March is Brain Health Awareness Month! This month, celebrate your brain and learn ways to keep it healthy by checking out the 6 pillars of brain health!
About the Brain and Brain Injuries
Your brain controls all major functions in your body, so it is extremely important that you keep your brain healthy. Physical trauma to the brain caused by falls, collisions, sports or work injuries, and car accidents are the most common reasons a person may sustain injury to the brain. However, these injuries can be prevented by quick solutions like wearing helmets in sports, always wearing a seatbelt in the car, and getting checked for concussion symptoms after a collision with an object or person. Falls, which are the most common cause of brain injury, can also be prevented by keeping floors clean and dry, improving lighting, installing guardrails where necessary, and getting your eyesight checked regularly. However, even this is not enough to keep your brain healthy. While preventing brain injuries helps tremendously with brain health, your brain will still deteriorate if it is not taken care of. To keep your brain in top working condition, check out the 6 pillars of brain health below!
6 pillars of Brain Health
These preventative lifestyle choices can reduce your risk of cognitive impairment and keep your brain functioning at its best!
1. Mental stimulation. Exercise your brain like it’s a muscle. Keep learning new things to create new neuropathways so that when one part of your pathway starts to age, the new pathways take over. Learning a new skill, instrument, or language is a great way to make new connections and keep your brain active. The more complex the activity, the better it is for your brain.
2. Exercise. Exercise expands the size of the hippocampus – the part of the brain involved in learning and memory. Exercise can reduce the risk of cognitive impairment by up to 36%. Doing just 10 minutes of aerobic activity per day improves problem-solving skills and focus.
3. Nutrition. Eating a low sodium diet full of omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins such as fish, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and nuts helps to protect your brain from cognitive decline.
4. Social engagement. Spending time with friends and family can reduce stress and isolation, leading to a happier, healthier brain. It was found that people who have daily social engagement reduce their risk of dementia by 50%.
5. Sleep. Sleep is extremely important to brain health. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night to reduce the risk of brain disorders and cognitive decline.
6. Stress reduction. Chronic or prolonged stress releases cortisol into your body, which can cause premature damage to your brain. Yoga or any type of mindful movement can help reduce and manage stress while keeping you active.

Tara Timmermans - Langley #9
I was in Red Deer and stopped at your Lordco Auto Centre to purchase a part for my vehicle. I spoke with one of your service counter staff members and advised her of the part I was looking for. Your counter staff member was have some difficulty locating the part I required. At that moment another counter person walked over to us and asked if we were having problems locating the part?
The counter person replied yes and the Lady counter person helped your staff member find the part I was looking for. She was very friendly and most helpful. She is a credit to your store in Red Deer.
I believe her name was Tara. Please Thank her again for me.
Regards, Jack Frost
Rose Smoke - Langford #45
Cashier greeted me at the door and offered to help direct me to what I needed. After we couldn't locate it, a nice young Lordco employee approached us on the floor and spent the time with me to locate what I needed in the back. Fantastic customer service! Needless to say, I'll be back.

Rose will save you time, money and headaches if you go here. Absolutely blown away at her attention to detail and willingness to help

Joey Carbrey - Calgary #112
I hope you're both doing well. My name is Dennis, and I’m a Corporate Trainer with Kal Tire. I wanted to take a moment to recognize the outstanding service I received from Joey at your Calgary location. This was a personal matter for me, as I was working on my own vehicle, and even our own vendors were unable to assist me in the way that Joey did.
I found myself in a tough situation—my vehicle was already disassembled, and I urgently needed an oxygen sensor. However, every supplier’s system, including Lordco’s, only listed the California emission standard sensor, which wasn’t the correct fit. Rather than stopping at what the system showed, Joey took the initiative to dig deeper. With his extensive parts knowledge and quick thinking, he discovered that the exact sensor I needed was listed under a different model and trim. Not only did he find the correct part, but he also had it in stock—saving me from a major delay.
Beyond his technical expertise, Joey also demonstrated incredible generosity. When I offered to buy him lunch as a small token of appreciation, he politely declined and instead asked if I could get something for his coworker instead. That level of selflessness speaks volumes about his character and his dedication to his team.
Joey is a true asset to your team, and I wanted to ensure his efforts don’t go unnoticed. His problem-solving skills, professionalism, and willingness to go above and beyond reflect incredibly well on Lordco. This type of service builds trust and keeps customers coming back.
Thank you for fostering a workplace where employees like Joey can thrive and provide such outstanding support. I truly appreciate the help I received, and I’ll gladly continue to recommend your store based on experiences like this.
Best regards,

When an injury happens in the workplace, it is not just about addressing the immediate problem; it is also a crucial opportunity to learn, improve and enhance safety practices going forward.
The key to an effective investigation is timing. The sooner the team investigates the injury, the clearer the details and circumstances will be. Prompt and thorough investigations of incidents are important to understand the root causes and prevent similar situations from happening again.
Following a recent incident, OHS would like to recognize the prompt and effective actions taken by our manager, safety representative, and the team at L68 – Duncan. After ensuring the injured received immediate first aid, they quickly engaged with the team to discuss the incident while details were still fresh. The manager and safety rep spoke directly with the workers and shippers to understand what contributed to the injury and how it could have been prevented. Their proactive approach in identifying areas for improvement and discussing preventive measures highlights a strong commitment to safety and the well-being of our team. This timely and thorough response reflects the standard of care and attention we strive for in all our safety practices.
A prompt and thorough investigation into workplace injuries is key to maintaining a safe work environment. By involving the team, identifying the root cause, and taking proactive steps to address hazards, we not only protect our team members but also prevent future incidents.
Safety is a continuous effort, and learning from every incident ensures that we grow stronger and safer with each step. Safety always!
