fter a dreadful weather forecast early in the week it was with great relief that Mrs. Eileen Paterson, Lady President of Holywood Golf Club greeted guests for her coffee morning in warm sunshine. The winner of the President’s Prize and President’s Cup was Helena Campbell (40pts), 2nd was Dorothy McKillen (39pts), 3rd Ruth Roberts (38pts) and 4th Karen Greene (36pts). Best Gross Julie Carr(27 gross points),Front Nine Pat Kelleher (20pts) Back Nine Tori Alexander (19pts).The nine-hole competition was won by Karen

VAN MORRISON SET TO LIGHT UP CULLODEN AS PART OF ASPECTS FESTIVAL VAN M ORRIS O N - A N EV EN IN G OF WOR DS A ND M U S I C CULLOD EN H OTEL • WED N ES DAY 2 1 S E PT E M B E R 8 PM

Van Morrison is a man whose legendary blend of mystic poetry and soulful music has inspired and uplifted audiences throughout an extraordinary career. This unique night will bring you not only the best of Van Morrison’s music, but also an insight into the craftsmanship of one of the world’s outstanding songwriters. From his earliest days, Van Morrison has channeled the influences of creative giants such as Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Muddy Waters, Mahalia Jackson, and Leadbelly. His music has defied boundaries, offering everything from the swinging souljazz of Moondance to the traditional styles of Irish Heartbeat. In the last few decades, he has collaborated with a range of artists including John Lee Hooker, Mose Allison, and Tom Jones, and dedicated projects to celebrating and re-exploring his blues, jazz, skiffle and country roots. In a career spanning thirty-five studio albums, he has been honoured with a Brit Award, a knighthood, an

Ivor Novello, six Grammys, honorary doctorates from Queen’s University Belfast and University of Ulster, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the French Ordres des Artes et des Lettres. Van Morrison has done nothing less than re-define the possibilities of popular music. The range of his work is clear from the first volume of his lyrics, Lit Up Inside. Selected Lyrics (Faber and Faber, 2014). This publication was the catalyst for a series of sell-out, introspective performances which explored the roots of his art in the company of some special guest contributors. For this year’s Aspects Van Morrison will also be joined in conversation by some invited friends. Aspects has a long tradition of embracing writing in all its forms. Now in its 25th year, Ards and North Down Borough Council is delighted to announce their extra special anniversary programme that celebrates the best of Irish writing – a hallmark of the festival since it began www.aspectsfestival.com

CAPTURE THE MEMORIES

HOLYWOOD DISTRICT U3A LO CAL H I STO RY GRO U P N EED YO U TO T RAW L T H E ME M O RY B A N KS How often have we wished we had asked grandparents or parents about family history? This year in particular, our minds have been stretched to remember, for example, what that uncle was called who fought in World War One? It is so important to record information before it is lost. NOW WE CAN! The Holywood U3A Local History Group would like to find people who remember relatives or friends telling stories of Holywood people during World War One. Our aim is to record memories of that time and to build up the archives in our

library as a valuable resource for understanding how people lived through that difficult period in our past. During our exhibition entitled "Holywood at War 1914-1918" local people will have an opportunity to tell their stories and have their World War One photographs and memorabilia recorded on THURSDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of the Queen's University "Living Legacies 1914-1918" programme. If you are interested, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible to arrange a time. Please contact:

Norma Cooper on 028 90424545 or at coopers2.ni@gmail.com Betty McLaughlin on 028 90422840 or betty.mclaughlin@ btinternet.com North Down & Ards Family History Society will also be on hand to help members of the public try and trace their ancestors. The exhibition will be from FRIDAY 16-30 SEPTEMBER in Holywood Library during opening hours. PLEASE HELP CAPTURE THESE MEMORIES FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

LIVING ROOM

A new business has opened its doors in Holywood which brings the Living Room feeling to the High Street. Eight months in the making, it’s the perfect place to sit back and enjoy the coffee, patisserie and surroundings. We spoke to owner Gary Pullen about how the project came together.

WERE YOU ALWAYS ON THE LOOK OUT FOR A PLACE IN HOLYWOOD?

I have lived in Holywood for the last four years and love the sense of community here. This unit then appeared just after the New Year and I just knew it was the perfect place and perfect for the Holywood residents.

WHAT IS THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE LIVING ROOM AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON IT?

My fiancée and I like nothing better than sitting on the sofa with a bottle of wine and some cheese or olives. The dream has always been to have a restaurant in this style but I did not want to compete with other venues in Holywood and decided to bring something different. I contacted Whitespace Design Consultancy Ltd and over the last 8 months, have worked together to transform an ordinary store into something very unique on the high street.

WHATS CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO EXPERIENCE WHEN THEY COME THROUGH THE DOOR?

I want people to experience the relaxed, chilled feeling of being in a living room where they can sit back enjoy the coffee, patisserie and the surroundings, carefully arranged and selected by my fiancée Angela McCoy for the effect. We are also choosing our food carefully due to the low tables as we are not a restaurant and understand that these may be hard to eat from. We are choosing delicious simple food like salads and French patisserie.

EXPLAIN A BIT ABOUT YOUR COFFEE AND FOOD:

We have wonderful Italian coffee from Trieste, roasted over beech wood! The coffee has been created from the perfect combination of eight of the most prized coffees, with aromas including fresh citrus, jasmine blossom, fine vanilla and melted chocolate with a touch of sugar sweetness. When a customer sits in with a coffee, we will also serve a small piece of dark chocolate which has been selected to complement and enhance the taste of the coffee, by La Coquine Handmade in Holywood. With this, we have selected a very special patisserie, you can only buy them in The Living Room. People can take away, order for parties and have birthday cakes made on request to the same high standard.

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR EVENINGS?

We are offering bring your own bottle (wine or sparkling wines)on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Customers must dine off our evening menu which includes cheese boards, Charcutrie boards, bread boards and pastas etc. We charge corkage. We will open until 8pm but if popular we will extend the opening times and even increase the evenings if demand is there and we will be flexible for our clientele where possible. We will also be encouraging private functions up to 30 persons and can offer a range menus to cater for any budget.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE LINED UP FOR XMAS?

We can offer function space and will have a twist on some Christmas classics. Our chef has put together some festive delights which will be available during December.

RE M ARKAB LE L AN D M AR KS

You may have been in The Bay Tree recently and seen their new unique counter or indeed spotted their ad in the recent copies of Loop Mag Holywood. You will have been as taken aback by the beautiful artwork as we were, so we had to investigate the artist. Meet Danielle Morgan of Flax Fox Designs whose love of architecture and art have combined to give us the joy of this wonderful talent.

“I have vivid memories as a teenager really struggling to know what I wanted to do,” says Danielle. “I knew I loved art. This was a subject I excelled in. But unfortunately careers advice in the 90’s wasn’t very adventurous.” Later studying Media/History at Coleraine, Danielle felt she missed her opportunity of becoming an artist. But a trip to Australia in 2009 where she saw her established artist cousin Bridget Farmer working, changed her life. “Bridget returned to Belfast for a brief period, and in that time we gained a market stall at St George’s, I joined the Belfast Print Workshop, learned how to screen print and we both started Flax Fox. It was our alternative to leprechaun souvenirs!” Danielle loves the memories attached to buildings. She went on a geography school trip once; “I was mesmerised by the window details, the ornate decorations around the windows and fascinated by all the back stories around ownership and imagining the people who designed our buildings.”

So how did The Bay Tree commission come about? “William (Bay Tree Owner) saw my Belfast Skyline Commission for Cast & Crew restaurant and thought he’d like similar for The Bay Tree in Holywood. Only instead of putting it on the wall, he thought he’d wrap it around the counter. Which is in full view when you’re at table height sipping coffee and munching one of their delicious cinnamon scones. The Bay Tree have a lot of regular customers who’ve grown up in the area. He wanted less obvious places only they would recognise like Twisel Bridge, Johnny The Jig and The Priory. It was a challenge sketching the skyline and adding colour to a such a varied bunch of buildings and landmarks, but we got there. William’s really happy with it which means I’m happy. I’ll always remember this project vividly as I managed to complete it whilst nursing my newborn baby. I’m a big advocate for working mums! I think we’re amazing!”

IT ’S A B O UT

TIME BY OSCAR & JOY • HOLYWOOD

WHEN PEOPLE THINK ABOUT WATCHES, THE MOST COMMON WORD ASSOCIATION IS LIKELY TO BE “SWISS”, AS THAT IS WHERE MOST QUALITY TIME PIECES AND MOVEMENTS ARE MADE.

2

Cyclops

00 years ago the story was very different: over half of all watches were made in Great Britain, whose quality and precision led the world. Fast forward to 2016 and the British industry is virtually extinct. There is but a single company, Thomas Mercer & Co, with a direct link to the past, and unfortunately their timepieces cost £100,000 each. However, since the turn of the century there has been a small but noticeable revival in British horology. Although most movements are still imported from Switzerland or Japan, the design and construction is 100% British. And some companies, such as Bremont, are installing their own precision machines to make more of the working parts themselves. Other emerging companies have been seeking to change the business model. For example Christopher Ward sells exclusively on-line. The quality of his watches are every bit as good as his Swiss counterparts, but are available at a fraction of the price.

Sun & Moon

One new British company, London based MJW, has even gone so far as to question the whole nature of time, and the very purpose of having a watch (as their founder, Crispin Jones has remarked, “if you want accurate time, use an internet linked smart phone”). Just as Swiss companies define their watches as jewellery rather than timepieces, MJW has focused on creativity and design. Every watch is like a piece of art on your wrist, and just like the best art every watch tells a story. Take for example the sun and moon watch, a revival of a 17th century watch design, that gives a pictorial representation of both the heavens and earth - which move as the day progresses. Or “Cyclops” which replaces conventional hands with the movement of a single circle over coloured spheres representing the hours. These are watches that make you think, start a conversation, or simply smile; and represent the very best tradition of British creativity and design.

MJW British designed watches are available at Oscar & Joy Holywood, from £120. Oscar & Joy | 94 High Street | Holywood | BT18 9HP | 028 9042 5483 www.oscarandjoy.com • www.facebook.com/oscarandjoy

A HEAD’S UP

WE ARE NOW IN SEPTEMBER WHICH MEANS THE KIDS ARE BACK TO SCHOOL. UNFORTUNATELY THIS ALSO MEANS AN INCREASE IN THE PREVALENCE OF HEAD LICE. AT BURNS PHARMACY IN HOLYWOOD WE ARE HAPPY TO PROVIDE ADVICE AND TREATMENT TO RESOLVE INFESTATIONS AND PREVENT RE-INFESTATIONS.

ON HEAD LICE LIAM BURNS | MPS | BURNS PHARMACY

Head lice is most commonly found in schoolchildren aged between 4-11 years but anyone can catch them. Lice are highly contagious and can spread quickly from person to person. They can’t fly, jump or swim and they mainly spread by climbing from the hair of an infested person to the hair of someone else during head to head contact. They can also, however, spread as a result of sharing items such as combs, brushes and hats. A head lice infestation is not the result of dirty hair or poor hygiene. All types of hair can be affected, regardless of length or condition. Head lice are tiny grey-brown

wingless insects which live by sucking blood from the scalp. Their eggs are known as ‘nits’ and these are laid and glued to the base of hair. Head Lice are frequently associated with an itchy scalp. Itching is not caused by the lice biting the scalp but by an allergic reaction to the lice. Not everyone with a head lice infestation will experience an itchy scalp, however, as not everyone is allergic to head lice. In some instances, therefore, it can take some time to notice a head lice infestation. The best method for detecting an infestation is wet combing using a fine toothed comb available from

your local pharmacy. There are three main ways of treating head lice: insecticides, Dimethicone (a siliconebased lotion) or wet combing (a nonchemical treatment). In Burns Pharmacy we will be happy to provide advice and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Plus we can also provide treatment and detection combs for patients under the Minor Ailments Scheme (i.e. we can provide these on prescription and free of charge, without the need to visit your doctor). Please call in and see us at Burns Pharmacy for a professional, personal and friendly service.

C H O C O L AT E & FINE FOOD F E ST A H OY

Thousands of chocoholics and enthusiastic foodies from Northern Ireland and beyond are set to descend again this year on Killyleagh town centre to celebrate the 2016 Finnebrogue Artisan Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival, 23rd – 25th September. #20 SEPTEM B ER 2016 / On The Deck

Chef Paul Rankin (L) and Finnebrogue Artisan Chairman Denis Lynn (R) join Hans Sloane, the 17th Century County Down-born inventor of milk chocolate

Sponsored by artisan producer Finnebrogue, based in nearby Downpatrick and famous for their outstanding quality venison and sausages, among other favourites, this year’s festival will be the largest one yet, with over 15 chocolatiers and nearly 40 local artisan food producers scheduled to set up camp at the historic Killyleagh Castle for the weekend-long festival. Founded in 2010 to celebrate Killyleagh’s most famous son, Hans Sloane, who was born in the village in 1660 and later became one of the most famous men of his time partially because of his development of milk chocolate, the biennial festival has grown from strength to strength and is now regarded as one of the leading events of its type in the UK and Ireland and a highlight of the summer calendar for locals in Killyleagh. Joining the line-up of this year’s festival is Cancer Fund for Children, who have been confirmed as the beneficiary of this year’s fundraising activities. The leading local charity provides practical, emotional and financial support to children and young people affected by cancer and their families, and also offers therapeutic short breaks at Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, just a short drive from Killyleagh.

Paul Rankin and Finnebrogue Artisan consultant development chef Chris Burt

The festival will kick off on Friday 23rd September with the Chocolate Ball which will take place on the grounds of the stunning Killyleagh Castle, one of Ireland’s longest-inhabited castles. Guests will be treated to a chocolate-rich menu prepared and curated by the Chef Simon Dougan of Yellow Door and Finnebrogue consultant development chef Chris Burt, followed by world class entertainment set in a stunning marquee against the backdrop of Killyleagh Castle. The three-day celebration will continue on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th September with the Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival, where guests can enjoy the range of chocolatiers’ displays and market stalls, taste and purchase local artisan produce, and be entertained by the activities for the whole family, offering serious fun for all in 2016! The Finnebrogue Artisan Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival kindly acknowledges the support of Tourism Northern Ireland, Newry Mourne & Down District Council, and Food NI in the staging of this year’s event as well as the support of sponsors Bryan Somers Travel, Finlay Wealth Management, Jeep, Killyleagh Development Association, Mash Direct, Roskyle, and S.D. Bell’s.

CHANGING SEASONS

“September is my favourite of all the months. As the leaves fall and the season changes my love for all things autumnal gathers momentum. Not all embrace the darker nights and colder temperatures, so love it or hate it, here is my change of season survival kit.”

Debs

HAVE A FACIAL

As we move from one season to another, this is my non negotiable time to book a facial. I may have intended to have one a month and failed but I most definitely will have one now. How has my skin changed since the summer? Is it very dehydrated? Have I done a good job to protect it with SPF? A skincare expert will be able to assess all of this. At DHMB the Yon-Ka Le Grande Classique facial is a favourite, everything we do is tailored to what your skin needs and it is 1 hr 15 of total relaxation.

TAKE THE POLISH OFF

Let your nails breathe. After a summer of having the toes polished I always recommend a polish break. Give yourself a mini pedi at home, use a scrub, gently foot file (a summer of flip flops = hard skin) and most importantly apply a nourishing cream all over the feet, concentrating on the heals. If you have had gels on, apply a cuticle oil all over the nail too for extra nourishment.

UP DATE

I have makeup lurking around in my kit that has never been used - neon yellow eyeshadow seemed like a good idea at the time. It’s also good to clear out passed their best items such as lipsticks that smell like crayons (that’s how I know they’re ‘off’), mascaras that are dry, the broken up bronzer that coats everything in a shimmery dust. And once you do that, come see us! We have just launched Delilah makeup and it is seriously stunning! Pick a perfect new lipstick, rethink your eye makeup. We’ll guide you to a new season of looking good and feeling fab!

START SOMETHING NEW

Kids go back to school, clubs start up, courses begin. What a perfect time to turn the hypothetical page on the past. What have you always wanted to do? What did you used to do that you wouId like to try again? I have always said I wanted to learn to run and this Autumn I have signed up to do a half marathon. Set a new goal, believe that you can do it and get started. Seize the day and all that!

OCTOBER IS WILLS

MONTH Ashling Gray Solicitor @ Hunt Solicitors

Following our successful Wills campaign in October 2015 Hunt Solicitors are again offering Half Price Wills to everyone who makes their Will throughout October. To get all readers thinking about their own Wills we have answered some of the questions we would get asked on a regular basis.

Q. DO YOU NEED TO KNOW ALL OF MY FINANCIAL INFORMATION LIKE BANK ACCOUNT NUMBERS AND PENSION POLICY NUMBERS TO MAKE MY WILL? A. It is not essential to bring with you detailed lists of everything you own in order to make your Will. Your Will can be as specific as you want to make it or we can leave all of your assets in one ‘pot’ known as the residue which will cover all of the assets you may own at the date of your death. Your finances will be discussed throughout your consultation however indepth knowledge of each and every account and policy number is not necessary and will not bar you from making your Will.

Q. WHAT DO I NEED TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE I DISCUSS MY WILL? A. We will talk you through all of the information that we need from you to prepare a Will for you in draft form so pre preparing information is not necessary. Once you have received your draft you can make any additions or amendments that

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITOR IN HOLYWOOD

you may wish. Then you will receive a final draft and arrange to come back in to us and sign. We have made Wills for people who know absolutely every detail they wish to include in their Will right through to people who don’t know where to start so we are experienced in how to draft a Will that works for you. Q. CAN MY EXECUTOR BE A BENEFICIARY OF MY WILL? A. Your Executor, the person(s) who manages your affairs after your death, can most certainly be a beneficiary of your Will. Your beneficiary cannot be a witness to your Will however our staff will act as the witnesses so you will not need to worry about arranging your own witnesses.

These are just a small number of queries we are asked on a regular basis and we will discuss any specific queries that you may have during our consultations. All initial consultations are free and we can arrange to visit you at your home if you are unable to travel to our office.

HEAD BOY DELIVERS A* PERFORMANCE #20 S EPT EMBER 2016 / A Class Act

BEN TAYLOR, HEAD BOY FOR CAMPBELL COLLEGE WAS ONE OF 123 PUPILS AT CAMPBELL COLLEGE WHO OPENED THEIR A LEVEL RESULTS LAST MONTH AND HE FINISHED HIS YEAR IN STYLE WITH 4A*’S. BEN WAS JOINED BY ALEX NAGAR WITH BOTH PUPILS ACHIEVING THEIR 4 A* GRADES IN MATHEMATICS, FURTHER MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY.

B

en and Alex were closely followed by 1st XV team mates Justin Savage and Malcolm Corry whose different journeys through Campbell tell an interesting story. Seven years ago Justin received a D in his 11+ and Malcolm an A. Justin started Year 8 in the bottom stream and Malcolm in the top. At the end of their School years they opened their results together to reveal 8A*/A’s between them in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. From different beginnings they will both now look toward the same future as they head off to University to study Engineering. Demonstrating an all-round education the success of the College’s 1st XV Rugby Team was not limited to the pitch this year with 7 of the team who played in the Ulster Schools’ Cup Final boasting a total of

22 A*/A’s between them - across both A Level and AS Level. Congratulations to Justin Savage, Malcolm Corry, James Boyle, Nikolai Koplewski, John Crowther , Matthew Crowther and James Nelson. A successful year for the rugby squad both on and off the pitch. 8 pupils at A Level celebrated 3 A*/A’s including; Nicholas McMinn, Harry Kyle, David Isaac, Richard Spence, Charles Ewing, Charlie Edgar, John Crowther and Conor Boardman with STEM subjects featuring highly for these top performers. Individual success was also witnessed at AS Level with 5 pupils achieving 4 As; Jake Bodels, Matthew Crowther, Thomas Gillan, James Nelson and Mohammad Rashid. Closely followed by Christopher Ashe, Jamie Brown, James Ellis and Adam Matthews who celebrated 3 A’s. Headmaster, Mr Robert Robinson WWW.CAMPBELLCOLLEGE.CO.UK

MBE stated, “We were delighted with the many individual success stories this year. Ben has been an outstanding role model as Head Boy and with this performance he finishes his time at the College with a flourish. Justin and Malcolm are a superb example of how boys develop and mature at different rates; their results demonstrate that where boys are placed academically at age 11 does not reflect where they will be when they are 18. Members of our rugby team have been outstanding examples for our whole College community. They are a testament to our belief that and allround education is about achieving success both inside and outside the classroom. My congratulations go to all our boys, their parents and our staff on the hard work and the achievements of the year. “
