Slow Living!
THE BENEFITS OF LIVING LIFE IN THE SLOW LANE
Sadie Dixon , 32, from Colne, is a devoted advocate of slow living, having embraced this lifestyle during the COVID-19 lockdowns. She found joy in the slower pace, and upon returning to the post-pandemic hustle, decided to maintain this more intentional way of life. Here’s how she integrates slow living into her daily routine, ensuring a happier, more meaningful existence for herself and her daughter.
BY LAURA STOREY
Slow living is exactly what it sounds like - embracing life at a more relaxed pace. Proponents of this lifestyle argue that by slowing down, we can lead more meaningful lives, live more intentionally, and free up time to focus on what truly matters, whether that be activities or people.
The movement traces its roots back to Rome in 1986, where a protest against the opening of a McDonald’s at the bottom of the Spanish Steps sparked the birth of the slow food movement. The golden arches symbolised a threat to a culture that revered the slow, communal enjoyment of lovingly prepared meals. One protestor, Carlo Petrini, went on to found the slow food movement dedicated to promoting home cooking and the use of traditional, local ingredients.
In 1999, Geir Berthelson, a Norwegian physicist and business consultant, expanded the concept to all facets of life by founding The World Institute of Slowness. According to Berthelson, the secret to a better life was simply to live it more slowly.
Since then, the slow living movement has gradually gained traction in the UK, bolstered by similar philosophies like the Danish concept of Hygge, which became popular in 2017. Hygge emphasises creating a cosy atmosphere to enjoy time with loved ones.
The COVID-19 pandemic offered many of us a taste of slow living, whether we wanted it or not. With shops closed and social activities
"Sadie believes in the importance of carving out personal time, even if just for ten minutes a day."
restricted, people turned to nature walks, passion projects, and long-forgotten hobbies. Evenings that might have been spent working overtime were instead filled with cooking meals at home and catching up with friends over video calls.
For some, the post-pandemic return to the fastpaced “rat race” was unappealing. Sadie is one such person who embraced slow living after experiencing it during the lockdowns. “During COVID, everyone slowed down, and I enjoyed that,” she says. “When things started speeding up again, it felt like the world became more chaotic and impolite. I decided to change the way I was living to make life happier for me and my daughter.”
Sadie’s journey into slow living was influenced by personal experiences and inspirations she found on Instagram. “I would see posts that inspired me and incorporated those ideas into my lifestyle,” she explains. A search for “slow living” on Instagram reveals a variety of interpretations—from cooking delicious meals to gardening, cosying up with a book, embarking on adventures, or engaging in simple activities with children.
Sadie and her daughter enjoy local walks and visits to places like Gawthorpe Hall and East Riddlesden Hall, as well as the seaside, taking a calm approach and not stressing when things go awry.
"Don't force it upon yourself, and don't expect perfection. Life is not perfect."
might get to enjoy books or toys my daughter no longer needs,” she says.
In the evenings, Sadie prioritises self-care. “I light my candles or use pillow mist spray,” she says. “That’s my time for me because realistically, seven days a week, I don’t get any time to myself.” Whether reading, painting her nails, or simply relaxing, Sadie believes in the importance of carving out personal time, even if just for ten minutes a day.
“We visit the local library at least twice a week, too,” Sadie explains. “We take part in story time and other activities they host, and my daughter enjoys choosing which books to take home.”
Sadie also advocates for sustainable practices, such as buying secondhand and donating things to charity shops. “I love knowing that another child
While some who practice slow living shun technology, Sadie believes it can have its place. “I’m 32 and grew up in the 90s when we didn’t have the means to record everything we did. It’s bittersweet—I don’t always feel the need to share everything online.
“However, I do have a very positive experience with Instagram. I’ve met many people through it, including a woman from Somerset with whom I exchange postcards and little notes. It’s wonderful to make connections with different people, even if you never meet them in person. Social media can be a positive force, and that’s why I continue to use itbecause it brings me joy.”
Her advice to those interested in slow living? “Don’t force it upon yourself, and don’t expect perfection. Life is not perfect. I still have moments where my daughter has tantrums, and I have meltdowns.” Embracing imperfections and taking things one day at a time is key.
Ultimately, slow living is about finding what works for you and integrating those practices into your daily life. It’s a personal journey that allows you to reconnect with what truly matters and find peace amidst the chaos of the modern world.
Summer Berry Chocolate Traybake
INGREDIENTS
175g self-raising flour
150g light brown sugar
50g cocoa powder
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 eggs
150ml milk
150ml oil (vegetable or sunflower)
450ml double cream
Berries – we recommend strawberries, blueberries, raspberries & cherries
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 160°C (fan) and line the traybake tin with baking parchment. In the mixing bowl, fully combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder and bicarbonate with the whisk before adding the milk, eggs and oil.
Mix everything together to form a smooth batter, then pour into the lined traybake tin. Place in the oven on the middle shelf and bake for 25-30 minutes until springy in the centre. Allow the sponge to cool before removing from the tin. Whip the cream to soft peaks, swirl on top of the cooled sponge and top with your preferred berries just before serving.
Frying Pan Pizza
Makes 1 pizza
INGREDIENTS
110ml warm water
½ packet (3-4g) dried yeast
200g strong bread flour
½ tbsp sugar
¼ tsp salt
50g passata
½ tsp dried mixed herbs
1 ball fresh mozzarella (drained and torn into pieces)
Fresh basil leaves (optional)
METHOD
Place the frying pan, skillet or roasting tin in the oven and preheat to 200°C.
In the measuring jug, combine the warm water and yeast. Weigh the flour, sugar and salt into the mixing bowl and thoroughly mix before pouring in the yeast and water.
Bring the dough together with your hands and then, on a floured surface, knead for a few minutes before returning to the mixing bowl. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes to prove.
Lightly flour your surface. Once the dough has

proved, turn it out onto the floured surface and roll into a circle the size of your frying pan or skillet, or shape into a circle that will sit nicely in your roasting tin. Use oven gloves to remove the pan, skillet or tin from the oven and transfer the dough into it. Being careful of the hot pan, skillet or tin, spoon the passata on the dough, sprinkle on the dried herbs and torn mozzarella. Use oven gloves to return the pan or tin to the oven. Bake for 10-15 minutes and top with fresh basil leaves before serving.
Makes 6 flatbreads
INGREDIENTS
Dip: (optional)
100g natural yoghurt
50g cucumber (grated)
1 tsp mint sauce
Flatbreads:
200g self-raising flour
½ tsp baking powder
200g natural yoghurt
100g melted butter
1 tsp cumin seeds
METHOD
To make the dip, grate the cucumber and squeeze out the excess liquid into the sink with your hands. Then place the grated cucumber into the serving bowl, add the yoghurt and mint sauce and mix.
For the flatbreads, combine the flour, baking powder and cumin seeds in the mixing bowl, then add the yoghurt and 30g of the melted butter to form a dough. Lightly flour your work surface. Turn out the dough onto the floured surface and knead for a few minutes.
fabflour.co.uk/easy-peasy-baking
Heat up your frying pan to a medium-high heat. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll out into 15-20cm circles. Place each one into the hot pan one at a time and cook for 2 minutes on each side until slightly puffed and toasted. Once cooked, rub them with the remaining melted butter and serve whole or sliced into strips for dipping. F
Love Your YARDEN
Is your backyard nothing more than a home for your bins?
Transform your yard into a garden. Here are our top tips for transforming your little patch of paradise.
Set Your Goals
There’s no point setting up a table and chairs if you hate eating al fresco or buying an extravagant outdoor lounge set for a yard that would just about manage a hammock. Think about how you would like to utilise your space, whether that’s a home bar, a cosy reading nook, or a patch for kids to play on.
Plant Native Species
Choose plants that thrive in the UK climate. Consider lavender for its fragrance and hardiness, foxgloves for their striking height, and bluebells for a burst of colour in spring. Native plants will be easier to maintain and beneficial for local wildlife.
Go Wild with Greenery
Yards often look bereft of the colour gardens have, so inject some greenery. You don’t need vast flower beds. A few pots will do the trick. If your space is small, embrace vertical gardening with trellises and climbing flowering plants like clematis or honeysuckle. Hang pots from fences and walls.
Outdoor lighting can transform your yard into a magical retreat.
Grow Your Own
Even in small spaces, you can grow your own vegetables or herbs. Use containers to plant tomatoes, strawberries, or basil. Raised beds can also be a great option if you have a bit more space.
E ncourage Wildlife
Attract birds, bees, and butterflies to your yard by planting wildflowers and installing bird feeders or insect hotels. Buddleia is great for butterflies, while thyme and rosemary attract bees.
Add Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting can transform your yard into a magical retreat. String fairy lights in trees or along fences, use solar-powered stake lights to line pathways, or place lanterns on tables to create a cosy atmosphere.
Use Artificial Grass for Low Maintenance
If lawn maintenance feels like too much work, consider installing artificial grass. Modern artificial grass looks realistic, requires minimal upkeep, and provides a lush, green area for relaxing or playing.
By following these tips and incorporating specific UK plants, you can turn your backyard into a beautiful and functional yarden to enjoy all summer long.
How to survive FAMILY HOLIDAY DISASTERS
TOP 5TIPS
BY CATHERINE BANES
Planning family holidays can be one big headache especially with large families. Finding the perfect holiday spot that is great for not just your yourself as a parent but for the littlest child in your home can be a chore. In general, the first headache is getting a great place, however, apart from the financial strain taking a family on a holiday brings, the ultimate hope that the holiday goes according to plan is the biggest stress of the experience. Many families avoid taking holidays mainly to avoid the problems that could possibly arise from traveling with a large group of kids.
However, with enough practice and creativity, any parent can turn a holiday freak show into a pretty enjoyable holiday away from home.
The best thing to do is to put structures in place to make sure that nothing can possibly go

wrong. Prior planning is of the utmost importance, including checking and double checking all reservations and making sure they are child-friendly and fun. Checking for safety is also paramount when dealing with family holidays. The best family holiday is usually one that is uneventful and when things go according to plan. Here are some ideas you might want to make use of:
1.Always have backup
From back up hotels to back up food. Always carry an extra. Things could go horribly wrong and you do not want to be stranded with a large group of children during such a period. In case you get to the venue and the place does not look like it did online, your back up might work and the holiday will be saved. Some people have had issues with their reservations and so having a backup house can suffice so that no one gets tired on the first night of your arrival.
2.Get a doctor on call
The worst thing that could happen in a holiday is a sick child. As parents, getting the nearest hospital and a doctor or call can save you some of the worst experiences like walking around for hours with an ill child. Getting a doctor on call means you could easily have your children checked if anything does go wrong.
3.Get a first aid kit
First aid kits are very important because children get hurt all the time. Be sure to add a sweet or two to treat any hypoglycemic spells you might encounter.
4.Prepare for all kinds of weather
You might have planned an outdoor summer holiday, but the weather does not always listen to your plans. Pack up a good
“The weather does not always listen to your plans.”
stash of board games to prepare you for whatever bad weather that might come. This way, the family will get to spend time together indoors and still have a great time together even though the weather tries to ruin the holiday. Preparation goes with clothing as well. Apart from packing for the weather, it’s best to pack for the climate as well. Carry a jacket or two for those summer trips in places that are known for a good amount of rain.
5.Just wing it
There are many things you cannot see ahead of time, like a broken down vehicle. Try to be in the best of spirits if such things do happen. Get all the necessary information you can get beforehand, but if you do find yourself in a fix, just wing it. Most spontaneous decisions have indeed proved to be interesting holidays for both parents and children.
If you want to have a good holiday, you might want to try any of these tips to survive whatever could go wrong in a family holiday. The best family holidays are the ones where the family is together, regardless of the weather, and having a great time.

DIY Mini Scarecrows
Scarecrow-making gives you the opportunity to grab a pen and paper, write a long list and then feel the sense of accomplishment as you tick a lot of stuff off. They help scare away pests; you can recycle your old clothes and reduce waste; you can get your handiness on and prove to all that your soft, callous-free office hands are totally capable of real work.
While a scarecrow’s effectiveness in scaring away birds and larger pests is often questioned, its effectiveness in bringing together generations is not. This is an activity that transcends age, and scarecrowmaking will bring together the big and little kids alike.
Traditionally we have constructed larger, scarier, tall scaremonsters, but by scaling it down a little, kids can make this project truly their own. They become the fashionistas of the project - and by using their old
clothing, it helps strike an alliance between child and scarecrow that we, as adults, could never understand. So don’t see size as a limitation – see it as an opportunity to make truly freaky, truly scary, scaremonster creations.
Things you need…
• old kids’ clothing (shirt, pants, rain jacket, gloves, shoes)
• 2 small bamboo stakes
• 2 cable ties
• piece of hessian material
• straw
• soft twine
• a make-up kit, or a few fat marker pens
1.Go through your KIDS’ WARDROBE and isolate the clothes that are available for this activity.
2.Start by constructing a small cross with the two bamboo pieces, held together with two cable ties. Tie one cable tie in one direction, and the second in the other.
3.
Next it’s time to make the head, so grab your hessian and cut a piece approximately 500 mm by 500 mm (1 ft 7½ in by 1 ft 7½ in), which will sit underneath the top section of the cross.
4.NOW GET STUFFIN’! Place a small amount of straw in the centre, bottom section of the hessian and then pull it over to form a straw hessian balloon. Don’t over-inflate the scarecrow’s head. It just needs enough straw to form a ball that can be secured together.
5.
Grab a length of twine and tie the neck that will hold the head and its contents in place.
6.For the upper body, use a long-sleeved shirt, preferably a button-up. Slide it over the arm bones and begin stuffing life into the little monster.
7.
Now, attach the legs to the torso. This is where it gets slightly technical, because you’ll need to cut a couple of small holes in the bottom of the shirt, so you can thread together the shirt and the pants, using the belt holes. Soft twine is best.
8.Resume stuffin’! Fill up the pants and then finetune your work.
9.Now come the shoes. Make sure the pants are bulky enough to make the shoes a tight fit. That way they’ll stay on better.
10.
Time to raid the make-up kit and give this MONSTER some character. Eyeliner, lipstick... or alternatively use a few fat markers.
You now have yourself a FREAKY LITTLE THING wearing your kids’ old clothing. All child’s play really.

THE BEST BOOK IS THE ONE YOU WRITE YOURSELF
Introducing Journaling to Children
One of the challenges children face in the adult world is feeling misunderstood due to their limited vocabulary. They often struggle to express their emotions, leading younger children to have tantrums when they’re upset because they don’t know how else to express their feelings. For those who find verbal expression difficult, keeping a journal can be a valuable tool.
Giving children a space to gather their thoughts and reflect on their experiences helps them gain perspective on their day. It allows them to make connections between cause and effect and explore their feelings through writing and creativity.
Keeping a journal is a healthy way for children and young people to make sense of their surroundings. By recording their fears, memories, observations, and goals, they can cultivate a growth mindset and a habit of gratitude from an early age. Journaling also enhances their communication and creativity.
Journaling Over Diary WritingWhat’s the Difference?
While journaling and diary writing overlap, they serve different purposes. Diary keeping involves recording daily activities and events that happen over a day or a period of time. In contrast, journaling delves deeper into our thoughts and emotions.
“The key is to let them decide how they want to express themselves, driven by their interests and instincts.”
Fosters Creativity
Journaling can be an excellent creative outlet for children. The key is to let them decide how they want to express themselves, driven by their interests and instincts. They might choose to draw or doodle, and if they ask for specific pens, stickers, or pencils, try to oblige if possible. They might also want to include cut-out pictures from magazines, leaves or flowers they find, photos, or fabric scraps. Whatever they choose will be a unique form of their creative and emotional expression.
Enhances Communication Skills
Journaling gently encourages children to sit with their thoughts and express them clearly and healthy. This process involves deep self-reflection,
which nurtures self-awareness. Through this reflection, children gain the ability to understand different perspectives, fostering empathy.
Promotes Emotional Development
Journaling provides valuable mental health benefits, helping children understand their needs and the world around them. I introduce journaling early in my sessions with clients as a gentle therapeutic technique. It helps both adults and children manage stress and anxiety and recognise their triggers. Writing and creativity offer a way to gain perspective, allowing them to focus on important feelings and let go of others. Forming new habits takes time, usually between 21 days and three months. Be patient with your child and gently encourage consistent journaling. You might even start a journal yourself to create a shared routine. Watching you engage in the same practice can help them feel more connected to the activity. Choose a time of day that works best for them, such as after school or before bed.
Journal Prompting Tips
• What is your favourite memory and why?
• What are three things you are grateful for?
• What is one thing that helps you when you are worried?
• Think about your favourite hobby. What makes you love doing it?
• Close your eyes and listen to the world. What sounds do you hear?
• Would you rather it be Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring? Why?
• Think about one person that makes you feel loved. How do they show you that they love you?
“A journal is personal and needs to be kept private to serve its true promise.”
• When you get mad or grumpy, what is one thing you can do to calm down?
• What are you excited about?
Number One Rule for Parents
I understand it can be challenging and may go against your instincts. Many children will want to share what they’ve written in their journals; however, if your child prefers to keep it private, please respect their wishes.
Resist the urge to read or look at what they’ve written. A journal is personal and needs to be kept private to serve its true promise. It has to hold a certain level of independence.
However, if you feel that the journal’s contents are important for your child’s well-being, you could gently say, “I understand your journal is private, but is there a part you would feel comfortable sharing with me?”
If your child begins to enjoy journaling, they will have found an invaluable, healthy coping mechanism that can accompany them throughout their life. It could even play a role in shaping their future.
F
Sending you all love and light.
Go gently on yourselves.
