unifies campus Christmas

by Mike Tamburro This year Christmas at Cabrini is going to be different. The 'celebration of the light' it is called. Though it centers around the activities of the first four days of December , Colleen DiRaddo, director of student activities, would like the idea of celebration to "include the other Christmas events also." These include the St. Mary's Christmas Party, the Yule Log Ceremony, and the Christmas Dance. If these are included, the celebration on campus will be twelve days long compared to the four days spent last year. This is important DiRaddo says, because as Christians this is an important celebration for us . Also, it is important for those of us who practice the Jewish faith. It is the point of the first day of celebration to include and combine the Jewish and Christian students in this whole affair. This is important because, according to Tanya Bolcar, "to understand our faith we need a knowledge of how Christ lived as a Jew." DiRaddo adds that, "many of our traditions and symbolisms stem from and are similar to Jewish practices." The Dec. 2 events are aimed at unifying the campus in this celebration. According to Gene Boyle, "last year Christmas occurred more individually within each dorm." It is in the hopes that students will remain on campus the first weekend of December (having just gone home for Thanksgiving), that the next two days occur on Saturday and Sunday. December 3 includes a trip to downtown Philadelphia to see the many beautiful decorations of this city during the holiday season . It also carries the theme of 'Christmas around the world'. The theme will hopefully help us to realize that we share this celebration with an even larger family (as Christians and Jews) across the entire earth. Sunday involves the Tree Lighting Ceremony. According to DiRaddo, "this is a religious affair of significant symbolism." What is significant about the day is that the surrounding community of y.rayne ~as been included , to show us our belongmg to still another family during this Christmas season. All in all these festivities should provide an excellent kickoff to the part of the season which we wi_ll spend here at Cabrini. Perhaps we can all brmg a part of this spirit back home to our own families. SGA exec board plans next semester

by Ann Belsky The events scheduled for each semester are not haphazardly placed on the calendar and the sponsors are not chosen by process of elimination. The planning for each semester's calendar is the result of a process involving all clubs and organizations on campus.

On Saturday , Nov. 19, a workshop directed by Colleen DiRaddo was held in the Widener Center Lecture Hall between noon and 1:30 p.m. Its purpose was to plan for the spring 1984 calendar of events . DiRaddo went through the spring calendar day by day and the representative from each club and organization was free to suggest their event or sponsorship of a predesigned event, such as the Valentine's Dance . Besides the planning of an accurate calendar for next semester, the workshop also guarantees the clubs that their event is definitely on the schedule . Now they have a specific goal to work for. If there was any overlappmg of events or more than one organization wanted to sponsor a single event , a compromise was made according to priorities of the individual club and the purpose of the event . Sometimes events were co-sponsored, for example, the Valentine's Dance by the Sophomore Class and the Commuter Club .

"I feel that the workshop was an excellent forum in which to call everyone together to effectively plan an accurate calendar

for next semester ," Robin Larkins, SGA president , said. ''This will aid SGA clubs and class officers to plan ahead for each event next semester so there is no confusion at the last minute," she added . "It will also aid in holding sponsoring organizations accountable to holding an activity which they have scheduled." One of the most important effects of the workshop was that many new and innovative ideas were discussed and group feedback was provided to help club representatives who were confused about how to effectively execute and activity , according to Larkins . Jeanne Boyle, CEC representative at the workshop felt it was "effective and gave a quick glance at what is going to happen next semester ."

Be on the look out for audio and video presentations of exactly what is in store for us come December 9th from "Silver Sound ". (The DJs that worked for Parents Weekend in Octob_er.) The atmosphere of the Christmas season will be captured in every aspect of the course of the evening's events - with a few added extras to really bring that Christmas spirit home . Among these, the photography club will be on hand to capture the moments on film of the evening. For a small fee they will capture a typical winter scene with you and/or your group of friends as the subject material. Gifts and doorprizes will also hallmark the evening when an early visit is made to Cabrini by the master of gift giving himself, Santa Claus. (For a limited time Santa will be available for pictures and autographs.)

SGA Commentary

As our extension of Christmas cheer and giving to the entire campus community, the SGA Executive Board invites all faculty and administration to attend the dance free of charge. Ticket prices for students have also been kept to the lowest dollar amounts possible to encourage maximum participation in this once a year celebration of Christmas at Cabrini. The cost of the dinner /dance is only $5.00. The cost of the dance alone is $3.00. We, The SGA Executive Board, hope to provide an atmosphere conducive to campus - wide support and unity under the true spirit of family, coming together and goodwill which always encompasses the best of everyone during the Christmas season . The First Annual Christmas Snow Ball has further implications to Cabrini College than just the joining together of the entire campus community. For it is through this event that SGA is initiating control guidelines for the consumption of alcohol at any college sponsored event. We hope to establish firm guidelines and a successful control so that at future college events we can provide those upperclassman who can drink, the right to do so, with their friends of age and not of age present . We petition all members of the Cabrini College community to respect the actions of the Executive Board and support us in our attempt to set a precedent for the college in the allowing of alcoholic beverages to be served once again at campus-wide activities. The following is a set of guidelines drawn up by the SGA Executive Board for the sole purpose of providing a controlled drinking atmosphere to be allowed at college sponsored events . These guidelines have been submitted to and have been approved by the proper administrative authorities.
