attend a planning meeting on Monday, February 24, at 7 pm. All those who make a commitment to work in the community garden producing food for donation are also invited to have their own plot or plots in the individual garden section of the community garden. There will be a short dedication service, cake, coffee, and fellowship. We also will be honoring Pastor John Skeie who retired from Good Samaritan Society - Ambassador on December 31 as its chaplain for the past 10 years. Celebrate Recovery

e’ve all had our share of difficult morning and evening commutes this winter. I can’t count the number of cars I have seen spinning their wheels in the greasy, slushy mess on the roads. It made me think of my journey in recovery and of those who come to Celebrate Recovery. On our own, each of us was trying to find some sort of traction, some movement to get going through a difficult situation. We were all literally spinning our wheels, doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. And reality was, we were going nowhere. Through weekly teachings on the 12 Steps and God’s word, through the power of testimonies and the added support of one another, those in attendance at Celebrate Recovery are moving forward. We are making progress on our road to recovery. We are no longer stuck in one place. We have hope! If you’re stuck in a rut and can’t get moving, check out Celebrate Recovery. You will be warmly welcomed and encouraged. You will learn how loved you are by God. You will learn that nothing is impossible. You will learn that even in the most difficult situation, you can make changes and move forward. You will learn you are not alone. You, too, will find hope.

Celebrate Recovery meets every Tuesday evening with dinner beginning at 5:45 pm and programming starting at 6:30 pm. Programming is also available for teens and children K-6th grade. LSS Children’s Clothing Sale

received the following thank you message from one of the Lutheran Social Service housing specialists after the Children’s Clothing Sale this past fall:

“Just wanted to let you all know several of my families have been so grateful for the clothing sale we had last weekend! All of the feedback has been so positive from my families! They were very appreciative of all the quality things they found, and I just wanted to let you all know this! Thanks again!”

And I want to add my thanks for the wonderful clothing donations, the time and energy of all our sorters from Word for Women, and our terrific volunteers who set-up and worked the sale. We had 72 families who shopped, with 262 children among them. You have all been part of making a difference to these families who are not as fortunate as most of us.

Please save October 11, 2014 for the fourth annual event. We will again collect general gently used or new children’s clothing, infant through high school. We will also need to focus on new underwear and socks, pants for boys and girls and white T-shirts for boys, as well as the uniform shirts and pants. They were all a big hit and much needed. We’ll get more information out this spring. The Management of Church Finances

he Church Assessment Tool that we took last fall asked an interesting question about how Lord of Life is seen to manage its finances. This was the question: On the whole, my church does a good job of managing its budget and finances. Respondents were asked their reaction to that statement with the options being: Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Tend to Disagree, Tend to Agree, Agree, Strongly Agree or Don’t Know. A total of 941 people answered the question and only one was Strongly Disagree. Two people answered Disagree and six Tend to Disagree, meaning that less than 1% of respondents questioned how the budget and finances at Lord of Life are managed. There were 708 people or 75.2% who selected one of the Agree options. This shows a high degree of trust and satisfaction with the processes that Lord of Life has in place for managing our finances. That’s really good news. The only negative that I saw in the results was that 23.8% of people responding answered “Don’t Know” to the statement. That’s almost one in four people. Of course many of those folks don’t care to know and the reality is that if there had been any problems then they would know and have an opinion. But still I think a little information might be helpful here. Lord of Life has just completed a budget cycle that will culminate in the anticipated approval of the 2014 budget at the January 26 Congregational Meeting. The highest decision-making body in the church is the congregation, which comes together at the Congregational Meeting. Each year on the fourth Sunday in January we approve a budget for that year. Before the congregation votes on a budget it is examined and approved by the Congregation Council. And before it goes to them I develop a budget based on the goals that we want to accomplish combined with projected giving for the coming year. The largest parts of the budget are staff salaries, mortgage payments, building expenses, and program costs. We do the projection of giving based on pledges received and the previous year’s history of giving. Each year we do an external audit of our finances. While some would say this is an unnecessary expense, I believe it is an important safeguard on our finances and a willingness to be transparent in all that we do. That Lord of Life Weekly Giving — December 2013 transparency is my goal. In the future I will continue to $250,000 communicate the processes we use to manage our $200,000 budget and finances. Tuscaloosa Bound!

n April of 2011, tornadoes ripped through the south and hit the city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Habitat for Humanity has jumped in big time over the past two years, building new homes for people who have lost theirs. This is a long process, and there are still homes to be built and lives to be touched. Habitat for Humanity is now not only building new, they are rehabbing existing homes in the area. Watch for more details to come and an informational meeting sometime in the spring. However, we do know that we will be traveling down to arrive on Sunday, July 27; we will work Monday-Friday. Our housing will be at a refurbished YMCA camp. Jamaica Update

Maple Hill Estates

omework Help is providing an incredible service for the children at Maple Hill Estates. Not only are they receiving help from willing volunteers, but they are feeling the love of God flow through the volunteers. The first annual community Christmas Party was a HUGE success! As you can see from the photo above, everyone had a great time and got to know their neighbors better at the same time. Lord of Life provided the space and many volunteers helped to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone who came.

eams supporting One Mission One World (1M1W) - Jamaica are leaving for Jamaica beginning March 22. Teams will work at West Haven Orphanage caring for over 80 special needs children and adults. A temporary medical clinic will be established in Montego Bay to provide acute healthcare for many people in need. Construction and maintenance projects designed to improve the housing at the Clifton Boys’ Home will be undertaken by team members.

we need your help Each of the missionaries brings a suitcase filled with supplies donated by the generous members of Lord of Life. 1M1W-Jamaica is in desperate need of suitcases. Please ask family and friends to donate any and all suitcases for use to transport critical supplies. Note: Donated suitcases will not be returned. So, if you are planning to upgrade your luggage in 2014, rather than discard them, please consider donating the luggage to this mission program. In addition, we are in need 2012 Jamaican missionaries with their “mission in a suitcase” of boys’ underwear, both briefs and boxers in all sizes, and boys’ and men’s belts. Girls’ and women’s underwear and sports bras are also a great need. Donation bins are located in the Service Center. God’s love is spreading throughout the beautiful island of Jamaica and the missionaries from Lord of Life will be growing in their faith. Thank you for your strong support. This collection starts the week of February 15/16.

Journey to Bethlehem

A St. Paul Adventure by Joan Holmes

n December 19, the OWLs toured the James J. Hill House on Summit Avenue in St. Paul where railroad magnate Hill and his wife Mary raised eight of their children. This 36,000 square foot red stone mansion was finished in 1891 at a cost of $930,000. It contains an art gallery with a pipe organ, beautiful carved woodwork and furniture, plus 13 bathrooms! After the tour, the OWLs had lunch at Billy’s On Grand. Unfortunately, Zippy got stuck on the ice on a hill in the parking lot. After several tries to free it, Billy’s owner found a garbage truck with a long chain and they were able to free the bus! In rush-hour traffic, the tired OWLs got home almost two hours late.

The OWLs dined on Scandinavian delicacies of Swedish meatballs with all the trimmings, thus began their Journey to Bethlehem. Pastor Peter shared the story of the Wise Men and the purpose of their journey which was to worship the newborn child Jesus. Tom Tipton (above left) led us in worship as he sang Silent Night and delighted us with familiar Christmas carols. Pastor Chuck Tindell (at right) encouraged everyone to check their journey of life suitcase. Our suitcase should include (a) a positive attitude, (b) sense of humor, (c) sense of meaning and purpose, (d) willingness to try new and different things, (e) a spiritual anchor, and (f) realization of your length of days on earth.

Come and volunteer at EFN! We appreciate our volunteers who come on a regular basis, but we are also looking for new volunteers to pack and sort food. The work is easy and a fun way to get to know other members. EFN is located at 8501-54th Avenue North in New Hope. Our next packing date is Monday, February 3, 4-7 pm. he Monsons and Orendorffs have been serving meals with Lord of Life at Hope Lodge for years, so it’s no wonder they decided to help host dinner on Christmas Eve. This was a great opportunity to re-gift their blessings, and they have found that the heartfelt gratitude expressed by the guests and caregivers—along with the great conversation—makes them feel like they are receiving far more than they give. According to Maureen “Mo” Orendorff, “It’s a privilege and a blessing to be able to serve at Hope Lodge, and you get to meet some wonderful people on both sides of the kitchen counter!”

Thursday, March 20: Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) will be where we’ll pack specially-formulated meals for malnourished children throughout the world. These meals are shipped to over 70 countries. Packing of the meals does require being able to stand for two hours. After this service project, we will go to Carol’s Restaurant for a late lunch or a treat on your own. There will be a shopping opportunity at the restaurant in Vintage Rose’s Gifts. Leave at 11 am and return at 4 pm. Cost is $3 for the bus.

The power of re-gifting at Hope Lodge has always been a positive experience for Steve Monson. He shared that his “time at Hope Lodge has helped me develop as a person. My ‘comfort zone’ has been expanded.”

Both of these families have been personally impacted by cancer, and they find it amazing to see how their efforts affect the lives of those facing a life-threatening illness. The upbeat attitudes of guests who are facing uncertain futures are unbelievable. Food, conversation, and prayer seem to go a long way. The Richard M. Schulze Family American Cancer Society Hope Lodge is a home-away-from-home, free of charge, for adult cancer patients and their caregivers who travel more than 40 miles to receive treatment. Souper Bowl of Caring by Lynn Leisen, Faith in the Home Ministry

n 1990, a Super Bowl Sunday prayer inspired a group of young people to do something more than celebrate a football game. They created the Souper Bowl of Caring and have mobilized youth across the country to raise more than $98 million for people in need.

On Sunday, February 2, 160 million Americans will tune in to the Super Bowl football game. There will be parties with abundant food, friendship, and fellowship. At the same time, there will be people worrying about staying warm, finding shelter, and a warm meal. Please join young people around the country as they demonstrate God’s love by loving their neighbors through the Souper Bowl of Caring. It’s a simple, yet significant, act of caring for others. Add cans of soup to our display near the main office from February 1-10. Our young people are developing hearts for giving that can last a lifetime. Please support their efforts.
